5 Research Interests My research activity begun with the laurea degree thesis, under the supervision of Prof. L. Castellani (Università del Piemonte Orientale), where I studied, by means of algebraic techniques, the geometry of a set of 7 dimensional coset manifolds, and whose results are placed in a more general framework, in which a new class of solutions of IIB supergravity was studied; during my Ph.D. I focused my attention on the relation between quantum or conformal field theories and theories describing gravity in various regimes, such as superstring and brane theories and their low energy limit: supergravity. In the first year of Ph.D., my research activity was principally devoted to AdS/CF T conjecture [1, 2], explored on gravity side; in particular, in collaboration with Prof. L. Castellani, I found new supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity which are the direct product of a 3 dimensional AdS space time and a generic 7 dimensional coset manifold G/H. The importance of this class of solutions is twofold: on the one hand they lead to new consistent supersymmetric compactifications of type IIB supergravity and, on the other hand, they can be seen as a good way to test Maldacena conjecture, due to the complete knowledge of correlators of any minimal 2-dimensional CF T ; this led to the publication of a paper [ ]. During the second year of Ph.D., my interest shifted towards the so called DW/QF T duality conjecture [3]: a generalization of AdS/CF T correspondence in which the gravitational backgrounds are no more constant, due to the presence of a non trivial dilaton, and hence the corresponding field theories are no more conformally invariant; in this framework, using some of the techniques developed in the preparation of the preceding paper, in collaboration with Prof. L. Castellani, I worked out new solutions of type IIB supergravity consisting of a warped product of a 3 dimensional DW times a compact coset manifold, together with the conditions needed to preserve some supersymmetry in the compactification [ ]. Then, during the last year of Ph.D., my attention was devoted both to the study of the new supersymmetric backgrounds of supergravity [4], and to the new dualities conjectured between pp waves and a certain sector of CF T, as a limit of AdS/CF T correspondence, according to the original idea by Berenstein, Maldacena and Nastase [6]. The background of [4] are particularly interesting because they give rise to superstring σ model always solvable [5] and hence are the natural playground to test gauge/gravity correspondence in full string theory and not only in low energy supergravity approzimation. In particular I focused on the study of the Penrose limit of a IIB background of the type AdS 3 S 3 S 3 S 1 studying both its geometrical properties, as a self consistent supersymmetric solution of IIB supergravity, its supersymmetry content, examining Killing spinor equations and their deformation after the limit and, from a group theoretical point of view, the basic characteristics of the conjectured dual CF T sector [ ]. During the first year at the Politecnico di Torino, I have collaborated with Prof. R. D Auria, Dr. G. Dall Agata (Humboldt Universität of Berlin) and Dr. S. Vaulà (Politecnico di Torino) on the study of N = 2 D = 4 supergravity implemented with massive tensor multiplets. It is well known that type II string theories compactified on Calabi Yau manifolds down to four dimensions, generate effective theories which can be described by means of N = 2 supergravity coupled to matter fields; these theories naturally contain tensor multiplets but, due to the duality relations which hold in four dimensions between tensors and scalars, one can use only the standard description in terms of hyperscalars. When, in addition to the metric, one gives non trivial expectation values to the other fields of the 10 dimensional theory, the effective 4 dimensional supergravity is deformed, and various fields become massive: among these there are the tensors, which one can no more dualize to scalars. These deformations are usually described by gauged supergravities, but the descriptions previously provided [7] do not include massive tensors, and hence it is difficult to establish their relations to flux compactifications of type II strings: for this reason we have written down the general expression
6 for N = 2 supergravity coupled to tensor multiplets and its gauging [ ]. Then, in collaboration with Dr. S. Vaulà, we have discussed the relation between standard N = 2 supergravity with gauging of translational isometries and N = 2 supergravities coupled to a scalar tensor multiplet with massive tensors and Abelian electric charges. The most general scalar potential we have constructed accomodates both electric and magnetic charges and is manifestly invariant under symplectic electric/magnetic duality transformations, this result can have interesting applications also in cosmology, as recently pointed out by Kallosh [9]. We have moreover shown that a symplectic covariant formulation of N = 2 supergravity can be achieved in the presence of tensor multiplets. Deepening our analysis, we have demonstrated that the formulation of the N = 2 theory as it comes from type IIB flux compactification is equivalent to a non perturbative phase of standard N = 2 supergravity, and that type IIB tadpole cancellation condition comes naturally in four dimensions as a consequence of supersymmetry [ ]. Subsequently, in collaboration with Prof. R. D Auria and Dr. S. Vaulà [ ], we have derived, by means of geometrical methods, the full N = 2 supergravity lagrangian coupled to n V vector multiplets and a tensor multiplet, which contains a symplectic invariant scalar potential, expressed in terms of electric and magnetic charges. As was lready shown in [ ], the appearance of magnetic charges is allowed only if tensor multiplets are present and a suitable Fayet Iliopoulos term is included in the fermion transformation laws. The procedure developed in the quoted reference has moreover been generalized by adding further a Fayet Iliopoulos term which allows the introduction of electric charges, so that the potential and the equations of motion of the theory are symplectic invariant. I have then studied, following the idea of [8], the duality between massive D tensors coupled to vectors, whose masses are given by an arbitrary number of electric and magnetic charges, and (D 1) massive tensors in an arbitrary number 2D of dimensions, thus generalizing the well-known 4 dimensional duality between massive 2 form tensors and massive vectors. Finally I have shown that, dualizing the massive tensors of [ ] to massive vectors and then reinterpreting the latter as massless scalars and vectors via a Stückelberg mechanism, one finds a standard N = 2 Lagrangian with a purely electric gauging, in which all the symplectic sections and the period matrix have been acted on by the symplectic transformation that rotates the electric magnetic charges vector to a purely electric one [ ]. Presently, in collaboration with Prof. R. D Auria and L. Andrianopoli, I am working on Poincaré dualization of the scalars in the vector multiplets in 4 dimensional gauged supergravity, and, together with S. Vaulà, on black holes in supergravity models with tensor fields. List of Scientific Publications L. Castellani, L.
