11 THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA W. Kendal Bushe, Associate Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering 6250 Applied Science Lane Vancouver, B. C. Canada V6T 1Z4 Tel: (604) Fax: (604) March 14, 2012 Re: Letter of Reference for M. Mahdi Salehi. To whom it may concern, I am delighted to be providing this letter of reference in support of Mahdi Salehi s application for a Post-doctoral Fellowship within the Sustainable Science Building. I have been Mahdi s PhD supervisor in his studies at UBC since All of my experience with Mr. Salehi has indicated to me that he will be an outstanding fellow. Mr. Salehi has shown outstanding abilities as a researcher in his time working with me. He has worked very independently and has been driven by an earnest scientific interest in the research. He is very careful in his approach to research. His work has required delving into two different computer codes, modifying subroutines, writing new routines and optimizing the resulting modified codes. This work will provide him with invaluable experience moving forward in understanding the underlying principles of energy simulations in buildings. Mr. Salehi s research is now essentially complete. He is continuing to run the last simulation needed for his thesis, where we are just waiting for the data to statistically converge; he is nearly finished writing up his thesis (one chapter remains). While I have funding available for him to continue the work as a PDF in my group, he has taken the decision to pursue further diversity in his career by shifting the focus of his work from the fundamental, supply-side of the energy equation (trying to develop tools to improve design of gas turbines and internal combustion engines) to the end-use side by looking into the energy efficiency of buildings. Here, the skills he has learned in studying the detailed simulation of turbulent reacting flows will relatively easily translate into understanding the far more simple techniques used in current practice in building energy simulations. I think Mr. Salehi will be the ideal individual to drive our efforts in building energy simulation forward. He works well as a team-member and has had considerable experience with supervising undergraduate and junior graduate students in my group. He is soft-spoken, patient and highly respectful all attributes that are important when dealing with collaboration in an academic setting. Altogether, I think that he has the skill set needed to lead our energy efforts in the SBSP forward rapidly over the next year. I very strongly support this application and urge my colleages to do the same. Your sincerely, W. Kendal Bushe Associate Professor
