Spatial Pattern s and D ynam ic M echan ism s of Urban Land Use Growth L IU Sheng2he ( Institute of Geograph ical Sciences and N atural R esources R esearch, CA S, Beijing Ch ina) Abstract: T h rough carrying ou t a system atical review on the research p rogress of variou s W estern academ ic schoo ls on spatial pattern s and dynam ic m echan ism s of u rban land u se grow th, th is paper h igh ligh ts that its focu s has sh ifted from summ arizing spatial evo lu tionary models to exp lo ring dynam ic m echan ism s du ring the decision2m ak ing p rocess of land developm en t, from free land m arket to sm art grow th m anagem en ṫ H isto rical experiences at hom e and aboard demon strate that, w h ile the monopo ly adm in istrative allocation system w ou ld fo rce u rban land u se developm en t to becom e an affiliated part of adm in istrative pow ers and resu lt in inefficiency and inequality, the free m arket m echan ism w ou ld p robab ly push u rban land developm en t to becom e an grow th m ach ine so lely con tro lled by the mo tivation of p rofit2m ak ing and deliberately destroy un2 renew ab le resou rces and am enab le eco logical environm en ṫ T herefo re, in o rder to rea lize su sta inab le u rban developm en t and coo rd ina te the conflicts among u rban developm en t, con servation of cu ltivated land, and con struction of eco logical environm en t, Ch ina shou ld, on one side, con tinue to accelerate its refo rm on u rban land u se system to sign ifican tly increase the impo rtance of the m arket m echan ism on u rban land developm en t, and estab lish an equal and efficien t supervising m echan ism on the operation of u rban land m arket, on the o ther side, strengthen the m acro2m anagem en t funct ion of the Governm en ta l agencies and ra t iona lly con t ro l u rban land u se g row th mo tivated by the m arket m echan ism th rough variou s grow th m anagem en t po licies.
