ON THE CHERN NUMBER INEQUALITIES SATISFIED BY ALL SMOOTH COMPLETE INTERSECTION THREEFOLDS WITH AMPLE CANONICAL CLASS arxiv: v1 [math.ag] 14 Sep 2014 MAO SHENG JINXING XU AND MINGWEI ZHANG Abstract. We obtain all linear Chern number inequalities satisfied by any smooth complete intersection threefold with ample canonical class. Keywords: Complete intersection threefolds Chern number inequalities Mathematics Subject Classification 2000: 14J30 1. Introduction This small note is motivated by finding a new Chern number inequality for a smooth projective threefold X with ample canonical bundle. Let c i = c i (T X ) be its Chern class for i = 123. Yau s famous inequality [4] in the three dimensional case says that 8c 1 c 2 3c 3 1 with equality iff X is uniformized by the complex ball. As it contains no c 3 term one may naturally wonder whether there exists a Chern number inequality involving c 3. This is possible because of the following result: Theorem 1.1 (Chang-Lopez Corollary 1.3 [2]). The region described by the Chern ratios ( c3 1 c c 1 c 2 3 c 1 c 2 ) of smooth irreducible threefolds with ample canonical bundle is bounded. However the result as well as its proof does not produce a new Chern number inequality even for the subclass of smooth complete intersections. Before the discovery of a new method to handle the general case it is valuable from a scientific standpoint to treat this subclass first by bare hands. This is what we are going to do here. Our method is to determine the convex hull in R 2 generated by Chern ratios c 3 c 1 c 2 ) of all smooth complete intersection threefolds with ample canonical ( c3 1 c 1 c 2 class. Let n be a natural number. A smooth complete intersection(abbreviated as SCI) threefold X in P n+3 is cut out by n hypersurfaces and a nondegenerate one i.e. not contained inahyperplane by nhypersurfaces ofdegrees d 1 +1 d n +1 with d i 1 for 1 i n. The Chern numbers for a smooth X is uniquely determined by the tuple (d 1 d n ). Therefore we may use the notation Q(n;d 1 d n ) = ( c3 1 c 3 ) R 2 c 1 c 2 c 1 c 2 1

2 MAO SHENG JINXING XU AND MINGWEI ZHANG for Chern ratios of X. Note that X has ample canonical class if and only if n i=1 d i 5. Put Q = {Q(n;d 1 d n ) n 1d i 1 Let P be the convex hull of Q. n d i 5} R 2. Theorem 1.2. P is a rational polyhedra with infinitely many faces. The corners of P are given by the following points: i=1 Q(1;5) = ( 1 43) Q(2;23) = ( 1 19) Q(3;233) = ( 1 13) Q(3;222) = 8 4 ( and Q(n;1 1) = ( 2( 4+n) n 3n 2 +n 3 ) with n n+n 2 3( 4+n)(12 5n+n 2 ) Remark 1.3. In another work of M.-C. Chang [1] she described a region R in the plane of Chern ratios such that any rational point in R can be realized by a SCI threefold with ample canonical bundle; Outside R there are infinitely many Chern ratios of smooth complete intersection threefolds but no accumulating points. These two results are related but do not imply each other. See FIGURE??. We proceed to deduce our main application of the above result. According to the values of their x-coordinates we label the corner points of P as follows: p 1 = Q(1;5) p 2 = Q(2;23) p 3 = Q(3;233) p 4 = Q(5;11111) p 5 = Q(3;222) p n = Q(n;1 1)n 6. The sequence of points {p n } converges to the point p = (2 1 3 ). The closure of P denoted by P contains the points p n (n 1)p as its corners. For two distinct points pq R 2 denote the line through pq by L pq and the line segment connecting p q by pq. Denote the expressions of lines as follows: L p1 p : y = k 0 x+b 0 The values of k m b m are: L pmp m+1 : y = k m x+b m m 1. (k 0 b 0 ) = ( ) (k b 1 ) = ( 428) (k 2 b 2 ) = ( 226) (k 3 b 3 ) = ( 145) (k 4 b 4 ) = ( 9 41) (k b 5 ) = ( 133) 5 28m+m 2 +4m 3 m 4 k m = m 6 ( 4+m)( 3+m)( 20 5m+3m 2 ) b m = m+3m2 50m 3 +9m 4 m 6. 3( 4+m)( 3+m)( 20 5m+3m 2 ) The sequence of lines L pmp m+1 converges to the line where k = 1 3 b = 1. L : y = k x+b 12 )

