2 AP Physics Prerequisite: Algebra II/Trig Be in compliance with the SSD Honors and AP Criteria Policy AP Physics 1 is a full year, algebra-based physics course, equivalent to the first semester of a typical introductory, algebra-based college physics course. It meets for 46 minute periods each day for the entire school year with additional weekly laboratory periods. The students will participate in inquiry-based explorations to gain a more conceptual understanding of physics concepts. Students will spend less of their time in traditional formula-based learning and more of their effort will be directed to developing critical thinking and reasoning skills. The AP Physics course is designed around the six and seven identified by the College Board in the AP Physics Curriculum Framework that bring together the fundamental science principles and theories of general physics. These big ideas are intended to encourage students to think about physics concepts as interconnected pieces of a puzzle. The solution to the puzzle is how the real world around them actually works. The seven combine with Essential Knowledge to create Learning Objectives which provide clear and detailed articulation of what students should know and be able to do. Big Idea 1: Objects and systems have properties such as mass and charge. Systems may have internal structure. Big Idea 2: Fields existing in space can be used to explain interactions. Big Idea 3: Big Idea 4: Big Idea 5: Big Idea 6: Waves can transfer energy and momentum from one location to another without the permanent transfer of mass and serve as a mathematical model for the description of other phenomena. AP Physics Page 1
3 Practice 1: The student can use representations and models to communicate scientific phenomena and solve scientific problems. Practice 2: The student can use mathematics appropriately. Practice 3: The student can engage in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide investigations within the context of the AP course. Practice 4: The student can plan and implement data collection strategies in relation to a particular scientific question. Practice 5: The student can perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence. Practice 6: The student can work with scientific explanations and theories. Practice 7: The student is able to connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts, and representations in and across domains. AP Physics Page 2
