2 Media Services Softball Weekly Honors The SEC will announce a Player of the Week, Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week each Monday beginning Feb. 12. Weekly honors will shift to Tuesdays once conference plays begin. Nominations for the awards are made by the softball SID contacts and are selected by a vote of the SEC Communications staff. Members of the media wishing to receive these announcements should Jill Skotarczak (jskotarczak@sec.org). SEC Softball on the Internet Information about Southeastern Conference softball is available on the Internet via the SEC s web site The site will be updated each week, following the completion of the weekly release. SEC Tournament The 2018 SEC Softball Tournament will be held May 9-12 at the Mizzou Softball Stadium in Columbia, Mo., hosted by the University of Missouri. The tournament will be a 12-team, single-elimination format, beginning on Wednesday and concluding with the championship game on Saturday. The 12 tournament teams shall be determined based on the highest percentage of wins during regular-season Conference competition. The winner of the tournament receives the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. 4 SEC Softball Player of the Week Demi Turner Alabama Senior IF Huntsville, Texas Turner led the Crimson Tide offense in their series sweep over No. 9/10 Texas A&M, going 7-for-11 (.636) this weekend at the plate. She earned at least one hit and scored at least one run in all three games against the Aggies. Turner reached base safely in eight of her 11 at-bats and struck out only once. She tied a career-high with four hits in Sunday s series finale. Her fourth hit of the day was a walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning to complete the sweep on Senior Day. Ocasio went 2-0 in the circle at Missouri this past weekend. In game two, she struck out 10 batters in her sixth complete-game shutout of the season. In game three, Ocasio came in relief and fanned two batters in 4.2 innings of work as the Gators earned the series sweep over the Tigers. Allie Walljasper LSU Senior RHP Manteca, Calif. Walljasper recorded two complete-game victories over No. 15/16 Arkansas as LSU secured the series sweep to close out the regular season. She finished the weekend with a 0.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts. SEC Softball Freshman of the Week Mallory Peyton Kentucky DP/1B Madisonville, Ky. Peyton had some instrumental hits in Kentucky s series win over No. 12 South Carolina. In game one on Friday night, the designated hitter recorded her first career grand slam with a shot to left center in the bottom of the first inning to give UK a 5-0 lead. In game two on Sunday, Peyton knocked a three-run homer to center field in the fourth to help seal the series win. In game three, she hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly to plate UK s first run of the game and drive in her eighth RBI of the weekend. 5 USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List Seven SEC student-athletes are among the Top 25 finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women s collegiate softball, recognizes the outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female players across the country. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced Wednesday, May 9, and the Top 3 announced Wednesday, May 23. The 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed Tuesday, May 29. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Ballots with the 10 finalists will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 Women s College World Series. This award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes. The 25 finalists will be narrowed down to 10 and announced on Thursday, May 10. The top three finalists will be selected and released on Wednesday, May 23. The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony at the 2018 Women s College World Series banquet on Tuesday, May 29.
