arxiv: v2 [math.sg] 18 Jul 2016 Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg Quantization of th 2-dimnsional Harmonic Oscillator Richard Cushman and Jędrzj Śniatycki Abstract W study gomtric quantization of th harmonic oscillator in trms of a singular ral polarization givn by fibrs of th nrgy momntum map. MSC: 81Q70, 81S10 Kywords: 2d-harmonic oscillator, Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization, SU(2) rprsntation 1 Introduction In th framwork of gomtric quantization w hav formulatd a quantization thory basd on th Bohr-Sommrfld quantization ruls [1], [9]. Th aim of this thory is to provid an altrnativ approach to quantization of a compltly intgrabl systm that incorporats th Bohr-Sommrfld spctrum of th dfining st of commuting dynamical variabls of th systm. Th rsulting thory closly rsmbls Hisnbrg s matrix thory and w rfr to it as th Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization [4]. In this papr w giv a dtaild tratmnt of Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. W also rduc th S 1 oscillator symmtry of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator and a discrt Z 2 symmtry. W quantiz th S 1 -rducd systm and th Z 2 S 1 -rducd systm. W now giv an ovrviw of Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization. Lt P b a smooth manifold with symplctic form ω. Considr a compltly intgrabl systm (f 1,..., f n, P, ω), whr n is qual to 1 2 dim P, and f 1,..., f n ar Poisson commuting functions that ar indpndnt on an opn dns subst U of P. If all intgral curvs of th Hamiltonian vctor filds of f 1,..., f n ar closd, thn th joint lvl sts of f 1,..., f n form a singular 1
foliation of (P, ω) by tori. Th rstriction of this singular foliation to th opn dns subst U of P is a rgular foliation of (U, ω U ) by Lagrangian tori. Each torus T of th rgular foliation has a nighbourhood W in P such that th rstriction of ω to W is xact, s [2, chaptr IX]. In othr words, ω W = dθ W. Th modrn vrsion of Bohr-Sommrfld quantization rul rquirs that for ach gnrator Γ i of th fundamntal group of th n-torus T, w hav Γ i θ W = m i h for i = 1,..., n, (1) whr m i is an intgr and h is Planck s constant. It is asy to vrify that th Bohr-Sommrfld conditions ar indpndnt of th choic of th form θ W satisfying dθ W = ω W. If T is in th complmnt of U, thn th Bohr- Sommrfld conditions hold for i = 1,..., dim T. Intrinsically, th Bohr- Sommrfld conditions ar quivalnt to th rquirmnt that th connction on th prquantization lin bundl L whn rstrictd to T has trivial holonomy group [7]. Lt S b th collction of all tori satisfying th Bohr-Sommrfld conditions. W rfr to S as th Bohr-Sommrfld st of th intgrabl systm (f 1,..., f n, P, ω). Sinc th curvatur form of L is symplctic, it follows that th complmnt of S is opn in P. Hnc, th rprsntation spac H of gomtric quantization of an intgrabl systm consists of distribution sctions of L supportd on th Bohr Sommrfld st S. Sinc ths distributional sctions ar covariantly constant along th lavs of th foliation by tori, it follows that ach torus T S corrsponds to a 1-dimnsional subspac H T of H. W choos an innr product ( ) on H so that th family {H T T S} consists of mutually orthogonal subspacs. In