1 Physics 208 Review Questions These problems are shorter than exam problems, closer to a sub-part of a problem or slightly more, so that you can move through several of them quickly. 1) Two charges of 1.0 µc each are fixed in space four meters apart. Calculate the electric potential relative to infinity at a point bisecting the line connecting the charges two charges. 2) In the previous problem, how much work must you do to move a 1.0 µc charge originally centered between the charges along the line joining the charges so that it is 1 meter closer to one of them? 3) The two parallel plates of a capacitor are connected to a battery while they are pulled apart to twice their original separation. What is the ratio of the final charge on each plate to the initial charge?

2 4) A cylindrical tube of length 100 cm and diameter 4 cm has 10 µc of charge distributed uniformly on its surface. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the electric field 1 cm outside the tube, and 1 cm inside the tube. (Ignore end effects, essentially assuming an infinitely long tube). 5) A metal wire of resistance R is cut lengthwise into three equal pieces. These are connected side-by-side to form a new wire. What is the resistance of this new wire? (This might be a hard one!) 6) A particle of charge 10µC, mass 10 mg and speed 100 m/s takes 0.1 seconds to move through a narrow spatial region where a B-field of 1.0T is perpendicular to the motion. What is the angle between the initial direction and the final direction of the particle s motion. (Hint: use the impulse approximation to find the change in momentum due to the B-field).

3 7) A 10 turn coil of wire of diameter 10 cm and current 1 A is held at a 45 angle with respect to a 1.0T magnetic field. How much work can the coil do when you let it go and it rotates to its low energy configuration. 8) A 5.0 cm diameter coil has 20 turns and a resistance of 0.5 Ω. A magnetic field perpendicular to the coil has a time dependence B = 0.02t t 2. a) Find the magnitude of the current in the coil as a function of time. b) Find the net force on the loop as a function of time. 9) A 1-cm diameter, 10 turn coil of wire with a resistance of 0.2Ω is in a uniform 1.0 mt magnetic field, and is connected to a 1.0µF capacitor. The coil is oriented for maximum flux, and the field is suddenly turned off. What is the voltage across the capacitor immediately after the field goes to zero?

Calculate its wavelength. 11) An electromagnetic wave with an E-field of amplitude 10 V/m is linearly polarized at an angle of 30 with respect to the transmission axis of a linear polarizer. What is the amplitude of the E-field of the electromagnetic wave after it passes through the polarizer. 12) You use a thin lens to project an image of a 1 cm object onto a screen 1 meter away. If you want the image to be 10 cm across, what focal length lens should you use?

5 13) You use your cell phone, which broadcasts at 800 MHz, and you are behind two large buildings with only a 5 m space between them. The buildings absorb the 800 MHz cell-phone signal. What is the approximate angular divergence of the EM wave after it is past the buildings? 14) Consider a two-slit interference experiment. The central maximum has an intensity of 10 mw/cm 2. Now one of the slits is covered. Now what is the intensity of the central maximum? 15) A double slit is illuminated simultaneously with orange light of wavelength 600 nm and light of an unknown wavelength. The m=4 bright fringe of the unknown wavelength overlaps with the m=3 fringe of the orange light. a) is the unknown light longer or shorter wavelength than the orange light? b) Calculate the wavelength of the unknown light.
