1 Brooks street Journal Friday, March 9, 2012 Issue: 6 Should kids have Kindles in class? By: Aimee Leal Should kids have Kindles in class? Well I think so. On Kindles you can read a lot of book s like they both include! All the Kindles in the Kindle family have a lot of different types. Like the Kindle, Kindle Touch, and the best... Kindle Fire. Kindles have great reasons to use them. No one can determine how long the book your reading, it could be short, it could be long. Either way no one will know. Did you know that you can upload a PDF file, Word, and Text files to your Kindle? Imagine, having an electronic library of student work readily available for all of your students to enjoy. This way you don t have to worry about your kids taking passes, putting clips on the wall, or taking their cards and going down to the LMC. Then possibly being late for class! On Kindle you can play games (sometimes it can annoying when other people are trying to read). But anyways back to the subject, kids play games but the kids that have them distract the other kids from reading, doing work, or homework. On the bright side kids can play educational game apps. For example, math facts, reading, division, writing and other things to do. I think teachers should let students play educational games, it can increase their knowledge. Since some kids in my class have Kindles including me, so I know how it is to have a Kindle myself. Classmates in my homeroom have Kindles, most of them normally play games and distract kids instead of reading. So, my teacher splits them up so they are not around each other. Others like to enjoy and read a good book instead of playing games and disrupting other people. But still I think kids should have the opportunity to play educational games if they don t want to read. 1

3 DID YOU KNOW? President s Day By: Lauren Coates To most of you, Presidents Day is just another chance to get out of school. But in reality, it s definitely much more, Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February, so this year it was on the 20th. It was originally TWO holidays, one to honor George Washington, and one to honor Abraham Lincoln also known as Honest Abe. George Washington was born on February 22, As most of you already know, he was our 1st president ever and he was the general that lead the U.S. army to victory over Great Britain. Once the colonists had won the war, they wanted George to be their leader. He accepted the title and served president for two terms (eight years.) This great president died in the year Abe Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809 in a log cabin. He grew up on several different pioneer farms, that seemed to spring up all the time. Believe it or not Abe had little and next-to-no schooling. In coming years, slowly but surely, his love for politics grew. As a politician he rose higher and higher on the scale of importance. Finally, he became president. But sadly, in 1865 he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. So, next year, when Presidents Day rolls around again, you can tell all of your friends and family what this great holiday is truly about. 3
4 DID YOU KNOW? St. Patrick's day By: Angelica Balcazar Happy St. Patrick Day!. Are you excited about St. Patrick s Day? I bet you are! It is on Saturday, March 17, 2012 which is fast approaching. We wear green because it is a tradition to the United States. Don't be saying Oww when you get pinched because you are not wearing green. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated with patron dancing and feasting on the traditional meal of bacon and cottages. Did you know that parades didn t begin in Ireland, but in America? In Ireland, people would burn leaves and boughs. They would spread the ashes on the fields in order to make the land richer. Ireland made the land rich and wealthy. So they would grow money in their backyard. St. Patrick s Day is celebrated in Dublin. You will see a spectacular fireworks show, live music, street theater, and the traditional parade. The three largest parades of recent years have been held in Dublin, New York, and Birmingham, England. Parades also take place in other central cities like, London, Paris, Rome, Moscow, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, and throughout America. In the United States, St. Patrick s Day would not be St. Patrick's Day unless the Chicago River is dyed green. Hope you re ready for St. Patrick s Day! 4
