Abstract. In this paper, we consider (n-1, 1)-type conjugate boundary value problem for coupled systems of the nonlinear fractional differential equation D α + u + λf(t, v) =, < t < 1, λ >, D α +v + λg(t, u) =, u (i) () = v (i) () =, i n, u(1) = v(1) =, where λ is a parameter, α (n 1, n] is a real number and n 3, and D α + is the Riemann-Liouville s fractional derivative, and f, g are continuous and semipositone. We give properties of Green s function of the boundary value problem, and derive an interval on λ such that for any λ lying in this interval, the semipositone boundary value problem has multiple positive solutions. Key words. Riemann-Liouville s fractional derivative; fractional differential equation; boundary value problem; positive solution; fractional Green s function; fixed-point theorem. MR() Subject Classifications: 34B15 1 Introduction We consider the (n-1, 1)-type conjugate boundary value problem for nonlinear fractional differential equation involving Riemann-Liouville s derivative D α + u + λf(t, v) =, < t < 1, λ >, D α + v + λg(t, u) =, u (i) () = v (i) (1.1) () =, i n, u(1) = v(1) =, where λ is a parameter, α (n 1, n] is a real number, n 3, D α + is the Riemann-Liouville s fractional derivative, and f, g are sign-changing continuous functions. As far as we know, there are few papers which deal with the boundary value problem for nonlinear fractional differential equation. Because of fractional differential equation s modeling capabilities in engineering, science, economics, and other fields, the last few decades has resulted in a rapid development of the theory of fractional differential equations, see [1]-[7] for a good overview. Within this development, a fair amount of the theory has been devoted to initial and boundary value problems problems (see [9]-[]). In most papers, the definition of fractional derivative is the Riemann-Liouville s fractional derivative or the Caputo s fractional derivative. For details, see the references. 1The work is supported by Natural Science Foundation of Heilongjiang Province of China (No. A11) and Scientific Research Fund of Heilongjiang Provincial Education Department (No ). 2 In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of positive solution of the semipositone boundary value problems (1.1) for a sufficiently small λ > where f, g may change sign. Our analysis relies on nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type and Krasnosel skii s fixed-point theorems. Preliminaries For completeness, in this section, we will demonstrate and study the definitions and some fundamental facts of Riemann-Liouville s derivatives of fractional order which can been founded in [3]. Definition.1 [3] The integral I+ α f(x) = 1 x f(t) dt, x >, Γ(α) (x t) 1 α where α >, is called Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of order α. Definition. [3] For a function f(x) given in the interval [, ), the expression D α + f(x) = 1 Γ(n α) ( d dx )n x f(t) dt, (x t) α n+1 where n = [α] + 1, [α] denotes the integer part of number α, is called the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative of order s. From the definition of the Riemann-Liouville derivative, we can obtain the statement. As examples, for µ > 1, we have D α + xµ = Γ(1 + µ) Γ(1 + µ α) xµ α giving in particular D α + xα m, m = i,, 3,, N, where N is the smallest integer greater than or equal to α. Lemma.1 Let α > ; then the differential equation D α + u(t) = has solutions u(t) = c 1 t α 1 + c t α + + c n t α n, c i R, i = 1,,..., n, as unique solutions, where n is the smallest integer greater than or equal to α. As D α + Iα + u = u. From the lemma.1, we deduce the following statement. Lemma. Let α >, then I α +D α +u(t) = u(t) + c 1 t α 1 + c t α + + c n t α n, for some c i R, i = 1,,..., n, n is the smallest integer greater than or equal to α. Lemma.3 [16] Let h(t) C[, 1] be a given function, then the boundary-value problem D α + u(t) + h(t) =, < t < 1, n 1 < α n, u (i) () =, i n, u(1) = (.1) has a unique solution where u(t) = G(t, s)h(s)ds, (.) { G(t, s) = 1 t α 1 (1 s) α 1 (t s) α 1, s t 1, Γ(α) t α 1 (1 s) α 1, t s 1. Here G(t, s) is called the Green s function for the boundary value problem (.1). (.3) EJQTDE, 11 No. 13, p.
