W e are already seeing some great learning in the classrooms. In just the few short weeks we have been in school, we have seen students engaged in purposeful writing, developing reading stamina, and strategically solving math problems. Students have also been involved in a number of assessments to help us precisely know their academic needs and skill levels. Teachers are already working with students individually and in small groups. Fort Zumwalt teachers are implementing a new reading program called ReadyGEN. I am excited about this program as it has a strong reading and writing connection, will help students build phonic skills while expanding their vocabulary, and will place a greater emphasis on grammar than past programs. Students will have an average of 60 minutes of reading instruction, 50 minutes of writing, and 90 minutes of math each day. Our PTC is hard at work as well. They have planned a number of events to take place throughout this year. Our fall fundraiser is just around the corner. W e have chosen not to sell items this year for a fall fundraiser. Instead, we are doing a fundraiser that better fits the mission of PTC, which is to bring families together. The Color Run is intended to serve as our fund raiser while also providing a time for the Dardenne family to be together. Our hope is this fundraiser will generate enough money to help us from asking your child to sell items. A lot of information has gone home, but please contact the school if you have any questions about the Color Run. It?s completely new so we understand there are likely a lot of questions. 3 A M essage f r om Dar den n e's In st r u ct ion al Coach es Eigh t St an dar ds f or M at h em at ical Pr act ice Over the next 8 newsletters, I will be highlighting the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice. In today?s environment, there are?habits of mind?that students need to develop and use when they employ math strategies, talk about the math they are learning, and solve problems. These practices help them learn the content and describe how students should be able to use the mathematics they learn in the world. These skills are important to employers who want to hire people who can solve problems and make sense of things. 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. There are several important behaviors to look for to meet this standard. Students should not give up if a problem is unfamiliar or hard! They search their memories for a similar problem or for what they already learned that might help. They explain the problem to themselves and try to visualize it. If one strategy does not work, they try another. Questions parents can ask their child to help him or her develop this skill: - W hat are you solving for in the problem? - Can you think of a problem that you have solved before that is like this one? - How will you go about solving the problem?w hat is your plan? - Are you making progress toward solving the problem?should you try a different plan? - How can you check your answer?can you check using a different method? Reading helps children become better writers, and writing helps children become better readers. Through writing, young children develop their understanding that words are made up of sounds. They practice their phonics skills by linking sounds together to construct words. Older students apply their knowledge of language and text structure through writing practice. Here are some ideas for writing at home: - W rite letters to family and friends W rite stories about your favorite things Keep a journal Create your own comic Use a variety of writing tools such as gel pens, markers, crayons, and pencils Create a shopping list Play word games, such as Hangman Sincerely, Mrs. Henderson (ELA coach)
