1 Dear Fifth Grader, Your math packet was created to give you practice with applying your skills. Remember use what you know to figure things out and to come up with a strategy to solve. Please be sure to show your work as we did throughout fourth grade. In cases of arriving at the incorrect answer, it helps us to determine if you made an error in computation, or you are struggling with the concept of how to solve that particular problem. This just helps us to learn from our mistakes and continue to sharpen our math skills. Remember to pace yourself, a little each day or every other day, rather than completing the packet all at once, helps us stay current with our skills. Just like we did for homework and classwork, please try once, twice, three times; if you are struggling move on and comeback, if this is a question you would like to discuss when we return in August, please highlight and jot down what you didn t understand. I am looking forward to another math journey with you net year! I have listed some websites for you to visit to practice skills, as well as challenge yourself. Let me know which sites you liked the best and feel helped you the most! Have a great summer! Mrs. B I am a big fan of this site as I feel that the audio and visual review of concepts delivered step-by-step is invaluable! Apps: Math Drills and Splash Math (Grades 3/4) - /home/inde Go under Flashcards or Game Room on the left side of the screen. They can practice adding, subtracting and multiplying. Very important to know the addition, subtraction and multiplication facts from memorization or within a couple seconds. Select numbers then Math Trainer for adding, subtracting and multiplication. Or at the home screen select games and pick a game to play. Select activities then select grade level. Click on Search. At the top pick Third or Fourth for a challenge. Choose any of the activities like multiplication then select play option toward the top of the screen. 20 Questions and Countdown games are good ones. Lots of fun games to choose from.
2 Math Algebra Algebra Action! Value of The Epression A variable represents the unknown number in the epression or equation. For eample, 4 t = 12. The letter t represents the number which multiplies by 4 to equal 12. An epression in math is a sentence containing numbers and the operations. Below are eamples of epressions: We can find the value of the epression 7 + y by placing the variable with the number. For eample: if y = 1. Put in the place of y (3 ) - (6 2) y y Calculate it 7 + = 12 Find the value of the epressions below. Show your work h 4 + y + 7 (12 - b) + If h = 4 If y = 8 If b = 3 ( m) + 1 (4 p) (6 w) If m = 6 If p = 10 If w = 3 Copyright by Education.com More worksheets at
3 Math Algebra Writing Epressions With Variables An epression in math is a sentence containing numbers and the operations. Below are eamples of epressions: (3) - (6 + 2) y - 20 A variable is a letter (, y, t, etc.) that represents the unknown number in an epression or equation. When a variable is net to a number, it means multiply. For eample: 4t = 12 means 4 multiplied by t equals 12. #2 Read the sentences below and write an epression. See the eample below. There are y letters in the bag. They are divided into 4 equal groups. Write an epression of the letters after dividing. The epression of division is Number of letters is y Divided into 4 y 4 There are 20 people in the room. They are divided into m equal groups. Write the division epression of the number of people in each group. Ashley has 2 flowers. The number of flowers Sam has is z times more than what Ashley has. Write a multiplication epression of flowers that Sam has. A piece of wood is 20 feet long. It was cut into k equal pieces to make a track. Write a division epression of the length of each piece of wood. Mary has p handbags. Lynn has 2 times more than Mary. Write the multiplication epression of the handbags that Lynn has. 11 Name Date Find the Ratios A ratio is the comparison between two or more numbers. Look at the eample above. There are si squares and eight stars, so the ratio of squares to stars are 6 to 8 or 6:8. We are also able to say that the ratio of stars to squares is 8 to 6 or 8:6. We can simplify the ratio by finding the biggest common number and divide it by both numbers. The number of stars and squares is divisible by two. So 6:8 = 3:4, and 8:6 = 4:3. Answer the questions below. 1) What is the ratio of stars to squares? : 2) What is the ratio of circles to triangles? : 3) What is the ratio of circles to triangles simplified? : 4) What is the ratio of triangles to circles? : ) What is the ratio of triangles to circles simplified? : 6) What is the ratio of circles to triangles simplified? :
