arxiv:6.789v [math.ap] Aug 7 STRICHARTZ ESTIMATES FOR THE MAGNETIC SCHRÖDINGER EQUATION WITH POTENTIALS V OF CRITICAL DECAY SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH Abstract. We study the Strichartz estimates for the magnetic Schrödinger euation in dimension n 3. More specifically, for all Schrödinger admissible pairs (r, ), we establish the estimate e ith f L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r,,h f (R n ) when the operator H = A +V satisfies suitable conditions. In the purely electric case A, we extend the class of potentials V to the Fefferman- Phong class. In doing so, we apply a weighted estimate for the Schrödinger euation developed by Ruiz and Vega. Moreover, for the endpoint estimate of the magnetic case in R 3, we investigate an euivalence H 4f L r (R 3 ) C H,r ( ) 4f L r (R 3 ) and find sufficient conditions on H and r for which the euivalence holds.. Introduction Consider the Cauchy problem of the magnetic Schrödinger euation in R n+ (n 3): { i t u Hu =, (x,t) R n R, (.) u(x,) = f(x), f S. Here, S is the Schwartz class, and H is the electromagnetic Schrödinger operator H = A +V(x), A = ia(x), where A = (A,A,,A n ) : R n R n and V : R n R. The magnetic field B is defined by B = DA (DA) T M n n, where (DA) ij = xi A j, (DA) T denotes the transpose of DA, and M n n is the space of n n real matrices. In dimension n = 3, B is determined by the cross product with the vector field curla: Bv = curla v (v R 3 ). In this paper, we consider the Strichartz type estimate (.) u L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r,,h f L (R n ), where u = e ith f is the solution to problem (.) with solution operator e ith, and study some conditions on A, V and pairs (r,) for which the estimate holds. 2 SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH For the unperturbed case of (.) that A and V, Strichartz [33] proved the ineuality e it f L (n+) n (R n+ ) C n f L (R n ), where e it is the solution operator given by e it f(x) = (π) n R n e ix ξ+it ξ f(ξ)dξ. Later, Keel and Tao [3] generalized this ineuality to the following: (.3) e it f L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r, f (R n ) holds if and only if (r,) is a Schrödinger admissible pair; that is, r,, (r,) (,) and n r + = n. In the purely electric case of (.) that A, the decay V(x) / x has been known to be critical for the validity of the Strichartz estimate. It was shown by Goldberg, Vega and Visciglia [] that for each ǫ >, there is a counterexample of V = V ǫ with V(x) x +ǫ for x such that the estimate fails to hold. In a postive direction, Rodnianski and Schlag [6] proved (.4) u L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r,,v f L (R n ) for non-endpoint admissible pairs (r, ) (i.e., > ) with almost critical decay V(x) /(+ x ) +ǫ. On the other hand, Bur, Planchon, Stalkerand Tahvildar- Zadeh [3] established (.4) for critical decay V(x) / x with some technical conditions on V but the endpoint case included. Other than these, there have been many related positive results; see, e.g., [], [8], [], [6] and []. In regard to the purely electric case, the following is the first main result of this paper whose proof is given in section. Theorem.. Let n 3 and A. Then there exists a constant c n >, depending only on n, such that for any V F p ( n < p < n ) satisfying (.5) V F p c n, estimate (.4) holds for all n r + = n and >. Moreover, if V L n in addition, then (.4) holds for the endpoint case (r,) = ( n n,). Here, F p is the Fefferman-Phong class with norm V F p = sup r ( r>,x R n r n V(x) p dx B r(x ) ) p <, whichisclosedundertranslation. FromthedefinitionofF p, wedirectlygetl n, F p forallp < n. ThustheclassFp (p < n )clearlycontainsthepotentialsofcritical decay V(x) / x. Moreover, F p (p < n ) is strictly larger than L n,. For instance, if the potential function (.6) V(x) = φ ( x ) x, φ L p (S n ), x n < p < n, then V need not belong to L n,, but V F p. According to Theorem., for the non-endpoint case, we do not need any other conditions on V but its uantitative bound (.5), so that we can extend and much simplify the known results for potentials V(x) / x (e.g., φ L (S n ) in (.6)), mentioned above. To prove this, we use a weighted estimate developed by
STRICHARTZ ESTIMATES FOR THE MAGNETIC SCHRÖDINGER EQUATION 3 Ruiz and Vega [8]. We remark that our proof follows an approach different from those used in the previous works. Unfortunately, for the endpoint case, we need an additional condition that V L n. Although L n dose not contain the potentials of critical decay, it still includes those of almost critical decay V(x) φ( x x )min( x (+ǫ), x ( ǫ) ), φ L n (S n ). In case of dimension n = 3, we can find a specific bound for V, which plays the role of c n in Theorem.. We state this as the second result of the paper. Theorem.. If n = 3, A and V L 3/ < π /3, then estimate (.4) holds for all 3 r + = 3 and. To prove this, we use the best constant of the Stein-Tomas restriction theorem in R 3, obtained by Foschi [3], and apply it to an argument in Ruiz and Vega [8]. Next, we consider the general (magnetic) case that A or V can be different from zero. In this case, the Coulomb decay A(x) / x seems critical. (In [5], there is a counterexample for n 3. The case n = is still open.) In an early work of Stefanov [3], estimate (.) for n 3 was proved, that is, (.7) e ith f L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r,,h f L (R n ) for all Schrödinger admissible pairs (r, ) under some smallness assumptions on the potentials A and V. Later, for potentials of almost critical decay A(x) / x +ǫ and V(x) / x +ǫ ( x ), D Ancona, Fanelli, Vega and Visciglia [7] established (.7) for all Schrödinger admissible pairs (r,) in n 3, except the endpoint case (n,r,) = (3,6,), under some technical conditions on A and V. Also, there have been many related positive results; see, e.g., [7], [], [6], [4], [], [9] and [4]. Despite all these results, there has been no known positive result on the estimate in case of potentials A of critical decay even in the case V. Regarding the general case, we state the last result of the paper whose proof is provided in section 4. Theorem.3. Let n 3, A,V Cloc (Rn \{}) and ǫ >. Assume that the operator A = ( ia) and H = A +V are self-adjoint and positive on and that (.8) V K = sup x R n V (y) πn/ x y n dy < Γ( n ). Assume also that there is a constant C ǫ > such that A and V satisfy the almost critical decay condition (.9) A(x) + V(x) C ǫ min ( x ǫ, x +ǫ ), and the Coulomb gauge condition (.) A =. Lastly, for the trapping component of B as B τ (x) = (x/ x ) B(x), assume that (.) sup x =r x 3 B τ (x) dr+ sup x =r x ( r V(x) ) dr < + M if n = 3,
