When the two bands have opposite parity and are quarter filled we prove that the ground state is simultaneously ferromagnetic and ferroelectric for infinite intra-orbital Coulomb interactions and. We also show that this coexistence leads to a singular magnetoelectric effect. PACS numbers: a d e Introduction. The interplay between order parameters of different nature opens the door for designing new multifunctional devices whose properties can be manipulated with more than one physical field. For instance the spin and orbital electronic degrees of freedom can order individually or simultaneously producing different phases. In particular orbital ordering can produce symmetry-breaking states like orbital magnetism ferroelectricity (FE) quadrupolar electric or magnetic ordering and other multipolar orderings. The magnetoelectric multiferroics such as R(FeMn)O 3 [ ] and RMn O 5 [6 7] are real examples of materials that combine distinct useful properties within a single system. Recent studies of these multiferroic materials have revived interest in the magnetoelectric effect i.e. the induction of polariation with an applied magnetic field and magnetiation with an applied electric field. To date materials that exhibit both ferromagnetism () and FE are rare [8] because the transition metal ion of typical perovskite ferroelectrics is in a nonmagnetic d 0 electronic configuration. Therefore it is essential to explore alternative routes to the coexistence of the and FE [8 9 10]. Different mechanisms for FE involving electronic degrees of freedom have been proposed. There are those in which FE results from bond ordered states induced either by electronphonon coupling (Peierls instability) [11] or by pure electronelectron Coulomb interactions [1]. In these cases the ferroelectric state is clearly nonmagnetic due to the singlet nature of the covalent bonds. In contrast considering a system of interacting spinless fermions with two atomic orbitals of opposite inversion symmetry (say the d and f orbitals) Portengen et al. [13] predicted that permanent electric dipoles are induced by spontaneous d f hybridiation when particlehole pairs (excitons) undergo a Bose-Einstein condensation. This result was confirmed in the strong coupling limit of an extended Falicov-Kimball spinless fermion model where both bands are dispersive [14]. It was also confirmed numerically in the intermediate coupling regime by using a constrained path Monte Carlo approach [15]. The critical question that emerges is: How do FE and magnetism interplay when real electrons instead of spinless fermions are considered? In this Letter we answer this question proving that the mechanism proposed by Portengen et al. [13] can coexist with magnetically ordered states. In this case the single electron occupying the effective (say d f hybridied) orbital simultaneously provides an electric and a magnetic dipole moment and the Coulomb repulsion is sufficient to generate a strong coupling between both of them. We start from a two-band Hubbard Hamiltonian that includes an inter-orbital on-site repulsive interaction. Like in the spinless fermion case this interaction provides the glue for the formation of excitons. At quarter filling and in the strong coupling limit we map the low energy spectrum of the two-band Hubbard model H into an effective spinpseudospin Hamiltonian H eff where the pseudospin represents the orbital degree of freedom. We prove that in the limit of large intra-orbital repulsive interactions H eff has a ferromagnetic ground state that can be partially or fully saturated. By combining this result with the previous analysis for spinless fermions [ ] we show that and FE coexist and a divergent magnetoelectric is demonstrated using the SO(4) symmetry of H. Our conclusions are reinforced by a semi-classical and a numerical computation of the ero temperature (T = 0) phase diagram of H that goes beyond the limiting case. Hamiltonian. We consider a two-band Hubbard model with a local inter-band Coulomb interaction on a D- dimensional hypercubic lattice [17]: H = t νν (f iνσ f i+ê ην σ +f i+ê ην σ f iνσ) + i iηνν σ n a in b i + iν U νν n ν i n ν i + iν ǫ ν n ν i (1) where η = {xy...} ν = {ab} n ν iσ = f iνσ f iνσ n ν i = σ nν iσ and n i = ν nν i. Since the two orbitals a and b have opposite parity under spatial inversion the interband hybridiation term must be odd under this operation: t ab = t ba. In addition the intra-band hoppings t aa and t bb will have opposite signs in general. The local spin and pseudospin operators are given by the expressions: s µ iν = 1 f iνα σµ αα f iνα τµ iσ = 1 f iνσ σµ νν f iν σ αα νν () where σ µ are the Pauli matrices with µ = {xy}. The total spin and pseudospin per site are: s µ i = ν sµ iν and 1
