Lafforgue s approach 3 steps 1 Construction of a KK-theory for Banach algebras, and main properties. 2 Equality γ = 1 in KKG ban (C, C) in many cases. Almost all. The first two steps establish the Bost conjecture and some variants. 3 Construction of a suitable spectral dense subalgebra. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

B-pairs B Bancah algebra. Right (resp. left) Banach B-module: Banach space E endowed with a right (resp. left) action of B such that, for all x E and a B, we have xa x a (resp. ax a x ). B-pair: left Banach B-module E <, right Banach B-module E >, bilinear map, : E < E > B satisfying: x E >, ξ E <, the map η η, x (resp. y ξ, y ) left (resp. right) B-linear and ξ, x ξ x. Often E < not specified: take E < = (E > ) = L(E, B). Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Morphisms of B-pairs E Morphism from E = (E <, E > ) to F = (F <, F > ) couple f = (f <, f > ) where f < : F < E < and f > : E > F > C-linear, left (resp. right) B-linear, continuous; f > and f < ajoint: η, f > (x) = f < (η), x. L(E, F ) the Banach space of morphisms from E to F (norm (f <, f > ) sup( f <, f > )). f L(E, F ) and g L(F, G) define morphism gf = (f < g <, g > f > ) L(E, F ). L(E) = L(E, E) Banach algebra. Let y F > and ξ E <. We note θ y,ξ L(E, F ) (or y ξ ) the morphism given by F < η η, y ξ E < E > x y ξ, x F >. K(E, F ) closed vector span in L(E, F ) of morphisms θ y,ξ. Georges Skandalis (Univ. 5 Definition of the Banach KK-theory A, B be Banach algebras. Cycle for KK ban (A, B): triple (E, π, f ) where E is a Z/2Z-graded B-pair, π : A L(E) (0) is a homomorphism f L(E) (1) such that f π(a) π(a)f K(E), (f 2 1)π(a) K(E) (a A). Sum of cycles and homotopy defined exactly as for Hilbert modules. KK ban (A, B) set of homotopy classes of cycles. Abelian group. Bifunctor: contravariant in A, covariant in B. Action on K-theory KK ban (M n (A), B) isomorphic KK ban (A, B). Idempotent p A, homomorphism i p : C A setting i p (λ) = λp. bilinear map ϕ : K 0 (A) KK ban (A, B) KK ban (C, B) (p, x) (i p ) (x). Can be constructed when A not unital. K 0 (A) KK ban (C, A) (x ϕ(x, 1 A )). Banach-KK-theory acts on the K-theory. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. 6 The equivariant case G locally compact group acting on A and B. Define KKG ban (A, B) same way as the corresponding Kasparov group. A, B C -algebras, natural homomorphism KK G (A, B) KK ban (A, B). G Morphism j G Morphism jg r ban : KKG (A, B) KK ban (A r G, B r G) impossible. Need Banach algebras crossed product, extending reduced crossed product. G L 1 (G) C r (G) isomorphism in K-theory? No general result (Bost). Lafforgue: may perform other Banach crossed product. Definition Algebra norm N on C c (G) is unconditional if N(f ) = N( f ) (f C c (G)). Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Non isometric representations of G Equality γ = 1 proved in slight generalization KK ban (C, C). G l length function on G: l : G R + (continuous) such that l(1) = 0 and l(xy) l(x) + l(y) for all x, y G. KKG,l ban ban (A, B) same way as KKG (A, B) action of G in the B-pairs not isometric but is controled by l i.e. continuous and x ξ exp(l(x)) ξ. l length function, N unconditional norm. Put N : f N(e l f ): unconditional norm. j N,l G : KK ban G,l (A, B) KK ban (A N G, B N G). l length function. For s R +, define N s unconditional norm f N(e sl f ). Subalgebra A Ns G of A N G same K-theory as A N G. s R + γ = 1 in KK ban G,sl (C, C) for all s, implies γ identity in K 0(A N G). Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. 9 Homotopy between γ and 1 Two different cases: 1 geometric : complete riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature; real Lie groups and closed subgroups. 2 Combinatoric : strongly bolic metric space; p-adic Lie groups and closed subgroups. Concentrate here to the combinatoric case: case of buildings of type Ã2. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Abstract results: elliptic complexes G locally compact group, length function l, A, B Banach algebras, E a Z/2Z-graded B-pair with actions of A and G-action controled by l. D = {S L(E); [S, a] K(E), g.s S K(E); g g.s continuous}. F D (1) with id E F 2 K(E): (E, F ) KKG,l ban (A, B). Lemma Let S D (1) such that S 2 K(E) and T D (1) with id E (TS + ST ) K(E) ((E, S) - or S elliptic complex). 1 There exists such a T with T 2 K(E). Then (E, S + T ) KKG,l ban (A, B). 2 The class of (E, S + T ) in KKG,l ban (A, B) does not depend on T. Elliptic complexes define KK-elements. 1 TST is OK. 2 {T D (1) ; ST + TS id E K(E)} is affine. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Abstract results: Elliptic complexes (2) Lemma S, T D (1) such that S 2 K(E) and T 2 K(E). Assume that the spectrum of S + T in D/K(E) is disjoint from R. 1 S and T are elliptic complexes. 2 S and T define the same element of KKG,l ban (A, B). 1 In D/K(E), (ST + TS) commutes with S and T. T (ST + TS) 1 and S(ST + TS) 1 quasi-inverses. 2 We may define a logarithm of ST + TS. The desired homotopy is S(ST + TS) t + T (ST + TS) t 1. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Abstract results: Elliptic complexes (3) Lemma S, T D (1). Assume that S commutes exactly to A and to G, that S 2 = 0 and T 2 K(E), ST + TS = id E. Then the class of (E, S + T ) in (A, B) is zero. KK ban G,l May assume T 2 = 0 (replace T by TST ). S(E) E invariant by A and G. Decomposition ( ) E = S(E) T (E), matrix of these elements is of the form c1,1 c 1,2. Note that c 0 c 1,2 K(E) since T D. 2,2 ( ) c1,1 tc Change these actions through a homotopy 1,2 (t [0, 1]). At 0 c 2,2 t = 0, S + T is degenerate. Georges Skandalis (Univ. 14 Homotopy ϕ = ϕ a : X R + : ϕ(f ) distance to a of most remote point of f. Put l(g) = ϕ(g(a)). It is a length function: indeed l(gh) = d(gh(a), a) d(gh(a), g(a))+d(g(a), a) = d(h(a), a)+d(g(a), a) (g isometry). Theorem For all s > 0, the images of γ and 1 in KKG,sl ban (C, C) coincide. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Homotopy (2) E p Banach space, graded by 0, 1, 2: replace l 2 norm by l p norm in construction of H: l p basis e σ. Consider : E p E p given by (e x ) = 0, (e x e y ) = e y e x and (e x e y e z ) = (e y e z ) (e x e z ) + (e x e y ) (for all (x, y, z) X (2) ). For t > 0, let A t multiplication by e tϕ (unbounded) t = A t A 1 t (bounded). t g. t is compact in every E p (ϕ a ϕ ga almost constant at infinity). Proposition 1 For all s > 0, s : E 1 E 1 elliptic complex. 2 There exists s > 0 such that for all p [1, 2], s : E p E p elliptic complex. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Construction of a quasi-inverse Let x X (0). Points x and a = x 0 determine a parallelogram x 0, y, x, z in the building X. We set T 0 (e x ) = (1 j n n ) e zk 1 e zk + j n k=1 d(x, y) = j(= 6) and d(x, z) = n j(= 3). Clearly T 0 (e x ) = e x e 0. n e yk 1 e yk k=1 where Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Construction of a quasi-inverse (2) In order to define T 0 (e x e y ), one uses the following lemma: Lemma e x e y T 0 (e x e y ) is in the image of. Restrict to the parallelogram containing {x 0, x, y}. restricted to vertices, edges and faces of this parallelogram is exact in dimensions 1 and 2. T 0 (e x e y ) is the element ξ such that (ξ) = e x e y T 0 (e x e y ) decribed above. The desired quasi-inverse of s is T s = A s T 0 A 1 s. 1 For all s > 0, T s is continuous from E 1 into E 1. 2 There exists t > 0 such that, for all p [1, 2], T t is continuous from E p in E p and, for all g G, T t g.t t K(E p ). 3 For all s > 0 and g G, T s g.t s K(E 1 ). Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

1 Check T s (e x ) and T s (e x e y ) bounded on X. Faces appearing located in parallelogram above; their number grows polynomially with the distance from x to x 0 ; coefficients appearing bounded. Conjugation by A s multiplies by function with exponential decay. 2 In Ts (e x e y ) appear all points z such that x, y is on the path from z to x 0. The coefficients appearing have exponential decay exp( sϕ(z)); their number z increases exponentially. Taking s large enough, one may control the l 1 norm of Ts (e x e y ) and that of Ts (e x e y e z ). It follows that Ts is continuous from E 1 into E 1, whence T s is continuous from E into E. As it is continuous from E 1 into E 1, it is continuous from E p into E p for all p (by interpolation). Similar arguments show that T s g.t s K(E p ) for all g G. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

3 Check that when {x, y} goes to infinity, (T s g.t s )(e x ) and (T s g.t s )(e x e y ) go to 0. g.t 0 is T 0 with x 0 replaced by g.x 0. For x far from x 0, from x to x 0 and from x to g.x 0 used in construction of T 0 coincide near x. Since we conjugate by A s only points near x count. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Homotopy: end For s small, s almost invariant and we can use abstract results above to show that (E 1, s ) defines element 1. (Use E s 1 : where norm is changed - with ). For s large, s almost quasi-inverse of T a appearing in γ and we can use abstract results above to show that (E 2, s ) defines element γ. These elements are homotopic!! Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

The last step... Case of Lie groups G (real or p-adic) reductive Lie group: slight modification of Schwarz space (Harish-Chandra algebra) spectral unconditional completion of C c (G). In this way, we get more direct proof of results of Wassermann (real case) and a generalization of Baum, Higson and Plymen (p-adic case). Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Property (RD) Haagerup-Jolissaint G discrete group l length function on G. If G is finitely generated, may take word length. H (G, l) vector space functions f : G C such that, for all p R +, l(x) p f (x) 2 <. Unconditional. x G Theorem (Haagerup) G finitely generated free group. H (G) subalgebra of C r (G) stable under holomorphic functional calculus (spectral). In particular, inclusion H (G) C r (G) induces K-theory isomorphism. Jolissaint: Definition Fnitely generated group G property (RD) if H (G) C r (G). Then H (G) spectral subalgebra of C r (G). Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22

Groups with property (RD) Jolissaint: many groups behaving like free groups (e.g. cocompact subgroups of simple real Lie groups of rank 1) have property (RD). De la Harpe: Gromov s hyperbolic groups. Ramagge, Robertson and Steger: discrete groups acting properly with compact quotient on Ã2 buildings (e.g. discrete subgroups of SL 3 (Q p )). Lafforgue adapts proof of Ramagge, Robertson and Steger to the case of cocompact subgroups of SL 3 (R) and SL 3 (C). Finally, these results extended by M. Talbi and I. Chaterji so to contain also the quaternionic case and products of above groups. Georges Skandalis (Univ. P7/ IMJ) Kasparov s KK-theory - 4. Lafforgue Vanderbilt U. May 8, / 22
