1 2 Units SI base units SI : Système International d'unités (International System of Units) Unite name (symbol) Definition established mass kilogram (kg) The mass of the International Prototype of the Kilogram (IPK). IPK is a rightcircular cylinder of mm made of Pt 90 Ir 10 wt% length meter (m) The length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second time second (s) The duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium 133 atom. electric current ampere (A) The constant current which, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length, of negligible circular cross-section, and placed 1 meter apart in vacuum, would produce between these conductors a force equal to 2x10-7 newton per meter of length 1948 thermodynamic temperature kelvin (K) The fraction 1/ of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water. amount of substance mole (mol) The amount of substance of a system which contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in kilogram of carbon 12. When the mole is used, the elementary entities must be specified and may be atoms, molecules, ions, electrons, other particles, or specified groups of such particles. luminous intensity candela (cd) The candela is the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540x10 12 hertz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian. 1979
2 SI base units (old definition) Unite name (symbol) Old definition mass kilogram (kg) The mass of a cubic decimeter of water. 18th century length meter (m) The length of a pendulum having a half-period of one second. One ten-millionth of the length of the earth's meridian along a quadrant (one fourth the circumference of the earth). The distance between two lines inscribed on a highly stable platinumiridium (Pt 90 Ir 10 wt%) bar. That is to be measured at the melting point of ice. 18th century 1889 time second (s) The fraction 1/ of the mean solar day. electric current ampere (A) The current that would deposit grams of silver per second from a silver nitrate solution (:International Ampere = A) thermodynamic temperature kelvin (K) The fraction 1/ of the thermodynamic temperature of the freezing point of water. ( freezing point depends on atmospheric pressure) amount of substance mole (mol) The amount of substance of a system which contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in kilogram of oxygen. ( isotope problem: 16 O, 17 O, 18 O) luminous intensity candela (cd) Each country had its own, and rather poorly reproducible, unit of luminous intensity. US, UK and France adopted the International Candle represented by carbon filament lamps.
