INR-TH Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies Xiv: v1 [hep-th] 6 Jul 2016 O. A. Evseev, O. I. We conside genelized Glileon theoies within genel eltivity in fou-dimensionl spce-time. We povide the gument showing tht the genelized Glileons descibed by wide clss of Lgngins do not dmit stble, sttic, spheiclly symmetic semi-closed wolds. We lso show tht in clss of theoies with p = ρ (whee p is tnsvese pessue nd ρ is enegy density), semi-closed wolds, if exist, would be obseved s objects of negtive mss. 1. Intoduction nd summy Models with Glileons e of inteest, s they dmit stble, null enegy condition (NEC) violting solutions [1 6]. The popety of NEC-violtion mkes Glileons ntul cndidtes fo fields tht my suppot Loentzin womholes [7 12] nd/o semiclosed wolds [13 16]. It hs been shown, howeve, tht symptoticlly flt sttic nd spheiclly symmetic womholes e unstble in clss of genelized Glileon theoies [17, 18]. The min pupose of this ppe is to extend this esult to semi-closed wolds. Figue 1. Semi-closed wold. Geomety of sttic, spheiclly symmetic, symptoticlly flt semi-closed wold is schemticlly shown in Fig. 1. It is descibed by the following metic (signtue

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 2 (+,,, )): with symptotics ds 2 = 2 ()dt 2 b 2 ()d 2 c 2 ()γ αβ dx α dx β 0: 0, b b 0, c b 0, :, b b, c b ( * ), whee γ αβ dx α dx β is the metic of unit two-dimensionl sphee, 0, b 0,, b nd * e positive constnts, see Fig. 2. A defining fetue of semi-closed wold metic is the existence of thot nd hence non-vnishing * > 0. c() * Figue 2. Behvio of c() fo semi-closed wold. Let us summize ou findings. Spheicl symmety dicttes tht the non-vnishing components of the stess-enegy tenso e T0 0, T nd Tβ α = T Ω δβ α. In Glileon theoies, s well s in mny othe scl theoies, the stess-enegy tenso stisfies the eltion T0 0 = T Ω, i.e. p = ρ, whee p is tnsvese pessue nd ρ is enegy density. We show tht in genel eltivity this popety lone ensues tht the mss of semi-closed wold, s seen by outside obseve, is negtive. Even though negtive mss objects my not be pthologicl in Genel Reltivity [19 21], this esult clls fo moe detiled nlysis of concete theoies. Hee we specify to genelized Glileon theoy with the Lgngin L = F (π, X) + K(π, X) π, (1) whee π is scl field, F nd K e bity functions nd the following nottion is used: X = μ π μ π, π = μ μ π. We show tht thee is eithe ghost o gdient instbility of petubtions bout ny non-singul semi-closed wold solution iespectively of the foms of the Lgngin functions F nd K. This is ou min esult: Glileons do not suppot sttic, spheiclly symmetic semi-closed wolds.

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 3 The ppe is ognized s follows. We obtin the esult on the negtive mss of semi-closed wold in theoies with T 0 0 = T Ω in Sec. 2. The popeties of the genelized Glileon theoies with the Lgngin (1) e discussed in Sec. 3. Sec. 4 gives the gument tht sttic, spheiclly symmetic semi-closed wolds e unstble in the genelized Glileon theoies. 2. Negtive mss In wht follows we use the guge b = 1, (2) so tht the semi-closed wold metic is ds 2 = 2 dt d2 c 2 γ αβ dx α dx β, whee () nd c() obey the following boundy conditions: 0: 0, c 0, :, c *, In this guge the components of the Einstein tenso G μ ν Rν μ 1 2 δμ ν R ed [ ( ( c ) ) ] G 0 0 = 2 2 c 2 1 G = 2 2 [ c G α β = δ α β G Ω, c c ( ( c c [ G Ω = 2 + To simplify fomuls below we set 8πG = 1. c 2 ( c + 2 c 2 ) ] ) c 2 c + c 2 c, ) ]. 2 2 c c, Befoe specifying to the genelized Glileons, let us conside ny theoy whose stess-enegy tenso, in the spheiclly symmetic nd sttic cse, hs the popety T 0 0 = T Ω, (3) whee T Ω detemines the ngul pt, Tβ α = T Ω δβ α. In this sitution the Einstein equtions imply G 0 0 = G Ω, i.e. + ( ) 2 c c ( c c ) c 2 = 0.