2 LA-UR February 018 submitted to Physical Review Letters τ µ i = σ τµ iσ. The pseudospin componentτ x is proportional to the on-site hybridiation. Since the the orbitals a and b have opposite parity the local electric dipole moment isp i = µτ x i where µ is the dipole matrix element between the a and b orbitals [14 15]. Symmetry is a useful concept for describing the coexistence of different order parameters.[18] Fort aa = ±t bb t ab = t ba = 0ǫ a / = ǫ b / and = = H is invariant under a U(1) SU(4) symmetry group. The U(1) symmetry corresponds to the conservation of the total number of particles. The generators of the SU(4) symmetry group are the three components of the total spin s µ T = i sµ i and pseudospinτ µ T = i τµ i plus the nine operators: π µµ = 1 f iνα σµ νν σµ αα f iν α. (3) iανα ν The total spin is conserved for any set of parameters. If we just impose the condition t ab = t ba = 0 the symmetry group of H is reduced to the the subgroup U(1) U(1) SO(4). The six generators of the SO(4) group are the three components of total spins µ T and the three operatorsπµ. This symmetry arises from separate total spin and charge conservation of each band as the two bands are only coupled by the Coulomb interaction. The symmetry operatorss µ T ±πµ are the generators of global spin rotations on each individual band (with the + sign for theaband and the sign for the b band). Strong Coupling Limit. We will consider from now on the quarter filled case n a +n b = 1 wheren a and n b are the particle densities of the bands a and b. When t νν the low energy spectrum ofh can be mapped to an effective spin-pseudospin Hamiltonian by means of a canonical transformation that eliminates the linear terms int νν : H eff = iη + iη + iη [ µ J µ τ µ i τµ i+e η +J x (τ i τx i+e η τ x i τ i+e η )]H H iη [ J 0 +J 1(τ i +τ i+e η ) J (τ x i τ x i+e η )](H H iη 1 ) [J τ i τ i+e η +J x(τ i τ x i+e η τ x i τ i+e η )]+ i B τ i whereh H iη = s i s i+eη and J = 4(t bb t ab ) + 4(t aa t ab ) J x = 8(t bbt aa t ab ) J y = 8(t bbt aa +t ab ) J x = 4t ab [ (t aa +t bb ) J 0 = (t bb +t ab ) J = t ab [ (t aa t bb ) t aa t bb ] + (t aa +t ab ) J = (t aa +t bb t ab ) J x = t ab[ (t aa +t bb ) + t aa t bb ] J J 1 = t bb t aa + t aa + t bb ] (4) and B = ǫ a ǫ b + ( )/. In this limit because the double-occupancy is forbidden in the low energy Hilbert space of H eff both s i and τ i belong to the S = 1/ representation of the su() algebra. The first two terms of H eff couple the spin and the orbital degrees of freedom. As usual the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interactionhiη H is a direct consequence of the Pauli exclusion principle. On the other hand the anisotropic Heisenberg-like pseudospin-pseudospin interaction reflects the competition between an excitonic crystalliation or staggered orbital ordering (SOO) induced by the Ising term and a Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons induced by the XY -term [14 16]. The first term ofh eff shows explicitly that the amplitude of the excitonic kinetic energy (or XY -pseudospin) term gets maximied when the excitons are in a fully polaried ferromagnetic spin state. However antiferromagnetism (AF) is clearly favored by the second term. Large limit. We will first prove that there are partially and fully polaried ferromagnetic ground states of H eff in the limit of and t ab = 0 and that the total spin or magnetiation s T take the values τt s T N/. After proving this result we will show that these ferromagnetic solutions are also ferroelectric for B c1 B < B c and using the SO(4) symmetry we will derive an exact expression for ground state electric polariation as a function of the magnetiation. SinceJ 0 andj 1 vanish in this limit H eff is reduced to: H eff = ij [J τ i τ j +J (τi x τx j +τ y i τy j )HH ij ]+B τi where the angular brackets indicate that the sum is over nearest-neighbors J = J x = J y and Hij H = s i s j To prove our statement we will use a basis of eigenstates of the local operatorsτi and s i : { τ 1...