Gnral rlativistic spinning fluids with a modifid projction tnsor Mortza Mohsni Physics Dpartmnt, Payam Noor Univrsity, Thran, Iran arxiv: v1 [gr-qc] 18 May 2010 Sptmbr 8, 2018 Abstract An nrgy-momntum tnsor for gnral rlativistic spinning fluids compatibl with Tulczyjw-typ supplmntary condition is drivd from th variation of a gnral Lagrangian with unspcifid xplicit form. This tnsor is th sum of a trm containing th Blinfant-Rosnfld tnsor and a modifid prfctfluid nrgy-momntum tnsor in which th four-vlocity is rplacd by a unit four-vctor in th dirction of fluid momntum. Th quations of motion ar obtaind and it is shown that thy admit a Fridmann- Robrtson-Walkr spac-tim as a solution. kywords: Spinning fluids, Spinning particls PACS: q, Fy 1 Introduction According to th gnral thory of rlativity, fr particls mov along trajctoris which ar godsics of th background spac-tim. Kinmatically, th trajctory of ach particl can b charactrisd by th particl four-vlocity which is a tim-lik vctor tangnt to its path. This tangnt also shows th dirction of th particl momntum. On th othr hand th dynamics of a gnral rlativistic prfct fluid can b dscribd by its nrgy-momntum tnsor. This nrgy-momntum tnsor is xprssd in trms of th fluid nrgy dnsity and prssur and a projction tnsor which is itslf constructd out of th four-vlocity of th flow-lins and th spac-tim mtric. Whn th particl has an intrnal classical spin, it no longr movs along a godsic path in gnral du to a coupling btwn th particl spin and th spac-tim curvatur. Th dynamics of a spinning particl is dscribd by th Mathisson-Papaptrou-Dixon (MPD) quations [1], according to which th particl fourmomntum is tim-lik but not co-linar with its four-vlocity. Thus in trating th dynamics of a spinning particl, w dal with two distinct tim-lik four-vctors corrsponding to th vlocity and momntum fourvctors. Ths two prfrrd tim-lik vctors hav bn usd to construct th two most favourd supplmntary conditions (ndd to rndr th MPD quations complt), th so-calld Pirani condition and th Tulczyjw condition, s.g. [1]. In th formr th particl spin tnsor has no lctric componnts in th instantanous zro-vlocity fram whil in th lattr it has no lctric componnts in th instantanous zro-momntum fram. Svral xtnsions of prfct fluid to spinning fluids, i.. prfct fluids whos particls hav an intrnal but classical spin, hav bn mad in th litratur basically by adding trms containing spin to th prfct-fluid nrgy-momntum tnsor [2, 3, 4, 5]. Th intrrlations btwn th dynamics of spinning particls and th dynamics of spinning fluids hav bn studid in [6] in th framwork of Einstin-Cartan thory. In ths studis always a Pirani-typ supplmntary condition has bn usd. Th qustion thn ariss if a formulation of spinning fluids consistnt with Tulczyjw condition is possibl. Th aim of th prsnt work is to addrss this qustion. W show that such a formulation is possibl providd th projction tnsor which constituts th nrgy-momntum tnsor, is constructd out of a tim- lik four-vctor in th dirction of th momntum, rathr than th vlocity four-vctor. addrss:m-mohsni@pnu.ac.ir 1
To construct such a spinning fluid modl, w dploy th machinry dvlopd in rf. [5] in which a spinning fluid nrgy-momntum has bn drivd from a gnral Lagrangian whos xplicit form is not spcifid. W start with such a Lagrangian and nd up with an nrgy-momntum tnsor whos (xplicitly) spin-dpndnt trms ar similar to th corrsponding trms in th abov mntiond rfrnc but in th rmaining part th usual prfct-fluid projction tnsor is rplacd with a modifid on. In this modifid projction tnsor th four-vlocity is rplacd with a unit four-vctor in th dirction of th four-momntum. In th following sctions w first brifly rviw th MPD quations dscribing th motion of spinning particls in curvd spac-tims. Thn w follow a customisd vrsion of th procdur dvlopd in [5] to obtain th nrgy-momntum tnsor. Th quations of motion can thn b obtaind by imposing th rquirmnts of symmtry and consrvation on th nrgy-momntum tnsor. W us th rsulting quations of motion to study th dynamics of th spinning fluid in a flat Fridman-Robrtson-Walkr univrs gnratd by th fluid. W show that ths quations admit a solution of this typ. A discussion of th rsults concluds th main sctions. Som supplmntary calculations ar collctd in an appndix. 