Lemma.4 [16] The Green s function G(t, s) defined by (.3) has the following properties: (R1) G(t, s) = G(1 s, 1 t), for t, s [, 1], (R) Γ(α)k(t)q(s) G(t, s) (α 1)q(s), for t, s [, 1], (R3) Γ(α)k(t)q(s) G(t, s) (α 1)k(t), for t, s [, 1], where k(t) = tα 1 (1 t), q(s) = Γ(α) s(1 s)α 1. (.4) Γ(α) The following a nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type and Krasnosel skii s fixed-point theorems, will play major role in our next analysis. Theorem.5 [1] Let X be a Banach space with Ω X be closed and convex. Assume U is a relatively open subsets of Ω with U, and let S : U Ω be a compact, continuous map. Then either 1. S has a fixed point in U, or. there exists u U and ν (, 1), with u = νsu. Theorem.6 [8] Let X be a Banach space, and let P X be a cone in X. Assume Ω 1, Ω are bounded open subsets of X with Ω 1 Ω 1 Ω, and let S : P P be a completely continuous operator such that, either 1. Sw w, w P Ω 1, Sw w, w P Ω, or. Sw w, w P Ω 1, Sw w w P Ω. Then S has a fixed point in P (Ω \Ω 1 ). 3 Main Results We make the following assumption: (H 1 ) f(t, ), g(t, ) C([, 1] [, + ), (, + )), moreover there exists a function e(t) L 1 ((, 1), (, + )) such that f(t, ) e(t) and g(t, ) e(t), for any t (, 1), [, + ). (H 1 ) f(t, ), g(t, ) C((, 1) [, + ), (, + )), f, g may be singular at t =, 1, moreover there exists a function e(t) L 1 ([, 1], (, + )) such that f(t, ) e(t) and g(t, ) e(t), for any t (, 1), [, + ). (H ) f(t, ) > for t [, 1]; there exist M >, σ > such that lim sup g(t,) < M for t [, 1] and g(t, ) > for (t, ) [, 1] (, σ]. (H 3 ) There exists [, θ ] (, 1) such that lim inf + t [,θ ] f(t,) = + and lim inf + t [,θ ] g(t,) = +. (H 4 ) q(s)e(s)ds < +, q(s)f(s, )ds < + and q(s)g(s, )ds < + for any [, m], m > is any constant. In fact, we only consider the boundary value problem D α +x = λ(f(t, [y(t) w(t)] ) + e(t)), t (, 1), λ >, D α + y = λ(g(t, [x(t) w(t)] ) + e(t)), t (, 1), x (i) () = y (i) () =, i n, x(1) = y(1) =, (3.1) where (t) = { (t), (t) ;, (t) <. 4 and w(t) = λ G(t, s)e(s)ds, which is the solution of the boundary value problem D α + w = λe(t), t (, 1), w (i) () =, i n, w(1) =. We will show there exists a solution (x, y) for the boundary value problem (3.1) with x(t) w(t) and y(t) w(t) for t [, 1]. If this is true, then u(t) = x(t) w(t) and v(t) = y(t) w(t) is a nonnegative solution (positive on (, 1)) of the boundary value problem (1.1). Since for any t (, 1), D α +x = D α +u + ( D α +w) = λ[f(t, v) + e(t)], D α + y = Dα + v + ( Dα + w) = λ[g(t, u) + e(t)], we have D α +u = λf(t, v) and D α +v = λg(t, u). As a result, we will concentrate our study on the boundary value problem (3.1). We note that (3.1) is equal to { x(t) = λ G(t, s)(f(s, [y(s) w(s)] ) + e(s))ds y(t) = λ G(t, s)(g(s, [x(s) w(s)] ) + e(s))ds. (3.) From (3.) we have max t 1 x(t) = λ G(t, s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds. (3.3) For our constructions, we shall consider the Banach space E = C[, 1] equipped with standard norm x = x(t), x X. We define a cone P by Define an integral operator T : P X by P = {x X x(t) tα 1 (1 t) x, t [, 1], α (n 1, n], n 3}. p Tx(t) = λ G(t, s)(f(s, [λ Notice, from Lemma.3, we have Tx(t) on [, 1] for x P and G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds. Tx(t) = λ G(t, s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds λ (α 1)q(s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds, then Tx λ (α 1)q(s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds. On the other hand, we have Tx(t) = λ G(t, s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds tα 1 (1 t) α 1 λ (α 1)q(s)(f(s, [λ tα 1 (1 t) α 1 Tx. G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds Thus, T(P) P. In addition, standard arguments show that T is a compact, completely continuous operator. Theorem 3.1 Suppose that (H 1 ) and (H ) hold. Then there exists a constant λ > such that, for any < λ λ, the boundary value problem (1.1) has at least one positive solution. EJQTDE, 11 No. 13, p. 4
Proof Fix δ (, 1). From (H ), let < ε < min{1, σ} be such that f(t, ) δf(t, ), g(t, ) M, for t 1, ε. (3.4) and g(t, ) >, for t 1, < ε. Let U = {x P : x < R }, x U and ν (, 1) be such that x = νt(x), we claim that x R. In fact, for x U and x R, we have λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ λ (α 1)q(τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ λ (α 1)q(τ)M[x(τ) w(τ)] dτ λ (α 1)q(τ)MR dτ λm (α 1)q(τ)dτR R. (3.5) It follows that that is x(t) = νtx(t) νλ (α 1)q(s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds λ (α 1)q(s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds λ (α 1)q(s) max [f(s, ) + e(s)]ds s 1; R λ (α 1)q(s)f(R )ds λcf(r ), f(r ) R 1 cλ > 1 cλ = f(r ) R, which implies that x R. By the nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type, T has a fixed point x U. Moreover, combing (3.4), (3.5) and the fact that R < ε, we obtain x(t) = λ G(t, s)(f(s, [λ G(s, τ)g(τ, [x(τ) w(τ)] )dτ] ) + e(s))ds λ G(t, s)[δf(s, ) + e(s)]ds λ[δ G(t, s)f(s, )ds + G(t, s)e(s)ds] > λ G(t, s)e(s)ds = w(t) for t (, 1). Then T has a positive fixed point x and x R < 1. EJQTDE, 11 No. 13, p. 5
On the other hand, from (3.) and w < x R ε σ, we have g(s, x(s) w(s)) >. 8 and Tx x, x P Ω. Condition () of Krasnoesel skii s fixed-point theorem is satisfied. So T has a fixed point x with r R 1 < x < R. Since r < R 1 < x, x(t) w(t) 1 α 1 tα 1 (1 t) x λ G(t, s)e(s)ds 1 α 1 tα 1 (1 t) x α 1 Γ(α) tα 1 (1 t)λ e(s)ds 1 α 1 tα 1 (1 t) x t α 1 (1 t)λr 1 α 1 tα 1 r t α 1 (1 t)λr ( 1 α 1 λ)tα 1 (1 t)r >, t (, 1). On the other hand, according to the choice of λ and R 1, we have This implies x(s) w(s) x(s) (α 1)x(s) x