1 ON THE VOLUME OF DOUBLE TWIST LINK CONE-MANIFOLDS ANH T. TRAN arxiv: v [math.gt] 8 Dec 206 Abstract. We consider the double twist link J2m +,2n + ) which is the twobridge link corresponding to the continued fraction 2m+) /2n+). It is known that J2m+,2n+) has reducible nonabelian SL 2 C)-character variety if and only if m = n. In this paper we give a formula for the volume of hyperbolic cone-manifolds of J2m+,2m+). We also give a formula for the A-polynomial 2-tuple corresponding to the canonical component of the character variety of J2m+,2m+).. Introduction For a hyperbolic link L in S 3, let E L = S 3 \ L be the link exterior and let ρ hol be a holonomy representation of π E L ) into PSL 2 C). Thurston [Th] showed that ρ hol can be deformed into an l-parameter family {ρ α,,α l } of representations to give a corresponding family {E L α,,α l )} of singular complete hyperbolic manifolds, where l is the number of components of L. In this paper we consider only the case where all of α j s are equal to a single parameter α. In which case we also denote E L α,,α l ) by E L α). These α s and E L α) s are called the cone-angles and hyperbolic cone-manifolds of L, respectively. We consider the complete hyperbolic structure on a link complement as the cone-manifold structure with cone-angle zero. It is known that for a two-bridge link L there exists an angle α L [ 2π,π) such that E 3 Lα) is hyperbolic for α 0,α L ), Euclidean for α = α L, and spherical for α α L,π) [HLM, Ko, Po, PW]. A method for computing the volume of hyperbolic cone-manifolds of links was outlined in [HLM], and explicit volume formulas have been known for hyperbolic cone-manifolds of the links 5 2, 62 2, 62 3, 72 3 see [HLMR] and references therein) and of twisted Whitehead links [Tr]. For integers m and n, consider the double twist link J2m +,2n + ) which is the two-bridge link corresponding to the continued fraction 2m+) /2n+) see Figure ). It was shown by Petersen and the author [PT] that J2m+,2n+) has reducible nonabelian SL 2 C)-character variety if and only if m = n. In this paper we are interested in the double twist link L m = J2m +,2m + ), since the canonical component of the character variety of L m has a rather nice form see Remark 3.4). Here a canonical component of the character variety of a hyperbolic link L is a component containing the character of a lift of a holonomy representation of π E L ) to SL 2 C). Let {S j v)} j Z be the sequence of Chebychev polynomials of the second kind defined by S 0 v) =, S v) = v and S j v) = vs j v) S j 2 v) for all integers j. Positive resp. negative) numbers correspond to right-handed resp. left handed) twists. Theorem.. For α 0,α Lm ) we have π VolE Lm α) = log S m z) e iω S m z) S m z) e iω S m z) dω α where z, with ImS m z)s m z)) 0, is a certain root of R Lm e iω/2,z) = 0. Note that the above volume formula for the hyperbolic cone-manifold E Lm α) depends on the choice of a root z, with ImS m z)s m z)) 0, of R Lm e iω/2,z) = 0. In numerical approximations, we choose the root z which gives the maximal volume. It is known that the volume of the k-fold cyclic covering over a hyperbolic link L is k times the volume of the hyperbolic cone-manifold of L with cone-angle 2π/k. As a direct consequence of Theorem., we obtain the following. Corollary.2. The hyperbolic volume of the k-fold cyclic covering over the two-bridge link L m, with k 3, is given by the following formula kvole Lm 2π π k ) = k log S m z) e iω S m z) S m z) e iω S m z) dω where z, with ImS m z)s m z)) 0, is a certain root of R Lm e iω/2,z) = 0. 2π k The A-polynomial of a knot in S 3 was introduced by Cooper, Culler, Gillet, Long and Shalen [CCGLS] inthe90 s. It describes thesl 2 C)-character variety ofthe knot complement as viewed from the boundary torus. The A-polynomial carries a lot of information about the topology of the knot. For example, the sides of the Newton polygon of the A-polynomial of a knot in S 3 give rise to incompressible surfaces in the knot complement [CCGLS]. AgeneralizationoftheA-polynomialtolinksinS 3 wasproposedbyzhang[zh]. Foranl-componentlinkinS 3, Zhangdefinedapolynomiall-tuplelinkinvariantcalledthe A-polynomial l-tuple. The A-polynomial -tuple of a knot is just its A-polynomial. The A-polynomial l-tuple also caries important information about the topology of the link. For example, it can be used to construct concrete examples of hyperbolic link manifolds with non-integral traces [Zh]. The A-polynomial 2-tuple has been computed for a family of two bridge links called twisted Whitehead links [Tr]. In this paper we compute the A-polynomial 2-tuple for the canonical component of the character variety of L m = J2m+,2m+).
