PARALLELOPIPEDS OF POSITIVE RANK TWISTS OF ELLIPTIC CURVES arxiv: v [math.nt] 0 Feb 200 BO-HAE IM AND MICHAEL LARSEN Abstract. For every n N there exists an elliptic curve E/Q and an n-dimensional subspace V of Q /(Q ) 2 such that for all v V, the quadratic twist E v has positive rank.. Introduction Let E be an elliptic curve over a number field K. For every element v K /(K ) 2, there is a well-defined quadratic twist of E associated tov, whichwedenotee v. Themainresultofthispaperisthefollowing: Theorem. For every n N there exists an elliptic curve E/Q and an n-dimensional subspace V of Q /(Q ) 2 such that for all v V, the quadratic twist E v has positive rank. We can express this theorem slightly differently, along the lines of [IL]. If L/K is a finite Galois extension of number fields, with group G and E/K is an elliptic curve, then G acts on V := E(L) Q. If W is any G-subrepresentation of V, we say that the pair (G,W) is Mordell- Weil over K. Theorem now asserts that the regular representation of every elementary 2-group is Mordell-Weil over Q. We remark that T. Dokchitser and V. Dokchitser [DD] have given examples of number fields K such that, modulo the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, every regular representation of an elementary 2-group is Mordell-Weil over K in dimension. In fact, something stronger is true: their examples have the remarkable property that (under Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer) every quadratic twist has positive rank. (Of course, K cannot be Q.) Our proof depends on Vatsal s theorem [Va] which asserts that for the elliptic curve X 0 (9) the set of positive integers d such that E d has rank has positive density Mathematics Subject Classification. 2 2 BO-HAE IM AND MICHAEL LARSEN 2. Some Multiplicative Combinatorics Definition 2. Let n be a positive integer. We say that a subset Π of N is a strict n-parallelopiped if we have Π = {c i I a i I {,2,...,n}} for some rational numbers a i,c Q such that the images of a,...,a n are linearly independent in the F 2 -vector space Q /Q 2. The main result of this section is the following: Theorem 3. Any set S of positive integers of positive lower density contains a strict n-parallelopiped for each positive integer n. For any subset S of N, we define the function f S (t) := n S e nt onthedomain(0, ). Thus, S T implies thatforallt, f S (t) f T (t). In particular, () f S (t) f N (t) = 2max(/t,). e t More generally, this principle applies to multisets. If S,...,S n N, then for all t (0, ), the first two Bonferroni inequalities imply (2) f S S n (t) f Si (t) and (3) i n If a b, we define f Si (t) i<j n P a,b = i n f Si S j (t) f S S n (t). where the product is taken over primes. For any positive integer m, we define R(m) := {n N (m,n) = } the set of positive integers relatively prime to m. Lemma 4. For any S N and b a > and for all t (0, ), we have f S R(Pa,b ) = e nt t ( p ). {n S (n,p a,b )=} p,