λr x(s) (α 1)x(s) R 1 λr (1 λ(α 1)r R 1 )x(s) 1 x(s) 1 (α 1) sα 1 (1 s) x 1 (α 1) γr 1 R 1 1, t [, θ ]. g(s, [x(s) w(s)] ) N R 1 1, s [, θ ]. This together with the choice of N, for x R 1, we have λ G(t, s)g(s, [x(s) w(s)] )ds = λ( G(t, s)(g(s, [x(s) w(s)] ) + e(s))ds G(s, s)e(s)ds) λt α 1 (1 t)( θ q(s)(g(s, [x(s) w(s)] ) + e(s))ds α 1 1 Γ(α) e(s)ds) λγ( θ q(s)g(s, [x(s) w(s)] )ds r) λγ( θ q(s)n R 1 1 ds r) λγ(n R 1 1 ρ r) λγ(ρn r)r 1 1 >, t [, 1]. Thus, (x, y) is positive solution (x, y) of the boundary value problem (3.1) with x(t) w(t) and y(t) w(t) for t [, 1]. Let u(t) = x(t) w(t) > and v(t) = y(t) w(t) >, then (u, v) is a nonnegative solution (positive on (, 1)) of the boundary value problem (1.1). Since condition (H 1 ) implies conditions (H 1 ) and (H 4), then from proof of Theorem 3.1 and 3., we immediately have the following theorem: Theorem 3.3 Suppose that (H 1 )-(H 3 ) hold. Then the boundary value problem (1.1) has at least two positive solutions for λ > sufficiently small. In fact, let < λ < min{λ, λ }, then the boundary value problem (1.1) has at least two positive solutions. EJQTDE, 11 No. 13, p. 8
4 Example To illustrate the usefulness of the results, we give some examples. Example 4.1 Consider the boundary value problem D α +u = λ(v α 1 + cos(πv)), t (, 1), λ >, (t t ) 1 D α + v = λ(uβ 1 + sin(πu)), (t t ) 1 u (i) () = v (i) () =, i n, u(1) = v(1) =, (4.1) where a > 1. Then, if λ > is sufficiently small, (4.1) has a positive solutions (u, v) with u >, v > for t (, 1). To see this we will apply Theorem 3. with Clearly, for t (, 1), f(t, ) = α 1 + (t t ) 1 e(t) =. (t t ) 1 cos(π), g(t, ) = β + 1 (t t ) 1 sin(π), f(t, ) + e(t) α + 1 >, g(t, ) + e(t) β + 1 >, for t (, 1); f(t,) g(t,) lim inf + = +, lim inf + = +, for t [, θ ] (, 1), for u >. Namely (H 1 ) and (H 3)-(H 4 ) hold. From r = (m + 4 C ρ ) β 1 and N = 4 C ρ. Then, we have (s s ) 1 ds = π, let [, θ ] (, 1), R 1 = 17 + ( C γ ) + ( ) ( ) { ( ) } R 1 > 17 + > 1 + r + > max 1, r,, N > r C γ C γ C γ C ρ. When > R 1 1 > (m + 4 C ρ ) 1 β 1, we have g(t, ) > β 1 m > 4 C ρ for t [, θ ], where m = We have max { }. So < t θ <1 (t t ) 1 g(t, ) > N for t [, θ ], > R 1 1. R = pq(τ)( max R 1 { β + 1 (τ τ ) 1 sin(π)} + e(τ))dτ (R β 1 + π) pq(τ)dτ and Let pq(s)( max R {α + 1 (s s ) 1 cos(π)} + e(s))ds (R α + π) pq(s)ds. λ = min{1, R 1 [(R α + 3) pq(s)ds] 1, C R 1 r }. Now, if λ < λ, Theorem 3. guarantees that (4.1) has a positive solutions u with u. EJQTDE, 11 No. 13, p. 9
