EMBEDDING l INTO THE SPACE OF ALL OPERATORS ON CERTAIN BANACH SPACES G. ANDROULAKIS, K. BEANLAND, S.J. DILWORTH, F. SANACORY arxiv:math/ v1 [math.fa] 8 Dec 2004 Abstract. We give sufficiet coditios o a Baach space X which esure that l embeds i L(X), the space of all operators o X. We say that a basic sequece (e ) is quasisubsymmetric if for ay two icreasig sequeces (k ) ad (l ) of positive itegers with k l for all, we have that (e k ) domiates (e l ). We prove that if a Baach space X has a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis the l embeds i L(X). 1. Itroductio The famous ope problem of whether there exists a ifiite dimesioal Baach space o which every (liear bouded) operator is a compact perturbatio of a multiple of the idetity, is attributed to S. Baach (see related papers [G], [GM], ad [S]). Oe of the reasos that this problem has attracted a lot of attetio is that if such a space X exists the by the results of [AS] or [L], X provides a positive solutio to the Ivariat Subspace Problem for Baach spaces, amely every operator o X has a o-trivial (i.e. differet tha zero ad the whole space) ivariat subspace. Notice that if a space X satisfies the assumptios of the above problem of Baach ad if i additio X has the Approximatio Property ad separable dual the L(X), the space of all operators o X edowed with the usual operator orm, is separable. Thus if a reflexive Baach space X with a basis satisfies the assumptios of the above problem of Baach the L(X) is separable. I this paper we provide sufficiet coditios o a Baach space X which imply that l embeds i L(X) (which we deote by l L(X) ) hece L(X) is o-separable. The questio whether L(X) is o-separable for every ifiite dimesioal Baach space X, is a well kow ope problem. I Sectio 2 we itroduce the otio of a quasisubsymmetric basic sequece, give examples ad prove our mai results. We say that a basic sequece (e ) is quasisubsymmetric if for ay two icreasig sequeces (k ) ad (l ) of positive itegers with k l for all, we have that (e k ) domiates (e l ). Oe of our mai results (Theorem 2.4) is that if a Baach space X has a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis the l embeds i L(X). Thus a reflexive Baach space X with a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis ca ot satisfy the assumptios of the above problem of Baach. Moreover, i Propositio 2.3 we prove that if a Baach space X has a semiormalized basis which domiates all of its subsequeces the L(X) is o-separable (we do ot kow whether l L(X) i this case). Fially we observe how our results provide sufficiet coditios o a Baach space X which esure that l 1 embeds complemetably ito the space of uclear operators of X Mathematics Subject Classificatio. 2 2 G. Adroulakis, K. Bealad, S.J. Dilworth, F. Saacory I the rest of the sectio we review some kow results about embeddig l ito the space of operators. If X, Y are Baach spaces the deote by L(X, Y ) the space of all operators from X to Y ad K(X, Y ) the space of all compact operators from X to Y. N.J. Kalto [K, proof of Theorem 6 (iii) (ii)] proved that if X is a ifiite dimesioal separable Baach space, Y is ay Baach space the: (a) if c 0 embeds i L(X, Y ) the l embeds i L(X, Y ), (b) if c 0 embeds i Y the l embeds i L(X, Y ). Later M. Feder [F, page 201] oticed that by the result of B. Josefso [J] ad A. Nissezweig [N], the proof of Kalto for the above results works without the assumptio that X is separable. Notice that the result (a) of Kalto as exteded by Feder geeralizes the result of C. Bessaga ad A. Pelczyski [BP] statig that if c 0 embeds i X the l embeds i X. A.E. Tog ad D.R. Wilke [TW] proved that if X, Y are Baach spaces, Y has a ucoditioal basis ad there is a ocompact operator i L(X, Y ) the l embeds i L(X, Y ). The mai focus of the paper of Tog ad Wilke is the well kow ope problem of whether K(X, Y ) L(X, Y ) implies that K(X, Y ) is ot complemeted i L(X, Y ). They prove that the aswer is affirmative if Y has a ucoditioal basis. A.E. Tog [T] proved that if X has a ucoditioal basis, Y is ay Baach space, ad there exists a ocompact operator i L(X, Y ) the c 0 embeds i L(X, Y ). This result was geeralized by Kalto [K] as follows: Let X be a Baach space with a ucoditioal fiite dimesioal expasio of the idetity (i.e. there is a sequece (A ) L(X) of fiite rak operators such that for every x X, x = A x ucoditioally), ad Y be ay Baach space. If there is a ocompact operator i L(X, Y ) the l embeds i L(X, Y ). Moreover, the same assumptios imply that K(X, Y ) is ot complemeted i L(X, Y ). G. Emmauele [E2] proved the followig result: Assume that X ad Y satisfy oe of the followig two assumptios: (i) X is a L space ad Y is a closed subspace of a L 1 space, or (ii) X = C[0, 1] ad Y is a space with cotype 2. If there is a ocompact operator i L(X, Y ) the l embeds i L(X, Y ). Moreover, uder the same assumptios K(X, Y ) is ot complemeted i L(X, Y ). Related results are also i [E1]. 2. Quasisubsymmetric Sequeces I this sectio we itroduce the otios, study, ad give examples of basic quasisubsymmetric sequeces. The mai results are Theorems 2.4 ad 2.9 ad Corollary Let c 00 deote the liear space of fiitely supported sequeces. If (x ) ad (y ) are two basic sequeces i a Baach space ad C > 0, we say that (x ) C-domiates (y ) if a y C a x for all (a ) c 00. We say that (x ) domiates (y ) if (x ) C-domiates (y ) for some C > 0. Defiitio 2.1. A basic sequece (e ) N i some Baach space X is said to be quasisubsymmetric if ad oly if for ay two icreasig sequeces (k ) ad (l ) of positive itegers with k l for all, we have that (e k ) domiates (e l ), i.e. there exists a costat S (k),(l ) > 0 such that a e l S(k),(l ) a e k for all (a ) c 00. While i this defiitio the costat S (k),(l ) depeds o the two subsequeces, the depedece ca be removed if (e ) is semiormalized as the ext result shows.
Embeddig l ito the space of all Operators o Certai Baach Spaces 3 Lemma 2.2. Let (e ) be a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basic sequece. The there exists a costat S > 0 such that for ay two icreasig sequeces (k ) ad (l ) of positive itegers with k l for all, we have that (1) a e l S a e k for all (a ) c 00. Proof. We will assume, via cotradictio, that for all S > 0 there exist (k ) ad (l ) icreasig sequeces of positive itegers with k l for all, ad there exists (a ) c 00 for which (1) is ot valid. Claim: For every S > 0 ad every N N there exists (a ) c 00 with a = 0 for all < N ad there exist two icreasig sequeces (k ) ad (l ) of positive itegers with k l for all, such that a e l > S a e k. To prove this we fix S ad N ad let S = S(1+B)+(N 1)2BD/d, where B is the basis costat of the basic sequece (e ) ad d e D for all. By assumptio there exists (a ) c 00 ad two icreasig sequeces (k ) ad (l ) of positive itegers with k l for all, such that a e l > S a e k. We ca assume without loss of geerality that a e k = 1. By the triagle iequality, (2) a e k 1 + B. Also, =N (3) a 2B/d for all. Furthermore, a e l =N > S N 1 a e l a e l a e k (N 1)2BD/d (by (3)) S(1 + B) + (N 1)2BD/d (N 1)2BD/d S a e k (by (2)) =N which fiishes the proof of the claim. Let N 1 = 1 ad S 1 = 2. By the claim there exists a (a (1) ) c 00 ad two icreasig sequeces (k (1) ) ad (l (1) ) of positive itegers with k (1) l (1) for all, such that a (1) > 2 a (1) = 2. e l (1) e k (1)
