SOME NEW q-congruences FOR TRUNCATED BASIC HYPERGEOMETRIC SERIES arxiv: v1 [math.nt] 23 Jan 2019 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER Abstract. We provide several new q-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series mostly of arbitrary order. Our results include congruences modulo the square or the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial and in some instances parametric generalizations thereof. These are established by a variety of techniques including polynomial argument creative microscoping (a method recently introduced by the first author in collaboration with Zudilin) Andrews multiseries generalization of the Watson transformation and induction. We also give a number of related conjectures including congruences modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. 1. Introduction In 1914 Ramanujan [18] stated rather mysteriously a number of formulas for 1/π including ( 1 2 )3! (6 +1) = 4 π. In 1997 Van Hamme [23] conjectured 13 interesting p-adic analogues of Ramanujan s or Ramanujan-type formulas for 1/π such as p 1 2 ( 1 2 )3! 3 (6+1) 1 4 p( 1)p 1 2 (mod p 4 ) where(a) n = a(a+1) (a+n 1)denotesthePochhammer symbolandpisanoddprime. All of the 13 supercongruences have been confirmed by different techniques up to now (see [1620]). During the past few years q-analogues of congruences and supercongruences have caught the interests of many authors (see for example [ ]). In particular the first author [8 Theorem 1.1] proved that for n 4 (mod 5) (q;q 5 ) 5 q 5 0 (mod Φ (q 5 ;q 5 ) 5 n (q) 2 ) 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. 2 2 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER which under the substitution q q 1 can be written as It follows that for n 4 (mod 5) (q;q 5 ) 5 q 15 0 (mod Φ (q 5 ;q 5 ) 5 n (q) 2 ). [10 +1] (q;q5 ) 5 q 5 0 (mod Φ (q 5 ;q 5 ) 5 n (q) 2 ). (1.1) Here and in what follows we adopt the standard q-notation: (a;q) n = (1 a)(1 aq) (1 aq n 1 ) is the q-shifted factorial; [n] = [n] q = 1+q+ +q n 1 is the q-integer; and Φ n (q) denotes the n-th cyclotomic polynomial in q. We find that the congruence (1.1) also holds for n 2 (mod 5). It turns out that much more is true. We shall prove the following stronger result. Theorem 1.1. Let d 5 be an odd integer. Then { [2d +1] (q;qd ) d 0 (mod q d(d 3) Φn (q) 2 ) if n 1 (mod d) (q d ;q d ) d 2 0 (mod Φ n (q) 3 ) if n 1 (mod d). 2 (1.2) Note that for d 7 and n 1 (mod d) the above congruence cannot be deduced directly from [8 Theorem 1.1] in a similar way as before. It should be pointed out that the congruence (1.2) does not hold for d = 3. Lie many results given in [11] Theorem 1.1 has a companion as follows. Theorem 1.2. Let d 3 be an odd integer and let n > 1. Then { [2d 1] (q 1 ;q d ) d 0 (mod q d(d 1) Φn (q) 2 ) if n 1 (mod d) (q d ;q d ) d 2 0 (mod Φ n (q) 3 ) if n 1 (mod d). 2 (1.3) We shall also prove the following result. It was originally conjectured by the first author [8 Conjecture 1.3] who also provided a proof of the modulus [n]φ n (q) case [8 Theorem 1.2]. Theorem 1.3. Let n > 1 be an odd integer. Then and n+1 2 (q 1 ;q 2 ) 2 q 2 0 (mod [n] 2 ) (1.4) (q 2 ;q 2 ) 2 (q 1 ;q 2 ) 2 q 2 0 (mod [n] 2 ). (1.5) (q 2 ;q 2 ) 2