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 4 Upon the chnge of vibles γ() = 2 (), the ltte eqution is witten s γ u u γ + 2 = 0. u() = c 2 (), This eqution cn be used to expess γ() in tems of u(): γ() = u() 2 C d + D, (4) u 2 ( ) whee C nd D e constnts. We now conside the symptotic behvio of this solution nd detemine C nd D. As tends to 0, u() tends to 2 / 2 0 nd we find fom (4) tht [ γ() 2 () = C ] 1 + O (). 3 The equiement tht γ() is egul t = 0 gives C = 0. As tends to, u() tends to ( * ) 2 / 2 nd eq. (4) gives γ() 2 () = * C D( * ) 2 + o. 3 * * Since γ() should not gow s, we hve D = 0. Thus, the eltion between γ() nd u() is γ() = u() 2 d. (5) u 2 ( ) To find the mss of semi-closed wold s seen by n outside obseve, we note tht the dius of distnt sphee is R = *. Theefoe, upon the escling of the time coodinte T = t, eq. (5) shows tht the symptotics of the metic s is ( ds 2 = 1 R ) g dt 2 1 dr 2 R 2 γ αβ dx α dx β, R 1 Rg R whee * R g = 2 (6) 3 Since * > 0, see Fig. 2, we conclude tht in theoies obeying (3), semi-closed wolds, if exist, would be obseved s objects of negtive mss.

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 5 3. Genelized Glileon theoy 3.1. Stess-enegy tenso The stess-enegy tenso fo the theoy (1) is T μν = 2F X μ π ν π + 2K X π μ π ν π μ K ν π ν K μ π g μν F + g μν g λρ λ K ρ π, which in the sttic spheiclly symmetic cse nd in the guge (2) becomes T0 0 = F (π ) 2 K π + 2 (π ) 2 (π ) K X, T = F + (π ) 2 K π + 2 (π ) 3 + 2c K X 2 (π ) 2 F X, c T α β = δ α β T Ω, T Ω = F (π ) 2 K π + 2 (π ) 2 (π ) K X. Note tht it hs the popety (3), so the esult of Sec. 2 pplies Stbility conditions The petubtions bout sttic, spheiclly symmetic bckgound (π π + χ) e descibed by the following effective qudtic Lgngin [17] (in the guge (2)) whee the effective metic is L (2) = 2 G 00 χ 2 2 G (χ ) 2 c 2 G Ω γ αβ α χ β χ, G 00 = F X K π 2 K Xπ 2K X (π ) 4 2 K X c G Ω = F X K π 2 K Xπ 2K X (π ) 2 2 K X c c π 2 K X π K 2 X (π ) 4 G = F X 2F XX (π ) 2 K π + 2 K Xπ 2 2 K X π ( + 2K XX (π ) 2 (π ) + 2K XX (π ) 3 ( + 2c c c π K 2 X (π ) 4 + 2c c ) ) + 3KX 2 (π ) 4 nd tems without deivtives of χ e omitted. Heefte π denotes the bckgound field. The bckgound is stble s long s G 00 > 0, G Ω 0, G 0. (7) Fom now on we e inteested in the fist two of these conditions. Using the combintion of the Einstein equtions G 0 0 G = T0 0 T, tht is ] 2 2 c c = 2 (π ) [ F 2 X K π + K X (π ) 2 K X π + 2c, c

