1 Ch.1 Study Guide Outline Study the Review that is posted on the website. Make a note card to use for the test. 1. What is science and physics? 2. What are the 4 steps of the Scientific Method as described by Mr. Martin? 3. Be able to identify a hypothesis. 4. Understand scientific notation and how to properly use it. 5. Know the rules for significant figures and be able to identify the number of significant figures in a measurement. 6. Understand the importance of graphing and be able to find the relationship between two measured properties by graphing. 7. Know precision & accuracy. 8. Know what error is, and what error is not. HINT: Human error is not laboratory error. 9. Know how to convert from one SI unit to another. HINT: Look at the SI Table that is shared in Google Docs. 10. Study the Ch. 1 Quiz.

Know how to take velocity vectors and find displacement vectors?. 4. Know how to use our equations for figure out what is happening for a given situation. 5. Know how to use our equations to analyze and predict what will happen in a free fall situation. Be able to use your knowledge of free fall to analyze objects that fall off cliffs, tables, etc. 6. Review the physics of throwing an object up and letting it fall back down. (Hint: Hidden Givens) Be able to use your knowledge of objects thrown up and falling down to analyze objects that are launched at an angle -- launched projectiles. 7. Know how to find the final velocity (V f ) in unit vector notation & magnitude direction notation. 8. Know how to find the initial vertical velocity (V iy ) and initial horizontal velocity (V ix ). 9. Review the symmetry of projectiles equations. 10. Study the Ch. 3 Quiz. 11. Review the posted Group Practices.

What is inertia and what do we use as a measure of inertia? 3. Know Newton s 3 Laws and how to apply them. 4. In physics, what does equilibrium mean? 5. Know how to calculate the horizontal (F_x) and vertical (F_y) components of a force at an angle. 6. Know how to calculate the Net Force on an object when there are multiple forces acting on an object. 7. Know how to use older equations to calculate the acceleration on an object in order to use it to find the Net Force. 8. Know how calculate weight and normal force, and how to use your knowledge of physics to analyze a pushed object, including an object on an inclined plane. 9. Understand the concepts and differences between static friction and kinetic friction. 10. Know how to use the friction equations to solve for the frictional forces on a pushed/pulled object. 11. Review the Ch. 4 and Ch. 5 Quizzes. 12. Review the Group Practice, Extended Practice, and Review which are posted on GoogleDocs.

Know the rules for conductors in electrostatic equilibrium. 11. Know how to calculate electric potential energy. 12. Know how to calculate potential difference. Understand how charges move with regards to potential differences. 13. Know how to calculate the capacitance of a capacitor and the stored electric potential energy.

Know how to determine the magnetic force on a moving charged particle in a magnetic field using the right hand rule, and how to calculate it. 6. Know the path a charged particle moving in a perpendicular magnetic field will take. 8. Know how a speaker and a motor works. 9. Know what magnetic flux is, the 4 ways to change magnetic flux, and how to calculate the change in magnetic flux. 10. Know what electromagnetic induction is and which direction current will be induced in a wire loop experiencing a changing magnetic flux. 11. Know how to use Faraday s Law to calculate the induced emf in a wire loop experiencing a changing magnetic flux. 12. Know how to use the Transformer equation to calculate the voltage across the secondary of a step-up or step-down transformer and what the maximum current can be in the secondary of the transformer.
