2 Welcome to choose the INE-DDB-303A Portable Conductivity meter, read this instruction in detail before operating the meter for the first time or after a long time from the last operation, it will help you to operate the meter better. The meter must be sent to metrological service or other departments that are qualified to check for checking after being used for one year, and only those qualified ones can be used again. For short-term not in use, immerse the Conductive probe platinum in DI water. If the operating interval more than 6 hours or for long-term storage, wash the probe and store it in a empty protective bottle. After stored or used for some time, re-calibrate the conductive probe because the constant of probe may change. 4 1 Installation 1.1 Tools and Components needed for Installation To provides the tools needed for installation. 5 2Operation 2.1 Introduction Definition of Terms Cell Constant : The cell constant of a pair of platinum sheets is the ratio of distance between the two sheets to the area of each sheet. The ratio is measured in cm-1. Temperature coefficient: The temperature coefficient is the % change of conductivity temperature in %/ C Features Model INE-DDB-303A Conductivity Meter is used for measuring conductivity of water solution in laboratories. It is applied widely in the fields of petroleum chemical industry, biological pharmacy, sewage treatment, environmental monitoring, metallurgy, universities and scientific research institutes. If it is fitted with the conductive electrode with suitable constant, it can also be used to measure conductivity of pure water or ultra pure water in electronic semiconductor plant, nuclear energy industry and power stations. Main characters: Four kinds of range, automatic range changing, automatic carryover display, convenient operation, high precise measurement; Power supply: two pieces of No.5 batteries, portable for field operation, with low power consumption; 1 3 bit large screen LCD display, with displaying conductivity value and 2 temperature value simultaneously, smart appearance, clear display. Three kinds of constants electrode (0.01, 1.0, 10) can be selected to match the meter, the meter can not only measure the conductivity of ordinary water solution, but also measure the conductivity of ultra pure water. 4

6 2.1.3 Specifications Measurement range: (0~10 5 μs cm -1 ). With four kinds of ranges which can be switched automatically. They are: 0.00~19.99μs/cm; 20.0~199.9μs/cm; 200~1999μs/cm; 2000~10000μs/cm; 10.0~100.0mS/cm(to be matched with K=10 conductive probe) Note: To measure high conductivity, a large constant conductive electrode is commonly used. If conductivity is 10000μs cm -1, the electrode with constant 10 is used. Accuracy of electronic unit: ±1.0% (FS) ±1 bit. Accuracy of the meter: 1.5% (FS) ±1 bit. Accuracy of temperature coefficient of electronic unit: ±0.5% / Manual temp compensation range:(15~35), basic standard temp 25. Stability accuracy of electronic unit: ±0.66% (FS) ±1 bit/3h Accuracy of repeatablity of electronic unit: ±0.33% (FS) ±1 bit. Outside dimension: l*b*h(mm) 170*80*35. 7 2.1.4 Physical overview The Conductivity Meter is composed of a meter and a probe system. See Figure as following: The Display : The Keypad (picture) The keypad has five keys. The Meter is usually controlled by the keypad. Functionality automatically changes based on context. Key functions are listed in the Table 1: Table 1 Keypad functions key Function 1 On/Off Meter power switch. Move the selection cursor upward when selecting. 8 2.1.5 Uses for the Meter Conductivity is a measure of a material s ability to conduct an electric current. The meter measures the conductivity of solutions with high accuracy. When equipped with a probe with the proper cell constant, the conductivity meter can measure the conductivity of ultra pure water. Users can select different probes each with a different cell constant to match the expected conductivity of samples to be measured. Refer to the final packing list for the probes that are Shipped. This section describes the operation of the Meter. There are four major steps to measure conductivity with the meter: Meter setup ( Setup on page ) Prepare the conductive probe ( Prepare Probes on page ) Set or calibrate the cell constant ( Calibrate on page ) Measure conductivity ( Perform a Measurement on page ) 2.2 Instrument Control Turn on the Meter Insert as No.5 batteries; Press ON/OFF key and the meter enters into the state of measurement; Pre-warm for 15 minutes. Picture Setup Setup Temperature In the state of measurement ("MEAS" is displayed on the right bottom), press " " or" " key to enter solution temperature adjusting state (" " indication light is flashing ), press " " or" " key again to adjust temp. Press "Enter" key to exit from temperature adjusting state and enter measuring state. Picture 7

