Rhomboidal C 4 C 8 toris which are Cayley graphs F. Afshari, M. Maghasedi Department of Mathematics, Karaj Branch, Islamic Azad University, Karaj, Iran arxiv:87.78v [math.gr] Jul 8 Abstract A C 4 C 8 net is a trivalent decoration made by alternating squares C 4 and octagons C 8. It can cover either a cylinder or a torus. In this paper we determine rhomboidal C 4 C 8 toris which are Cayley graphs. Keywords: Cayley graph, C 4 C 8 (R) nanotori. Introduction and preliminaries For notation and terminology not defined here we refer to []. Cayley [4], introduced the definition of Cayley graph and over the time this graph has been investigated as an interesting model of graphs by researchers. Let G denote a finite group and let S be a subset of G satisfying: () S, where denotes the identity of G, and () s S implies s S. The Cayley graph Cay(G, S) on G with connection set S has the elements of G as its vertices and an edge joining g to sg for all g G and s S. Determining whether a graph is Cayley graph is one of the most important problems. In particular, determining chemical Cayley graphs is very important. In 994, Chung et al. showed that the Buckyball, a soccer ball-like molecule, consisting of 6 carbon atoms is a Cayley graph on A 5, the alternating group on 5 symbols [6], see also [5, Example 7.6]. Then in 6, Meng et al. proved that the only fulleren in which is a Cayley graph is the Buckyball []. Also it is shown in [] that honeycomb toroidal graphs are Cayley graphs. In this paper we consider the problem for rhomboidal C 4 C 8 tori. Carbon nanotubes form an interesting class of carbon nanomaterials. These can be imagined as rolled sheets of graphite about different axes. Iijima [7], in 99 discovered carbon nanotubes as multi-walled structures. Carbon nanotubes show remarkable mechanical properties. A C 4 C 8 net is a trivalent decoration made by alternating squares C 4 and octagons C 8. The rhomboidal C 4 C 8 naotori T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n] is constructed from squares and octagons. Figure in next page shows a T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n] nanotori. fateme-afshari64@yahoo.com Corresponding author maghasedi@kiau.ac.ir
Figure : T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n] nanotori Throughout this paper Γ = T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n], where m is the number of rows and n is the number of columns. Thus V (Γ) = {vj,i t : i m, j n, t =,,, } and E(Γ) = {v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j+,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i+, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i, v j,iv j,i : i m, j n}, where the sum/minus are in modulo m and the second sum/minus are in modulo n. Observe that Γ is a connected cubic graph of order 4mn and has 6mn edges. Our aim in this paper is to answer the following problem. Problem For which m,n, T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n] is a Cayley graph? We use the following well-known theorem of Sabidussi. Theorem (Sabidussi, []) Let Γ be a graph. Then Γ is a Cayley graph if and only if Aut(Γ) contains a regular subgroup. Main results For m n, we have some evidences that T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n] may not be a Cayley graph. For for m = and n =, we computed by GAP, that Aut(T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n]) = D 8 and has no regular subgroup of order 4. In the rest of this section we will prove that T RC 4 C 8 (R)[m, n] is a Cayley graph whenever m = n.