CHERN NUMBER INEQUALITIES 3 Theorem 1.4. Let C be the convex cone of linear inequalities satisfied by the Chern numbers of each SCI threefold with ample canonical bundle. That is C = {(λ 1 λ 2 λ 3 ) R 3 λ 1 c 3 1 (X)+λ 2c 1 (X)c 2 (X)+λ 3 c 3 (X) 0 Then C is a rational convex cone with edges for any SCI threefold X with K X > 0.} ( k 0 b 0 1) (k m b m 1)(m 1) (k b 1) where by an edge we mean a one dimensional face. Proof. Let Č R3 be the closure of the convex cone generated by the set {(c 3 1 (X)c 1(X)c 2 (X)c 3 (X)) R 3 X is a SCI threefold with K X > 0.} Note that if X is a SCI threefold with K X > 0 then c 1 (X)c 2 (X) < 0. Indeed Yau s inequality gives us 8c 1 (X)c 2 (X) 3c 1 (X) 3 and the ampleness of canonical bundle implies the inequality c 3 1 (X) < 0. Since c 1 (X)c 2 (X) < 0 it can be easily seen that Č = {(λxλλy) λ R 0 (xy) P}. By definition C is the dual cone of Č. By Theorem 1.2 the codimensional one faces of Č are exactly the hyperplanes in R 3 determined by the vectors ( k 0 b 0 1) (k m b m 1)(m 1) (k b 1). From the duality of C and Č we get that ( k 0 b 0 1) (k m b m 1)(m 1) (k b 1) are exactly the edges (one-dimensional faces) of C. Corollary 1.5. If X is a SCI threefold with K X > 0 then its Chern numbers satisfy the inequality 86c 3 1 c 3 < c3 1 6 with the equality 86c 3 1 = c 3 holds if and only if X is isomorphic to a degree 6 hypersurface in P 4. Proof. It can be checked that ( k 0 b 0 1) (k 1b 1 1) = ( 8601). By Theorem 1.4 ( 8601) C hence we have with equality holds iff c 3 86c ( c3 1 c 3 ) = L p1 p c 1 c 2 c 1 c L p1 p 2 = Q(1;5) 2 which is equivalent to that X is isomorphic to a degree 6 hypersurface in P 4. Similarly ( k 0 b 0 1) (k b 1) = ( ). By Theorem 1.4 we have 1 6 c3 1 c 3 0

4 MAO SHENG JINXING XU AND MINGWEI ZHANG with equality holds iff ( c3 1 c 3 ) = L p1 p c 1 c 2 c 1 c L = p. 2 Since p is not in Q the inequality 1 6 c3 1 c 3 0 is in fact strict. Remark 1.6. In [3] the authors prove that for a smooth projective threefold X admitting a smooth fibration of minimal surfaces of general type over a curve it holds that c 3 (X) 1 18 c3 1 (X). According to Corollary 1.5 this inequality can never be satisfied for a SCI threefold with ample canonical bundle. As pointed out by Professor Kang Zuo this is actually explained by the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem. Indeed the hyperbolicity of the moduli space of minimal surfaces of general type means that the base curve of a smooth fibration is a hyperbolic curve and hence the fundamental group of the total space X is nontrivial in contrast with the triviality of the fundamental group of a SCI implied by the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem. 2. Proof of the Theorem Suppose n N is a positive integer and d 1 d n R 0 are nonnegative real numbers. Let s j = n i=1 dj i j 1. We define c 1 (n;d 1 d n ) := 4 s 1 c 2 (n;d 1 d n ) := s2 1 +s 2 2 3(s 1 2) c 3 (n;d 1 d n ) := s3 1 +3s 1 s 2 +2s 3 +(s s 2) 3s If d 1 = = d n = d we denote c i (n;d 1 d n ) by c i (n;d) i = 123. The following result is standard. Lemma 2.1. Let X be a SCI threefold in P n+3. If X is a complete intersection of hypersurfaces with degrees d d n +1 and d i 1 1 i n then the Chern classes of X are: c i (X) = c i (n;d 1 d n ) i = 123. We divide the proof of Theorem 1.2 into three steps corresponding to three sections. Step 1: In section 2.1 we firstly prove the x-coordinate of any point in Q is between the x-coordinates of p 1 and p. Then we prove any point of Q is below the line L p1 p. Step 2: In section 2.2 we prove that any point of Q is above the line L pmp m+1 m 6. Step3: Insection2.3 weprovethat i = 1 5ifapointQ(n;d 1 d n ) Q hasx-coordinatelessthanorequaltothex-coordinateofp 6 thenq(n;d 1 d n ) lies above the line segment p i p i+1. After the three steps above it is obviously we have finished the proof of Theorem 1.2.