9 Prepare conductive probe 1. Wash the electrode with DI water fully; then rinse the electrode as 4.3 Method of cleaning and reserve. If it is unstable or mistake continuously, please refer to 4 Maintenance and service. 2. Check samples: If the electrode working properly in standard buffer solution but not normal in samples, please check if there is interfering substance in samples or if the conductivity cell has been mechanical damaged. 3. Platinum black electrode: There is some loose platinum black layer on the surface of platinum slice. It can only be wash with DI water, otherwise the platinum black layer might be damaged and cause inaccuracy. 4. If the performance of the electrode reduces, rinse the platinum slice with absolute alcohol and DI water in proper order. 5. Since the platinum black layer may absorb samples when measuring, must wash the electrode after using. 6. For long-term in use or not in use, the constant cell may change and need to recalibrate. Set or calibrate the cell constant The cell constant for each probe was calibrated and printed on the probe label before shipping. However, transportation, storage, and continued use may change the cell constant to some degree. Recalibrate the conductivity probe before measurement. 1 Select the conductive probe with different cell constants and with different measuring method according to the value of measured medium resistance or the value of conductivity. Note1: When measuring conductivity, to select conductive probe constant correctly, in order to get high precise measurement. Three kinds of conductive probes with constant 0.01, 1.0, 10 can be matched to the meter. To select conductive probe with relative constant according to reference table1 of measuring range. Note2: The conductive probe with constant 0.1or10 are classified into "bright" and "platinum black", platinum probe is usually called platinum black conductive probe,the measuring range of bright conductive probe is usually0~300μs/cm. 8

Press "Mode" key to enter cell constant calibrating state, display C= ; Press " " or" " key again to adjust cell constant value as shown as following; picture Press Enter key to exit from constant adjusting state and enter measuring state. 9

11 The adjusting method: If the conductive probe with constant 0.95, adjust the digit to be 950; If it is the conductive probe with constant 11, adjust the digit to be 1.100; If it is titanium alloy conductive probe with constant 0.012, adjust the digit to be Calibration In order to calibrate, you need to make a standard solution. Read the printed cell constant from the label. Use Table 3 to find the suitable KCl concentration of the standard solution. Calibrating with standard electrode 1 Use a standard conductive probe with known cell constant as Jstandard 2 Select standard solution( see Table 3) according to the cell constant and the Composition of Standard Solution (see in Table 4), 3 Soak the conductive probe with unknown cell constant as J1 and the standard conductive probe with known cell constant(all have been clean) both into solution at same depth; 4 Connect them to conductivity meter in turn, set the measured conductivity to be K1, and K standard respectively; 5 calculate cell constant: J1=J*K standard/k1 In which: K1= it is the conductivity value that the conductive probe with unknown cell constant measured Kstandard = constant measured it is the conductivity value that the conductive probe with known cell 10

Place the probe in a location where the solution can flow freely around the measuring tip. To measure ultra pure water, install the conductivity probe in a sealed container with ultra pure water flowing through. The flow rate should be not too high. Choose the correct probe Before measuring, choose the proper conductivity probe. Refer to Table 6 when choosing a conductivity probe. There are two kinds of conductivity probes with cell constant K=1.0: Platinum black - the platinum sheet has a platinum black coating. Bright - the platinum sheet does not have a platinum black coating. The Bright probe is suitable for wider measurement range (2 to 3000 μs/cm). If conductivity is 3000 μs/cm, the measurement may not be as accurate. To measure high conductivity, use a conductivity probe with a high cell constant. 11