SOME NEW q-congruences FOR TRUNCATED BASIC SERIES 3 As mentioned in [8] there are many similar congruences modulo Φ n (q) 2 for truncated basic hypergeometric series. In this paper we shall give more such examples (theorems or conjectures). The simplest example is as follows. Theorem 1.4. Let n 4 be an integer with gcd(n3) = 1. Then (q 1 q 2 ;q 3 ) q 3 0 (mod Φ (q 3 ;q 3 ) 2 n (q) 2 ). (1.6) Note that the first author in joint wor with Pan and Zhang [9] proved that for any odd integer n 5 with gcd(n3) = 1 there holds (qq 2 ;q 3 ) q 3 ( 1) 1/3 n q n2 1 (q 3 ;q 3 ) 2 3 (mod Φ n (q) 2 ) where x n denotes the least non-negative residue of x modulo n. This congruence was originally conjectured in [12] when n = p is an odd prime. We shall prove Theorems 1.1 and 1.2 in Sections 2 and 3 by using the creative microscoping method developed by the first author and Zudilin [13]. We prove these by first establishing their parametric generalizations modulo (1 aq n )(a q n ) and then letting a 1. The proofs are similar to that of [8 Theorem 1.1] but also require Andrews mulitseries generalization of the Watson transformation [1 Theorem 4] (which was already used by the first author Jouhet and Zeng [10] for proving some q-analogues of Calin s congruence [3]). The proofs of Theorems 1.3 and 1.4 are based on two q-series identities and are given in Sections 4 and 5 respectively. Two more congruences modulo Φ n (q) 2 are given in Section 6. We give some related conjectures in the final Section 7. These include two refinements of Theorems 1.1 and 1.2 some extensions of Theorem 1.4 for n 1 (mod 3) and similar conjectures. 2. Proof of Theorem 1.1 We first establish the following parametric generalization of Theorem 1.1 for the case n 1 (mod d). Theorem 2.1. Let d 5 be an odd integer and let n 1 (mod d). Then modulo (1 aq n )(a q n ) [2d +1] (ad 1 qa d 3 q...a 2 q;q d ) (a d 2 q d a d 4 q d...aq d ;q d ) (a1 d qa 3 d q...a 2 q;q d ) (q;q d ) (a 2 d q d a 4 d q d...a 1 q d ;q d ) (q d ;q d ) q d(d 3) 2 0. (2.1) Proof. It is clear that gcd(dn) = 1 and therefore the numbers d2d...(n 1)d are all not divisible by n. This implies that the denominators of the left-hand side of (2.1) does
4 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER not contain the factor 1 aq n nor 1 a 1 q n. Thus for a = q n or a = q n the left-hand side of (2.1) can be written as dn n 1 d [2d +1] (q1 (d 1)n q 1 (d 3)n...q 1 2n ;q d ) (q d (d 2)n q d (d 4)n...q d n ;q d ) (q(d 1)n+1 q (d 3)n+1...q 2n+1 ;q d ) (q;q d ) q d(d 3) (q (d 2)n+d q (d 4)n+d...q n+d ;q d ) (q d ;q d 2 (2.2) ) where we have used (q 1 (d 1)n ;q d ) = 0 for > (dn n 1)/d. Let [ ] [ n n (q;q) n = = ] q (q;q) (q;q) n be the q-binomial coefficient. It is easy to see that [ ] (q 1 (d 1)n ;q d ) q d(d 3) (q d ;q d 2 (dn n 1)/d = ( 1) q d( 2)+(n+1 dn+ d(d 3) 2 ) (2.3) ) q d (q 1 (d 3)n ;q d ) (q d (d 2)n ;q d ) = (qd (d 2)n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q d (d 2)n ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q 1 (d 5)n ;q d ) (q d (d 4)n ;q d ) = (qd (d 4)n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q d (d 4)n ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d. and (q 1 2n ;q d ) (q d 3n ;q d ) = (qd 3n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q d 3n ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q (d 1)n+1 ;q d ) (q (d 2)n+d ;q d ) = (q(d 2)n+d+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q (d 2)n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q (d 3)n+1 ;q d ) (q (d 4)n+d ;q d ) = (q(d 4)n+d+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q (d 4)n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d. (q 2n+1 ;q d ) (q n+d ;q d ) = (q2n+d+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q;q d ) (q d n ;q d ) = (qd n+d ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d (q d n ;q d ) (n+1 d)/d.