2 Th MPD Equations Th motion of a spinning particl moving in a curvd spac-tim is dscribd by th so-calld MPD quations. Nglcting th particl multi-pols highr than dipol, ths ar givn by [1] ṡ ν = p v ν p ν v, (1) ṗ = 1 2 R ναβv ν s αβ, (2) whr s ν ar th particl spin tnsor, p ar th particl momntum, R νκλ rprsnt th curvatur tnsor, ovr-dots man covariant diffrntiation v α α, and v ar th particl vlocity. Ths quations supplmntd by th so-calld Tulczyjw condition p s ν = 0 (3) rsult in p p = const. = m 2, s ν s ν = const. = 2s 2 whr m, s ar th particls mass and spin rspctivly. Hnc, dfining χ = 1 m p th normalization χ χ = 1 is guarantd by th quations of motion. Th 4-vctor χ, somtims calld th particl dynamical vlocity, is not in gnral co-linar with th particl kinmatical vlocity, v. Thr is no quation of motion for v and it should b dtrmind indirctly from th othr quations of motion. Ths quations rsult in th following rlation [7, 8] which simplifis furthr whn a spcific gaug, say v = ( v κ χ κ ) (χ + 2sν R νραβ s αβ ) 4m 2 +s λσ R λσγδ s γδχρ v κ χ κ = 1 (5) is chosn. This is th gaug in which th instantanous zro-momntum and th zro-vlocity frams ar simultanous [1]. Th MPD quations do not guarant that v v is constant. (4) 2
3 Th nrgy-momntum tnsor W construct a spinning fluid modl in which th fluid quations of motion rduc to th MPD quations for a singl spinning particl. W bgin with a mattr Lagrangian of th form L = L(u, a,ė a,x i, X i ) (6) whr u = dx dt ar th fluid four-vlocity, X i ar th idntity coordinats, and a ar th ttrad filds. Th latr satisfy a aν = g ν, a b = η ab, (7) a,b ranging from 0 to 3. Th filds X i,i = 1,2,3 labl th flow-lins in th sns that thy idntify th flowlin passing through any givn point of spac-tim. To gnrat ths, on can choos an arbitrary spac-lik hypr-surfac quippd with a coordinat systm X i and labl ach flow-lin by th coordinat valu of th point whr it intrscts that hypr-surfac [9]. W rquir u X i = 0 (8) which rstricts th flow-lins to b dirctd along th intgral curvs of X i = const. Th ntropy pr particl is assumd to b consrvd along ths curvs. Th conjugat momntum is dfind by P = u, (9) and th spin (dnsity) tnsor by [5] S ν = a l aν a ν l a (10) whr l a =. This may b thought of as th dnsity of th sum of individual particls spin s ν. For latr ė a convninc w also dfin π = P P P (11) rprsnting a unit four-vctor along th fluid momntum. Th action S = 1 grd gld 4 x+ 4 x (12) κ dscribs th mattr and th spac-tim dynamics. Rquiring this action to b stationary undr variation of ttrad fild, and making us of th Einstin quation w obtain G ν = κt ν (13) gt ν aν δ a = δ ( gl). By noting that th variation of L with rspct to th ttrad fild gts contribution from both xplicit dpndnc on th fild and implicit dpndnc on it via covariant drivativs, w hav δ ( gl) = ( g Lδ ν + b b ν + ė b ė b ν + 1 ) 2 αb α ν ν a δa whr B αν = u S να +u ν S α +u α S ν. 3
hr th first trm in th parnthss coms from variation of g, th scond two trms from variational drivativ with rspct to ttrad and th last trm from implicit ttrad dpndnc via connction cofficints, as is shown in th appndix. Trms lik u S αν ar particular cass of th Blinfant-Rosnfld tnsor [2]. On th othr hand, by using th transformation proprtis of L, it can b shown that [10] b b ν + ė b ė b ν = u νu ( X i ) νx i. Assum that th quantity X i dpnds on th particl dnsity numbr n. Thus L dpnds on n implicitly. So th last trm in th abov quation may b simplifid furthr. Considr an infinitsimal flux tub d 3 X whos sctions satisfy quation (8). Lt γ ij dnot th mtric of this subspac and γ its dtrminant. This mtric can b obtaind from th spac-tim mtric by γ ij = g ν X i ν X j. (14) Th numbr of particls in this tub is