In 1994, Nort h w e s t e rn Memorial began one of the largest privatelyfunded health-care construction p rojects in the country: a 2.1 million s q u a re-foot medical center on its downtown Chicago campus. The building, scheduled for completion in 1999, has three components: a s t o ry replacement hospital for inpatient care, a 22-story outpatient facility with space for ambulatory c a re and physicians offices, and a s h a red 8-story base for diagnostic and therapeutic services. Designing a new facility from the ground up gave Nort h w e s t e rn Memorial an unprecedented o p p o rtunity to install a cabling Ron DiVitto of SunStrand Electric Company terminating cable. i n f r a s t ru c t u re capable of meeting t o d a y s needs while providing plenty of headroom for tomorro w s t e c h n o l o g i e s. A premier hospital should have a first-class cabling system, said Paul B a rry, Director of Networking and Communications for Nort h w e s t e rn Memorial. The role of Bell Laboratories, with its history of innovation and its understanding of technology and the marketplace, also influenced B a rry s decision. He visited Bell Labs in New Jersey where SYSTIMAX products are developed and came away convinced that not all copper cable is of the same quality, even though it may meet Category 5 standards. At Bell Labs, I was able to meet the people who spend their day researching and improving the product. The innovation and technical expertise is truly impressive, he said. For a Category 5 or higher system to deliver peak perf o rmance, every component must be of the highest q u a l i t y. Barry was pleased to learn that the cost diff e rential between a SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED Solution and ord i n a ry wiring was not as g reat as he expected. In a hospital e n v i ronment, patient care depends on system reliability and fast response times, he explained. The cost diff e rence is small c o m p a red to the need. H i g h - D e n s i t y Installation Minimizes Need for Future C o n s t ru c t i o n A unique feature of the N o rt h w e s t e rn Memorial Hospital installation is its size. More than 24,000 cable drops were installed by SunStrand Electric Company of Elgin, Illinois, the Lucent Technologies Value-Added Reseller which designed and implemented the system. This density saturation will minimize the need to add, move or re a rrange termination points. This flexibility has an economic impact on the hospital in the future. When the hospital is operational, work on the cabling system has to be p e rf o rmed at off hours to pre v e n t inconvenience to patients and h e a l t h c a re personnel, said Paul B a rry. Jim Sauvageau, Division Manager for SunStrand said, attention to detail during cable installation, routing and placement, as well as termination and labeling was critical to establishing a solid i n f r a s t ru c t u re. This foundation p rovides ultimate flexibility for the hospital by minimizing the impact of changes that will be re q u i red to accommodate future high speed applications. After seeing the installation, Chaz MacKenzie of Bell Labs re p o rted, I was quite i m p ressed with the overall quality and neatness of the riser and horizontal cable runs. It s one of the

4 enter best installation jobs I ve seen in recent years, and also one of the m o re difficult projects I ve encount e red. According to Sauvageau, L u c e n t s GigaSPEED installation s t a n d a rds are consistent with S u n S t r a n d s installation philosophy which ensures the best overall p e rf o rm a n c e. To source the large quantity of GigaSPEED cables and other pro d- ucts re q u i red for this installation, SunStrand worked closely with Power & Telephone Supply, an international distributor headquart e red in Memphis, Tennessee. The size of the order was a challenge, especially because the GigaSPEED pro d u c t line was new when the installation began, said Chuck Boudreau, the company s district manager in Minneapolis. We worked closely with SunStrand to plan in advance and to monitor the flow of pro d u c t s so that construction could proceed without delays. SYSTIMAX Installation S u p p o rts High-Speed Data and Image Tr a n s m i s s i o n Almost every area of the hospital, f rom patient care to administration and re s e a rch, will depend on the SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED Solution for reliable, high-speed data networking. Applications that will run over the combined copper and fiber infras t ru c t u re include clinical systems to transmit patient data and test re s u l t s ; scheduling systems for optimal utilization of facilities for surg e ry, r a d i o l o g y, and other pro c e d u res; and ancillary systems such as . The GigaSPEED Solution will also give re s e a rchers fast access to the I n t e rnet and other re s o u rces, as well as providing an infrastru c t u re for administering the hospital s buildingmanagement system, designed by Johnson Controls, Inc., of Milwaukee, Wi s c o n s i n. F u t u re applications include a Picture A rchive Communication (PAC) system for radiology. With this system in place, thousands of images can be digitized and stored in a computer, accessed when needed, and displayed on a high-resolution workstation. Because the PAC system re q u i re s t remendous storage and bandwidth in order to deliver high-quality images in reasonable time, it will run

5 on a separate network fro m other hospital systems. That d o e s n t pose a problem for the SYSTIMAX infrastru c t u re, which was designed to accommodate the increased speed and capacity of tomorro w s technologies. The big benefit is that images can be moved to wherever they a re needed, placing inform a t i o n in the hands of the physician in a timely manner, said B a rry. The result will be faster, better diagnosis without the e n v i ronmental impact of the film-development process or manual process of filing and a rchiving film. New technologies like the PA C system will help Nort h w e s t e rn Memorial Hospital fulfill its mission and maintain its leadership position as one of the top academic medical centers in the world. When our GigaSPEED installation is complete, I won t have to wait for physicians to ask me whether we have the infrastru c t u re to handle a new system or t e c h n o l o g y, Barry summed up. Instead, we can act as an enabler for those new applications, providing value to our patients and care g i v e r s, without adding significant cost.