SOME NEW q-congruences FOR TRUNCATED BASIC SERIES 5 Note that the right-hand sides of the identities after (2.3) are all polynomials in q d of degree (n+1 d)/d and ( ) ( d + n+1 dn+ d(d 3) ) 2 2 ( ) ( ) (dn n 1)/d (dn n 1)/d = d d + d(d 5) Therefore we can write (2.2) in the following form dn n 1 d ( 1) q d((dn n 1)/d 2 ) [ ] (dn n 1)/d q d P(q d ) (2.4) where P(q d ) is a polynomial in q d of degree 2 + (n + 1 d)(d 1)/d + (d 5)/2 = (dn n 1)/d (d 3)/2 (dn n 1)/d 1. Recall that the q-binomial theorem (see [2 p. 36]) can be written as n [ ] n ( 1) q 2) ( z = (z;q) n. Putting z = q j in the above identity and replacing with n we get n [ ] n ( 1) q (n 2 )+j = 0 for 0 j n 1 (2.5) which immediately means that the expression in (2.2) which equals (2.4) vanishes. This proves (2.1). In order to prove Theorem 1.1 for the case n 1/2 (mod d) we need the following lemma. Lemma 2.2. Let d be a positive odd integer and let n 1/2 (mod d) Then for 0 (dn 2n 1)/d modulo Φ n (q) we have (aq;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d (q d /a;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d ( a) (dn 2n 1)/d 2 (aq;qd ) (q d /a;q d ) q (dn 2n d+1)(dn 2n 1)/2d+(d 1). Proof. Since q n 1 (mod Φ n (q)) we have (aq;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d (q d /a;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d = (1 aq)(1 aqd+1 ) (1 aq dn 2n d ) (1 q d /a)(1 q 2d /a) (1 q dn 2n 1 /a) (1 aq)(1 aq d+1 ) (1 aq dn 2n d ) (1 q d+2n dn /a)(1 q 2d+2n dn /a) (1 q 1 /a) = ( a) (dn 2n 1)/d q (dn 2n d+1)(dn 2n 1)/2d (mod Φ n (q)). (2.6)
6 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER Furthermore modulo Φ n (q) there holds (aq;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d (q d /a;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d = (aq;qd ) (dn 2n 1)/d (1 q dn 2n+d 1 d /a)(1 q dn 2n+2d 1 d /a) (1 q dn 2n 1 /a) (q d /a;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d (1 aq dn 2n d )(1 aq dn 2n+d d ) (1 aq dn 2n d ) (aq;qd ) (dn 2n 1)/d (1 q d 1 d /a)(1 q 2d 1 d /a) (1 q 1 /a) (q d /a;q d ) (dn 2n 1)/d (1 aq d )(1 aq d d ) (1 aq d ) which together with (2.6) establishes the assertion. WenowgiveaparametricgeneralizationofTheorem1.1forthecasen 1/2 (mod d). Theorem 2.3. Let d 3 be an odd integer and let n 1/2 (mod d). Then modulo Φ n (q)(1 aq n )(a q n ) (a d 2 qa d 4 q...aq;q d ) [2d +1] (a d 2 q d a d 4 q d...aq d ;q d ) (a2 d qa 4 d q...a 1 q;q d ) (q;q d ) (a 2 d q d a 4 d q d...a 1 q d ;q d ) (q d ;q d ) q d(d 3) 2 0. (2.7) Proof. By Lemma 2.2 for 0 (dn 2n 1) we can chec that the -th and ((dn 2n 1)/d )-th terms on the left-hand side of (2.7) modulo Φ n (q) cancel each other. Moroever for (dn 2n 1)/d < n 1 the q-shifted factorial (q;q d ) contains the factor 1 q n and is therefore divisible by Φ n (q). This proves that the congruence (2.7) is true modulo