Lemma Let Γ = T RC 4 C 8 (R)[n, n] and g k : v(γ) v(γ), k 4,are the following maps: g : vj,i t vj,(i ) t, t =,,, g : vj,i t v(j+),i t, t =,,, g : v j,i v i,j, v j,i v i,j, v j,i v i,j, v j,i v i,j g 4 : v j,i v n j+,n i+, v j,i v n j+,n i+, v j,i v n j+,n i+, v j,i v n j+,n i+ then g k Aut(Γ), for all k. Proof. We show that g k Aut(Γ), k 4. It is clear that g k is a bijection for k 4. Let v V (Γ) be an arbitrary vertex and u N[v]. We show that g k (u) N[g k (v)] for k 4. Assume that v = vj,i t, where t {,,, }, j {,, n} and i {,, n}. Note that N[v j,i ] = {vj,i, v j,i, v j,i }, N[v j,i ] = {v j,i, v j,i, v j,i }, N[v j,i ] = {v j,i, v j,i+, v j,i }, N[v j,i ] = {v j+,i, v j,i, v j,i }. Without loss of generality, assume that t =, and thus v = vj,i. It follows that g (v) = vj,i, g (v) = vj+,i, g (v) = vi,j and g 4(v) = vn j+,n i+. Furthermore, u {v j,i, v j,i, v j,i }. Assume that u = vj,i. Then g (u) = vj,i, g (u) = vj,i, g (u) = vi,j and g 4(u) = vn j+,n i+. Thus for k 4, g k (u) N[g k (v)], and so g k preserves the adjacency. If u {vj,i, v j,i }, then similarly we obtain that g k preserves the adjacency, for k 4. Consequently, g k Aut(Γ), for k 4. Lemma Keeping the notations of Lemma, we have g n = g n = g = g 4 =, g g = g g, g g 4 = g 4 g, g g 4 = g 4 g, g g 4 = g 4 g, g g = g g. Proof. Let v = vj,i t V (Γ), where t {,,, }, j {,, n} and i {,, n}. By definition of Γ = T UC 4 C 8 (R)[n, n], we have N[vj,i ] = {v j,i, v j,i, v j,i }, N[v j,i ] = {v j,i, v j,i, v j,i }, N[v j,i ] = {vj,i, v j,i+, v j,i }, N[v j,i ] = {v j+,i, v j,i, v j,i }. It is straightforward to see that gn (v) = gn (v) = g (v) = g 4 (v) = v. We show that g g (v) = g g (v). If t =, then as desired. If t =, then g g (v) = g g (vj,i) = g (vj,i) = vi+,j g g (v j,i) = g (vj,i ( ) ) = g (vj,i+) = vi+,j as desired. If t =, then g g (v) = g g (vj,i) = g (vi,j) = vi+,j g g (v j,i) = g (vj,i ( ) ) = g (vj,i+) = vi+,j g g (v) = g g (vj,i) = g (vi,j) = vi+,j g g (v j,i) = g (vj,i ( ) ) = g (vj,i+) = vi+,j
as desired. Finally assume that t =. Then g g (vj,i) = g (vj,i) = vi+,j g g (v j,i) = g (vj,i ( ) ) = g (vj,i+) = vi+,j. We next show that g g 4 (v) = g 4 g (v). If t =, then as desired. If t =, then g g 4 (v) = g g 4 (vj,i) = g (vn j+,n i+) = vn j+,n i+ g 4 g (v j,i) = g 4 (v(j ),i ) = (v n j+,n i+) If t =, then g g 4 (vj,i) = g (vn j+,n i+) = vn j+,n i+ g 4 g (v j,i) = g 4 (vj,i) = vn j+,n i+ Finally if t =, then g g 4 (vj,i) = g (vn j+,n i+) = vn j+,n i+ g 4 g (v j,i) = g 4 (vj,i) = vn j+,n i+ g g 4 (vj,i) = g (vn j+,n i+) = vn j+,n i+ g 4 g (v j,i) = g 4 (vj,i) = vn j+,n i+. The proof for g g (v) = g g (v), g g 4 (v) = g 4 g (v), and g g 4 (v) = g 4 g (v) is similarly verified. Let us recall the definition of semidirect products of groups. Let G be a group, H and K be its subgroups, G = HK, H be normal in G, and H K = {}. Then we say G is semidirect product of H by K and we write G = H K. It is a well-known fact in group theory that every element g of G can be written uniquely as g = hk for some h H and k K. If K is also normal, then we say G is direct product of H and K and we write G = H K. Lemma Keeping the notations of Lemma, let G =< g, g, g, g 4 > be the group generated by g, g, g and g 4. Then G = H K, where H =< g, g > = C n C n and K =< g, g 4 > = C C. Proof. Put H =< g, g > and K =< g, g 4 >. Since g g = g g, we have H =< g > < g > = C n C n and we have g g 4 = g 4 g therefore K =< g > < g 4 > = C n C n. Now we prove that G = HK, H G and H K = {}, which imply that G = H K. Firstly, we prove that H G. We know that, G =< g, g, g, g 4 > and H =< g, g >. H G g Hg = H g g g H, g g g H, g G It is obvious that, g g g H. We prove that g g g H. By Lemma, g g = g g, and so g g g = g g g = g H. Also we show that, g g g H. g g = g g g g g = g g g g = g g g g = g g g. 4