4 G. Adroulakis, K. Bealad, S.J. Dilworth, F. Saacory Let N 2 = max(l (1) ) where the maximum is take over all i the support of (a (1) ) ad let S 2 = 4. By the claim there exists a (a (2) ) c 00 with a (2) = 0 for all < N 2 ad two icreasig sequeces (k (2) ) ad (l (2) ) of positive itegers with k (2) l (2) for all, such that a (2) a (2) e l (2) > 4 e k (2) = 4. Cotiue i this maer with N m = max(l (m 1) ) where the maximum is take over all i the support of (a (m 1) ) ad let S m = 2 m. Let a = a (m) /2 m, k = k (m) ad l = l (m) for all [N m, N m+1 ) ad for all m N. Note that a e k coverges ad has orm at most equal to 2. However a e l does ot coverge, cotradictig that (e ) is quasisubsymmetric. The authors do ot kow whether every semiormalized quasisubsymmetric sequece ca be equivaletly reormed so that the costat S i the statemet of Lemma 2.2 ca be take to be equal to 1. If this is true the the proof of Theorem 2.4 ca be slightly simplified. Some examples of spaces with quasisubsymmetric basic sequeces follow. (a) If ay two subsequeces of a basic sequece (e ) are aturally isomorphic the (e ) is quasisubsymmetric; (the examples (b) ad (e) below satisfy this coditio). I particular ay subsymmetric sequece is quasisubsymmetric. (b) There are coditioal quasisubsymmetric sequeces, like the summig basis. (c) The sequece of the biorthogoal fuctioals of the basis of Schreier s 1 space is quasisubsymmetric. We say that a fiite subset E of N is a Schreier set if the cardiality of E is less tha or equal to the miimum of E. For x = (x k ) c 00 we defie the orm x = sup x k. E is Schreier k E Schreier s space is the completio of c 00 equipped with this orm. (d) The sequece of the biorthogoal fuctioals of the basis of Tsirelso s 1 space [FJ] is quasisubsymmetric. There exists a orm satisfyig { } x = max x c0, 1 k 2 sup E j x for all x c 00, where c0 deotes the orm of c 0 ad the supremum is take over all sequeces of sets (E j ) k j=1 such that maxe j < mi E j+1 ad (mi E j ) k j=1 is a Schreier set. Also E j x deotes the atural projectio of x o E j. Tsirelso s space is the completio of c 00 equipped with this orm. (e) The James space has a boudedly complete basis whe the orm is defied as ( pk+1 ) 1 2 1/2 x = sup k=0 i=p k where x = (x i ) ad the supremum is take over all positive itegers ad all sequeces of itegers such that 0 = p 0 < p 1 <... < p +1. Sice the basis is boudedly complete [FG, page 50] c 0 J. Also it is coditioal [FG, pages 49-50]. Obviously 1 A excellet resource for Schreier s space ad Tsirelso s space is [CS]. j=1 x i
Embeddig l ito the space of all Operators o Certai Baach Spaces 5 every two subsequeces of the basis are isometric. Thus our Theorem 2.4 gives a easy way to see l L(J). Oe of our mai results of this sectio is Theorem 2.4 which gives sufficiet coditios o X for l L(X). If, however, we are oly iterested i L(X) beig o separable, the the assumptios of Theorem 2.4 ca be weakeed as the ext result shows. Propositio 2.3. If a Baach space X has a semiormalized basis which domiates its subsequeces the L(X) is o-separable. Proof. Let (e ) be a semiormalized basis for X such that it domiates its subsequeces ad let C be its basis costat. If (k ) is a icreasig sequece i N the defie T (k) : X X by T (k)(x) = e (x)e k. By our assumptio each T (k) is bouded, i.e. T (k) L(X). Let (k ), (m ) be two differet icreasig sequeces i N. The there exists some j N such that k j m j. Thus ( ( ) ( ) ) T (k) T (m) e ej e k e ej e m e j e j We ow preset our first mai result. = 1 e j e k j e mj e k j e mj sup e > if