Mathematical Structures defied by Idetities III Costati M. Petridi arxiv: v1 [math.lo] 2 Ju Itroductio Abstract.We exted the theory (formal part oly) of algebras with oe biary operatio (our paper arxiv:math/ v1 [math.ra] 31 Oct 2001) to algebras with several operatios of ay arity. We refer to our papers [1] ad [2] for cocepts, otatios, defiitios, otes ad remars. I subsectio 4.1 of [1] we briefly outlied our ideas of geeralizig the method of tableaux to algebras with several operatios V 1 (x 1, x 2,, x α1 ), V 2 (x 1, x 2,, x α2 ),, V (x 1, x 2,, x α ) satisfyig axiomatically defied idetities ad idicated the way of how to proceed. The project isow carried out. The techique applied isthe same asi Formal Part of [1]. The crucial fact that the umber I V 1V 2V of formally reducible idetities ca be calculated by exactly the same method used for I V 1 (= I ) seems to hold true. Algebras with oly biary operatios are discussed. For algebras with two biary operatios V(x, y) ad W(x, y) the proof is give i detail. Algebraswithoperatiosofayaritycabetreatedbyreductiotoawell defied set of algebras with biary operatios. Research ad expositio of the geeral theory are impeded by problems of costructio ad ispectio of the tableaux T wheever is greater tha 3. This is due to the fast growth of the Catala umbers (S 4 ) ad their geeralizatios, let aloe problems of pritig ad publicatio. Programs desiged to see π the structures resultig from a give idetity failed after a few steps (blow-ups). Expositio therefore is limited to illustrate the theory o the wored example of tableau T 3. Still, the cocrete ew fidigs reached i this case corroborate further our fudametal thesis that there is a scarcity of existig mathematical structures i the sese that the frequecy of irreducible idetities goes to zero with icreasig. See historically, this also explais why mathematics, i the course of time, has developed the way it did with associativity V(V(x, y), z) = V(x, V(y, z)), the simplest structure, reigig supreme over the mathematical ladscape. All other essetial mathematical structures, foud or created by research such as e.g. 1
Groups, Fields, Vector Spaces, Lie Algebras, etc,... iclude i their axiom system (sigature) at least oe biary operatio obeyig the law of associativity. We coclude with a ote o the coectio with Formal Laguages. 2 Operatios ad their Iterates Give operatios V α 1 1 (x 1, x 2,, x α1 ) of arity α 1, V α 2 2 (x 1, x 2,, x α2 ) of arity α 2,..., V α (x 1, x 2,, x α ) of arity α, their iterates cotaiig the operatiov α 1 1 p 1 times, theoperatiov α 2 2 p 2 times,, theoperatiov α p times are symbolized by J i The order of the iterate is ( V α 1 1 V α 2 2 V α ), α p 1 p 2 p i 0, p i 0. ad the umber of its variable places is = p 1 +p 2 ++p (α 1 1)p 1 +(α 2 1)p 2 ++α (p 1)+1. The idex i rus from 1 to. We call of the structure. the -th Catala umber The umbers fuctio The sequece +1 = arethe Taylor coefficiets, att = 0, ofthe formalgeeratig φ V1V (t) = =0 t. ca be calculated recursively from x 1 +x 2 ++x α1 = x i 0 x 1 +x 2 ++x α2 = x i 0 x 1 +x 2 ++x α = x i 0 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 2 x 2 x 2 x α1 + x α2 + x α. Accordig to E. Catala 1 the umber of solutios of the Diophatie equatio x 1 +x 2 ++x αi = is ( a i ) See L.E. Dicso: History of the theory of umbers, Vol.2 2