Φ n (q). Toprove that (2.7) isalso truemodulo (1 aq n )(a q n ) it suffices toprove thefollowing identity: dn 2n 1 d [2d +1] (q1 (d 2)n q 1 (d 4)n...q 1 n ;q d ) (q d (d 2)n q d (d 4)n...q d n ;q d ) (q(d 2)n+1 q (d 4)n+1...q n+1 ;q d ) (q;q d ) q d(d 3) (q (d 2)n+d q (d 4)n+d...q n+d ;q d ) (q d ;q d 2 = 0 (2.8) ) where we have used that (q 1 (d 2)n ;q d ) = 0 for > (dn 2n 1)/d. This time the method employed to prove (2.2) does not wor. Instead we shall use Andrews multiseries generalization of the Watson transformation [1 Theorem 4]: 0 (aq a q ab 1 c 1...b m c m q N ;q) (q a aaq/b 1 aq/c 1...aq/b m aq/c m aq N+1 ;q) = (aqaq/b mc m ;q) N (aq/b m aq/c m ;q) N l 1...l m 1 0 ( a m q m+n b 1 c 1 b m c m (aq/b 1 c 1 ;q) l1 (aq/b m 1 c m 1 ;q) lm 1 (q;q) l1 (q;q) lm 1 )
SOME NEW q-congruences FOR TRUNCATED BASIC SERIES 7 (b 2 c 2 ;q) l1...(b m c m ;q) l1 + +l m 1 (aq/b 1 aq/c 1 ;q) l1...(aq/b m 1 aq/c m 1 ;q) l1 + +l m 1 (q N ;q) l1 + +l m 1 (b m c m q N /a;q) l1 + +l m 1 (aq) lm 2+ +(m 2)l1 q l1+ +lm 1 (b 2 c 2 ) l 1 (bm 1 c m 1 ) l 1+ +l m 2. (2.9) Let q q d a = q b 1 = q (d+1)/2 m = (d 1)/2 and N = (dn 2n 1)/d in (2.9). Moreover put (c 1 b 2 c 2...b m c m ) = (q 1 (d 4)n q 1 (d 6)n...q 1 n q (d 2)n+1 q (d 4)n+1...q n+1 ) with b m = q 1 n and c m = q 3n+1. Then the left-hand side of (2.9) reduces to the left-hand side of (2.8) while the right-hand side of (2.9) contains the factor (q d+1 /b m c m ;q d ) N = (q d 2n 1 ;q d ) N = 0 because d 2n 1 0 (mod d) d 2n 1 0 and N > (d 2n 1)/d. This proves (2.8) i.e. the congruence (2.7) holds modulo (1 aq n )(a q n ). Since the polynomials Φ n (q) and (1 aq n )(a q n ) are clearly relatively prime the proof of (2.7) is complete. Proof of Theorem 1.1. For n 1 (mod d) the limits of the denominators in (2.1) as a 1 are relatively prime to Φ n (q). On the other hand the limit of (1 aq n )(a q n ) as a 1 has the factor Φ n (q) 2. It follows that the limiting case a 1 of the congruence (2.1) reduces to (1.2) for the case n 1 (mod d). Similarly for n 1/2 (mod d) the limit of Φ n (q)(1 aq n )(a q n ) as a 1 has the factor Φ n (q) 3 and so the limiting case a 1 of the congruence (2.7) reduces to (1.2) for the case n 1/2 (mod d). This completes the proof of the theorem. 3. Proof of Theorem 1.2 The proof of Theorem 1.2 is similar to that of Theorem 1.1. We have the following parametricgeneralizationoftheorem1.2forcasen 1 (mod d). Itsproofiscompletely analogous to that of Theorem 2.1 and is left to the interested reader. Theorem 3.1. Let d 3 be an odd integer and let n 1 (mod d). Then modulo (1 aq n )(a q n ) [2d 1] (ad 1 q 1 a d 3 q 1...a 2 q 1 ;q d ) (a d 2 q d a d 4 q d...aq d ;q d ) (a1 d q 1 a 3 d q 1...a 2 q 1 ;q d ) (q 1 ;q d ) q d(d 1) (a 2 d q d a 4 d q d...a 1 q d ;q d ) (q d ;q d 2 0. ) Moreover we have the following result similar to Lemma 2.2.