assumd consrvd and is givn by N = n γ. W hav ( X i ) = n γ n γ ( X i ) = n n γ ij X j and hnc ( X i ) νx i = n n γ ij X j ν X i. W also hav not that v is normal to th sctions of th subspac. Thus w obtain γ ij X j ν X i = g ν +u u ν (15) ( X i ) νx i = n nh ν (16) whr h ν = g ν +u u ν is a projction tnsor. Putting th abov rsults togthr, w gt δ ( gl) = ( g u νu +L(g ν +A ν ) n n h ν + 1 ) 2 αbν α aν δ a whr w hav addd a vanishing trm A ν aν δ a = 0 to nsur that w will nd up with a propr nrgy-momntum tnsor. Th xplicit form of A ν dpnds on th choic of ttrad. Thr ar two natural choics for th ttrad fild. Ths corrspond to taking th tim-lik componnt of th ttrad along th dirctions of fluid four-vlocity or four-momntum. (Ths choics hav bn usd in [11] for th cas of spinning particls in a diffrnt contxt). W choos a ttrad for which 0 coincids with th momntum dirction, i.., w st 0 = π. (17) In this cas A ν aν δ a = 0 is guarantd by orthonormality of th ttrad componnts. It turns out that this choic is consistnt with th supplmntary condition P S ν = 0. (18) Th othr choic is givn by 0 = u which will rsult in an nrgy-momntum tnsor as th on givn in [5] togthr with a diffrnt supplmntary condition. 4
Now lt us dfin f as th diffrnc btwn th two vlocitis u and π, This rsults in f u π. (19) f f +2f π = 0. If w now nglct f f, an assumption basd on th xpctation that th ffct of spin is not too strong, w gt f π = 0. W now us this to obtain u u ν a δ ν a = (π +f )(π ν +f ν ) a δ ν a W thrfor obtain T ν a δ ν a = = π π ν a δ ν a ( ( P u ν + L n ) H ν + 1 ) n 2 α(u ν S α +u S α ν +u α S ν ) a δ ν a whr in th right hand sid w hav intrchangd and ν, and hav dfind H ν = g ν +π π ν (or, quivalntly, H ν = i iν ). Hr P is givn by rlation (9). Also, th fluid prssur is dfind by Thus w rach at th following nrgy-momntum tnsor P = L n n. (20) T ν = H ν P +P u ν 1 2 α(s α u ν +S α νu +S ν u α ) (21) This is a gnralization of th nrgy-momntum tnsor givn in [10] for spinning dusts by taking th fluid prssur into account, and modifis th on givn in [4] which rly on th Frnkl condition. It is also diffrnt from th nrgy-momntum tnsor givn in [5] by th form of th projction tnsor. Th scond trm in Eq. (21) is th sam as thos of [4] and [5]. Th third trm is th divrgnc of som Blinfant- Rosnfld tnsors. In th first trm th usual prfct fluid trm g ν +u u ν has bn rplacd by g ν +π π ν. 4 Equations of motion By rquiring this nrgy-momntum tnsor to b symmtric w obtain th quation of motion of th spin P u ν P ν u = α (u α S ν ) (22) Dmanding now th nrgy-momntum tnsor to satisfy th consrvation quation ν T ν = 0, yilds H ν ν P +P ν (π π ν )+ ν (P u ν ) = 1 2 R ναβu ν S αβ (23) This quation can also b drivd by variation of world-lins. By projcting Eq. (23) paralll and normal to π, w can rduc it to th following quations P π + (Eu ) = 1 2 R ναβπ u ν S αβ, (24) 5
H ν ν P +Pπ ν ν π +Eu ν ν π = 1 2 H κr κ ναβu ν S αβ (25) rspctivly. Hr E dnots th norm of P. Th first of ths is a consrvation quation and th scond on is an quation of motion for th fluid momntum. For a spinning dust, P = 0 and ρ = nm, m bing th particls mass. Dfining p = 1 n P,s ν = 1 n Sν and using (nu ) = 0, quations (22) and (23) rduc to Eqs. (1) and (2) rspctivly, th MPD quations. 5 Applications In this sction w apply th abov formalism to a flat cosmological modl. Considr a flat Fridman-Robrtson- Walkr spac-tim with th following lin lmnt ds 2 = dt 2 +a 2 (t)δ ij dx i dx j. (26) whri,j runovrthspacialdimnsions, a(t)isthscalfactor. Forco-movingmattrwhavu = (1,0,0,0). Now as w do not xpct th four-momntum to b co-linar with th four-vlocity in gnral, w start with P = (ρ(t),ǫp i ) whr w will nglct ǫ 2 and highr ordr trms. Not that this satisfis u P = ρ, ρ bing th nrgy dnsity. Th latr is th fluid analogu of (5). Thus w hav E = ρ and π = (1,ǫ pi ρ By insrting this into th nrgy- momntum tnsor (21) w obtain ). T 00 = ρ, (27) T ii = P a 2 (28) T 0i = 1 (ǫ(2w+1)p i t S 0i 2ȧa ) 2 S0i (29) whr w is th so-calld quation of stat paramtr givn by w = P ρ. Now th Einstin s quation givs and On th othr hand, th spin quation of motion (22) yilds (ȧ(t) ) 2 ρ(t) = 3κ 1, (30) a(t) (ȧ2 ) P(t) = κ 1 (t) a 2 (t) +2ä(t), (31) a(t) ǫ(2w+1)p i 0i (t) = t S +2ȧ(t) a(t) S0i. (32) Th first of ths immdiatly rsults in ds ij dt ds 0i dt +5ȧ a Sij = 0, (33) +4ȧ a S0i = ǫp i. (34) S ij (t) = σ ij (a(t)) 5 (35) 6