CHERN NUMBER INEQUALITIES 5 Ideas of the proof in each step: In steps 1 and 2 the idea of the proof is the following: Given a line L : y = kx+b in R 2 to prove Q is below L is equivalent to verify nd i N n i=1 d i 5 c 3 (n;d 1 d n ) kc 3 1(n;d 1 d n ) bc 1 (n;d 1 d n )c 2 (n;d 1 d n ) 0 and by the following Lemma 2.2 it suffices to verify n Nd Rd 1nd Nnd 5 c 3 (n;d) kc 3 1 (n;d) bc 1(n;d)c 2 (n;d) 0. Similarly in order to prove Q is above a line y = kx + b it suffices to verify n Nd Rd 1nd Nnd 5 kc 3 1(n;d)+bc 1 (n;d)c 2 (n;d) c 3 (n;d) 0. Lemma 2.2. Let λµν R be constants. m N we have inf{λc 3 1 (n;d 1 d n )+µc 1 (n;d 1 d n )c 2 (n;d 1 d n )+νc 3 (n;d 1 d n ) n n Nd i R d i = md i 1 i = 1 n.} i=1 inf{λc 3 1 (n;d)+µc 1(n;d)c 2 (n;d)+νc 3 (n;d) n Nd Rnd = md 1.} Proof. This lemma is a direct consequence of the following elementary proposition. Proposition 2.3. Let d 1 d 2 d n be nonnegative real numbers s j = n i=1 dj i j = 123 and λµ R be constants. For fixed n and s 1 there exists a natural number k n such that the function λs 2 +µs 3 attains its minimal value when d 1 = = d k = 0 and d k+1 = = d n = s 1 n k. In step 3 we firstly prove that there are only finite points of Q with x-coordinates less than or equal to the x-coordinate of p 6 then we verify case-by-case that if a point of Q has x-coordinate less than or equal to the x-coordinate of p 6 it lies above the union of line segments 5 i=1 p ip i We first give an estimate of the x-coordiantes of points in Q. Lemma 2.4. The x-coordinate of any point of Q is between the x-coordiantes of p 1 and p. Proof. Recall the x-coordinates of p 1 and p are 1 and 2 respectively. For any 16 point Q(n;d 1 d n ) in Q by Lemma 2.1 its x-coordinate is c 1 (n;d 1 d n ) 3 c 1 (n;d 1 d n )c 2 (n;d 1 d n ) = 2(4 s 1 ) 2 s 2 1 +s 2 6(s 1 2) where s j = n i=1 d i j = 12. What we want to prove is equivalent to (4 s 1 ) 2 s 2 1 +s 2 6(s 1 2) 2 Since s 1 5 the inequalities above can be verified easily.

6 MAO SHENG JINXING XU AND MINGWEI ZHANG Recall the line L p1 p has the expression y = k 0 x+b 0 where k 0 = 242b 93 0 = 515 According to the argument before Lemma 2.2 in order to prove Q is below L p1 p it suffices to prove the following : Lemma 2.5. n Nd Rnd Nnd 5d 1 f(nd) := c 3 (n;d) k 0 c 3 1 (n;d) b 0c 1 (n;d)c 2 (n;d) 0. Proof. Let s 1 = nd we have f(nd) = f(s 1 d) = 1 93 ( s 1 937ds 1 31d 2 s s ds 2 1). Since f(s 1 d) is a quadratic polynomial of d with negative leading term and 1 d s 1 we have f(s 1 d) Min{ f(s 1 1) f(s 1 s 1 )}. By computations f(s 1 1) = 1 ( s s 2 1 ) f(s 1 s 1 ) = 5 ( s s s3 1 ). It is elementary to verify the above two polynomials of s 1 are nonnegative when s 1 N and s 1 5. Hence f(nd) = f(s 1 d) 0 n Nd Rnd Nnd 5d In this section we prove that Q is above the line L pmp m+1 m 6. Recall the line L pmp m+1 has an expression y = k m x+b m where k m = 28m+m 2 +4m 3 m 4 ( 4+m)( 3+m)( 20 5m+3m 2 ) b m = m+3m2 50m 3 +9m 4 3( 4+m)( 3+m)( 20 5m+3m 2 ). According to the argument before Lemma 2.2 to prove Q is above the line L pmp m+1 we need to study the nonnegativity of the function f(mnd) := k m c 3 1 (n;d)+b mc 1 (n;d)c 2 (n;d) c 3 (n;d). We have the following lemma. Lemma 2.6. f(mnd) 0 if one of the following conditions holds: (1) mn Nd Rd 1nd Nnd 5m 10; (2) mn Nd Rd 1nd Nnd 11m = Proof. Lets 1 = nd. Inthenewvariablems 1 d wedenotethefunctionf(mnd) by f(ms 1 d) then by the expressions of k m b m and c i (n;d) f(ms 1 d) =f(mnd) =k m (4 s 1 ) 3 +b m (4 s 1 )( s s 1 +6)+ s3 1 6 s2 1 +3s s 1d 2 3 +(s2 1 2 s 1 + b m(4 s 1 )s 1 )d. 2 Suppose condition (1) holds since f(ms 1 d) is a quadratic polynomial of d we have two cases: 93.