e C sup e > 0. Theorem 2.4. If a Baach space X has a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis the l L(X). I the proof of Theorem 2.4, we will use the followig remark due to Tog ad Wilke [TW, Propositio 4] which is metioed i the itroductio. Remark 2.5. Let (w ) be a ucoditioal basic sequece i a Baach space X, ad assume that there exists a ocompact operator i L(X, [(w )]). The l L(X). Proof of Theorem 2.4. Let (e ) N be a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis for X. Sice (e ) is bouded, by the l 1 theorem of H.P. Rosethal [R] there exists a subsequece (e k ) N which is either equivalet to the uit vector basis of l 1 or it is weakly Cauchy. I the first case, if (e k ) is K-equivalet to the uit vector basis of l 1, observe that for all (a ) c 00, K S a 1 S a e k a e sup e a where S is the costat provided by Lemma 2.2. Thus (e ) is equivalet to the uit vector basis of l 1, hece it is a ucoditioal basis for X ad therefore (e e ) is equivalet to the uit vector basis of c 0 (where for x X ad x X, x x deotes the operator o X defied by (x x)(y) = x (y)x for every y X). I the secod case we assume that (e k ) is weakly Cauchy. Defie the differece sequece (z ) of (e k ) by z = e k2 e k2 1. The (z ) N is weakly ull. Sice (e ) is a semiormalized basic sequece, we have that (z ) is also a semiormalized basic sequece, say 0 < d z D < for all. We claim that there exists a subsequece of (z ) N
6 G. Adroulakis, K. Bealad, S.J. Dilworth, F. Saacory which is ucoditioal. I order to prove this, we use a argumet of A. Bruel ad L. Suchesto [BS]. First by Mazur s theorem [W, Corollary II.A.5] there exist itervals of the atural umbers I 1 < I 2 <... (where I k < I j meas max(i k ) < mi(i j )) ad there exists c i 0 with i I j c i = 1 for all j, such that i I j c i z i 0 as j. By takig a subsequece ad reamig we ca assume without loss of geerality, that (4) i I c i z i < 1 2. Let (a ) c 00. Let F be a fiite subsequece of positive itegers. For N let m := mi I. We will show (5) N\F a z m (S + C d ) a z m for all a c 00 where C is the basis costat of (z ) ad S is the costat provided by Lemma 2.2 for the basic sequece (e ). First ote sice (e ) is quasisubsymmetric that for all sequeces (l ) of positive itegers with l I (for all ), ad for all (a ) c 00 a z l S a z m. Let (a ) c 00. Assume that F = {t 1, t 2,..., t s }. For ay (i 1, i 2,...,i s ) with i I t for = 1,...,s, defie V (i 1, i 2,..., i s ) = s a z m + a t z i N\F Thus if we sum over all (i 1, i 2,...,i s ) with i I t for = 1,...,s, we obtai (6) ci1 c is V (i 1,...,i s ) = a z m + N\F s a t i I t c i z i Apply Lemma 2.2 for k = m if N, l = m if N\F ad l = i if F, to obtai V (i 1,...,i s ) S a z m.
Embeddig l ito the space of all Operators o Certai Baach Spaces 7 Thus (7) Also ote i I t for,...,s c i1 c is V (i 1,..., i s ) (8) a d a z m = Hece by (6), (9) i I t for,...,s i=1 i I t for,...,s i I t for,...,s = S i=1 a z m. c i1 c is V (i 1,..., i s ) c i1 c is S a z m 1 a i z mi a i z mi 2C a i z mi. c i1 c is V (i 1,...,i s ) N\F N\F (by (4) ad (8)) N\F i=1 s a z m a t c i z i i I t a z m 2C d s a i z mi i=1 a z m 2C d a z m. So by (7) ad (9) we obtai (5) which proves that (z m ) is ucoditioal. Let P L(X, [(z m )]) be defied by ( ) P a e = a z m. Notice that P is bouded sice ( ) P a e a 1 e k2m1 + a 2 e k2m2 + + a 1 e k2m1 1 + a 2 e km S a e. 1 2 t Sice P is a ocompact operator ad (z m ) is ucoditioal, by Remark 2.5, we have l L(X). By observig that for a Baach space X, the map from L(X) to L(X ) give by T T, where T is the adjoit operator, is a isometric embeddig, Theorem 2.4 gives the followig corollary.