Bohr-Sommrfld quantization, on assigns to ach n-tupl of Poisson commuting constants of motion f = (f 1,..., f n ) on P an n-tupl (Q f1,..., Q fn ) of commuting quantum oprators Q fk for 1 k n such that for ach n- torus T S, th corrsponding 1-dimnsional spac H T of th rprsntation spac (H, ( )) is an ignspac for ach Q fk for 1 k n with ignvalu f k T. For any smooth function F C (R n ), th composition F (f 1,..., f n ) is quantizabl. Th oprator Q F (f1,...,f n) acts on ach H T by multiplication by F (f 1,..., f n ) T. W assum that thr xist global action-angl variabls (A i, ϕ i ) on U such that ω U = d( n i=1 A idϕ i ). Thrfor, w can rplac θ W by th 1-form 2
n i=1 A i dϕ i in quation (1) and rwrit th Bohr sommrfld conditions as Γ i A i dϕ i = m i h for ach i = 1,..., n. (2) Sinc th actions A i ar indpndnt of th angl variabls, w can prform th intgration and obtain A i = m i for ach i = 1,..., n. (3) whr = h/2π. For ach multi-indx m = (m 1,..., m n ), w dnot by T m th torus satisfying th Bohr-Sommrfld conditions with intgrs m 1,..., m n on th right hand sid of quation (3). Lt S U b th rstriction of th Bohr-Sommrfld st S to th opn nighbourhood U of P on which th functions f 1,..., f n ar indpndnt. Considr a subspac H U of H givn by th dirct sum of 1-dimnsional subspacs H Tm corrsponding to Bohr-Sommrfld tori T m S U. Lt m b a basis vctor of H Tm. Each m is a joint ignvctor of th commuting oprators (Q A1,..., Q An ) corrsponding to th ignvalu (m 1,..., m n ). Th vctors ( m ) form an orthogonal basis in H U. Thus, ( m m ) = 0 if m m. (4) For ach i = 1,..., n, introduc an oprator a i on H U such that a i (m1,..,,m i 1,m i,m i+1,...,m n) = (m1,...m i 1,m i 1,m i+1,...,m n). (5) In othr words, th oprator a i shifts th joint ignspac of (Q A1,..., Q An ) corrsponding to th ignvalu (m 1,..., m n ) to th joint ignspac of (Q A1,..., Q An ) corrsponding to th ignvalu (m 1,..., m i 1, (m i 1), m i+1,..., m n ). Lt a i b th adjoint of a i. Equations (4) and (5) yild a i (m 1,..,,m i 1,m i,m i+1,...,m n) = (m1,...m i 1,m i +1,m i+1,...,m n) (6) W rfr to th oprators a i and a i as shifting oprators. 1 For vry i = 1,..., n, w hav [a i, Q Aj ] = a i δ ij, (7) 1 In rprsntation thory, shifting oprators ar calld laddr oprators. Th corrsponding oprators in quantum fild thory ar calld th cration and annihilation oprators. 3
whr δ ij is Kronckr s symbol that is qual to 1 if i = j and vanishs if i j. Taking th adjoint, of th prcding quation, w gt [a i, Q A j ] = a i δ ij. Th oprators a i and a i ar wll dfind in th Hilbrt spac H. In [4], w hav intrprtd thm as th rsult of quantization of apropriat functions on P. W did this as follows. W look for smooth complx-valud functions h i on P satisfying th Poisson brackt rlations Th Dirac quantization condition {h j, A i } = i δ ij h j. (8) [Q f, Q h ] = i Q {f,h} (9) implis that w may intrprt th oprator a j as th quantum oprator corrsponding to h j. In othr words, w st a j = Q hj. This choic is consistnt with quation (8) bcaus (7) yilds [Q hj, Q Ai ] = i Q {hj,a i } = i Q iδij h j = δ ij Q hj. Sinc ω U = n i=1 da i dϕ i, it follows that th Poisson brackt of iϕ j and A i is { iϕ j, A i } = X Ai iϕ j = ϕ i iϕ j = i δ ij iϕ j. (10) Comparing quations (8) and (10) w s that w may mak th following idntification a i = Q iϕ i and a i = Q iϕ i for i = 1,..., n. Clarly, th functions h j = ±iϕ j ar not uniquly dfind by quation (8). W can multiply thm by arbitrary functions that commut with all actions A 1,..., A n. Hnc, thr is a choic involvd. W shall us this frdom of choic to satisfy consistncy rquirmnts on th boundary of U in P. 2 Th classical thory W dscrib th gomtry of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. Th configuration spac of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator is R 2 with coordinats x = (x 1, x 2 ). Th phas spac is T R 2 = R 4 with coordinats (x, y) = (x 1, x 2, y 1, y 2 ). On T R 2 th canonical 1-form is Θ = 4
y 1 dx 1 + y 2 dx 2 = y, dx. Th symplctic form on T R 2 is th closd nondgnrat 2-form ω = dθ = dy 1 dx 1 + dy 2 dx 2 whos matrix rprsntation is ω = ( dx dy ) T ( 0 I2 I 2 0 ) ( dx dy ). (11) Givn a smooth function f C (T R 2 ), its Hamiltonian vctor fild is (ω ) 1 df = f y, x f y, x. Lt (x, y) T R 2. For vry f, g C (T R 2 ) thir Poisson brackt is {f, g}(x, y) = ω(x, y) ( X g (x, y), X f (x, y) ), which is a smooth function on T R 2. Th structur matrix ( ) {x i, x j } {x i, y j } of th Poisson brackt {, } on C (T R 2 ) is ( 0 I 2 I 2 0 ). {y i, x j } {y i, y j } Th Hamiltonian function of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator is E : T R 2 R : (x, y) 1 2 (x2 1 + y 2 1) (x2 2 + y 2 2). (12) Th corrsponding Hamiltonian vctor fild X E = X 1, x + X 2, y can b computd using de = X E ω = X 2, dx X 1, dy. W gt X 1 = E y and X 2 = E x. (13) Thrfor th quations of motion of th harmonic oscillator ar ẋ = y and ẏ = x. (14) Th solution to th abov quations is th on paramtr family of transformations ( ) ( ) ( ) x (cos t) I2 (sin t) I φ E t (x, y) = A(t) = 2 x (15) y (sin t) I 2 (cos t) I 2 y This dfins an S 1 action, calld th oscillator symmtry, on T R 2, which is a map from R to Sp(4, R) that snds t to th 4 4 symplctic matrix A(t), which is priodic of priod 2π. Sinc E is constant along th intgral curvs of X E, th manifold (E ) 1 () = {(x, y) R 4 x 2 + y 2 = 2, > 0} = S 3 2, (16) which is a 3-sphr of radius 2, is invariant undr th flow of X E. Th configuration spac R 2 is invariant undr th S 1 action S 1 R 2 R 2 : (t, x) R t x, whr R t is th matrix ( ) cos t sin t sin t cos t. This map lifts 5
to a symplctic action Ψ t of S 1 on phas spac T R 2 that snds (x, y) to Ψ t (x, y) = (R t x, R t y). Th infinitsimal gnrator of this action is Y (x, y) = d dt t=0 Φ t (x, y) = ( x 2, x 1, y 2, y 1 ). (17) Th vctor fild Y is Hamiltonian corrsponding to th Hamiltonian function L (x, y) = (y 1, y 2 ), (x 2, x 1 ) = x 1 y 2 x 2 y 1, (18) that is, Y = X L. L is radily rcognizd as th angular momntum. Th intgral curv of th vctor fild X L on R 4 starting at (x, y) = (x 1, x 2, y 1, y 2 ) is s ϕ L s (x, y) = cos s sin s 0 0 sin s cos s cos s sin s 0 0 sin s cos s ( ) x, y which is priodic of priod 2π. Th Hamiltonian of th harmonic oscillator is an intgral of X L. Th S 1 symmtry Ψ of th harmonic oscillator is calld th angular momntum symmtry. Considr th compltly intgrabl systm (E, L, R 4, ω ) whr E (12) and L (18) ar th nrgy and angular momntum