3 Course Overview is a full year, high school credit course that is intended for the student who has successfully mastered the core algebraic concepts covered in the prerequisite course, Mathematics 800 Fundamentals. Within this course, the student will explore basic algebraic fundamentals such as evaluating, creating, solving and graphing linear, quadratic, and polynomial functions. Relationships Between Quantities and Expressions Part 1: Students will interpret the structure of and evaluate expressions, address properties of rational and irrational numbers and operations with polynomials in preparation for working with quadratic functions later in the course. Content addressed in this unit will provide a solid foundation for all subsequent units. Relationships Between Quantities and Expressions Part 2: Students will solve problems related to unit analysis, understand the various ways to factor trinomials including factoring (x 2 + bx + c AND ax 2 + bx + c), perform operations involving radicals, and apply this knowledge to real world application problems. Reasoning with Linear Equations and Inequalities Part 1: Building on standards from middle school, students will analyze linear functions only. Students will rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest, investigate the properties of equality, and solve two-step equations. Reasoning with Linear Equations and Inequalities Part 2: Students will investigate key features of graphs, including slope, recognize arithmetic sequences as linear functions, and explore properties of inequality. Reasoning with Linear Equations and Inequalities Part 3: Students will create, solve, and model graphically linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables; create, solve, and model graphically systems of linear equations in two variables; create and interpret systems of inequalities where applicable; for example, students will create a system to define the domain of a particular situation, such as a situation limited to the first quadrant; the focus is not on solving systems of inequalities. Modeling and Analyzing Quadratic Functions: Students will explore commutative, associative and distributive properties; investigate domain and range of a quadratic function; and work with special cases of factoring quadratics. Students will analyze quadratic functions only. Students will investigate key features of graphs; solve quadratic equations by taking square roots, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula; compare and contrast graphs in standard, vertex, and intercept forms; and explore exponents. Students will only work with real number solutions. Modeling and Analyzing Exponential Functions: Students will analyze exponential functions only and will investigate key features of graphs; create, solve, and model graphically exponential equations; recognize geometric sequences as exponential functions. Comparing and Contrasting Functions: Students will compare and contrast linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. Describing Data: Students will summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable, summarize, represent, and interpret data on two categorical and quantitative variables, and interpret linear models Glynlyon, Inc. 1
