3 Introduction & Outline Violation of Lepton Universality: Predicted by practically every New Physics model. Kaon physics: Two main possibilites to test Lepton Universality: K l3 decays K l2 decays K e3 /K µ3, form factors K e2 /K µ2 So far precisions poor (compared to e.g. pion decay), tests on levels of 1-2% (K l3 ) or even 4% (K e2 /K µ2 ). Since 2005: Many new data available (blue: first reported at KAON07) K l3 : KLOE (K ± e3, K± µ3, K L,l3 form factors), ISTRA+ (K e3 ), NA48 (K ± e3, K± µ3, K L,µ3 form factors). K e2 /K µ2 : 2 NA48/2, KLOE. Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.3/32

5 K l3 Introduction Expectations in for LFV in K l3 : Test for LFV in the vector current (different from K l2, π l2 decays!). = To be compared with searches for LFV in τ decays: τ eν ν/τ µν ν = g 2 µ/g 2 e = ± SM transitions proceed via tree-level diagrams: Possible violations of Lepton Universality from New Physics will always be small. = Precision measurements necessary! Two possibilities to search for violation of Lepton Universality: Deviation of Γ(K µ3 )/Γ(K e3 ) from SM prediction. Possible differences in form factors between K µ3 and K e3. Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.5/32

S EW = : short-distance EW correction. f + (0): hadronic matrix element at q 2 = 0 (different for K ±, K 0 ). I l K = Il K (λ +, λ 0 ): integral of form factors over phase space. (1 + δk l ) δSU(2) l + 2δl EM : form factor corrections for SU(2) breaking and long-distance EM interactions. Lepton flavour independent: Lepton flavour dependent: C K, S EW, δ l SU(2) I l K, δl EM In case of Lepton Non-Universality: G µ F Ge F Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.6/32
7 K l3 Widths and Lepton Universality EM corrections are small (Cirigliano et al. 11 Determination of Γ(K µ3 )/Γ(K e3 ) K ± modes: r ± µe = (87) (was 1.019(13) before) Error dominated by experiments (incl. scale factors). Combination of both modes: r µe = (50) (taking into account ρ = 0.12) = No indication of Lepton universality violation. Conclusions on Γ(K µ3 )/Γ(K e3 ): Kaon sensitivity coming closer to τ decays! No stringent tests of right-handed quark couplings so far! Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.17/32

RH currents would cause a deviation. lnc = lnf( Kπ ) can be measured using dispersive approach for form factor parametrization. 19 Non-SM Interactions in K l3 Conclusions on Right-Handed Quark Currents: NA48 sees effect ( 5σ) in K µ3 at the Callan-Treiman point. No other experiment has (yet) performed a fit with dispersive parametrization. However: Other experiments disagree with NA48 in slope λ 0 of scalar form factor. Correlation between λ 0 and lnc unclear. Data of other experiments need to be investigated. 4.5 KTeV (2004) ISTRA+ (2004) NA48 (2007) KLOE (2007), prel λ 0 [ 10-3 ] Situation not yet clarified. E. 21 K e2 /K µ2 Introduction Standard Model Prediction: R K = Γ(K e2 )/Γ(K µ2 ) text book exercise for helicity suppression, but must include radiative corrections: (M. Finkemeier, PLB 387 (1996)) R K = R (0) K (1 + δrrad.corr. K ) = ( ± ) = (2.472 ± 0.001) 10 5 = SM prediction has precision of 0.04%! Caveat: Radiative corrections model dependent (VMD). More thorough χpt study underway (Cirigliano). Possibilities for non-sm Physics in K e2 /K µ2 : K e2 is strongly suppressed and extremely well-known in the SM = Non-SM effects a priori are easier to detect than in e.g. K l3. SUSY: LFV H ± couplings may enhance/lower SM K e2 decay width by up to 2 3%. (Masiero, Paradisi, Petronzio (2006) = P.Paradisi, KAON07) Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.21/32
22 K e2 /K µ2 Measurements PDG 2006: Three measurements from the 1970 s Γ(K e2 )/Γ(K µ2 ) = (2.45 ± 0.11) 10 5 Three new preliminary measurements: NA48/2 (2003 data), presented in 2005: About 4000 signal events from normal running period. Systematics dominated by trigger efficiencies. Γ(K e2 )/Γ(K µ2 ) = (2.416 ± ± 0.024) 10 5 NA48/2 (2004 data), presented at KAON07: About 4000 signal events from special minimum bias trigger. Small systematics, except background. (measured from data large statistical uncertainty in syst. error.) Completely uncorrelated with 2003 measurement. Γ(K e2 )/Γ(K µ2 ) = (2.455 ± ± 0.041) 10 5 Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.22/32
23 K e2 /K µ2 Measurements KLOE, presented at KAON07: About 8000 signal events from 1.7 fb 1. Statistics dominated by MC, conservative systematics estimation. Γ(K e2 )/Γ(K µ2 ) = (2.55 ± 0.05 ± 0.05) 10 5 Treatment of radiative corrections: SM prediction includes IB, excludes DE. All experiments measure inclusive Γ(K e2(γ) )/Γ(K µ2(γ) ), but correct for DE contributions. Direct Emission Inner Bremsstrahlung = Can easily be combined and compared with SM expectation. * E [GeV] γ Rainer Wanke, Universität Mainz, KAON 2007, Frascati, May 24, 2007 p.23/32
