1 PSD Alsip, Illinois WATER HEATER BULLETI Date: Deceber 20, 1999 o 137 Rev 2 Subject: Gas Water Heater Conversion Policy To: All Accounts * This supersede all previous letters and field bulletins concerning residential and coercial water heater conversion GAS WATER HEATER COVERSIO POLICY All AO Sith Water Products Copany s residential and coercial gas water heaters are designed certified by CSA or UL, under ASI Standards for operation on one type of gas only, as indicated on the water heater s odel nuber and rating plate AO Sith realizes that there ay be certain situations where a field conversion ay be necessary and in order to facilitate such a conversion, A O Sith coplies with CSA or UL regulations ensuring that a field conversion be appropriately and safely copleted An iproper field conversion fro one type of gas to another could cause potentially dangerous conditions that ay cause an explosion or fire resulting in property daage, bodily injury or both AO SMITH WILL OLY ALLOW THE COVERSIO OF GAS WATER HEATERS FROM LP GAS (PROPAE) TO ATURAL GAS THE COVERSIO OF A GAS WATER HEATER FROM ATURAL GAS TO LP GAS (PROPAE) IS OT ALLOWED UDER AY CIRCUMSTACES AO Sith will provide kits as deand warrants through our Parts Departent, phone no Prices, diensions and specifications are subject to change without notice Each conversion kit is to be installed by an AO Sith service agent or a gas utility servicean in accordance with AO Sith s written instructions and all codes and requireents of the authority having jurisdiction Failure to follow instructions could result in serious injury or property daage The utility perforing this work assues responsibility for this conversion Changing the Input on Gas Water Heaters The only changes to the input of a gas water heater allowed are: Adjustents to atch that shown on the rating plate of the heater The installation instructions supplied with the heater indicate if adjustents to input are a required procedure Changes ade as required to adjust the heater for proper operation at high altitude as deterined by a qualified service technician Service anuals include the proper procedure for adjusting heaters at high altitudes Conversion of Gas Water Heaters The conversion of LP gas (Propane) to atural gas is OLY allowed providing: The conversion is done as part of a gas utility s progra where propane appliances were installed anticipating the copletion of natural gas service to the area The conversion ust be done under the direct supervision of the utility and by their service representatives Clais of daage or injury arising fro the unauthorized conversion of any AO Sith water heater not design certified for conversion will be the coplete and total responsibility of the person or entity aking the conversion If you have any questions regarding the above policy, please contact the AO Sith Parts Departent at or our Technical Inforation Center at AO SMITH WATER PRODUCTS CO, IC 5621 W 115TH STREET ALSIP, ILLIOIS PHOE: FAX: wwwhotwaterco Printed in the USA /00 o 137 Rev 2