of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. Th Hamiltonian vctor filds X E = y 1 x 1 + y 2 x 2 x 1 y 1 x 2 y 2 and X L = x 2 x 1 + x 1 x 2 y 2 y 1 + y 1 corrsponding to th Hamiltonians E and L, rspctivly, dfin th gnralizd distribution D : R 4 T R 4 : (x, y) D (x,y) = span{x E (x, y), X L (x, y)}. (19) Bfor w can invstigat th gomtry of D (19) w will nd som vry dtaild gomtric information about th 2-torus action Φ : T 2 R 4 R 4 : ( (t 1, t 2 ), (x, y) ) ϕ E t 1 ϕ L t 2 (x, y) (20) gnratd by th 2π priodic flows ϕ E t 1 and ϕ L t 2 of th vctor filds X E and X L, rspctivly. Using invariant thory w find th spac V = R 4 /T 2 of orbits of th T 2 -action Φ (20) as follows. Th algbra of T 2 -invariant polynomials on R 4 is gnratd by σ 1 = 1 2 (y2 1 + x2 1 + y2 2 + x2 2 ) and σ 2 = x 1 y 2 x 2 y 1. Lt σ 3 = 1 2 (y2 1 + x2 1 y2 2 x2 2 ) and σ 4 = x 1 y 1 + x 2 y 2. Thn y 2 6
σ 2 1 = σ2 2 + σ2 3 + σ2 4 σ2 2. From th fact that σ 1 0, w gt σ 1 σ 2. So th T 2 orbit spac V is th smialgbraic varity {(σ 1, σ 2 ) R 2 σ 2 σ 1, σ 1 0}. Morovr V is a diffrntial spac with its diffrntial structur givn by th spac C (R 4 ) T 2 of smooth T 2 -invariant functions on R 4. That is th diffrntial structur of V is th spac of smooth functions in σ 1 and σ 2. Not that th T 2 -orbit map π : R 4 V R 2 : (x, y) ( σ 1 (x, y), σ 2 (x, y) ) is just th nrgy momntum mapping (EM) : R 4 R 2 : (x, y) ( E (x, y), L (x, y) ) of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. Abstractly, th Whitny stratification of V is 0 i 2 V i whr V 2 = V \ V sing, V 1 = V sing \ (V sing ) sing, and V 0 = (V sing ) sing. Hr W sing is th smialgbraic varity of singular points of th smialgbraic varity W. W hav V 2 = {(σ 1, σ 2 ) R 2 σ 2 < σ 1 }, V 1 = {(σ 1, σ 2 ) R 2 0 < σ 2 = σ 1 }, and V 0 = {(σ 1, σ 2 ) R 2 σ 1 = σ 2 = 0}. For j = 0, 1, 2 lt U j = EM 1 (V j ). It is straightforward to s that th isotropy group T 2 (x,y) at (x, y) of th T 2 -action Φ (20) is T(x,y) 2 = {}, if (x, y) U 2 S 1 if (x, y) U 1 T 2, if (x, y) U 0. Thus {U j, j = 0, 1, 2} is th stratification of R 4 by orbit typ, which is qual to T 2 -symmtry typ whr all th isotropy groups ar qual, sinc T 2 is ablian. Bcaus V j is th imag of U j undr th nrgy momntum map, w s that U j is th subst of R 4 whr th rank of DEM is j. Sinc ω (x, y) : T (x,y) R 4 T (x,y) R4 : v (x,y) {w (x,y) ω(x, y)(v (x,y), w (x,y) )} is bijctiv, it follows that dim D (x,y) = dim span{de(x, y), dl(x, y)} = rank DEM(x, y). (21) Thrfor U j is th union of j-tori for j = 0, 1, 2 ach of which is an nrgy momntum lvl st of (EM). 7
W turn to invstigating th gnralizd distribution D (19). Sinc ω(x E, X L ) = {L, E }, w s that for vry (x, y) R 4 w hav ω(x, y)d (x,y) = 0. Thus vry subspac D (x,y) in th distribution D is an ω-isotropic subspac of th symplctic vctor spac ( T (x,y) R 4, ω(x, y) ). If (x, y) U j thn dim D (x,y) = j. So if (x, y) U 2, thn D (x,y) is a Lagrangian subspac of ( T (x,y) R 4, ω(x, y) ). If u (x,y), v (x,y) D (x,y), thn thinking of u (x,y) and v (x,y) as vctor filds on T R 4 w obtain [u (x,y), v (x,y) ] = 0, bcaus thir flows commut. Thus D is an involutiv gnralizd distribution, which is calld th nrgy-momntum polarization of th symplctic manifold (R 4, ω). Th laf (= intgral manifold) L (x,y) of th distribution D through th point (x, y) R 4 is diffomorphic to T 2 /T(x,y) 2. In particular w hav T 2, if (x, y) U 2 L (x,y) = T 1 = S 1, if (x, y) U 1 T 0 = pt, if (x, y) U 0. Thus D is a gnralizd toric distribution. Not that th lavs of D, ach of which is an nrgy momntum lvl st of (EM), foliat th strata U j for j = 0, 1, 2. Thus th spac of lavs R 4 /D of D is th T 2 orbit spac V. 6` S 1 S 3 - pt T 2 Figur 1. Th bifurcation diagram of th nrgy momntum map. W collct all th gomtric information about th lavs of th gnralizd distribution D in th bifurcation diagram of th nrgy momntum map of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator abov. Th rang of this map is indicatd by th shadd rgion. W now find action-angl coordinats for th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. Considr th T 2 action on (T R 2, ω ) gnratd by th flows of 8
th Hamiltonian vctor filds X E of nrgy E (12) and X L of angular momntum L (18), spcifically, Φ : T 2 T R 2 T R 2 : ( (t, s), (x, y) ) ϕ E t Considr th chang coordinats by ( ψ : T R 2 T R 2 x : y) ( ) ξ = 1 η 2 ϕ L s (x, y) ( x y ). (22) Thn ψ is symplctic, that is ω = ψ ω = dη 1 dξ 1 +dη 2 dξ 2. Morovr, it diagonalizs th Hamiltonians for E and L, that is, in th nw coordinats E bcoms whil L bcoms Lt and lt E(ξ, η) = ψ E (ξ, η) = 1 2 (ξ2 1 + η ξ η 2 2); (23) L(ξ, η) = ψ L (ξ, η) = 1 2 (ξ2 1 + η 2 1 ξ 2 2 η 2 2). (24) A 1 = 1 2 (ξ2 1 + η 2 1) = 1 2( E(ξ, η) + L(ξ, η) ) 0 (25a) A 2 = 1 2 (ξ2 2 + η 2 2) = 1 2( E(ξ, η) L(ξ, η) ) 0 (25b) A : T R 2 (R 0 ) 2 R 2 : (ξ, η) ( A 1 (ξ, η), A 2 (ξ, η) ). (26) Thn th flow of X A1 and X A2 dfins a T 2 -action on A 1 ((R >0 ) 2 ) givn by T 2 A 1 ((R >0 ) 2 ) T R 2 A 1 ((R >0 ) 2 ) T R 2 : ( (t, s), (ξ, η) ) cos t 0 sin t ( ) ϕ E ϕ L (ξ, η) = cos s 0 sin s ξ sin t 0 cos t , η sin s 0 cos s which is priodic of priod 2π on vry 2-torus Ta 2 1,a 2 = A 1 1 (a 1) A 1 2 (a 2), whr (a 1, a 2 ) (R >0 ) 2. So th functions A 1 (25a) and A 2 (25b) ar actions and th map A (26) is th action map. Th angl corrsponding to th action A 1 is ϑ 1 = t = tan 1 η 1 ξ 1 ; whil th angl corrsponding to th action A 2 is ϑ 2 = s = tan 1 η 2 ξ 2. A calculation shows that ω = da 1 dϑ 1 + da 2 dϑ 2. Thus (A 1, A 2, ϑ 1, ϑ 2 ) ar action-angl coordinats on ( A 1 ((R >0 ) 2 ), ω A 1 ((R >0 ) )) 2. Whn A2 = 0 on A 1 ((R 0 ) 2 ) action-angl coordinats on A 1 (R >0 {0}) ar (A 1, 0, ϑ 1, 0); whil whn A 1 = 0 on A 1 ((R 0 ) 2 ) action-angl coordinats on A 1 ({0} R >0 ) ar (0, A 2, 0, ϑ 2 ). 9
3 Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization In this sction w carry out th Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. First w look at its Bohr-Sommrfld quantization. quantizing th action functions, namly, stting This amounts to A 1 = m = a 1 and A 2 = n = a 2, (27) whr (m, n) (Z 0 ) 2. Nxt associat a vctor m,n to ach Bohr-Sommrfld torus A 1 (a 1, a 2 ) whr (a 1, a 2 ) li in (R 0 ) 2, which is th imag of th action mapping A. In othr words, (a 1, a 2 ) = ( 1 2 (+l), 1 2 ( l)), whr (, l) = (m + n, m n) lis in th imag V of th nrgy momntum mapping (EM) of th harmonic oscillator. Lt H = span { m,n (m, n (Z 0 ) 2 }. Bcaus th Bohr-Sommrfld tori ar disjoint, w may choos a hrmitian innr product, on H so that m,n, m,n = δ (m,n),(m,n ) = δ m,m δ n,n. Thn (H,, ) is a Hilbrt spac. On H w hav two slf adjoint oprators Q Aj, j = 1, 2, whr A 1 ( m,n ) = m m,n and A 2 ( m,n ) = n m,n. (28) Th quantum spctrum of th harmonic oscillator is th joint spctrum (Z 0 ) 2 of th oprators Q Aj, j = 1, 2. 