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 6 we wite (π ) 2 c G 00 = c + 2 K X (π ) 3 c 2 c + 2 K X (π ) 3, (8) (π ) 2 G Ω = G 00 (π ) K X (π ) 3 c c, (9) It is now ntul, following [18], to intoduce the vible Q = c c + 2 K X (π ) 3 nd ewite eqs. (8), (9) s follows: (π ) 2 G 00 = Q Q 2, (π ) 2 G Ω = Q Q ) ( Q c c c c. Since c /c tends to 1/ both s 0 nd s, it is convenient to intoduce the vible q = Q 1. The expessions fo G 00 nd G Ω in tems of q e (π ) 2 G 00 = q 2q q2, (π ) 2 G Ω = q 2q q2 + 2 ( q + 4. Poof of instbility ) 1 c c c c, The min ide of the poof below is to show tht q is negtive t = 0 nd positive t = nd, using these popeties, show tht the stbility conditions (7) e violted fo ny non-singul configution The sign of q t = 0 We e going to pove tht q is negtive t = 0. To this end, let us ssume the opposite, q 0 > 0. (10) We now distinguish thee types of the symptotic behvio of q t = 0. Fist, let us conside the cse when q gows, s 0, fste thn 1/: This leds to q 1. (11) (π ) 2 G 00 q q 2 > 0. (12)

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 7 We now integte the inequlity in (12) fom 0 to nd obtin 1 q >, which contdicts (11) unde the ssumption (10). This mens tht q, if positive, cnnot gow fste thn 1/. The second cse to conside is q 1/: q 0 = α 1 + o, whee α > 0 becuse of (10). In this cse we hve (π ) 2 G 00 α(1 + α) 1 = + o. (13) 2 2 The ight hnd side of (13) is negtive, mening tht positive q 1/ is lso impossible. Let us finlly conside the cse which leds to q 0 = o ( 1), (14) (π ) 2 G 00 q 2q > 0. (15) Unde the ssumption of positive q this is the equivlent to dq q > 2d > d. (16) We my now choose 1 nd 2 > 1 so tht q > 0 in the whole intevl [ 1, 2 ] nd integte the inequlity (16) fom 1 to 2. We get q 1 1 > q 2 2. (17) The condition (15) unde the ssumption (10) equies q to be negtive, mening tht q is monotonous by decesing, which leds to the contdiction between (17) nd (14). Thus, the guments bove pove tht q < 0 ne = The sign of q t = We needed only G 00 to pove tht q is negtive ne = 0. To pove its positivity t = we lso need G Ω. Since c * s, we hve c c = 1 + * 1 + o. (18) 2 2 Now, we hve [1 M/ ( * )] s (with negtive M, see (6)), hence 1 = O. (19) 2 Using (18) nd (19) we obtin (π ) 2 G Ω = q q 2 2 * 3 + O ( q 2 ) 1 + o 3

Instbility of Sttic Semi-Closed Wolds in Genelized Glileon Theoies 8 We now pove tht q > 0. Let us ssume the opposite: q < 0. (20) Let us gin conside the thee types of symptotic behvio of q. The fist cse is tht s which leds to q 1, (π ) 2 G 00 q q 2 > 0. Integting q /q 2 < 1 fom 1 to 2 > 1 we obtin 1 q( 2 ) > 1 q( 1 ) + 2 1, Since q( 1 ) < 0 by ssumption, nd 2 cn be bitily lge, thee is singulity point t which 1/q( 2 ) = 0. This shows tht q < 0 cnnot tend to zeo slowe thn 1/. The second cse to conside is q = α 1 + o, whee α < 0 unde the ssumption (20). This leds to (π ) 2 G Ω α(1 α) 1 = + o. (21) 2 2 The ight hnd side of (21) is negtive, so the bckgound is unstble. Finlly, we conside the cse q = o ( 1). (22) Then the expession fo G Ω is (π ) 2 G Ω = q q 2 2 * o. (23) 3 Unde the ssumptions (20) nd (22) thee is egion whee q > 0: q tends to 0 fom below, so tht it gows t lest somewhee. In this egion the dominnt pt of G Ω is given by thee negtive tems in eq. (23), which contdicts the stbility. The guments bove show tht q hs to be positive s tends to. We hve lso shown tht it hs to be negtive t = 0. This mens tht thee is point n whee q( n ) = 0, q ( n ) 0. The ight hnd side of eq. (10) is non-positive t n which contdicts the stbility conditions (7). This bings us to the conclusion tht the stble, sttic, spheiclly symmetic semi-closed wolds do not exist in fou-dimensionl Glileon theoies with the Lgngins of the fom (1).