The fuctio φ V1V (t) is a solutio of the fuctioal equatio φ V1V (t) 1 t with the iitial coditio ϕ(0) = 1. = (φ V1V (t)) α i. i=1 For = 1, α 1 = 2 we get the classical Catala umbers S = 1 +1( 2 ), which cout the iterates (parethesizig) of V 1 (x, y). Their recursio formula is S V 1 +1 = ad the fuctioal equatio becomes x 1 +x 2 = x i 0 S V 1 x 1 S V 1 x 2 givig φ V1 (t) 1 t = (φ V1 (t)) 2, φ V1 (t) = 1 1 4t 2t = =0 S t. ( 1 For = 1, α 1 = α we obtai the higher Catala umbers α (α 1)+1 ) whose geeratig fuctio φ α (t) satisfies φ α (t) 1 t = (φ α (t)) α. 3 Biary Operatios We will ow examie the case of two biary operatios V(x, y) ad W(x, y). Sice = 2, α 1 = α 2 = 2 the correspodig geeratig fuctio which gives the umber of iterates of order is φ VW (t) 1 t Solvig the quadratic equatio we obtai = 2(φ VW (t)) 2, φ(0) = 1. φ VW (t) = 1 1 8t 4t = 2 S t, =0 where S = 1 +1( 2 ) are the ordiary Catala umbers. Hece the umber of iterates of order is S VW = 2 S, 1, the first of which 3
are S VW Followig the same rules of formatio as doe i [1], the first three A tableaux are.. T 1 Vxx Wxx T 2 VVxxx WVxxx VWxx WWxxx VxVxx WxVxx VxWxx WxWxx VVVxxxx VVWxxxx VVxVxxx VVxWxxx VVxxVxx VVxxWxx WVVxxxx WVWxxxx WVxVxxx WVxWxxx WVxxVxx WVxxWxx T 3 VVxxWxx VWxxWxx VxWVxxx VxWWxxx VxWxVxx VxWxWxx WVxxWxx WWxxWxx WxWVxxx WxWWxxx WxWxVxx WxWxWxx Because of lac of space, i T 3 figure oly the first two ad the last two colums, the four colums i the middle havig beig omitted. After labelig these word expressios from 1 to 40, the tableaux ca be perused 2 easily as see below. T 1 T 2 T The geeral tableau of order has 2 lies ad 2 1 S 1 colums, that is a total of 2 S 1 etries. For 3 it is easy to see that some iterates appear i 2 The importace of perusal ad ispectio of tables was aptly poited out by D.H. Lehmer i hia article MAA Studies i Mathematics, Vol 6,
tableau T with multiplicities higher tha 1, as ca be verified i tableau T 3. To prove it we have to show that 2 S 1 > 2 S for 3. The easy proof is as follows. Usig the recursio S = 2(2 1) +1 S 1 for the Catala umbers we have 2 S 1 > 2 S S 1 > 2(2 1) +1 S 1 (+1) > 2(2 1). The last iequality beig true for 3, applicatio of the pigeohole priciple does the rest. All cocepts ad defiitios of [1] relatig to oe biary operatio V(x, y) ca be carried over literally to the preset case. Regrettably, because of the reasos explaied i sectio 1, we were uable to go further tha tableau T 3. We were lucy, however, to discover that already for the icidece matrix of this tableau the fudametal theorem of subsectio 2.4 of [1], which is the ey eablig to calculate the umber I of formally reducible idetities, remais true. Because of the highly peculiar ature of this property we surmise that it is equally true for all higher tableaux T. For easy referece we repeat the theorem hereuder. Theorem 1 Let 1. δ(j i, J j ) = { 1if J i = J j reducible 0if J i = J j irreducible 2. M(J i ) = the multiplicity of J i i tableau A 3. I = S i,j δ(j i, J j ) = the umber of reducible idetities 4. S j=1 δ(j i, J j ) = the umber of reducible idetities o the i th lie of the icidece matrix of tableau A, the S j=1 δ(j i, J j ) = M(J i ) ν=1 ( 1) ν 1 ( M(J i ) ν ) S ν. Expressed i words the theorem says that the umber of reducible idetities o the i lie of the icidece matrix of tableau A does ot deped o Ji but oly o its multiplicity M(Ji ). A immediate cosequece is that I = [ +1 2 ] ( ( T ( 1) ν 1 ν =1 ν=1 5 ) S ν )