τ N s 1...s N } where N is the total number of sites. The off-diagonal matrix elements of H eff s N...s 1 τ N...τ 1 H eff τ1...τ N s 1...s N = J τ N...τ 1 Hxy ij τ 1...τ N s N...s 1 HH ij s 1...s N (5) ij i
3 LA-UR February 018 submitted to Physical Review Letters are non-positive because J < 0 and the matrix elements of H xy ij = τx i τx j +τy i τy j andhh ij are explicitly non-negative. According to the generalied Perron s theorem (see for instance Ref. [19]) there is one ground state of H eff Ψ g = τ1...τ N a {τ }{s } s 1...s N (6) {τ } {s s T =0} such that all the amplitudesa {τ }{s } are non-negative ({τ } and{s } denote all the possible configurations ofτi ands i ). We can rewrite Ψ g s T =0 in the following way: Ψ g = b {τ } τ1...τ N Φ{τ } (7) {τ } with Φ{τ 1 } = a {τ b }{s } s 1...s N {τ } {s s T =0} b {τ } = a {τ }{s }. (8) {s s T =0} The set {τ } corresponds to all the configurations of the τi variables such that b {τ } > 0. Note that each spin state Φ{τ } is normalied and i b {τ } = 1 because Ψg is also normalied. The ground state energy of H eff is : Ψ g H eff Ψ g = Ψ g J τi τj +B τi Ψ g + ij i J b {τ }b {τ } τ N...τ 1 Hxy ij τ 1...τ N ij {τ τ } Φ{τ } H H ij Φ{τ }. (9) Hij H is a bounded operator with eigenvalues±1/. Therefore Φ{τ } Hij H Φ{τ } 1/ and the equality holds for any pair of nearest-neighbor sites (ij) if Φ{τ } = s T s T = N/ where s T s T = N/ is the state with maximum total spin (fully polaried) and i s i = s T. Hence expression (9) is minimied for the fully polaried spin configuration which means that there is family of ground states Ψ g that have maximum total spins T and different values ofs T : Ψ g = b {τ } τ1...τ N s Ts T = N/. (10) {τ } H eff This proves that there is a fully polaried ferromagnetic ground state of H eff. Note the proof is valid in any dimension and is also valid for non-bipartite lattices. When we restrict H eff to the subspace with maximum total spin (s T = N/) the operator (S i S j ) is replaced by 1/ and the restricted Hamiltonian becomes exactly the same as the one obtained in Ref. [14] for the strong coupling limit of a spinless extended Falicov-Kimball model [0]. As shown in Ref. [14 16] the quantum phase diagram of H eff contains a ferroelectric phase for B c1 B < B c i.e. for a non-ero value ofτt. The SO(4) symmetry of H eff implies that the ground state degeneracy is higher than the s T + 1 = N + 1 multiplet obtained from the global SU() spin rotations. Ground states with different total spin can also be obtained by making different global spin rotations for the bandsa andb. The spins of each individual band will remain fully polaried under these transformations but the relative orientation between spins of different bands will change. In particular the minimum total spin will occur when spins in different bands are antialigned i.e. s T = τt. This implies that the total spin of the ground state can take the values: τt s T N/. Band b - y Banda y p µp o m min m max 0 m FIG. 1: Evolution of the magnetiation (arrows) on each band under the SO(4) transformation U(φ). The P vs m plot shows the change of the electric dipole moment when the total magnetiation evolves from the minimum value obtained for φ = π/ to the maximum value m(φ = 0) = 1/. To derive the magneto-electric effect we define χ as the fully polaried ferromagnetic and ferroelectric state obtained for B c1 B < B c. Then the average magnetiation and electric dipole moment per site m andp are given by: χ s m = T χ = 1 1+ N N p = µp 0 (11) where p o = χ τt x χ /N. A given ground state in the SO(4) multiplet can expressed as g u = U χ where U is an element of the SO(4) group. In particular choosing the set of transformations U(φ) = e iφ j (Sx ja Sx jb ) we get for p(φ) = µ g u(φ) τt x g u(φ) /N andm(φ) = g u(φ) s T g u(φ) /N: m(φ) = = 1 1 4n a n b sin φ+ N p(φ) = µp o cosφ (1) where we have used thats T = s at +s bt and thatu(φ) rotates the vectorss at ands bt around thex-axis by anglesφ and φ respectively. For the second relation we have used that: U (φ)τ x TU (φ) = cosφ τ x T sinφ π yx (13) and χ π yx χ = 0. For φ = π/ the magnetiation of the a and b bands have opposite sign (see Fig.1) and the total magnetiation per site is minimied: m min = m(π/) = n a n b / (we have taken the thermodynamic limitn ). The 3
