A horizontal beam AB is freely supported at A and B, 8 m span, and carries a UDL of 15 kn/m (including its own weight). A clockwise moment of 160 kn-m is applied to the beam at a point C, 3 m from the left hand support A. Calculate the slope of the beam at C, if EI=40 MN-m a) Deduce the longitudinal stress equation for a thin spherical shell subjected to an internal pressure of intensity p, with a thickness t and diameter d. b) A cylindrical shell is 3 m long, 1 meter internal diameter and 15 mm metal thickness. Calculate the maximum intensity of shear stress induced and also the changes in the dimensions of the shell, if it is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5 N/mm 2. Take E = 2.05x10 5 N/mm 2, 1/m = An element is subjected to tensile stresses of 60 N/mm 2 and 20 N/mm 2 acting on two perpendicular planes and is also accompanied by shear stress of 20 N/mm 2 on these planes. Draw the Mohr s circle of stresses and determine the magnitudes and directions of principal stresses and also the greatest shear stress. 4. A leaf spring carries a central load of 3000 N. The leaf spring has to be made of 10 steel plates 5 cm wide and 6 mm thick. If the bending stress is limited to 150 N/mm 2 determine: (i) length of the spring and (ii) deflection at the centre of the spring. Take E = 2x10 5 N/mm 2. 1 of 2

A propped cantilever ABC of span 5m is fixed at A and propped at the free end B.C.is located at a distance of 3 m from the fixed end A. It carries a uniformly distributed load of 14kN/m intensity in the portion AB of the span. Determine the prop reaction at B and also draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams indicating salient values. 2. A fixed beam of span 14m carries a central clock wise couple of 20KN-m at the mid span. Calculate the fixed end moments for the beam. Also, draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam. 3. A two span continuous beam ABC rests on simple supports at A, B and C. All the three supports are at same level. The span AB=5m and span BC=4m. The span AB carries a uniformly distributed load of 12 kn/m and span BC carries a central point load of 22 kn. EI is constant for the whole beam. Find the moments and reactions at all the supports and draw the bending moment diagram using Clapeyorn's theorem of three moments. 4. A two span continuous beam ABC is fixed at A and simply supported at C. It is continuous over support B. The span AB=4m and span BC=7m. The span AB carries a UDL of 14 KN/m and span BC carries a central point load of 12KN. EI is constant for the whole beam. Find the support moment at B and draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams using slope-deflection method. 5. A simple supported beam of variable moment of inertia supports a uniformly distributed load of w kn/m throughout its span length l as shown in figure. Calculate the central deflection, using Strain Energy method. 6. A single rolling load of 27 kn rolls over a simply supported girder of 20 metre span. Draw the diagrams for the maximum shear force and maximum bending moment in the girder. 1 of 2
