12 Chapter 1 Introduction The quality of your thesis reflects the quality of your research work. If your thesis is incomplete in any manner, it means your research work is incomplete. Please make every possible efforts to make your thesis professional. It will pay you back in near future. 1.1 About This Template I started writing this in two folds. First, I d like to explain a standard method of writing thesis here so that I do not have to repeat correcting same mistakes that my students make every year. Second, over the years, I realized that we are producing somewhat different format of theses year by year so realized that we need a standard template to be used. This template is made aiming for two objects. There is a very loose requirements from Korea University (KU) Graduate School about the textual format of the thesis. This rule is applied in this template. Second, I tried to minimize all the modern methods of making the LaTeX output fancy but stick with 1

13 the classical (as far as I think) appearence. You are free to use modern methods to make the apparence of your thesis fancier but you should not alter the textual format that KU requires. This template will be updated periodically based on as I learn new information and also from the feekback from the users, you. Please feel free to suggest if you think changes are on demand. 1. How To Write Introduction Introduction must contains underlying physics of your thesis topic from the scratch. One has to start from the basic knowledge to the latest information. When you do so, please includes your original references proper manner. We will discuss how to make proper references later. 1.3 Outline of Dissertation The first chapter of your thesis should end with the outline of dissertation. One has to discuss how your later chapters are organized. An example is In Chapter, we describe the Tevatron collider and the D0 detector. Particle identification is discussed in Chapter 3, and selection of data samples used in our search in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 is devoted to the techniques used to distinguish a signal for t t production in the all-jets channel from backgrounds. In Chapter 6, techniques used to extract the mass of the top quark are presented. Conclusions are drawn in Chapter 7.

14 Chapter Contents.1 Figures When you insert a figure and describe it in the text, there are common mistakes usually made and I am listing them below. Figure itself It is common that labels of x and/or y axes are not shown, sometimes missing physical dimensions, and fonts are too small to read. Please make sure that you produce a figure that is readable to non-experts yet looking professional. Figure/Table Caption For beginners, it is common practice that the description of the figure which we call caption, is too short, or do not explain what is drawn in the figure. The caption should describe what is drawn in detail but no redundent information is provided. An example of such is shown in Fig..1. Note 3

[1]. Referring Figures When you refer figures from the context, there are two things you have to know. If it is located in the biginning of a sentense, wirte the full word such as Figure [1] shows the distribution of.... If it is not located in the beginning, write as The mass distributions are shown in Fig. [1]. Note that there is one space allocated between the word Figure (or Fig.) and the figure number. This convention is adapted at least in journals such as Physical Review Letters and Physical Review D that we submit all the time so be aware of it. 4

16 . Equations For equations I would like to point out two common mistakes below. Range First, when you write the equation, it has to be within the space that is spanned by the text. If you see the below Eq. (.1), KS 0 = 1 ( ) (1+ǫ) K 0 (1 ǫ) K 0 (1+ ǫ ) 1 [( ) ( )] = K 0 K 0 +ǫ K 0 + K 0 1 ( = K 0 1 +ǫ K(.1) ) 0 (1+ ǫ ) (1+ ǫ ) it is too long and ugly. It has to be like KS 0 = 1 ( ) (1+ǫ) K 0 (1 ǫ) K 0 (1+ ǫ ) 1 [( ) ( )] = K 0 K 0 +ǫ K 0 + K 0 (1+ ǫ ) = 1 (1+ ǫ )( K 0 1 +ǫ K 0 ), (.) and now it is looking much better. Referring Equations When you refer an equation, it is common to use a pair of paranthesis, such as...are derived as in Eq. (.).. Note also that if it appears in the beginning of the sentense, the full word has to appear: Equation (.) describes.... Again, beware of one space between the word and the number. Symbols in Equations 5

17 In Eq. (.), we have undefined symbols such as K 0 S, ǫ, K0, K0, K 0 1, and K0. In the place where any new symbols are introduced for the first time in your thesis, you have to define what they are, even for the speed of light c..3 References Writing References The best way to learn how to write references is to learn how Physical Review Letters deal with references. Depending on the type(journal, book, proceeding and so on), the method varies so please make sure that you understand how it is done for each case. Referring References When you point a reference (or multiple of them) in the contect, it usually appear at the end, although it does not have to be. An example would be... has been studied before [1]. Note that there is a space before the number, and the period comes at the end. Sometimes formats such as.. with the best present limits from Ref. [1]. 6

18 Chapter 3 Conclusions 3.1 Appendix You may have appendix (or appendices) to include technical details, usually. 3. Last Words I repeat what I said in the beginning. The quality of your thesis reflects the quality of your research work. If your thesis is incomplete in any manner, it means your research work is incomplete.