4 SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH for some M >, and that (.) x B τ (x) + x 3( r V(x) ) L + < (n )(n 3) if n 4. L 3 Only for n = 3, we also assume the boundness of the imagnary power of H: (.3) H iy BMO BMOH C(+ y ) 3/. Then we have (.4) e ith f L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r,,h,ǫ f L (R n ), n r + = n and. Note that this result covers the endpoint case (n,r,) = (3,6,); but the conclusions for the other cases are the same as in [7]. Here, V ± denote the positive and negative parts of V, respectively; that is, V + = max{v,} and V = max{ V,}. Also, we say that a function V is of Kato class if V K := sup x R n V(y) x y n dy <, and Γ in (.8) is the gamma function, defined by Γ(α) = x α e x dx. The last condition (.3) for n = 3 may seem a bit technical but not be artificial. For instance, by Lemma 6. in [8], we know that H iy L BMO H C( + y ) 3/ using only (.8). Also, there are many known sufficient conditions to extend such an estimate to BMO BMO, like the translation invariant operator (See [5]). For the definition and some basic properties of BMO H space, see section 3. The rest of the paper is organized as follows. In section, we prove Theorems. and.. An euivalence of norms regarding H and in R 3 is investigated in section 3. Lastly, in section 4, Theorem.3 is proved.. The case A : Proof of Theorem. and. In this section, the proof of Theorems. and. is provided. Let n 3, and consider the purely electric Schrödinger euation in R n+ : { i t u+ u = V(x)u, (x,t) R n R, (.) u(x,) = f(x), f S. By Duhamel s principle, we have a formal solution to problem (.) given by u(x,t) = e ith f(x) = e it f(x) i t e i(t s) V(x)e ish fds. From the standard Strichartz estimate (.3), there holds t e ith f L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C n,r, f (R n ) + e i(t s) V(x)e ish fds R L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) for all Schrödinger admissible pairs (r,). Thus it is enough to show that t (.) e i(t s) V(x)e ish fds C L n,r,,v f L (R n ). t (R;Lr x (Rn )) for all Schrödinger admissible pairs (r, ). By the duality argument, estimate (.) is euivalent to t e i(t s) ( V(x)e ish f ),G(,t) dsdt C f L (R n ) G L. t (R;Lr x (Rn )) x
STRICHARTZ ESTIMATES FOR THE MAGNETIC SCHRÖDINGER EQUATION 5 Now, we consider the left-hand side of this ineuality. Commuting the operator and integration, we have t e i(t s) ( V(x)e ish f ),G(,t) dsdt R = = R R t By Hölder s ineuality, we have V(x)e ish f, R x V(x)e ish f,e i(t s) G(,t) V(x)e ish f, e ish f x,s ( V ) s s x e i(t s) G(,t)dt e i(t s) G(,t)dt s x ds dsdt x ds. e i(t s) G(,t)dt. x,s ( V ) Thanks to [8, Theorem 3], for any n < p < n, we have (.3) e ith f x,t ( V ) C n V F p f (R n ) if condition (.5) holds for some suitable constant c n. More specifically, by Propositions.3 and 4. in [8], we have e ith f e it f t + x,t ( V ) e i(t s) V(x)e ish fds x,t ( V ) x,t ( V ) C V F p f +C V F pv(x)e ith f x,t ( V ) = C V F p f +C V F p e ith f x,t ( V ). Thus, if V F p /(C ) =: c n, we get e ith f x,t ( V ) C V F p f + eith f x,t ( V ), and this implies (.3) by setting C n = C. As a result, we can reduce (.) to (.4) e i(t s) G(,s)ds C n,r,,v G x,t ( V ) L t. t (R;Lr x (Rn )) It now remains to establish(.4). First, from[8, Proposition.3] and the duality of Keel-Tao s result (.3), we know e i(t s) e G(,s)ds = it e is G(,s)ds R x,t ( V ) R x,t ( V ) (.5) C n V F p e is G(,s)ds C n,r, V F p G L t Lr x for all Schrödinger admissible pair (r, ). In turn, (.5) implies t (.6) e i(t s) G(,s)ds C n,r, V F p G x,t ( V ) L R x t (R;Lr x (Rn ))