8 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER Lemma 3.2. Let d be a positive odd integer and let n 1/2 (mod d) Then for 0 (dn 2n+1)/d modulo Φ n (q) we have (aq 1 ;q d ) (dn 2n+1)/d (q d /a;q d ) (dn 2n+1)/d ( a) (dn 2n+1)/d 2(aq 1 ;q d ) (q d /a;q d ) q (dn 2n d 1)(dn 2n+1)/2d+(d+1). By Lemma 3.2 and Andrews transformation (2.9) we can establish the following parametric generalization of Theorem 1.2 for the case n 1/2 (mod d). Theorem 3.3. Let d 3 be an odd integer and let n 1/2 (mod d). Then modulo Φ n (q)(1 aq n )(a q n ) [2d 1] (ad 2 q 1 a d 4 q 1...aq 1 ;q d ) (a d 2 q d a d 4 q d...aq d ;q d ) (a2 d q 1 a 4 d q 1...a 1 q 1 ;q d ) (q 1 ;q d ) q d(d 1) (a 2 d q d a 4 d q d...a 1 q d ;q d ) (q d ;q d 2 0. ) The proof of Theorem 1.2 then follows from Theorems 3.1 and 3.3 by taing the limit a 1. Finally we point out that for d = 3 and any n > 0 the sum in Theorem 3.3 has a closed form as follows: [6 1] (aq 1 q 1 /aq 1 ;q 3 ) q 3 = [3n 2][3n 4] (aq2 q 2 /aq 1 ;q 3 ) n 1 (aq 3 q 3 /aq 3 ;q 3 ) (aq 3 q 3 /aq 3 ;q 3 ) n 1 which can be easily proved by induction on n. The a = 1 case implies that when d = 3 the congruence (1.3) modulo Φ n (q) 3 is still true for n 1 (mod 3) and n > Proof of Theorem 1.3 By induction on N we can easily prove that for N > 1 N 1 (q 1 ;q 2 ) 2 q 2 = (q;q2 ) 2 N 1 (2[2N 3]+q 2N 2 ) (q 2 ;q 2 ) 2 (q 2 ;q 2 ) 2 N 1 [ ] 2 2N 2 2[2N 3]+q 2N 2 =. (4.1) N 1 ( q;q) 4 N 1 [ 1 Note that 2N 2 ] [N] N 1 is the well-nown q-catalan number which is a polynomial in q (see [4]). Thus [N] divides [ ] 2N 2 N 1. Moreover it is easy to see that [N] is relatively prime to ( q;q) N 1 for odd N. We conclude that (1.4) holds by taing N = n in (4.1). Letting N = (n+3)/2 in (4.1) we obtain n+1 2 [ ] (q 1 ;q 2 ) 2 2 n+1 q 2 2[n]+q n+1 =. (q 2 ;q 2 ) 2 (n+1)/2 ( q;q) 4 (n+1)/2
It is clear that SOME NEW q-congruences FOR TRUNCATED BASIC SERIES 9 [(n+1)/2] [n] [ ][ ] n n 1 (n 1)/2 (n 1)/2 is a polynomial in q. Since the polynomials [(n + 1)/2] and [n] are relatively prime we deduce that [ n ] [ (n 1)/2 is divisible by [n] and so is n+1 ] (n+1)/2 = (1+q (n+1)/2 ) [ n (n 1)/2]. The proof of (1.5) then follows from the fact that [n] is relatively prime to ( q;q) (n+1)/2. 5. Proof of Theorem 1.4 By induction on n we can prove that for n 1 (q 1 q 2 ;q 3 ) (q 3 ;q 3 ) 2 q 3 = (2+q3n q q 2 q 3n 3 )(qq 2 ;q 3 ) n 1. (5.1) (1 q)(1 q 2 )(q 3 ;q 3 ) 2 n 1 We now assume that n 4 and gcd(n3) = 1. If n 1 (mod 3) then (q;q 3 ) n 1 contains the factor 1 q n and (q 2 ;q 3 ) n 1 contains the factor 1 q 2n and therefore (qq 2 ;q 3 ) n 1 is divisible by Φ n (q) 2. If n 2 (mod 3) then (q;q 3 ) n 1 contains 1 q 2n and (q 2 ;q 3 ) n 1 contains 1 q n and (qq 2 ;q 3 ) n 1 is also divisible by Φ n (q) 2. Clearly the denominator of the right-hand side of (5.1) is relatively prime to Φ n (q). This completes the proof. and 6. More congruences modulo Φ n (q) 2 The first author [8 Theorem 1.4] proved that for n > 1 (qqq 4 ;q 6 ) q 6 0 (mod Φ (q 6 ;q 6 ) 3 n (q) 2 ) if n 5 (mod 6) (6.1) (q 1 q 1 q 4 ;q 6 ) q 6 0 (mod Φ (q 6 ;q 6 ) 3 n (q) 2 ) if n 1 (mod 6). (6.2) Here we give generalizations of the congruences (6.1) and (6.2) as follows. Theorem 6.1. Let d 3 and let r be a nonzero integer with r < d and 2r ±d. Let n > 1 be an integer with n d r. Then (q r q r q d 2r ;q d ) q d 0 (mod Φ (q d ;q d ) 3 n (q) 2 ) for n r (mod d). (6.3) Proof. The proof is similar to that of Theorem 1.1 (or [8 Theorem 1.4]). Here we merely give the parametric generalization of (6.3): (a d 1 q r a 1 d q r q d 2r ;q d ) (a d 2 q d a 2 d q d q d ;q d ) q d 0 (mod (1 aq n )(a q n )).
10 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER Theorem 6.2. Let d 3 and let 0 < r < d with 2r d. Let n d+r be an integer. Then (q r q r q 2r d ;q d ) q d 0 (mod Φ (q d ;q d ) 3 n (q) 2 ) for n r (mod d). (6.4) Proof. This time the parametric generalization of (6.4) is as follows: (a d 1 q r a 1 d q r q 2r d ;q d ) (a d 2 q d a 2 d q d q d ;q d ) q d 0 (mod (1 aq n )(a q n )). 7. Concluding remars and open problems The creative microscoping method to prove Theorems 1.1 and 1.2 can be used to prove many other q-congruences (see [ ]). We also learned that this method has already caught the interests of Gorodetsy [5] Guillera [6] and Straub [19]. However to the best of our nowledge it can only be used to prove q-congruences modulo Φ n (q) 3 or Φ n (q) 2 but not those modulo Φ n (q) 4 or higher power of Φ n (q). The following conjectural refinements of Theorems 1.1 and 1.2 seem to be rather challenging to prove. Conjecture 7.1. Let d 5 be an odd integer. Then { [2d +1] (q;qd ) d 0 (mod q d(d 3) Φn (q) 3 ) if n 1 (mod d) (q d ;q d ) d 2 0 (mod Φ n (q) 4 ) if n 1 (mod d). 2 Conjecture 7.2. Let d 5 be an odd integer and let n > 1. Then { [2d 1] (q 1 ;q d ) d 0 (mod q d(d 1) Φn (q) 3 ) if n 1 (mod d) (q d ;q d ) d 2 0 (mod Φ n (q) 4 ) if n 1 (mod d). 2 The first author [8 Theorem 1.1] proved that for d 3 and n 1 (mod d) and that for nd 2 and n 1 (mod d) (q;q d ) d q d 0 (mod Φ (q d ;q d ) d n (q) 2 ); (7.1) (q 1 ;q d ) d q d 0 (mod Φ (q d ;q d ) d n (q) 2 ). (7.2) These two congruences were originally conjectured by the first author and Zudilin [13 Conjectures 5.3 and 5.4]. Here we would lie to mae some similar conjectures on congruences modulo Φ n (q) 2. Conjecture 7.3. Let d 3 and n > 1 be integers with n 1 (mod d(d+1)/2). Then (qq 2...q d ;q d(d+1)/2 ) q d(d+1)/2 0 (mod Φ (q d(d+1)/2 ;q d(d+1)/2 ) d n (q) 2 ).
