DEGREES: The defense the Ph.-D. thesis, Title: 'Potential energy surfaces of nuclei in multidimentional space of deformation parameters' The Doctoral School at the Department of Physics UMCS Speciality: Theoretical Nuclear Physics Department of Physics UMCS, Speciality: Theoretical Physics Master Diploma: 'Isospin dependence of oscillator frequency of Nilsson single-partical potential ' Other courses: Course of French in The Alliance Francaise (DELF I, A1-5,B2) Course of English in The British and American English School EMPLOYMENT: Postdoc position in Niewodnicza«ski Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN, Krakow,Poland Postdoc position in GANIL, Caen, France Postdoc position in Niewodnicza«ski Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN, Krakow,Poland Profesional carrier: In 2000 I started the Ph. D. Studies in the Institute of Physics in the University of Maria Curie - Skªodowska (UMCS) in Lublin, where during four years I have continued the research on the potential energy calculations in the multidimensional deformation space for heavy nuclei in group of prof. B. Nerlo-Pomorska. This work has been done in collaboration with prof. J. Dudek from Institute Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) in Strasbourg, thus it was necessary to visit this laboratory many times and resulted in several conference talks and articles. After the Ph.D. defense, in October 2004, I have been employed in Division of Nuclear Physics and Strong Interactions (NO2) in Niewodnicza«ski Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN, in group of prof. A. Maj, which conducting experimental studies o hot atomic nuclei by measuring of the γ decay for the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR). I have developed the numerical codes, which allow to phenomenological investigation of the GDR strength functions, its temperature, spin and nuclear shape dependence, with use the Thermal Shape Fluctuation (TSF) method. Obtained results allowed for the proposing of some experiments, partially done already. Since the TSF method requires the calculations of 2
the potential energy in the multidimensional deformation parameters space, I created a database of such energies for a wide range of nuclei (Z=16-150) and spins. It gives the opportunity for a fast estimation of the yrast line, the spin range for the shape transitions and its inuence on the shape of the GDR strength function. This calculation are available on-line: mazurek/index.php. The collaboration with the groups in UMCS in Lublin and IPHC in Strasbourg is focused mainly on the investigation of the exotic symmetries in atomic nuclei and systematic calculations of total energy for the wide range of nuclei in various deformation parameters sets are available on-line. In 2009 I was appointed for a two-years post-doc of PROVA project nanced by the Agence National de la Recherche in the Grand Accélérateur National d'ions Lourds (GANIL), Caen, (France), where I have collaborated with the group of prof. J.-P. Wieleczko, on the theoretical description of the ssion process, with help of the solving the set of Langevin equations in the three-dimensional deformation parameter space. The experimental data for 118 Ba with a beam energy 6AMeV and 111 In with beam energies: 5.9 AMeV i 10.6 AMeV allowed to verify the correctness of the method for the ssion of rare earth nuclei. I performed studies of various parameters of the potential energy models, viscosity and transition coecients. The comparison of the theoretical mass and charge distributions of the ssion fragments and evaporation residues to experimental data gives the promising results. After return to IFJ-PAN I continue the numerical codes development and calculations for other reaction to better description of the ssion dynamics. This work is done in collaboration with group in Omsk (Russia) and the group of INDRA detector in GANIL, Caen, France. Additionaly I am involved in the project concerning the description of the ssion dynamics with the total energy and mass tensors within the self consistent approach based on the Approximated Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (ATDHFB) method in collaboration with group of prof. W. Nazarewicz from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, (Oak Ridge, USA). The innovative application of the mean eld theory with the density functionals (Density Functional Theory) to calculate axial-non axial quadrupole energy surfaces allowed to estimate the spontaneous ssion life times of 264 Fm and this is very important step in the study of ssion dynamics by the DFT. The work in experimental groups of IFJ-PAN and GANIL, allows me for participation in around 20 experiments, done in laboratories: GSI (Darmstad, Niemcy), LNL (Legnaro, Italy), INFN (Catania, Italy), GANIL (Caen, France), OCL (Oslo, Norwegia), what allowed me to obtain the wide knowledge on experimental observables and its theoretical interpretation. 3

A) My scientic achievement is presented in monograph: Nuclear shape symmetries and their breaking author: Katarzyna Mazurek published by: Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków 2013, ISBN The presented results The surface of the nucleus and its shape are contractual terms but it turns out that make it easy to discuss a number of processes in nuclear physics. The deformation of the nucleus can be linked to the geometric symmetries and it aects the symmetries of phenomenological Hamiltonians, so they can be tested. The keynote of this monograph is to link the behavior of geometric symmetry, derived from the theory of point groups, with the single particle levels, its densities, microscopic energies and rotational bands. As an interesting problem is the breaking symmetries, I paid special attention to experimental observations of the geometric symmetry breaking in fast and hot rotating nuclei, by the Giant Dipole Resonance strenght function. This process is very sensitive for the nuclear shape changes. The manuscript contains introduction, four chapters and summary and covers such subjects as: 1. High-range nuclear symmetries and its experimental evidence The main subject of this manuscript is the study of the geometrical symmetries in atomic nuclei and specially, the existence of the nuclei which can have the shape available to interpret by