6 SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH by the Christ-Kiselev lemma [5] for >. Combining (.5) with (.6), we directly get (.4) for >. Next, for the endpoint case (r,) = ( n n,), we have (.7) t t e i(t s) G(,s)ds V e i(t s) G(,s)ds x,t ( V ) L n n x t (R;L n C n V L n x G n t (R;L n+ x (R n )) x (R n )) from Hölder s ineuality in x with the inhomogeneous Strichartz estimates by Keel- Tao. Observenowthat (.7) implies (.4) when = with the assumption V L n x. The proof of Theorem. is now complete. Now, we will find a suitable constant in Theorem.. For this, we refine estimate (.3) based on an argument in [8]. We recall the Fourier transform in R n, defined by f(ξ) = e ix ξ f(x)dx, R n and its basic properties f(x) = (π) n e ix ξ f(ξ)dξ and f (R n ) = f L R n (π) n (R n ). Thus, we can express e it f using the polar coordinates with r = λ as follows: e it f = (π) n e itr e ix ξ f(ξ)dσr (ξ)dr Take F as = (π) n e itλ S n r e ix ξ f(ξ)dσ λ (ξ)λ dλ. S n λ F(λ) = e ix ξ f(ξ)dσ λ (ξ)λ S n λ if λ and F(λ) = if λ <. Then, by Plancherel s theorem in t, we get e it f π ( ) = x,t ( V ) 4(π) n F(λ) dλ V(x) dx R n R π ( = (π) n e ix ξ f(ξ)dσ λ (ξ) ) λ dλ V(x) dx R n S n λ = π ( (π) n e ix ξ f(ξ)dσr (ξ) ) V(x) dx r dr. R n S n r Now, we consider the n = 3 case and apply the result on the best constant of the Stein-Tomas restriction theorem in R 3 obtained by Foschi [3]. That is, fdσ L4 (R 3 ) π f (S ) where fdσ(x) = e ix ξ f(ξ)dσ(ξ). S n Interpolating this with a trivial estimate fdσ L (R 3 ) f L (S ) 4π f (S ),
STRICHARTZ ESTIMATES FOR THE MAGNETIC SCHRÖDINGER EQUATION 7 we get fdσ L 6 (R 3 ) /6 (π) 5/6 f (S ). By Hölder s ineuality, we have ( e ix ξ f(ξ)dσ(ξ) ) V(x) dx e ix ξ f(ξ)dσ(ξ) R 3 S S L 6 V L 3/ So we get /3 (π) 5/3 V L 3/ f (S ). e it f x,t ( V ) π (π) 6/3 (π) 5/3 V L 3/ f = π /3 V L 3/ f. By the argument as in the proof of Theorem., we have e ith f x,t ( V ) e it f t x,t ( V ) + e i(t s) V(x)e ish fds = x,t ( V ) V f π /6 L 3/ + π /3 V L V(x)e ith f 3/ x,t ( V ) V f π /6 L 3/ + π /3 V L 3/ eith f x,t ( V ). Thus, if V L 3/ < π /3, then (.8) e ith f C x,t ( V ) V f. Using (.8) instead of (.3) in that argument, the proof of Theorem. is complete. 3. The euivalence of two norms involving H and in R 3 In this section, we investigate some conditions on H and p with which the euivalence H 4 f L p (R 3 ) C H,p ( ) 4 f Lp (R 3 ) holds. This euivalence was studied in [7] and [4] that are of independent interest. We now introduce such an euivalence in a form for n = 3, which enables us to include the endpoint estimate also for that dimension. Proposition 3.. Given A loc (R3 ;R 3 ) and V : R 3 R measurable, assume that the operators A = ( ia) and H = A +V are self-adjoint and positive on and that (.3) holds. Moreover, assume that V + is of Kato class and that A and V satisfy (.8) and ( (3.) A(x) ) + A(x) + V(x) C min x ǫ, x +ǫ for some < ǫ and C >. Then the following estimates hold: (3.) H 4 f L p C ǫ,p C ( ) 4 f L p, < p 6, (3.3) H 4 f L p C p ( ) 4 f L p, 4 3 < p < 4.