CHERN NUMBER INEQUALITIES 7 Case I: (s 2 1/2 s 1 +b m (4 s 1 )s 1 /2) 1. In this case f(ms1 d) f(ms 1 1) = f(ms 1 1) and f(ms 1 1) 0 is equivalent to that the point Q(s 1 ;1 1) lies above the line L pmp m+1 which can be easily verified under the condition s 1 5. Case II: (s 2 1 /2 s 1 +b m (4 s 1 )s 1 /2) 1. In this case s 1 12bm 2 3b m 3 and By computations we get f(ms 1 d) f(ms 1 (s2 1 /2 s 1 +b m (4 s 1 )s 1 /2) ). g(ms 1 ) :=12( 4+m) 2 ( 3+m) 2 ( 20 5m+3m 2 ) 2 f(ms 1 (s2 1/2 s 1 +b m (4 s 1 )s 1 /2) ) is a cubic polynomial of s 1 with polynomial coefficients of m. We only need to verify the positivity of g(ms 1 ). Again by computations we get that if m Nm 10 then g 3b m 3 ) > 0 g s 1 3b m 3 ) > 0 2 g s 2 1 3b m 3 ) > 0 3 g s 3 1 3b m 3 ) > 0. Note g(ms 1 ) is a cubic polynomial of s 1 the positivity of g(ms 1 ) follows from the above computations and we have verified the conclusion under condition (1). Suppose condition (2) holds by computations we have 12b m 2 3b m 3 < 10 m = This inequality and condition (2) imply s 1 > 12bm 2 3b m 3 Again let 12bm 2 +1 > 3b m 3. We have f(ms 1 d) f(ms 1 (s2 1 /2 s 1 +b m (4 s 1 )s 1 /2) ). g(ms 1 ) :=12( 4+m) 2 ( 3+m) 2 ( 20 5m+3m 2 ) 2 f(ms 1 (s2 1 /2 s 1 +b m (4 s 1 )s 1 /2) )

8 MAO SHENG JINXING XU AND MINGWEI ZHANG which isacubic polynomial ofs 1. Weonlyneed to show thepositivity of g(ms 1 ). By direct computations g 3b m 3 +1) > 0 g +1) > 0 s 1 3b m 3 2 g s 2 1 3b m 3 +1) > 0 3 g +1) > 0. s 3 1 3b m 3 Since g(ms 1 ) is a cubic polynomial of s 1 the positivity of g(ms 1 ) follows from the above computations. And we have verified the conclusion under condition (2). From Lemma 2.2 and Lemma 2.6 we get that Q(n;d 1 d n ) Q lies above the line L pmp m+1 if one of the following conditions holds: (1) m 10; (2) m = 6789 n i=1 d i 11. A case-by-case verification shows that if 5 n i=1 d i 10 then Q(n;d 1 d n ) lies above the line L pmp m+1 m = So we have verified Q lies above the line L pmp m+1 m In this section we prove that i = 1 5 if a point Q(n;d 1 d n ) Q hasx-coordinatelessthanorequaltothex-coordinateofp 6 thenq(n;d 1 d n ) lies above the line segment p i p i+1. Note that the x-coordinate of p 6 is 4. The following lemma tells us that there are 9 only finite points in Q with x-coordinate less than or equal to the x-coordinate of p 6. Lemma 2.7. If s 1 = n i=1 d i 10 then c 1 (n;d 1 d n ) 3 c 1 (n;d 1 d n )c 2 (n;d 1 d n ) = (4 s 1 ) 2 (s 2 1 +s 2)/2 3(s 1 2) > 4 9. Proof. Since s 2 1 s 2 we have s 1 10 s s > 0 5s s > 0 7s s > 2s 2 1 7s s > 2s 2 (4 s 1 ) 2 (s 2 1 +s 2 )/2 3(s 1 2) > 4 9. A case-by-case verification shows that the finite points {Q(nd 1 d n )5 n i=1 d i 9} lie above the lines {L pi p i+1 1 i 5}. By these verifications and the above lemma we have shown that once the x-coordinate of a point Q(n;d 1 d n ) is less than or equal to that of p 6 it lies above the line L pi p i+1 1 i 5. This completes the proof of Theorem 1.2.