8 G. Adroulakis, K. Bealad, S.J. Dilworth, F. Saacory Corollary 2.6. If a Baach space X has a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis the l L(X ). The proof of Theorem 2.4 gives the followig two corollaries: Corollary 2.7. If (e ) N is a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basic sequece the either (e ) N is equivalet to the uit vector basis of l 1 or there exists a subsequece (e k ) such that (e k2 e k2 1 ) N is ucoditioal. Corollary 2.8. If (e ) N is a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric weakly ull basic sequece the there exists a subsequece (e k ) of (e ) which is ucoditioal. Theorem 2.9. If a Baach space X has a semiormalized basis (e ) ad the sequece (e ) of the biorthogoal fuctioals is quasisubsymmetric the l L(X). Proof. By results of Kalto [K] metioed i the itroductio, it suffices to show that c 0 L(X). By Corollary 2.7 we separate two cases: If (e ) N is equivalet to the uit vector basis of l 1, we kow that X = [(e ) N ] is isomorphic to c 0. Therefore c 0 L(X). If (e k 2 e k 2 1 ) N is ucoditioal, let K be its ucoditioality costat ad proceed by showig that ((e k 2 e k 2 1 ) e ) N is equivalet to the uit vector basis of c 0 : For (a ) N c 00, a (e k e 2 k ) e ( ) 2 1 = a (e k 2 e k 2 1 ) e = a e (e k e 2 k ) 2k 1 (where e is cosidered i X ) 2 a e (x )(e k 2 e k 2 1 ) (for some x [(e )], x 1) 2K max a e (x )(e k e 2 k ) 2 1 ( 2K max a e (x )e ) k 2 + e (x )e k 2 1 ( 2K max a S (),(k2 ) e (x )e + S (),(k2 1 ) ) e (x )e = 2K(S (),(k2 ) + S (),(k2 1 )) x max a 2K(S (),(k2 ) + S (),(k2 1 )) max a. Verifyig the reverse iequality (with a differet costat) is trivial ad both iequalities together give us that c 0 L(X). Corollary If a Baach space X has a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis (e ) the l L([(e )]), where (e ) is the sequece of the biorthogoal fuctioals to (e ). Proof. Cosider (e ) i X : it is semiormalized, quasisubsymmetric ad biorthogoal to (e ). Therefore by Theorem 2.9 we have l L([(e )]). Fially we make some remarks related to the questio of whether l 1 embeds ito the space of uclear operators of a Baach space X. If X is a Baach space let (N(X), ν( )) deote the space of uclear operators o X, amely
Embeddig l ito the space of all Operators o Certai Baach Spaces 9 N(X) = {T L(X) : T = x y where x X, y X ad ν(t) = if{ x y : The followig remark is well kow: x y < } x y is a represetatio of T }. Remark If X is a Baach space with the Approximatio Property the N(X) is isometric to L(X ). Moreover, if T L(X ) the the actio of T as a fuctioal o N(X) gives the trace of TS, tr (TS ), whe it is applied to S N(X). Ideed, it is show i [Ry, Propositio 4.6 (i) (ii), cf. Corollary 4.8 (a)] that if the Baach space X has the Approximatio Property the N(X) is aturaly isometric to the projective tesor product X ˆ X. Also i [Ry, page 24] it is show that for ay Baach space Y, (Y ˆ Y ) is isometric to L(Y ), where for T L(Y ), the actio of T as a fuctioal o i=1 y i y i Y ˆ Y gives i=1 (Ty i )(y i). By Remark 2.11 we have that for a Baach space X with the Approximatio Property, l 1 embeds complemetably i N(X) if ad oly if l embeds i L(X ). The ext remarks give sufficiet coditios o a Baach space X which esure that l 1 embeds complemetably ito N(X). A similar result is provided by Tog [T, Theorem 1.5] who proved that for a dual Baach space X with a ucoditioal basis, there exists a ocompact operator i L(X ) if ad oly if l 1 embeds i X ˆ X complemetably. Remark Let X be a Baach space which has the Approximatio Property ad assume that l embeds i L(X). The l 1 N(X) complemetably. Proof. Sice the map from L(X) to L(X ) give by T T is a isometric embeddig, we have that l embeds i L(X ). Hece by [BP] ad Remark 2.11 we obtai that l 1 embeds complemetably i N(X). Corollary If a Baach space X has a semiormalized quasisubsymmetric basis the l 1 N(X) complemetably. Proof. Combie Theorem 2.4 ad Remark Remark Let X be a Baach space which has the Approximatio Property ad cotais a ucoditioal basic sequece (e ). Suppose that there exists a ocompact operator i L(X, [(e )]). The l 1 N(X) complemetably. Proof. By Remark 2.5 we have that l embeds i L(X). Now Remark 2.12 fiishes the proof. [AS] [BP] [BS] Refereces Aroszaj, N. ad Smith K.T.
