1 EXISTENCE OF SPECIAL PRIMARY DECOMPOSITIONS IN MULTIGRADED MODULES arxiv: v1 [math.ac] 19 Sep 214 DIPANKAR GHOSH Abstract. Let R = n N t Rn be a commutative Noetherian Nt -graded ring, and L = n N t Ln be a finitely generated Nt -graded R-module. We prove that there exists a positive integer k such that for any n N t with L n, there exists a primary decomposition of the zero submodule O n of L n such that for any P Ass R L n), the P-primary component Q in that primary decomposition contains P k L n. We also give an example which shows that not all primary decompositions of O n in L n have this property. As an application of our result, we prove that there exists a fixed positive integer l such that the th local cohomology H I Ln) = : Ln I l) for all ideals I of R and for all n N t. 1. Introduction Let A be a commutative Noetherian ring with unity, and let N M be two finitely generated A-modules. Let N = Q 1 Q 2 Q r be an irredundant and minimal primary decomposition of N in M, where Q i is a P i -primary submodule of M, i.e., Ass A M/Q i ) = {P i } for all i = 1,2,...,r. We call Q i as a P i -primary component of N in M. In this case, we have Ass A M/N) = {P 1,P 2,...,P r }. Note that Ann A M/Q i ) = P i, and hence there exists some positive integer s i such that P si i M Q i for each i = 1,2,...,r. From now onwards, by a primary decomposition, we always mean an irredundant and minimal primary decomposition unless explicitly stated otherwise. Throughout thisarticle, wedenoter = n N R t n asacommutativenoetherian N t -gradedring with unity where N is the collection of all non-negative integers and t is any fixed positive integer) and L = n N L t n as a finitely generated N t -graded R-module unless explicitly stated otherwise. Set A = R,...,). Note that A is a Noetherian ring, and each L n is a finitely generated A-module. We denote O n as the zero submodule of L n for each n N t. For each n N t, fix a primary decomposition ) O n = Q n,1 Q n,2 Q n,rn of O n in L n, where Q n,i is a P n,i -primary component of O n in L n. Then there exists a positive integer s i n) such that P sin) n,i L n Q n,i for each n N t and i = 1,2,...,r n. A natural question arisesthat can we chooseaprimary decomposition ) of each O n for which we have s i n) bounded irrespective of i and n?. 21 Mathematics Subject Classification. 2 2 DIPANKAR GHOSH In this article, we see that there exists some primary decomposition ) of each O n forwhichwecanchooses i n)insuchawaythatitisboundedseetheorem2.4). This confirms a conjecture by Tony J. Puthenpurakal. In an example, we also show that not all primary decompositions of O n have this property see Example 2.5). Application. Suppose I is an ideal of A, and M is an A-module. Recall that the th local cohomology module HI M) of M with respect to I is defined to be H IM) := { x M I n x = for some n N } = n N : M I n ). If M is a Noetherian A-module, then it is easy to see that H I M) = : M I e) for some e N, where e depends on M as well as I. If L = n N t L n is a finitely generated N t -graded R-module, then as an application of our main result on primary decomposition, we prove that there exists a fixed positive integer l such that H I L n) = : Ln I l) for all ideals I of R and for all n N t see Theorem 3.1). 2. Main result To prove our main result Theorem 2.4), we need some preliminaries. We start with the following lemma. Lemma 2.1. Let R = n N t R n be a Noetherian N t -graded ring, and L = n N t L n be a finitely generated N t -graded R-module. Set A = R,...,). Let J be an ideal of A. Then there exists a positive integer k such that J m JL n ) = O n n N t and m k. Proof. Let I = JR be the ideal of R generated by J. Since R is Noetherian and L is a finitely generated R-module, then by Artin-Rees lemma, there exists a positive integer c such that 2.1.1) I m L) H I L) = Im c I c L) H I L)) for all m c I m c H I L)) for all m c. Now consider the ascending chain of submodules of L: : L I) : L I 2) : L I 3). Since L is a Noetherian R-module, there exists some l such that 2.1.2) :L I l) = : L I l+1) = = HI L). Set k := c+l. Then from 2.1.1) and 2.1.2), for all m k, we have I m L) H I L) Im c : L I m c) =, which gives J m J L n) = O n for all n N t and for all m k. An immediate corollary is the following. Corollary 2.2. Let R = n N t R n be a Noetherian N t -graded ring, and L = n N t L n be a finitely generated N t -graded R-module. Set A = R,...,). Then there exists a positive integer k such that for any P n N t Ass AL n ), we have P k P L n) = O n n N t.