Therefore, g = g g g = g g g H. According to Lemma, we also have g4 g g 4 H. In a similar way, we also have, g g g H, g g g H, g g g H, g 4 g g 4 H. So for every generator of G and H, like g and h, respectively, we have g hg H, Therefore H G. We next prove that H K =. Let H K. Then x H K x H, x K x = g m gm, x = gm gm 4 4. If we choose an arbitrary vertex v = v,, then we have g m gm (v,) = g m gm 4 4 (v,). But this is not possible, according to the maps g i, i 4. So H K =. Finally, we see that, G = HK. Every member of G can be written in the form of hk, where h H and k K. As an example if we choose g g G, we will see that g g HK, g g = g g g g HK. This complete the proof. Consequently, G = H K Now we are ready to give the main theorem of this paper. Theorem Let Γ = T RC 4 C 8 (R)[n, n]. Then Γ is a Cayley graph on G =< g, g, g, g 4 > = (C n C n ) (C C ), where g k : V (Γ) V (Γ) are maps g : vj,i t vj,(i ) t, t =,,, g : vj,i t v(j+),i t, t =,,, g : g 4 : v j,i v i,j, v j,i v i,j, v j,i v i,j, v j,i v i,j v j,i v n j+,n i+, v j,i v n j+,n i+, v j,i v n j+,n i+, v j,i v n j+,n i+. Proof. According to Theorem, it is sufficient to show that G is a regular subgroup of the automorphism group of Γ. Thus we need to show that G is a transitive subgroup of Aut(Γ). According to Lemma, G Aut(Γ). Now we show that G is transitive on V (Γ). Let vj,i t and vt j,i be two different vertices of V (Γ). Assume that t = t. We will show that there exists g G such that g(vj,i t ) = vt. Observe that G =< g j,i, g, g, g 4 >. So g = g r gr gr gr 4 4. Consider the maps g k that k 4 defined in the Lemma. Notice that g and g 4 realize that r = and r 4 =. Therefore, g r gr (vt j,i ) = vt. So the following computation result in g = g j,i i i g j j. g r gr (vt j,i) = g r (vt j+r,i) = v t j+r,i r = v t j,i. So r = j j and r = i i. Therefore, g i i g j j (v t j,i ) = vt j,i. Now let t t. We prove that, v t j,i, v t j,i V (Γ) g Aut(Γ) s.t. g(vt j,i) = v t j,i. 5
For this purpose, we will prove following equalities: g j i g j i g (v j,i) = v j,i, g i i+ g j +j g 4 (v j,i) = v j,i, g i j+ g j +i g g 4 (v j,i) = v j,i, g i i+ g j +j g 4 (v j,i) = v j,i g i j+ g j +i g 4 g (v j,i) = v j,i, g j i g j i g (v j,i) = v j,i. We prove only the first equality, the others can be proved similarly. To prove that g j i g j i v j,i, note that G =< g, g, g, g 4 >. So g = g r gr gr gr 4 that r 4 = and r =. So g r gr g (vj,i ) = 4. Observe that the maps g, g 4 realize g (vj,i ) = v j,i. We should find r and r. It follows that g r gr g (v j,i) = g r gr (v i,j) = g r (v (i+r ),j ) = v (i+r ),(j r ) = v j,i. Therefore, i+r = j and j r = i, and so r = j i and r = j i. As a result, g = g j i g. Thus for every vj,i t, vt j,i V (Γ) there exists g G such that g(v t j,i ) = vt j,i, and this means that G is transitive. By Lemma, we have G = H K, where H =< g > < g > = C n C n and K =< g > < g 4 > = C C. Therefore, G = (C n C n ) (C C ) and G = 4n. g j i References [] B. Alspach, M.