PARALLELOPIPEDS OF POSITIVE RANK TWISTS OF ELLIPTIC CURVES 3 Proof. Clearly As we have f S R(Pa,b )(t) f Ra,b (t) = {n (ip a,b,(i+)p a,b ) (n,p a,b )=} i=0 {n (ip a,b,(i+)p a,b ) (n,p a,b )=} e nt φ(p a,b )e ip a,bt, f Ra,b (t) φ(p a,b) e P a,bt φ(p a,b) tp a,b = t For any S N we define D(S) := limsup T /T f S (t)dt. ( p ). e nt. Lemma 5. For all subsets S of N, let d(s) denote the lower density of S. Then D(S) d(s). Proof. For all ǫ > 0, there exists N such that for all n N, S [,n] > (d(s) ǫ)n. Therefore, for all t > 0, f S (t) > (d(s) ǫ)e nt = e Nt (d(s) ǫ) e t n=n Thus, for T > N/ǫ, we have /T f S (t)dt ( ǫ/n /T logn/ǫ Taking limsup T, we conclude that for all ǫ > 0, which implies the lemma. D(S) e ǫ (d(s) ǫ), e Nt (d(s) ǫ). t e ǫ (d(s) ǫ)dt t ) e ǫ (d(s) ǫ). For any subset S of N and any positive integer m, let S m := N m S = {n N mn S.}
4 BO-HAE IM AND MICHAEL LARSEN Proposition 6. If S is a subset of N with D(S) > 0, and N is a positive integer, there exist primes q > p > N such that D(S p S q ) > 0. 2 Proof. Let a be an integer larger than max(n, ). As D(S) ( p ) = ( p ) ( p ) = 0, p a prime we may choose b such that Writing p<a prime ( p ) D(S). 4 S = (S R(P a,b )) ps p, and applying (2) and Lemma 4, we obtain f Sp (pt) = f psp (t) f S (t) f S R(Pa,b )(t) (4) Let X denote the set of values T such that /T f S (t) t f S (t)dt 3D(S). 4 ( p ). By definition of D(S), X is unbounded. Choosing T X and integrating (4), we obtain (5) /T f Sp (pt)dt /T f S (t)dt ( p ) D(S). 2 Interchanging integral and sum and substituting u = pt, we obtain /T f Sp (pt)dt = p p p/t f Sp (u)du.
PARALLELOPIPEDS OF POSITIVE RANK TWISTS OF ELLIPTIC CURVES 5 By (), this can expressed as p /T f Sp (u)du+o ( ). Combining this with (5) and choosing T sufficiently large, we obtain f Sp (u)du a f Sp (u)du ad(s). p 3 /T By definition of a, this means (6) Let /T S = /T f Sp (u)du 4. We integrate the inequality (3) from /T to and interchange sum and integral to obtain (7) a p<q b p,q prime /T f Sp S q (u)du S p. Applying () to S and integrating, we get /T f S (u)du 2. /T Combining this with (6) and (7), we get f Sp S q (u)du 2, which implies for some p and q. a p<q b p,q prime D(S p S q ) /T (b a)(+b a). f Sp (u)du /T f S (u)du. The following theorem is a strengthened version of Theorem 3.
6 BO-HAE IM AND MICHAEL LARSEN Theorem 7. Let Σ denote a finite set of primes and S a subset of N such that D(S) > 0. Then there exist a rational number c and an infinite set of pairwise distinct vectors (a j,,...,a j,n ) Q n such that for each j, {c i I a j,i I {,2,...,n}} S, the numerators and denominators of the a j,i are not divisible by any prime in Σ, and the images of a j,,...,a j,n are linearly independent in Q /Q 2. Proof. We use induction on n. The base case n = is trivial. Suppose the theorem is true for some n. Let N be the maximum of all primes in Σ. By Proposition 6, there exist primes q > p > N such that D(S p S q ) > 0. By the induction hypothesis for S p S q and Σ := Σ {p,q}, there exist c and a j,i prime to Σ such that the a j,,...,a j,n are independent in Q /Q 2 and for all j, {c i I a j,i I {,2,...,n}} S p S q. Setting c := pc, a j, := a j,,...,a j,n := a j,n, and a j,n+ := q/p, we have {c i I a j,i I {,2,...,n+}} S, and the a j,i are prime to Σ. 3. The Main Theorem We prove Theorem. Proof of Theorem. Let E be the elliptic curve X 0 (9) and S := {d N rank(e d ) > 0}. Then, Vatsal s theorem [Va] implies that S has positive lower density. Let n N be given. By Theorem 3, there exist c,a,...,a n Q such that the images of a i are linearly independent in Q /Q 2 and such that {c i I a i I {,2,...,n}} S. If we let V be a subspace of Q /Q 2 generated by a,...,a n, then it is of dimension n and for each v V, the rank of the twist of E c by v (which is E cv ) is positive.