13 When conductivity is ms/cm, use a conductivity probe with cell constant = 5 or 10. When conductivity is ms/cm, use a conductivity probe with cell constant = 10. Table 7 Conductivity Range and Corresponding Cell Constant Conductivity range Resistivity range Recommended cell (Ω-cm) constant (cm-1) μs/cm M 50.0k μs/cm 5.00 M 5.00k ms/cm ms/cm After calibrating the conductive probes with different constants, press "Enter" key to exit from calibrating state and then enters measuring state,; Soak the conductive probe into solution, the displayed value is the conductivity value of measured solution at this moment. When using the conductive probe with cell constant 1 to measure, the displayed value on the screen is the actual conductivity of measured solution. When using the conductive probe with constant 10 to measure, the displayed value multiply by 10 is the actual conductivity of measured solution. When the meter is used to measure the conductivity of pure water or ultra pure water in industrial flow, select the titanium alloy conductive probe with constant 0.01, together with the sealed corrosion-proof flow through(see diag.2). The displayed value should be multiplied by The concluded value is the actual conductivity. Operating procedure: A) Clean the conductive probe with ultra water; B) Revolve the conductive probe into the measuring cell, connect water in and water out pipes according to diag.2; C) Make sure that there is no air coming into the flowing water, there is no bubble in thepipeeither; D) Flow speed should become faster gradually until conductivity value is stable and the value doesn't change under faster flow speed. When using titanium alloy electrode with constant 0.01, the displayed value should be multiplied by The concluded value is the actual conductivity. 12

14 Measuring electrode Water out Measuring trough Water in Diag2. Measuring cell operating diagram 2.3 ATTENTION To avoid pollution when measuring ultra pure water. It is better to measure with sealing flowing method. Since fixed 2% temperature coefficient compensation is adopted in temperature compensation, make measurement without compensation(adjusting temperature to be 25 ) when measuring ultra pure water, after that, consult the table. In order to guarantee precise measurement, clean conductive probe with distilled water of 0.5μs/cm (or de-ion water) twice, then wash it with measured water three times before measurement. Conductive probe socket must be prevented from moisture to avoid any unnecessary error. Conductive probe needs constant calibration at regular intervals. Take out batteries if the meter won't be used for a long time; If "LOBAT" is displayed on the top left corner, or the displayed value is not stable, it's necessary to replace batteries. 2.4 How to use Back-light When measuring at night, turn on back-light key at above left of the meter. It is not recommended to use in the daytime as it will reduce the battery life. 2.5 Turn off the meter After using the meter, Press [On/Off] to turn off the meter.when not in use, all probes should be soaked in distilled water. 13

15 If the meter is out of use for a long time: Keep the socket of the meter clean and dry. Avoid contact of the socket with acid, alkaline and salt solution. Keep the input terminal of the meter (connector of probe) clean and dry. If the probe has been exposed to high humidity or water, wipe the cable interface of the probe with dry gauze or Kimwipe. When the conductivity probe will be out of use for a short time, soak it in DI water. If the probe will be out of use for 6 hours or longer, rinse it with DI water and store it in a protective bottle. 3 Maintenance The meter adopts DC batteries power supply and liquid crystal display, with good reliability. Inspect as follows if the meter doesn't work regularly. The meter can't work regularly when measuring A) Inspect if the conductive probe has inserted into the socket, the plug positioning groove should be aligned with the socket positioning pin; B) The cable line of Conductive probe is not correct or the conductive probe is damaged; C) Batteries' voltage is lower than 2.5V; D) There is some trouble inside the meter. When the meter is switched on, there is no display on screen. A) Socket of batteries is loose, contact is not good; B) There is some trouble inside the meter. C) No life of battery. 3.2 Cleaning and Storage for conductive probe This section describes how to maintain and store the probe. Probe cleaning General electrode cleaning includes inorganic cleaning, organic cleaning, grease cleaning, and protein precipitation cleaning. The type of cleaning needed depends on the contaminants and the probe. After one or more cleaning procedures, rinse the outside of the probe with distilled water. Probe storage Soak the measuring tip with distilled water or deionized water for temporary storage.when the electrode is not used for a long time, put the electrode back in the box and store it a dry place at ambient temperature. 14