Example 4. Consider the boundary value problem D α + u = λ(v α)(v β), t (, 1), λ >, D α +v = λu(u a)(u b), u (i) () = v (i) () =, i n, u(1) = v(1) =, (4.) where β > α >, b > a >. Then, if λ > is sufficiently small, (4.) has two solutions (u 1, v 1 ), (u, v ) with u i (t) >, v i (t) > for t (, 1), i = 1,. To see this we will apply Theorem 3.3 with f(t, ) = (α + β) + αβ and g(t, ) = 3 (a + b) + ab for. Clearly, there exists a constant e(t) = M > such that and where M = (a + 1)(b + 1). f(t, ) + e(t) > 1, g(t, ) + e(t) > g(t, ) f(t, ) = αβ >, g(t, ) > for < < a, lim = ab < M, Since g(t, ) increase to for t 1, (a + b) (a + b ) 1, f(t, ) decrease to for t 1, α. Let δ = α 4β, ε = 1 4 min{1, α, (a + b) (a + b ) 1 } and c = pq(s)ds. We have Namely (H 1 )-(H ) hold. We choose f(t, ) δf(t, ), < g(t, ) M, for t 1, ε. 1 1 λ = min{, }. (4.3) αβ + M Mc Now, if λ < λ, Theorem 3.1 guarantees that (4.) has a positive solutions (u 1, v 1 ) with u On the other hand, f(t,) g(t,) lim inf + = +, lim inf + = + for t (, 1). Namely (H 1 )-(H 4 ) hold and r = M. Next, let [, θ ] (, 1), R 1 > 1 + M + ( C γ ) such that g(t, ) > N for > R 1 1 and N = M+1 C γ. We have and R = λ = min{1, R 1 [ pq(τ)( max R 1 {( a)( b)} + M )dτ pq(s)( max R {( α)( β)} + M )ds] 1, C R 1 r }. Now, if < λ < λ, Theorem 3. guarantees that (4.) has a positive solutions (u, v ) with u 1. Since all the conditions of Theorem 3.3 are satisfied, if λ < min{λ, λ }, Theorem 3.3 guarantees that (4.) has two solutions u i with u i (t) > for t (, 1), i = 1,. Example 4.3 Consider the boundary value problem D α + u = λ(vα + cos(πv)), t (, 1), λ >, D α +v = λ(u β + sin(πu)), u (i) () = v (i) () =, i n, u(1) = v(1) =, (4.4) EJQTDE, 11 No. 13, p. 1
where α, β > 1. Then, if λ > is sufficiently small, (4.4) has two solutions (u 1, v 1 ), (u, v ) with u i (t) >, v i (t) > for t (, 1), i = 1,. To see this we will apply Theorem 3.3 with Clearly, for t (, 1), where M = π + 1. f(t, ) = α (t) + cos(π), g(t, ) = β + sin(π), e(t) =. f(t, ) + e(t) α + 1 >, g(t, ) + e(t) β + 1 >, f(t, ) = 1 >, g(t, ) > for < < 1, f(t,) lim inf + = +, lim sup g(t,) g(t,) = π < M, lim inf + = +, Namely (H 1 )-(H 4 ) hold. Let δ = 1, ε = 1 8 and c = pq(s)ds. We have c( max x ε ε f(t, x) + ) Let λ = min{ 1 9c, 1 ε Mc }. Now, if < λ < λ then < λ < positive solutions (u 1, v 1 ) with u c( + 3) = 1 9c. (4.5) c( max x ε f(t,x)+), Theorem 3.1 guarantees that (4.4) has a Next, from r = e(s)ds =, let [, θ ] (, 1), R 1 = 5 + ( C γ ) + (1 + 3 C ρ ) β 1 and N = 3 C ρ. Then, we have R 1 > 5 + ( C γ ) > 1 + r + ( C γ ) > max{1, r, ( C γ ) }, N > r C ρ. When > R 1 1 > (1 + 3 C ρ ) 1 β 1, we have g(t, ) > β 1 1 > 3 C ρ. So, we have R = g(t, ) > N for > R 1 1. pq(τ)( max { β + sin(π)} + e(τ))dτ (R β 1 + 3) pq(τ)dτ R 1 and Let pq(s)( max R {α + cos(π)} + M )ds (R α + 3) λ = min{1, R 1 [(R α + 3) pq(s)ds] 1, C R 1 r }. pq(s)ds. Now, if < λ < λ then < λ < R 1 ( pq(s)( max R {α + cos(π)} + M )ds) 1, Theorem 3. guarantees that (4.4) has a positive solutions (u, v ) with u 1. So, if λ < min{λ, λ }, Theorem 3.3 guarantees that (4.4) has two solutions (u 1, v 1 ) and (u, v ) with u i, v i > for t (, 1), i = 1,.