8 SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH In showing this, we only prove (3.) as estimate (3.3) is the same as [7, Theorem.]. When < p < 6, estimate (3.) easily follows from the Sobolev embedding theorem. However, in order to extend the range of p up to 6, we need a precise estimate which depends on ǫ in(3.). Towards this, we introduce a weighted Sobolev ineuality as below. Lemma 3.. (Theorem (B) in [9]). Suppose < α < n, < p < < and v (x) and v (x) are nonnegative measurable functions on R n. Let v (x) and v (x) p satisfy the reverse doubling condition: there exist δ,ǫ (,) such that v (x) ǫ v (x)dx for all cubes Q R n. δq Then the ineuality ( f(x) v (x)dx R n holds if and only if Q α n ( Qv (x)dx ) ( Q Q ) C ( R n ( ) α/ f(x) p v (x)dx ) p ) v (x) p p dx C for all cubes Q R n. From Lemma 3., we obtain a weighted estimate as follows. Lemma 3.3. Let f be a C (R3 ) function, and suppose that a nonnegative weight function w satisfies ( ) (3.4) w(x) min x ǫ, x +ǫ for some < ǫ. Then, for any < p 3, we have fw L p C ǫ,p f L p. Proof. For all < p < 3, we directly get (3.5) x f L p C x L 3 f, 3p C f L 3 p,p L p from Hölder s ineuality in Lorentz spaces and the Sobolev embedding theorem. For p = 3, by Hölder s ineuality, we get ( ) ( ) ( ) 3 f(x) w(x) dx f(x) w(x) ( θ) dx w(x) 3 3 θ 3 dx R 3 R 3 R3 for any 3 3 < < and < θ <. Taking θ =, we have ( ) f(x) 3 3 (R3 ) 3 w(x) dx Cǫ, f(x) w(x) 3 dx R 3 because of (3.4). Thus, using Lemma 3. with α =, (p,) = ( 3,), v (x) = w(x) 3 and v (x), we have ( ) (3.6) f(x) 3 3 (R3 ) 3 w(x) dx Cǫ, f(x) w(x) dx. R 3 Combining (3.5) and (3.6), the proof is complete.
STRICHARTZ ESTIMATES FOR THE MAGNETIC SCHRÖDINGER EQUATION 9 Finally, we prove Proposition 3.. We use Stein s interpolation theorem to the analytic family of operators T z = H z ( ) z, where H z and ( ) z are defined by the spectral theory. Denoting z = x+iy, we can decompose T z = T x+iy = H iy H x ( ) x ( ) iy. In fact, the operators H iy and ( ) iy are bounded according to the following result. Lemma 3.4. (Proposition. in [7]). Consider the self-adjoint and positive operators A and H = A +V on. Assume that A loc (R3 ;R 3 ) and that the positive and negative parts V ± of V satisfy: V + is of Kato class and V K < π3/ Γ(/). Then for all y R, the imaginary powers H iy satisfy the (,) weak type estimate H iy L L, C(+ y )3. Lemma 3.4 follows from the pointwise estimate for the heat kernel p t (x,y) of the operator e th as p t (x,y) (t) 3/ e x y π 3/ 8t. Γ(/) V K Regarding this estimate, one may refer to some references [3, 3, 4, 9]. By Lemma 3.4, we get (3.7) T iy f p C(+ y ) 3 f p for all < p <. Then by (.3), we have (3.8) T iy f BMOH := M # H( H iy ( ) iy f ) L C(+ y ) 3 ( ) iy f BMO C(+ y ) 3 f L, where M # Hf(x) := sup r> B(x, r) Next, consider the operator T +iy. If B(x,r) f(y) e r H f(y) dy <. (3.9) H( ) f L p C f L p for all < p 3, then by (3.7), we get (3.) T +iy f L p C f L p for all < p 3. Taking T z f := M # H( Tz f ) and applying (3.) with a basic property : (3.) M # H f L p C f Lp for all < p, we have (3.) T +iy f L p C f L p for all < p 3. So, applying Stein s interpolation theorem to (3.8) and (3.), we obtain T /4 f L p C f L p for all < p 6, Some properties of the BMOL space can be found in [].
SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH and using (3.) again, we have H /4 f L p C ( ) /4 f L p for all < p 6. Now, we handle the remaining part (3.9); that is, we wish to establish the estimate For a Schwartz function f, we can write Hf L p C f L p. (3.3) Hf = f +ia f +( A +i A+V)f. From Hölder s ineuality in Lorentz spaces and the Sobolev embedding theorem, we get A f L r C A L 3, f L 3r 3 r,r C A L 3, f L r for all < r < 3. On the other hand, applying Lemma 3.3 to (3.), we get ( A +i A+V)f L r CC f L r for all < r 3. Thus we have and this implies Proposition 3.. Hf L r C f L r for all < r 3, 4. Proof of Theorem.3 In this final section, we prove Theorem.3. This part follows an argument in [7]. Let u be a solution to problem (.) of the magnetic Schrödinger euation in R n+. By (3.3), we can expand H in (.): H = +ia + A +i A+V. Thus, by Duhamel s principle and the Coulomb gauge condition (.), we have a formal solution to (.) given by (4.) u(x,t) = e ith f(x) = e it f(x) i where t R(x, ) = ia A A +V. e i(t s) R(x, )e ish fds, From [7] and [] (see also (3.4) in [7]), it follows that for every admissible pair (r,), t (4.) e i(t s) F(,s)ds C n,r, j/ χ Cj F x,t, L t Lr x where C j = {x : j x j+ } and χ Cj is the characteristic function of the set C j. Then, from (4.), (.3) and (4.), we know ul e it f t t Lr x L + e i(t s) R(x, )e ish fds t Lr x L t Lr x C n,r, / f +C n,r, j/ χcj R(x, )e ith f. x x,t j Z j Z
STRICHARTZ ESTIMATES FOR THE MAGNETIC SCHRÖDINGER EQUATION For the second term in the far right-hand side, we get χ Cj R(x, )e ith f x,t χ Cj A A e ith ( f + χ Cj A + V ) e ith f. x,t x,t Next, we will use a known result in [6], which is a smoothing estimate for the magnetic Schrödinger euation. Lemma 4.. (Theorems.9 and. in [6]). Assume n 3, A and V satisfy conditions (.), (.) and (.). Then, for any solution u to (.) with f and A f, the following estimate holds: sup R> R x R C A ( A ) 4 f. A u dxdt + sup R> R From (.9) with Lemma 4., we have j/ χcj A A e ith f j Z j Z j( sup x C j A ( j Z )( x,t j+ )( j sup A sup x C j R> R x R x =R u dσ(x)dt ) A u dxdt x j+ ) A u dxdt C A,ǫ ( A ) 4 f L x and j/ χcj ( A + V ) e ith f j Z j Z x,t r j j Z j/( ( sup A + V ))( j+ x C j ( j ( sup A + V ))( sup x C j R> R C A,V,ǫ ( A ) 4 f L x. ) r u dσ r (x)dtdr x =r x =R u dσ R (x)dt That is, e ith f L C n,r, / f t Lr x +C ( A n,r,,a,v,ǫ ) 4 f. x x First, consider the case n = 3. By (.9), estimate (3.) in Proposition 3. holds for all < p 6. (Here, H = A +V.) Then by (3.3) in Proposition 3., we get H 4 e ith f L t (R;Lr x (R3 )) C e ith f L t (R;Lr x (R3 )) (4.3) ) C f L x (R 3 ) +C ( A ) 4 f L x (R 3 ) C H 4 f L x (R 3 )
SEONGHAK KIM AND YOUNGWOO KOH for all admissible pairs (r, ). (It clearly includes the endpoint case (n, r, ) = (3,6,).) Next, for the case n 4, we already know that (3.) holds for < p < n and that (3.3) is valid for 4 3 < p < 4 under the same conditions on A and V (see [7, Theorem.]). Thus we can easily get the same bound as (4.3) for all admissible pairs (r, ). Since the operators H 4 and e ith commutes, we get e ith f L t (R;Lr x (Rn )) C f x (R n ) from (4.3), and this completes the proof. Acknowledgment Y.