where T is the umber of iterates itableaut havig multiplicity. As proved i [1] I is I = o(1 e 16 ) ad the scarcity of the reducible idetities is eviced by S 2 I = o(e 26 ). We ow will prove the truth of this theorem for tableau T 3. To this ed we have calculated the icidece matrix relative to tableau T 3 as show i Exhibit attached hereto. The proof leaps to the eye. Ideed, the four iterates J5 3 = 5, J3 6 = 6, J3 7 = 7, J8 3 = 8 have all multiplicity 2, givig a sum 1 = 14. Similarly for the iterates J13 3, J3 14, J3 15, J3 16. All other 32 iterates have multiplicity 1 with a sum 1 = 8. Hece the umber I VW 3 of reducible 3 idetities is ad the relative frequecy is I VW 3 = = 368 I3 VW (2 3 S 3 ) = = The mai objective is of course to prove that lim I VW (2 S ) 2 = 1, which would imply that irreducible idetities are gettig scarce with icreasig. Expressed otherwise, this would mea that there are o algebras defied by legthy idetities ivolvig two biary operatios. The caseofalgebraswithmorethatwo biaryoperatiosv 1, V 2,, V λ, λ > 2, ca be dealt with i the same way we did for λ = 2. The fuctioal equatio for the geeratig fuctio φ V1,V 2,,V λ (t) turs out to be φ V1 V 2V λ (t) 1 = λ(φ V1 V t 2V λ (t)) 2 which after solvig gives the correspodig Catala umbers of the structure S V 1V 2V λ = λ S (S = th Catala umber). 4 Operatios of ay arity A direct approach to form the tableaux for several operatios of arities higher tha two is well igh impossible without powerful computer programs. If at all eve the. We may circumvet, however, the obstacle by reducig the problem to the biary case as follows. 6
Give the operatios V α 1 (x 1, x 2,, x α1 ) V α 2 (x 1, x 2,, x α2 ) V αm (x 1, x 2,, x αm ) we form their respective ( α i 2), projectios o the subspaces of the variable places V α 1 jj (x, y) = V α 1 (c,, c, x, c,, c x c,, c), }{{}}{{}}{{} i j tae over all solutios of i+j + = α 1 2, jj (x, y) = V α 2 (c,, c, x, c,, c x c,, c), }{{}}{{}}{{} i j V α 2 tae over all solutios of i+j + = α 2 2, V αm jj (x, y) = V αm (c,, c, x, c,, c x c,, c), }{{}}{{}}{{} i j tae over all solutios of i+j + = α m 2. Sice all these projectios are biary operatios we ca apply to them the results of the previous sectio 3 ad coclude that the fudametal theorem holds true. 5 Coectio with Formal Laguages See from the agle of Formal Laguages, a set of operatios ad their iterates is just the Laguage L geerated by the grammar G(V α 1 1,V α 2 2,...,V α,x) with ad the derivatio rules of words x L : the startig word If If If W 1 L W 2 L... W L The V α 1 1 W x1 Wx 2...W xα1 L The V α 2 2 W y1 Wy 2...W yα2 L
The V α W z 1 Wz 2...W zα L where the idexes x 1,...x α1, y 1,...y α2,...z 1,...z α, ru over all permutatios with repetitios of {1,2,...,}. The reverse is also true. If i the alphabet of the grammar all o-termial symbols are replaced by x ad the termial symbols are replaced respectively by V α 1 1,V α 2 2,...V α we obtai the structure with operatios V α 1 1,V α 2 2,...V α. For further readig o the subject see sub-sectio 4.2 of [1]. Whether precise aalytical results, aalogous to those of [1] ad the preset paper, hold for all Formal Laguages as well as their uses i Iformatio Theory is, to our owledge, a ope field to be explored. 8
Exhibit Icidece matrix δ(j 3 i, J 3 j) relative to T 3 (J 3 i is deoted by i. Blac spaces mea 0 s) i\j i 1 M(J3 i ) From above table we get I VW 3 = i=1 1 = 368 j=1 9