6 a 2 - a1 Figur 2. Th quantum lattic for th joint spctrum of th quantum oprators {Q A1,Q A2 } of th 2-dimnsional harmonic oscillator. Th axs ar in units of h. To complt th Bohr-Sommrfld quantization to th Bohr-Sommrfld- Hisnbrg quantization w dfin lowring oprators a j on H as follows a 1 m,n = { m 1,n, if m Z 1 0, if m = 0 and a 2 m,n = 10 { m,n 1, if n Z 1 0, if n = 0. (29)
According to th thory of sction 1, ths lowring oprators a j, j = 1, 2, corrspond to th quantum oprators Q i ϑ j, j = 1, 2, rspctivly. Hr ϑ j is th angl coordinat corrsponding to th action A j. Howvr, th functions i ϑ j ar not smooth on phas spac. To rmdy this difficincy, w us th functions z j = ξ j + i η j = r j i ϑ j, j = 1, 2, instad. Thn Q zj, j = 1, 2, ar lowring oprators on H, whr Q z1 m,n = { b 1 m,n m 1,n, if m Z 1 0, if m = 0, (30a) that is, b 1 0,n = 0, and Q z2 m,n = { b 2 m,n m,n 1, if n Z 1 0, if n = 0,, (30b) that is, b 2 m,0 = 0. Th bj m,n C ar dtrmind blow. On H w hav th quantum oprator Q z j, j = 1, 2, which is th adjoint of Q zj. By dfinition Q z 1 m,n = b 1 m,n m+1,n and Q z 2 m,n = b 2 m,n m,n+1. For j = 1, 2 w idntify Q z j with Q zj. For 1 j, k 2 w hav {z j, z k } = {ξ j + i η j, ξ k i η k } = i {ξ j, η k } + i {η k, ξ j } = 2i δ j,k and {z j, z k } = 0 = {z j, z k }. So by th Dirac quantization prscription w gt [Q zj, Q Ak ] = [Q zj, Q 1 4 (z kz k +z k z k ) ] = i Q 1 4 {z j,z k z k +z k z k } = i Q 1 2 z k{z j,z k } = i Q i z k δ j,k = δ j,k Q zk ; (31a) and [Q zj, Q Ak ] = i Q 1 2 z k{z j,z k } = i Q i z k δ j,k = δ j,k Q zk ; (31b) [Q zj, Q zk ] = i Q {zj,z k } = i δ j,k Q 2i δj,k = 2 δ j,k. (31c) Thus {Q zj, Q zj, Q Aj }, j = 1, 2, span a finit dimnsional Li algbra with brackt rlations [Q zj, Q Aj ] = i Q zj, [Q zj, Q Aj ] = i Q zj, and [Q zj, Q zj ] = 2, 11
which commut with ach othr. Th quantum oprators Q zj and Q zj ar not slf adjoint. Howvr, w can dfin th quantum oprators Q ξj = 1 2 (Q z j + Q zj ) and Q ηj = 1 2i (Q z j Q zj ), which ar slf adjoint. A straightforward calculation shows that th skw hrmitian oprators { 1 i Q ξ j, 1 i Q η j, 1 i Q A j } satisfis th brackt rlations [ 1 i Q ξ j, 1 i Q A j ] = 1 i Q η j, [ 1 i Q η j, 1 i Q A j ] = 1 i Q ξ j, [ 1 i Q ξ j, 1 i Q η j ] = 1 i (32a) (32b) (32c) and thus span a finit dimnsional Li algbra L j, j = 1, 2, which is a subalgbra of u(h, C), and [L 1, L 2 ] = 0. Bcaus τ 4 is a Casimir of th Poisson algbra (C (R 2 R 2 0 ), {, } R 2 R 2 ), th Poisson brackt {, } 0, H + on th spac C (H + ) of smooth functions on th fully rducd phas spac H + has structur matrix givn in tabl 3. Not that th structur matrix of th {τ i, τ j } H + τ 1 τ 2 τ3 τ τ 3 2τ 2 τ 2 2 τ 3 0 2τ 1 τ3 2τ 2 2τ 1 0 Tabl 3. Th structur matrix of th Poisson brackt {, } H + on C (H + ). Poisson brackt {, } H + in tabl 3 dfins a Li algbra, which is isomorphic to su(2). Th diffrntial structur C (H + ) is