3 SPECIAL PRIMARY DECOMPOSITIONS IN MULTIGRADED MODULES 3 Proof. By [4, Lemma 3.2], we may assume that Ass A L n ) = {P 1,P 2,...,P l }. n N t From Lemma 2.1, for each P i 1 i l), there exists some k i such that P m i P i L n ) = O n n N t and m k i. Now the corollary follows by taking k := max{k i : 1 i l}. Let us recall the following result from [3, Theorem 1.1]. Theorem 2.3. Let A be a Noetherian ring, and N M be two finitely generated A- modules such that Ass A M/N) = {P 1,...,P r }. Let Q i be a P i -primary component of N in M for each 1 i r. Then N = Q 1 Q r, which is necessarily an irredundant and minimal primary decomposition of N in M. We are now in a position to prove our main result. Theorem 2.4. Let R = n N t R n be a Noetherian N t -graded ring, and L = n N t L n be a finitely generated N t -graded R-module. Set A = R,...,). Then there exists a positive integer k such that for each n N t with L n, there exists a primary decomposition of the zero submodule O n of L n : O n = Q n,1 Q n,2 Q n,rn, where Q n,i is a P n,i -primary component of O n in L n satisfying P k n,i L n Q n,i n N t and i = 1,2,...,r n. Proof. Let k be as in Corollary 2.2. Fix n N t such that L n. By Theorem 2.3, it is enough to prove that for each P Ass A L n ), there exists a P-primary component Q ofo n in L n such that P k L n Q. So fix P Ass A L n ). FromCorollary2.2, we have 2.4.1) P k PL n ) = O n. It iseasyto see that P k L n L n for instanceby localizationat P). IfH P L n) = L n, then 2.4.1) gives P k L n = O n, hence any P-primary component of O n in L n contains P k L n, and hence we are through. Therefore we may as well assume that H P L n) L n. Now we fix irredundant and minimal primary decompositions 2.4.2) P k L n = Q 1 Q u and H P L n) = Q u+1 Q v of P k L n and H P L n) in L n respectively. We claim that P / Ass A Ln /H P L n) ). Otherwise P = Ann A m) for some m L n H P L n). But then Pm H P L n) implies that P j Pm) = in L n for some j N, i.e., m H P L n), which is a contradiction. Therefore P / Ass A Ln /H P L n) ). From 2.4.1), it can be noted that P Ass A L n ) Ass A Ln /P k L n ) AssA Ln /H PL n ) ). Since P / Ass A Ln /H P L n) ), we have P Ass A Ln /P k L n ), and hence without loss of generality, we may assume that Q := Q 1 is a P-primary submodule of L n. Now considering 2.4.1) and 2.4.2), we have a primary decomposition O n = Q 1 Q u Q u+1 Q v,

4 4 DIPANKAR GHOSH which need not be irredundant or minimal, but we get the desired P-primary component Q = Q 1 of O n in L n such that P k L n Q. Now we give an example not all primary decompositions have s i n) bounded. Example 2.5. [2, page 299] Let K be a field. Set A := K[X,Y] as the polynomial ring in two variables X,Y over K. Let I = X 2,XY). Set R := A[Z] and L := A/I[Z] with natural N-grading structures, where Z is an indeterminate. Here for each n N, L n = A/I)Z n = A/I as A-modules. For each O n zero submodule of L n ), fix the primary decomposition O n = x 2,xy) = x) x 2,xy,y n+1 ) = Q n,1 Q n,2 say), where x,y are the images of X,Y in A/I respectively. Here Q n,1 = x) is a X)- primary and Q n,2 = x 2,xy,y n+1 ) is a X,Y)-primary submodules of L n. For n 1, the minimal s 2 n) we can choose so that is n+1), which is unbounded. X,Y) s2n) L n = x,y) s2n) Q n,2 = x 2,xy,y n+1 ) 3. An application As a consequence of the Theorem 2.4, we prove the following resulttheorem 3.1) which says that for any ideal I of A and for any n N t, the th local cohomology module H I L n) = : Ln I k), where k is a fixed positive integer as occurring in Theorem 2.4. Theorem 3.1. Let R = n N t R n be a Noetherian N t -graded ring, and L = n N t L n be a finitely generated N t -graded R-module. Set A = R,...,). Then there exists a positive integer l such that for any ideal I of A, we have H IL n ) = : Ln I l) n N t. Proof. By virtue of the Theorem 2.4, there exists a positive integer l such that for each n N t with L n, we fix a primary decomposition of the zero submodule O n of L n : 3.1.1) O n = Q n,1 Q n,2 Q n,rn, where Q n,i is a P n,i -primary component of O n in L n satisfying 3.1.2) P l n,il n Q n,i n N t and i = 1,2,...,r n. We claim that the theorem holds true for this l. Let I be an arbitraryideal of A. Fix an arbitraryn N t. If L n =, then there is nothingtoprove. SowemayaswellassumethatL n. By[1,Proposition3.13a.], from 3.1.1), we have 3.1.3) H I L n) = { Qn,i I Pn,i,1 i r n }. Then by using 3.1.3), 3.1.2) and 3.1.1) serially, we have I l ) I L n ) { Pn,i l L }) { } ) n I P n,i, 1 i r n Qn,i I P n,i, 1 i r n { } ) { } ) Qn,i I Pn,i, 1 i r n Qn,i I Pn,i, 1 i r n = Q n,1 Q n,2 Q n,rn = O n.

5 SPECIAL PRIMARY DECOMPOSITIONS IN MULTIGRADED MODULES 5 Thus for any ideal I of A, we have 3.1.4) I l ) I L n ) = n N t. Let x HI L n). Then I l x I l ) I L n ) =, and hence x : Ln I l). Thus for any ideal I of A, we have HI L n) = : Ln I l) n N t, which completes the proof of the theorem. Acknowledgements I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Tony J. Puthenpurakal, for his generous guidance and valuable suggestions concerning this article. I would also like to thank NBHM, DAE, Govt. of India for providing financial support for this study.