in which σ ij ar intgration constants. Th scond quation whn combind with quation (32) yilds S 0i = ǫσ 0i (a(t)) n (36) p i = 1 w+1 σ0i ȧ(t)(a(t)) (n+1) (37) whr n = 4w+3 w+1. From th translational quation of motion (25) w obtain ǫ(1+w) dpi dt +ǫ(4+5w)ȧ a pi = ä a S0i (38) for which w hav alrady a solution, rlations (36) and (37). Insrting this solution back into th diffrntial quation shows that it is valid for any w 1. On can asily chck that th abov solutions of th quations of motion satisfy th consrvation quation (24) howvr thy ar consistnt with th supplmntary condition (18) only for σ 0i = 0 (39) i.. w nd up with a four-momntum paralll to th four-vlocity in this cas. This is du th maximal symmtris of th spac-tim dscribd by (26). From quation (35) w hav S 2 = 1 2 S νs ν = 1 2 σ ijσ ij (a(t)) 6. Thus th fluid spin (th spin dnsity intgratd ovr a spacial volum) is spac-lik and gos lik (a(t)) 3. For both th abov modl and th usual prfct-fluid modl th application of th Einstin s quation givs th sam xprssion for th nrgy dnsity and prssur in trms of th scal factor. Thus, in th prsnt contxt th volution of a(t) is th sam as th standard modl with a usual prfct fluid. This is in agrmnt with th rsult obtaind in [4]. Howvr it would b possibl to obtain a diffrnt volution for th scal factor by applying an avraging on spins schm, as it has bn don in [12] for th cas of Einstin-Cartan thory. 6 Discussion W hav constructd a consistnt formulation of spinning fluids compatibl with th Tulczyjw-typ supplmntary condition by starting with a rathr gnral Lagrangian dpnding on a ttrad fild that its gyration simulats th spin. Thr ar two natural choics for th tim-lik componnt of this ttrad. Ths corrspond to th vlocity and th momntum dirctions and rsult in diffrnt supplmntary quations. Our choic advocat th supplmntary quation P S ν = 0. Th rsulting nrgy-momntum tnsor rducs to th usual prfct fluid nrgy-momntum tnsor in th cas whr th spin is turnd off and to th nrgy-momntum tnsor introducd in Rf.[10] for spinning dusts, and th rlvant quations of motion rduc to th MPD quations. Th gnral form of this nrgy-momntum tnsor and consqunt quations of motion diffr from thos of Rf. [5] mainly du to diffrnt forms of th projction tnsors. W hav shown that th quations of motion admit a flat FRW spac-tim as a solution. For this solution th four-vlocity and four-momntum ar co-linar du to maximal symmtris of th solution. Th dynamics of spac-tim in this modl is similar to th on obtaind by a usual prfct fluid modl but applying an avraging procss could rsult in diffrnt volutions. It would b intrsting to find solutions for which th th fluid vlocity and momntum ar not co-linar. Rsarch is undrway along this dirction. Acknowldgmnts I would lik to thank an anonymous rfr of Gnral Rlativity and Gravitation for valuabl commnts. A Ttrad variation of th Lagrangian In this appndix w calculat th variation of L with rspct to ttrad. W hav δ L = δl δ a δ a ė a u α aν δγ να. 7
But δl δ a δ a = = = = ( a α ( u α ė a )) δ a ( ( b δa b δb a α u α )) ė b δ a ( ( b b ν aν b ν aν α u α ė b ( b b ν + ė b ė b ν α (u α b ν )) δ a ė b )) ν aδ a and u α aν ė a δγ να = 1 2 uα aν = 1 2 α = 1 2 α ė a +u α a = 1 2 α δ( g αν + α g ν + ν g α ) ( u aν ė a α ) +u α aν ė a u ν aα ė a δg ν ( u aν ė a +u ν a α ė a +u α aν α ė a ė a ν u ν aα ė a u aα ė a ν ) aν δ a ( u α a ė a +u S να +u α aν ν ė a +u ν S ) α aν δ a whr w hav omittd a surfac trm. Thus ( δ L = b bν + ė b ė bν + 1 ) 2 α(u S να +u ν S α +u α S ν ) aν δ a. Rfrncs [1] W.G. Dixon, Proc. R. Soc. London, sr. A 314 (1970) 499. [2] J.R. Ray, L.L. Smally, Phys. Rv. D 26 (1982) [3] J.R.
