Searching for Beyond Standard Model Physics with Top Quarks at the ATLAS Detector (University of Hong Kong) Topical Mini-Workshop of the New Physics at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, SJTU
Introduction Top quark: heaviest elementary particle discovered so far Produced at the LHC predominantly through strong interactions - high production rate Decays predominantly through t bw Decays before hadronization - access spin information via its decay products Test Standard Model predictions Mass, couplings, and other properties are measured precisely at the LHC Probe to new physics Large couplings to the Higgs boson Special role in the EW symmetry breaking in many new physics scenarios 2
My Research Area Top property: spin correlation and polarization, charge asymmetry. New physics searches via signatures containing multiple top quarks: Heavy Higgs association production, Vector Like quark pair production, 4 top production Anomalous couplings: Flavor Changing Neutral Current decay of top. In these process, the single lepton channel (one top decay leptonically) has higher production rate but suffering big SM background, while the same-sign dilepton (from same-sign tops) channel usually has lower production rate but clean SM background, Similar final states extended to SUSY searches (EW production of chargino and neutralino): same-sign dilepton 3
Motivation (BSM Higgs) In the SM, the Higgs boson mass is not stable due to the quadratically divergent corrections at quantum level (hierarchy problem). Many new physics models propose solutions to this issue: e.g. the Composite Higgs models provide attractive solutions to stabilize the Higgs mass by introducing new strong dynamics. (the light Higgs is a bound state of a strongly interacting sector and a pseudo-goldstone boson of an enlarged symmetry) the Supersymmetry models cancel the quadratically divergence by introducing contributions from super partners of the SM particles. These well motived new physics models typically contain an extended Higgs sector, which introduces additional Higgs fields. e.g. in 2HDM, two CP-even (h and H), one CP-odd (A) and two charged (H±). One of the CP-even Higgs is a SM-like Higgs in the alignment limit. MSSM: 2HDM + SUSY sector 4
Motivation (BSM Higgs) Two strategies: measure the properties of the discovered boson accurately, e.g. couplings Capability for precision measurement of Higgs couplings at LHC is limited! >5% accuracy in the most cases, while the level of 5% needed to distinguish the Higgs boson of typical new physics models from the SM Higgs boson. 5
Motivation (BSM Higgs) search for non-standard decays of h (125 GeV) h(125 GeV) invisible h(125 GeV) aa (the lightest neutral pseudoscalar Higgs bosons) (e.g. ττμμ) lepton-flavour-violating h (125 GeV) eτ, μτ, μe search for additional neutral and charged scalars at the LHC, the major searches for non-sm-like neutral Higgs bosons were in the channels of Zh, ZZ, WW, ττ, hh and charged Higgs bosons in the channels of cs, τν, WZ, and tb 6
neutral scalar A/H in the low to moderate tan β regions the alignment limit of two-higgs-doublet models tan β (ratio of vacuum expectation values of the doublets) mixing parameter α (between two neutral CP even Higgs: h H) 7
Heavy neutral and charged scalars In the alignment limit of two-higgs-doublet models : the H/A tt decay mode is dominant for mh/a > 2mt at low tan β. in addition, the H+ tb decay mode is dominant for mh + > mt + mb for any value of tan β. 8
Heavy neutral scalar A/H tt However, ggf of A/H tt search suffers severe destructive interference with the SM tt SM ttbar productions: 9

Motivation (Vector-like Quarks) These motived new physics models contain sometimes vector-like quarks VLQ are hypothetical spin-1/2 particles with left-handed and right-handed components that transform in the same way under the SM gauge group. Vector-like quarks in many models of New Physics, e.g Universal extra-dimensions Composite Higgs models Little Higgs models VLQ masses are not generated by a Yukawa coupling to the Higgs boson, therefore they are not excluded by existing Higgs measurements, e.g. h γγ. The VLQ quarks produce rich detector signatures, including both chargedcurrent decays (T Wb) and neutral current decays (T Zt and T Ht) 16
VLQ(TT Ht+X) Final states: 1-lepton (electron or muon), multiple jets and b-jets Dominant background: t t +jets Other background: single-top-quark, W/Z+jets, multijet and diboson (WW,WZ,ZZ), ttv and tth, SM 4 tops CERN-EP , JHEP 07 (2018)

Category of Events Top_tagged_jets: large-r (=1.0) jets reclustered from small-r jets with pt > 300 GeV, eta < 2.0, mass> 140 GeV. Higgs_tagged_jets: large-r (=1.0) jets reclustered from small-r jets with pt > 200 GeV, eta < 2.0, 105 GeV<mass< 140 GeV. The pre-selected events are categorised into different regions depending on the jet multiplicity (5 and 6 jets in the 1-lepton channel), b-tagged jet multiplicity (3 and 4 in the 1-lepton channel) and Higgs- and top-tagged jet multiplicity (0, 1 and 2). 23 4 tops The top quark plays a prominent role in many BSM scenarios, often participating in new interactions related to electroweak symmetry breaking, or preferentially coupling to new degrees of freedom. Such BSM scenarios often predict an enhanced rate of events containing four top quarks (tttt) in the final state, compared to the SM production via the strong interaction. 25 Same-Sign Dilepton Channel dominant background : fakes, else charge flipped, diboson 25
Conclusions The main challenges of the single lepton channel including the modelling of the dominant background SM ttbar pair plus jets production, and boosted objects identification the total systematic uncertainty of the background normalisation in the highest-sensitivity search region in the 1-lepton channel is with the largest contributions originating from uncertainties in tt +HF modelling and flavour tagging efficiencies (b, c, and light). when top is highly boosted, the isolation requirement of leptons from top decay need to be optimized. The main challenges of the same sign dilepton channel is to understand fake leptons from jets and from misidentification of the electron charge (charge-flip), which are dominant backgrounds. Currently the systematics of fake background is dominant, which affects the sensitivities to signals. Developing the Boosted Decision Trees and Neural Network analyses for improving sensitivity. 26