4 LA-UR February 018 submitted to Physical Review Letters electric polariation can be expressed as a function of m by combining Eqs. (1): m m min p = µp 0. (14) 1 4m min The electric dipole moment is ero for m = m min and it increases as m m min implying that the derivatived P /dm diverges at m = m min as 1/ m m min. This important result shows that the interplay between the spin and the orbital degrees of freedom can produce an enormous magnetoelectric effect (see Fig. 1). H /J 0 H /J SOO SOO FE FE AF 0. SOO FE SL AF AF B /J 0 FIG. : Zero temperature phase diagram of the two dimensional version of H eff plus a Zeeman term H s T computed in the spin-wave approximation (top) and by exact diagonaliation of a 4 4 cluster (bottom). The parameter values are J 0 = 0.J 0 J x = J y = 1.6J 0 J 1 = 0.1J 0 and J 0 = J +J /. It is important to verify the stability of the coexisting ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases away from the limit we have considered above. For this purpose we computed the T = 0 diagram of the two dimensional version of H eff plus a Zeeman term H s T in a spin-wave approximation (top of Fig. ) and by exact diagonaliation of a4 4 cluster (bottom of Fig. ). In this case the values of of and are finite (J 0 = 0.J 0 ) and the coexistence of and FE obtained for H = 0 and B c1 B < B c is still present (see Fig. ). For B < B c1 and H = 0 the spin-wave phase diagram exhibits coexistence of and SOO [14]. The ordering is replaced by a spin liquid (short ranged spin-spin correlations) in the phase diagram computed by exact diagonaliation indicating that quantum fluctuations play a major role in that regime of parameters. As expected for large enough B the system becomes an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator (one band is a half-filled and the other one is empty). The exact diagonaliation shows again that quantum fluctuations generate an intermediate phase between the FE- state and the Mott insulator in which FE and A coexist (see bottom of Fig. ). For high values of H the system is fully polaried and the both T = 0 phase diagrams coincide with the one obtained in Ref. [14]. The ferromagnetic state can be further stabilied by the inclusion of the ferromagnetic on-site inter-orbital exchange interaction. For example the intra-atomic 4f 5d exchange interaction is about 0. ev in EuB 6 [3 4]. The other important aspect to consider is the role of a finite inter-band hybridiation t ab. Exact diagonaliation results [] show that the lowest total spin ground state s T = τ T or m = m min is the one stabilied after the inclusion of a small t ab term. According to Eq.(14) this unsaturated ferromagntic state gives rise to a divergent magnetoelectric effect. In this situation a small increase in the magnetiation produced by an applied magnetic field will generate a large increase of the electric dipole moment in the way depicted in Fig. 1. In summary we have shown that the electron-electron Coulomb interaction can produce coexisting and FE. Both phases arise simultaneously from the condensation of excitons or particle-hole pairs that exist in two bands with opposite parity under spatial inversion. The coexistence requires the presence of large intra-orbital Coulomb interactions to reduce the strength of the antiferromagnetic interaction. We have also shown that the coexistence of FE and leads to a divergent magnetoelectric effect. In the proximity of the ferroelectricferromagnetic instability a small magnetic field can produce an enormous change in the electric polariation. We thank W. E. Pickett and J.
