1 Contents Page Focus 2 Listening Ordinal numbers Details Children listen to the story and number the animals according to their appearance in the sequence. Children then write the names of the animals in the sentences below. Reading out the sentences gives them an introduction to the ordinal numbers. Children can move on to matching numbers to words. An example has been done for them. They are able to use the previous exercise to help them answer this exercise. 3 Spelling Children write out the animal vocabulary correctly, using jumbled letters to help them, in context. 4 Spelling Vocabulary 5-6 Spelling Word recognition Children complete the crossword using the pictures as clues, practising their vocabulary and spelling. *Font used is not a primary font; i.e. the letter is represented as a, exposing children to different fonts. Higher level: Children write the correct words next to the pictures, then find the words in the wordsearch. 7-8 Vocabulary Categorisation Lower level: Children find the words in the wordsearch. First one done as an example to help. Children need to be able to recognise both upper-case and lower-case letters, and to match them. Children match words to pictures, then categorise the animals into land/sea animals. A final question asks fast finishers to list the animals that they have personally seen, practising the use of indefinite articles. Children match words to pictures, as in the first worksheet, then categorise the animals into number of legs. A final task for fast finishers is to write sentences, based on a substitution table. 9 Constructive reading skills Children answer some questions about the book, and draw a picture of themselves reading the book. With EFL learners, you can adapt this to a class activity, answering each question together as a class on the board, then writing individually. You could also use L1 if that suits your class better in my opinion, it s more important for them to express themselves about the book than to understand the meta-language. When drawing themselves, encourage them to show their feelings e.g. if they found the book funny, they should draw themselves laughing aloud; if they cried during the book, they should show tears, etc...

2 : : 1. Listen to the story. Number the animals as you see them in the story. Number 1 has been done for you Now complete the sentences. The bad-tempered ladybird flew away from the leaf. 1. At five o clock, it saw a l e e h n t p a _, but it was not big enough to fight. At five fifteen, it saw a flipper. At five h e l w a thirty it saw a fin. At quarter to six, it saw a big, which gave the badtempered ladybird such a slap that it flew all the way back to the leaf, where the l i t a friendly ladybird was still eating. The ladybirds shared the aphids, and then they went to sleep.
