arxiv:93.27v [math.dg] 25 Mar 29 A GAP THEOREM FOR α-harmonic MAPS BETWEEN TWO-SPHERES TOBIAS LAMM, ANDREA MALCHIODI, AND MARIO MICALLEF Abstract. In this paper we consider approximations à la Sacks-Uhlenbeck of the harmonic energy for maps from S 2 into S 2. We continue the analysis in [6] about limits of α-harmonic maps with uniformly bounded energy. Using a recent energy identity in [7], we obtain an optimal gap theorem for the α-harmonic maps of degree, or.. Introduction Given a compact Riemannian manifold N n,h, the energy functional on the space of smooth closed curves γ: S N is defined by. Eγ := 2 h γ, γtdt. Here we are viewing S as R/Z, i.e., as the circle of length. It is closely related to the length functional, but it has the advantage to select not only curves that extremize length but also their parameterization, namely one of constant speed. It is easy to prove that there exists ε >, depending only on N and h, such that if γ is a critical point of E and Eγ < ε then γ is constant. Indeed, ε = 2 l2 where l is the length of the shortest closed geodesic in N n,h ε = + if N n,h contains no closed geodesics. This is one of the simplest examples of a gap theorem in Geometric Analysis. More significant gap theorems, just to name a few, have been established in minimal surface theory, the study of Willmore surfaces, Yang-Mills theory and conformal geometry. A selection of such theorems can be found in [4], [], [2], [2] and many others in the literature. Let now M 2,g be a compact Riemannian surface without boundary. As a natural generalization of. one can consider the Dirichlet energy Eu defined for every u W,2 M,N by.2 Eu = u 2 da M = euda M, 2 M with eu = 2 u 2 the energy density of u. While. enjoys nice compactness properties, this is not the case for.2. For example, if M 2,g is the standard 2-sphere then the Dirichlet energy is invariant under composition on the right with Möbius maps. To deal with this issue, a regularization of the following form was considered in [3]. For α > and u M Date: March 26, 29.
2 TOBIAS LAMM, ANDREA MALCHIODI, AND MARIO MICALLEF W,2α M,N,.3 E α u := 2 M 2+ u 2 α da M indeedin[3]theintegrandwas+ u 2 α butit isconvenientforourpurposesto choose this equivalent variant. The functional E α has the advantage of satisfying the Palais-Smale compactness condition, and hence critical points can be found in every homotopy class. Critical points of E α are called α-harmonic maps. They are smooth and, if N,h is embedded isometrically into R k with second fundamental form A, they satisfy.4 u+au u, u = 2α 2+ u 2 2 u, u u. Of course, a sequence of solutions with uniformly bounded E α -energy might still develop blow-ups as α tends to one, but in [3] it was shown that, after proper rescaling, it would form a finite number of bubbles i.e., non-trivial harmonic maps from S 2 to N. Theorem 3.3 in [3] is the gap theorem for α-harmonic maps that is analogous to the gap theorem for geodesics stated at the beginning of this Introduction. Theorem.. [3] There exists ε > and α > such that if Eu < ε, < α < α and u is a critical map of E α, then u is constant. From now on, M 2,g and N n,h will both be S 2,g S 2, the standard 2-sphere isometrically embedded in R 3. For u: S 2 S 2, its Jacobian is Ju = u e u e 2 u and its energy density is 2 u 2, where e,e 2 stands for a local oriented orthonormal frame of TS 2. The degree of u is then.5 degu = JudA S 2. 4π S 2 If u W,2α S 2,S 2 has degree one, we have 8π = +JudA S 2 S 2.6 +euda S 2 S 2 which implies 2 2E αu α 4π α α,.7 E α u 4 α 2π. We have equality if and only if u is conformal with constant energy density equal to one, which happens only if u is a rotation. In [6] we proved the following result which is an extension of the gap theorem. to this special setting. Theorem.2. [6] There exists ε > and α > small such that the only critical points u α of E α which satisfy E α u α 4 α 2π+ε and α α are the constant maps and the maps of the form u R x = Rx with R O3. Since the only minimizers of E among maps from S 2,g S 2 to itself of degree one are rational see [4], it is natural to expect that the functions u α as in Theorem.2 are close in W,2 S 2 to a rational map. Indeed, in [6] this is proved in stronger norms and for specific rational maps which are of Möbius type, the degree being
GAP THEOREM FOR α-harmonic MAPS 3 equal to. A finite-dimensional reduction of the form in [], together with refined asymptotic expansions then yields Theorem.2. It is somehow natural to expect the above result, since the α-energy breaks the Möbius symmetry and penalizes functions with large gradients. In this paper, exploiting some bubbling estimates of new type from [7], we are able to quantitatively and optimally improve Theorem.2. This is our result. Theorem.3. There exists α > so that the only critical points u α of E α of degree zero which satisfy E α u α 6 α 2π and α α are the constant maps. Similarly, there exists α > so that the only critical points u α of E α of degree ± which satisfy E α u α 8 α 2π and α α are maps of the form u R x = Rx with R O3. Remark.4. This result improves Proposition 7. in [6] in