gnratd by th functions τ 1, τ 2, and τ 3. Th nxt argumnt shows that th diffrntial spac (H +, C (H + )) is locally diffomorphic to a closd subst of Euclidan spac. In othr words, th diffrntial spac (H +, C (H + )) is subcartsian, s [8]. Th imag undr th rstriction of th injctiv map φ : R 2 R 0 R 2 R 0 : (τ 1, τ 2, τ 3 ) (π 1, π 2, π 3 ) = ( τ 1, τ 2, ( τ 3 ) 2) to H + is S 2 {π 3 0}. So φ ( C (S 2 {π 3 0}) ) = C (H + ). Thus, th diffrntial spacs (H +, C (H + )) and (S 2 {π 3 0}, C (S 2 {π 3 0})) ar diffomorphic. Bcaus S 2 {π 3 0} is a smialgbraic varity in R 3, bing dfind by π1 2 + π2 2 + π2 3 = 2 and π 3 0, it is a closd subst of R 3. Hnc C (S 2 {π 3 0}) = C (R 3 ) (S 2 {π 3 0}). This implis 23
that (S 2 {π 3 0}, C (S 2 {π 3 0})) is a locally compact subcartsian diffrntial spac, s [2, Chaptr VII]. Th fully rducd Hamiltonian of th fully rducd systm is L : H + R 2 R 0 R : (τ 1, τ 2, τ 3 ) τ 3 (45) and th fully rducd quations of motion on R 3 ar τ 1 = {τ 1, L } H + = {τ 1, τ 3 } H + = 2τ 2 τ 2 = {τ 2, L } H + = {τ 2, τ 2 } H + = 2τ 1 (46) τ 3 = {τ 3, L } H + = 0. Sinc ( τ 3 ) 2 + τ τ 2 2 is a Casimir of th Poisson algbra (C (R 2 R 2 0 ), {, } R 2 R 2 0, ), th fully rducd phas spac H + is invariant undr th flow of (46). So (46) rstrictd to H + givs th intgral curvs of th fully rducd Hamiltonian vctor fild X L on th diffrntial spac ( H +, C (H + ) ). Th map ψ : D 2 = {(τ 1, τ 2 ) R 2 τ τ } H + R 3 : (τ 1, τ 2 ) (τ 1, τ 2, 2 τ 2 1 τ 2 2 ) is a diffomorphism of th diffrntial spac (D 2, C (D 2 )) onto th diffrntial spac (H +, C (H + )) providd w say that f C (D 2 ) if and only if thr is an F C (H + ) such that f = ψ F. In othr words, {τ i, τ j } D 2 τ 1 τ 2 τ τ 2 1 τ 2 2 τ τ 2 1 τ Tabl 4. Th structur matrix of th Poisson brackt {, } 2 D on C (D 2 ). C (D 2 ) = ψ (C (H + )). Not that topologically D 2 is a closd 2-disk, but its diffrntial structur C (D 2 ) is nonstandard. Th structur matrix of th Poisson brackt {, } 2 D on C (D 2 ) is givn in tabl 4. Th fully rducd Hamiltonian on D 2 is L = ψ L : D 2 R 2 R : (τ 1, τ 2 ) 24 2 τ 2 1 τ 2 2.
Th Hamiltonian vctor fild of L X L on th diffrntial spac (D 2, C (D 2 )) has intgral curvs govrnd by τ 1 = {τ 1, L } 2 D = ( ) 1 2τ2 {τ 2 2 τ1 2 τ 2 2 1, τ 2 } 2 D = 2τ2 τ 2 = {τ 2, L } 2 D = 2τ 1. Th function  = τ1 2 τ 2 2 is an action function on D = D 2 \ {(0, 0)}, bcaus its Hamiltonian vctor fild X is τ 2 τ 1 + τ 1 τ 2 has intgral curvs t ( ) ( cos t sin t τ1 0 ) with (τ 0 1, τ2 0) D, which ar priodic of sin t cos t τ 0 2 priod 2π. Th corrsponding angl is ϑ = tan 1 τ 2 τ 1. Using tabl 4 w s that th fully rducd symplctic form ω D on D 1 is dτ 2 2 τ1 2 τ dτ 1, which quals dâ d ϑ. 6.2 Th quantizd fully rducd harmonic oscillator In this subsction w giv th Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization of th fully rducd harmonic oscillator ( L, D 2, {, } 2 D ), whr is fixd and is nonngativ. A straightforward calculation shows that th volum vol D of th puncturd 2-disk D using th fully rducd symplctic form ω D on D is 1 dτ 2 dτ 1 is 2π. Thus (D, ω D ) is quantizabl if thr is a 2 2 τ 2 1 τ 2 2 positiv intgr q such that 2π = h q, that is, = q. Not that q is a fixd positiv intgr. Th 1-torus  1 (l) on D is a