the point group theory. It turns out then the specic deformations lead to a formation of the big energy gaps between the single particle levels. The traditional energy gap are connected to increasing of the nuclear stability. The calculations are made within the macroscopic-microscopic total energy for all known (and unknown) experimentally even-even nuclei (Z=16-150) in the multidimensional deformation parameters space.the method includes the macroscopic part (energy in the form of the Folded-Yukawa) and part of the microscopic energy with shell corrections of Strutinskiego and pairing energy obtained with BCS model with a particle number projection (PNP) approach. These results allow to nd nuclei which are more sensible for exotic shapes. Such exotic shapes are related to the tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries. In the manuscript there is a broad discussion on the formation of the energy gaps in the single particle spectra and the single particle level densities in function of the exotic deformation parameters in superheavy nuclei especially around Z = 126 and N = 196, since there was the largest energy gap for a non-zero value tetrahedral deformation parameters and around Z = 118 and N = 178 for the octahedral parameters. The calculations permit to prepare the map of nuclides, vulnerable on taking the exotic shapes. 4
The experimental evidence of such shapes can be done by the negative parity rotational bands with missing low lying E2 transitions. The tests of the kinetic and dynamical moments for few rotation spectra is shown by applied the cranking model. Therefore in the monograph were shown comparisons of kinetic and dynamic moments for a number of isotopes of nuclei (Th, U), extracted from the experimental bands and calculated using the 'Cranking' method. The experimental band for the ground-state deformation of the nucleus I have reconstructed assuming the deformation similar to the reading of the maps of the global minimum of the total energy. For the negative-parity band state reproduction I used the tetrahedral deformation found as local minima in the multidimensional calculation. The macroscopic-microscopic calculations have been done for cold nuclei and in such a case I investigated the tetrahedral and octahedral symmetry but it is also important to discuss the inuence of the temperature on the symmetry breaking or conservation. 2. Theoretical calculations of the GDR strength function in Thermal Shape Fluctuation method for description of the excited compound nucleus with the LSD macroscopic energy The macroscopic energy in Lublin-Strasbourg Drop model (LSD) of the rotating nuclei is calculated in ve-dimensional deformation parameters space and projected in two dimensional surface. This permits for study the changes of the potential energy in function of the nuclear shape. The nuclear shape uctuations gives a possibility of an investigation of the Giant Dipole Resonance strength function depending on spin and the temperature of the nucleus. The results are compared with the experimental data for GDR strenght function shape and its width for 46 Ti, 132 Ce, 147 Eu and several others have been tested for the master thesis work of M. Matejska. The main focus is on the interpretation of the shape changes of GDR strength function with increasing spin, because the nuclear deformation is changing from oblate by triaxial to prolate which is called the Jacobi shape transition. This shape transition breaks the axial symmetry of the nuclear shape. The example of the comparison between the theory and experiment is provided. The Jacobi shape transition can be also investigated by the study of the anisotropy coecients for γ ray distribution. 3. The nuclear shape transition: quadrupole deformation versus octupole deformation - Poincaré shape transition The next part of the manuscript is the study of the reection symmetry breaking which is manifested by the Poincaré shape transition for fast rotating, hot nuclei around Z=56. The calculations are in progress and it should help for the preparation of the experiments with the new detector PARIS. In the discussion of the extremal spins, which are associate with the Poincaré shape transition, the main issue is the ssion barrier heights, thus the inuence of the congruence energy on the potential energy surfaces has been investigated and a new prescription for this term has been suggested. This ameliorated term allows me for a better reproduction of the experimental barrier heights for medium mass nuclei, and more reliable estimation of the maximum spin of the nucleus. The Poincaré shape transition is another example of the geometrical symmetry breaking because the quadrupole deformed 5
nucleus has the neck and it changes the fragment mass ratio from one (reection symmetry) to small values (reection asymmetry) with increasing the spin. In the monography I discuss the results for barium and cadmium isotopes but the preliminary results for many other even-even nuclei allow to choose roughly the range of nuclei sensitive on the Poincaré transition. 4. Collective Hamiltonian and the description of the quadrupole and octupole vibrations The minimization of the nuclear energy in the deformation parameters space permits to obtain the static shape of the nucleus for the given spin. Qualitative estimation of the most probable dynamical deformation is possible after taking into account the zero-point vibration motions. The collective Hamiltonian, which describes such a motion, should be written in the space similar to the space of the deformation parameters. From practical reasons, in this manuscript only one dimensional Hamiltonian is shown to describe the octupole vibration and two dimensional Hamiltonian is written for quadrupole vibrations. The potential part of this Hamiltonian is the macroscopic energy obtained with LSD approach for various spins, which allow to receive the distribution of the quadrupole and octupole deformation parameters in a function of the nuclear rotation velocity. The octupole parameters distribution is specially interesting because it could be interpreted as the ssion fragment mass distribution for given compound nucleus. Thus the application of the collective Hamiltonian to vibration description permits for breaking the geometrical symmetries of the atomic nucleus.
