O Brien jobrien.cec@gmail.com website: j/ classroom: Physics Lab #2 In science there is only physics, all the rest is stamp collecting. - Ernest Rutherford IB Evaluation: Lab/Practical Work 24%, Final Exam 76% Texts: Tsokos, Physics for the IB Diploma (Cambridge Learning, 2008) Giancoli, Physics: Principles with Applications (Pearson Education, 2005) Program Overview This class continues the material presented in IB Physics Year One and is based on the IB Physics Curriculum. We will cover topics listed on the attached syllabus taken from the IB Physics Curriculum Document. The goals of this course are to: develop students understanding of the principals and laws of physics as they apply to the world around them. prepare students for careers that require a background in physics. develop in students an understanding of technological, historical, and societal implications of physics. develop in students a respect for and appreciation of physics. Expectations: The IB Physics Year Two course will emphasize practical work and problem solving. Students will be expected to incorporate skills and information learned from other disciplines such as mathematics, arts, and English to show that problem solving in physics does not isolate itself from other disciplines. You will be expected to: work both cooperatively and individually in the lab. acquire, synthesize, and interpret results in lab or mathematical situations. read scientific literature and express the ideas in everyday language. regularly complete assigned homework and practise problems from various textbooks and worksheets. be prepared and on time for class each day. i

2 Communication: Parents and students should feel free to contact me at any time if they have any concerns or questions. Students are always welcome to drop by Physics Lab #2 whenever they see me there (which is usually any time Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm) or they can me at the address given at the beginning of this document. Parents can feel free to contact me by at any time, send me a note with their child, or contact me through the school by calling to set up an appointment or leave a message. The sooner an issue is brought to my attention the sooner we can try to resolve it. Please do not hesitate to contact me. If correspondence is convenient for you, please send me a message via as soon as possible and I will add you to my addressbook so that I can contact you quickly if the need should arise. Parents and students are encouraged to make use of the website listed at the beginning of this document as it is updated regularly with homework assignments, test and quiz dates, selected course notes, etc.. Extra Help: Students seeking extra help should see me before or after class or send me an to set up a convenient meeting time for both of us. I am usually available in the morning after 8:00 am and after school on Tuesday and Thursday from about 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. ii