Bohr-Sommrfld 1-torus if thr is an intgr m such that m h =  d ϑ = l(2π),  1 (l) that is, l = m. Th scond quality abov follows bcaus  1 (l) is paramtrizd by ϑ 2 l 2 (cos ϑ, sin ϑ) for ϑ [0, 2π]. On D w hav l 2 = 2 τ1 2 τ 2 2, which implis 2 l 2, that is, 0 < m < q. Thus thr ar q + 1 Bohr-Sommrfld tori on D 2, namly, q 1 rgular Bohr-Sommrfld 1-tori {(τ 1, τ 2 ) D τ1 2 + τ 2 2 = (q2 m 2 ) 2 } with 0 < m < q, on singular 1-torus D 2 = {(τ 1, τ 2 ) D τ1 2 + τ 2 2 = 2 }, and a singular point {(0, 0)}. Corrsponding to ach of th q + 1 Bohr-Sommrfld tori constructd in th prcding paragraph, w associat a vctor ê m, 0 m q, which ar 25
orthogonal undr th hrmitian innr product ê k, ê k = δ k,k. Thir span is th Hilbrt spac Ĥq, which is th ignspac of th slf adjoint quantum oprator QÂ corrsponding to th ignvalu q. Th spac of quantum stats of th fully rducd harmonic oscillator is th Hilbrt spac Ĥ = q Z 0 Ĥ q. Th shifting oprators on Ĥq in th Bohr-Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization of th fully rducd harmonic oscillator ar th lowring oprator a 1 (ê m ) = { êm 1, if 1 m q and th raising oprator a 0, if m = 0 2 (ê m ) = ê m+1, if 0 m q 1. Ths oprators corrspond to th quantum oprators Q i ϑ and Q ϑ, i rspctivly. Sinc ±i ϑ ar not smooth functions on D 2, w rplac thm with th smooth functions τ ± = 1 i (τ 1 ± i τ 2 ) = 1 r = τ1 2 + τ 2 2. Using tabl 4 w gt {τ +, τ } 2 D = i {τ 1, τ 2 } 2 D = 2i 2 τ1 2 τ 2 2 = 4i Â, i r±i ϑ, whr {τ +, Â} D 2 = i τ +, and {τ, Â} D 2 = i τ. Thus {τ 1, τ 2, Â} span a Li algbra undr {, } 2 D, which is isomorphic to su(2). Dfin quantum shifting oprators on Ĥq by Q τ ê m = c m ê m 1 if 1 m q and 0 if m = 0 and Q τ+ ê m = c m+1 ê m+1, if 0 m q 1 and thir adjoints Q τ ê m = c m+1 ê m+1 and Q τ + ê m = c m 1 ê m 1 if 1 m q and 0 if m = 0. Hr c m C for ach 0 m q. An argumnt analogous to th on usd in sction 5 dtrmins th q + 1 cofficints c m for 0 m q. W gt c m = { i 2m(m 1), if 1 m q Thus for ach q Z 0, if m = 0. 0 th oprators {Q τ1, Q τ2, QÂ} giv ris to a q + 1-dimnsional irrducibl rprsntation of su(2) on Ĥq. 7 Summary W summariz th contnts of this papr. In sctions 2 6 w giv th Bohr- Sommrfld-Hisnbrg quantization of th following Liouvill intgrabl systms: th two dgr of frdom harmonic oscillator (E, L, T R 2, ω); its rduction by th S 1 oscillator symmtry on a fixd nrgy lvl to th on dgr of frdom systm ( L, S 2, ω ); and th rduction of th lattr systm undr th Z 2 symmtry to a on dgr of frdom systm ( L, D 2, {, } 2 D ). In ach of th abov intgrabl systms w find th Hilbrt spac of quantum stats using Bohr-Sommrfld quantization. Using th lowring and raising oprators coming from th Hisnbrg quantization, w obtain skw symmtric quantum oprators on thr spacs of quantum stats. Each of 26
th thr collctions of quantum oprators givs ris to a rprsntation of a finit dimnsional Li algbras, namly, L 2, su(2), and su(2), rspctivly. Each of ths rprsntations dcompos thir rspctiv spac of quantum stats into: a countably infinit numbr of copis of an infinit dimnsional irrducibl rprsntation of L 2 ; two finit dimnsional irrducibl rprsntations of su(2) of dimnsion q and q + 1; and a singl finit dimnsional irrducibl rprsntation of su(2) of dimnsion q + 1.