the case of maps of degree zero or ±. There we assumed, for degree zero, that Eu α 8π η, for some η >, in order to conclude that u α is constant if α is sufficiently close to one. For degree plus or minus one, the bound in Theorem.3 improves that of Theorem.2. In the final section of this paper we shall show that Theorem.3 is optimal if the degree is zero in the following sense. Theorem.5. For every ε >, there exists α > which depends only on ε such that, if < α < α there exists an α-harmonic map u α : S 2 S 2 with degu α = and 6 α 2π < E α u α < 6 α 2π+ε. The α-harmonic map in Theorem.5 is produced by the methods of Section 8 in [6] where we constructed an example of an α-harmonic map u α of degree one with E α u α > 8 α 2π. We believe that this degree example is also optimal in a sense similar to that in Theorem.5, i.e., E α u α is close to 8 α 2π if α is close to. It would be interesting to understand whether one could replace the energy bounds in Theorem.3 by Morse-index estimates, see [], [5]. Proof of Theorem.3 We first focus on the case of degree ± and, without loss ofgenerality, we assume that u α is a critical point of E α with degu α = and E α u α 8 α 2π. It then follows from Hölder s inequality that Eu α = +eu α da S 2 4π S E αu α α α 4π α 2π. 4π
4 TOBIAS LAMM, ANDREA MALCHIODI, AND MARIO MICALLEF Note that equality can never be attained since this would imply that eu α 3. But α-harmonic maps with constant energy density are harmonic maps and, since we assume that degu α =, we get a contradiction to Eu α = 4π. We claim that for α small enough all these critical points have to be of the form u α x = Rx with R SO3. Assume, for a contradiction, that there exists a sequence α k ց and a sequence u k := u αk of critical points of E k := E αk with degu k = and E k u k 8 α k 2π which are not of the form u k = R k x with R k SO3. It follows from Theorem. in [7] that, for a subsequence which we still denote by u k, the energy identity 2π lim k Eu k = Eω i = 4π degω i, i= where m N and the ω i : S 2 S 2, i m, are non-trivial harmonic maps, holds true. More precisely, the authors show that lim k r α k k = see equation 4.9 in [7], where r k is an energy concentration radius on which a bubble forms. This is precisely the information which is needed in [5] the entropy condition in this paper was only used in order to obtain the same limiting relation between α k and the concentration radius or [8] in order to conclude the even stronger energy identity 2.2 lim E ku k = 4π+ Eω i = 4π+ degω i. k i= Note that these results rely crucially on the assumption that the target manifold is a round sphere since it is known that the energy identity is not true in general for a sequence of α-harmonic maps; see [9]. Finally, it follows from Theorem 2 in [3] that we have the decomposition = degu k = degω i. Now we distinguish two cases: lim k Eu k = 2π. In this case we conclude from 2. and the weak lower semicontinuity of E that Eu k = 2π for all k N and this is impossible, as discussed above. 2 lim k Eu k < 2π. Here we get from the above estimates that degω i < 3 and degω i =. i= i= Since degω i, the first inequality gives m = or 2 and the second equality then only allows m = and degω =. Looking back at 2.2 we see that, for every δ > there exists k large enough so that i= i= i= E k u k < 8π+δ 4 α k 2π+δ/2. Hence it follows from Theorem.2 that we get a contradiction to the fact that u k is not a map of the form described in this Theorem. As the case of maps of degree zero is easier we only sketch the necessary modifications. First we note that the assumption E α u α 6 α 2π implies, by Hölder s inequality, that Eu α 8π and the equality case cannot occur as discussed before.
GAP THEOREM FOR α-harmonic MAPS 5 Following the same contradictionargumentas above, we obtain a sequence α k ց and a sequence of non-constant α k -harmonic maps u k with degu k = and finitely many non-trivial harmonic maps ω i : S 2 S 2, i m, so that lim E ku k = 4π+ k 8π > lim k Eu k = 4π degω i, i= degω i and degu k = = i= It follows that m =, degω = and therefore lim Eu k =. k degω i. It follows from Theorem.2 that u k const. for all k large enough and this contradicts our assumption. 3. Proof of Theorem Construction of a non-constant α-harmonic map of degree zero. As in Section 8 in our paper [6], we construct the the desired map as a minimizer of the α-energy in a certain class of co-rotationally symmetric maps. More precisely, we consider the parameterisation r,θ sinr cosθ, sinr sinθ, cosr of S 2, where n N, r [nπ,n+π] and θ [,2π]. We are then interested in maps u f : S 2 S 2 such that with r,θ sinfrcosθ, sinfrsinθ, cosfr Such a map u f has degree zero and for f: [,π] R, f =, fπ = 2π. X := {f: [,π] R : u f W,2α S 2,R 3, f =, fπ = 2π} the infimum Λ := inf f X If, where If := E α u f = π i= α 2+f 2 + sinf2 sinr 2 sinrdr is attained by a map f X as was shown in [6]. Note that the argument given there trivially extends to the case considered here. Moreover, setting u := u f, one estimates E α u = π 2+f 2 + sinf 2 α sinr 2 sinrdr π 2+f 2 + sinf 2 α α sinr 2 sinrdr sinrdr α 2 α π 2sinr+2 f sinf dr.
6 TOBIAS LAMM, ANDREA MALCHIODI, AND MARIO MICALLEF Now there exists r,π such that f r = π and hence r f sinf dr f sinf dr f sinf dr r = cosf r r + cosf r π r = 4 which implies E α u 6 α 2π. Finally, u is non-constant and its degree is zero. Therefore, by Theorem.3 we have 3. E α u > 6 α 2π. Remark 3.. If we minimize If among maps f: [,π] [,2kπ] then we get an α-harmonic map of degree and alpha-energy at least 4k + 2 α 2π and if we minimize If among maps f: [,π] [,2k + π] then we get an α-harmonic map of degree and alpha-energy at least 4k +4 α 2π. In what follows we shall rename the map u constructed above as u α, to indicate its dependence on α An upper bound for E α u α. Proposition 3.2. There exists C > universal such that, for < α < 5 4, 3.2 E α u α < 6 α 2π +Cα /2. Proof. For λ >, let fr := 2arctanλtanr, r [,π] with arctan also taking values in [,π]. Then as r increases from to π/2, fr increases from to π, i.e., u f maps the upper hemisphere to the full sphere with the equator being all mapped to the South Pole,,. The requirement that arctan takes values between and π forces fr to increase from π to 2π as r increases from π/2 to π, i.e., u f maps the lower hemisphere to the full sphere again but with the opposite orientation which confirms that u f has degree zero. Furthermore, u f X. In 8. of [6], we showed that the energy density eu f is given by So we calculate f 2λ r = cos 2 r +λ 2 sin 2 r, Therefore, eu f = 2 f 2 + sinf2 sinr 2. 2λtanr sinfr = +λ 2 tan 2 r = sinrcosrf r. 3.3 eu f = 2λ 2 +cos 2 r λ 2 λ 2 cos 2 r 2 and 3.4 E α u f = 2 α π +eu f α sinrdr = 2 α+ π /2 +eu f α sinrdr, where we have used the even symmetry of cos 2 r and sinr about π/2. We shall use the inequality 3.5 +x α +αx+α x 2, α [,2], x
GAP THEOREM FOR α-harmonic MAPS 7 and therefore, we need to estimate the integrals I := I 2 := /2 /2 +cos 2 r λ 2 λ 2 cos 2 r 2 sinrdr +cos 2 r 2 λ 2 λ 2 cos 2 r 4 sinrdr. We make the change of variables t = cosr and set a 2 := λ 2. Then 3.6 and 3.7 become To estimate 3.8 we use and note that Therefore, 3. I := λ 4 I 2 := λ 8 +t 2 a 2 t 2 2 < 2a 2 at 2 + +at 2 /2 To estimate 3.9 we use and note that Now a 4 +t 2 a 2 t 2 2 dt +t 2 2 a 2 t 2 4 dt. at 2 + +at 2 dt = 2 a 2 = 2λ2. eu f sinrdr = 2λ 2 I < 2 a 2 = 2λ2 λ 2. +t 2 2 a 2 t 2 4 < a 4 at 4 at 4 dt = 3a 5 a 3 a 4 a 3 = +a3 a 4 a 2 3 < 8λ6 a 4 < a 4 a 3. and therefore, if λ 2 > 2 so that a 2 > 2 we have that I 2 < 32λ 2. It follows that 3. /2 Using 3.5 in 3.4 we get E α u f 2 α+ π +α from which it follows that euf 2 sinrdr = 4λ 4 I 2 < 28λ 2. /2 E α u f < 2 α+ π eu f sinrdr +α /2 + 2αλ2 λ 2 +28α λ2. euf 2 sinrdr
8 TOBIAS LAMM, ANDREA MALCHIODI, AND MARIO MICALLEF Still assuming that λ 2 λ > 2 we have 2 λ 2 < +2λ 2 and therefore, E α u f < 2 α+ π 3+ 4α λ 2 +2α +28α λ2. By choosing λ = α /4 with α, 5 4 so that λ2 > 2 we obtain E α u f < 2 α+ π 3+Cα /2 < 6 α 2π+Cα /2. Finally, since u α minimizes I among maps in X, we have that namely, 3.2. E α u α < E α u f < 6 α 2π+Cα /2, 3.3. Completion of Proof of Theorem.5. Proof. Given ε > choose 5 4 > α > so that Cα /2 < ε. Then, by Theorem.3 and Proposition 3.2, for < α < α we have which concludes the proof. 6 α 2π < E α u α < 6 α 2π+Cα /2 < 6 α 2π+ε, Remark 3.3. The map u f constructed above with fr = 2arctanλtanr can also be written as u λ z = λz z 2, z C { }, where S 2 is identified with C { } via stereographic projection from the South Pole. The calculations seemed to us somewhat more messy in this representation of S 2. However, this representation may be helpful to prove the optimality of the degree example referred to just after Theorem.5 by computing the α-energy of z z z 2 z 2 ε 2 ε 2 z 2, < ε, depending on α.