SOME NEW q-congruences FOR TRUNCATED BASIC SERIES 11 Conjecture 7.4. Let d 2 and n > 1 be integers with n 1 (mod d(d+1)/2). Then (q 1 q 2...q d ;q d(d+1)/2 ) q d(d+1)/2 0 (mod Φ (q d(d+1)/2 ;q d(d+1)/2 ) d n (q) 2 ). We should concede that we are not able to prove Conjectures 7.3 and 7.4 even for d = 3 (we are only capable to deal with the modulus Φ n (q) case). Conjecture 7.4 is true for d = 2 by Theorem 1.4. Conjecture 7.5. Let d 3 and n > 1 be integers with n 1 (mod d 2 ). Then (qq 3...q 2d 1 ;q d2 ) q d2 0 (mod Φ (q d2 ;q d2 ) d n (q) 2 ). Conjecture 7.6. Let d 2 and n > 1 be integers with n 1 (mod d 2 ). Then Using the following identity (q 1 q 3...q 2d+1 ;q d2 ) q d2 0 (mod Φ (q d2 ;q d2 ) d n (q) 2 ). (q 1 q 3 ;q 4 ) (q 4 ;q 4 ) 2 q 4 = (2+q4n q q 3 q 4n 4 )(qq 3 ;q 4 ) n 1 (1 q)(1 q 3 )(q 4 ;q 4 ) 2 n 1 we can easily prove that Conjecture 7.6 is true for d = 2. It seems that Conjectures 7.3 and 7.4 can be further generalized as follows. Conjecture 7.7. Let d and r be positive integers with dr 3. Let n > 1 be an integer with n 1 (mod d(d+1)r/2). Then (qq 2...q d ;q d(d+1)r/2 ) r q d(d+1)r/2 0 (mod Φ (q d(d+1)r/2 ;q d(d+1)r/2 ) dr n (q) 2 ). Conjecture 7.8. Let d and r be positive integers with dr 2. Let n > 1 be an integer with n 1 (mod d(d+1)r/2). Then (q 1 q 2...q d ;q d(d+1)r/2 ) r q d(d+1)r/2 0 (mod Φ (q d(d+1)r/2 ;q d(d+1)r/2 ) dr n (q) 2 ). Liewise Conjectures 7.5 and 7.6 can be further generalized as follows. Conjecture 7.9. Let d and r be positive integers with dr 3. Let n > 1 be an integer with n 1 (mod d 2 r). Then (qq 3...q 2d 1 ;q d2r ) r (q d2 r ;q d2 r q d2r 0 (mod Φ ) dr n (q) 2 ).
12 VICTOR J. W. GUO AND MICHAEL J. SCHLOSSER Conjecture Let d and r be positive integers with dr 2. Let n > 1 be an integer with n 1 (mod d 2 r). Then (q 1 q 3...q 2d+1 ;q d2r ) r (q d2 r ;q d2 r q d2r 0 (mod Φ ) dr n (q) 2 ). Finally we point out that Conjectures are clearly true for d = 1 by the d r cases of (7.1) and (7.2).
