ISIS Chapter 1 The Last Day She walks over to the balcony, throws open the curtain, struts out to the balcony, butt naked, with the most voluptuous body in all of Egypt and announces: Good Morning Egypt!! Returning her call, every single male in Thebes replies: Good Morning Pharaoh!! She bows and turns around quickly. As she comes back through the curtains, a false beard is strapped on her chin. SEQUENCE 1: QUEEN HATSHESUP S MORTURARY TEMPLE AT DEIR al-bahri (Monastery of the North). UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Her funerary temple. Celebrates the immortality of Hat. She must preserve the cosmic order for the common good. This is the story of the Queen/Pharaoh Hatshepsut s (hereafter called Hat ) and her journey into the afterlife to save, as she is taught, the very existence of Egypt. She ruled Egypt during the Middle Kingdom, from B.C., a hundred years before one of her worshippers invented the toilet seat. Hatshepsut married her half-brother Thutmose II in 1482 B.C. and ruled along side of him. When Hat s husband died, his son and Hat s stepmother, Thutmose III assumed power, but he was still a child.!2

Hat began acting as regent to her stepson, and then usurped him b the second woman pharaoh to rule Egypt. She ruled for 20 years before her stepson sought revenge. Strapped to Hat s side, a silver handled battle axe. She is almost six feet tall, slender, curvaceous, and wears a ridiculous strap on beard to indicate she s a man. Considering her body, toned by rowing, shooting, riding, and hunting, has not a speck of hair on it, the out crop from her chin is most disconcerting. Hatshepsut is tall, elegant with a razor sharp nose and tiny nostrils. Dark olive skin that masks her mastery of gamesmanship. Years of mandatory inbreeding has left her with stunning lavender eyes. As Pharaoh, she must walk like a man, an art she has yet to perfect. She glides up the last of three giant ramparts leading to her grandiose mortuary temple at Deir-el-Bahri, about from the capital city, Thebes. This is her legacy to planet earth and elegant enough to admire from the stars she d mutter when alone. Called, The Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the 22 year construction site is built into the limestone cliffs on the eastern face of the Theban Mountain as if constructed by the head god Amun himself. The huge amphitheater like setting has vast views of the plain leading to the Nile. Dozens of of construction workers dot the landscape, but the work is largely finished. The north and south lines of the complex is surrounded by myrrh trees, giving off a delicious odor. Lining the three tiered causeway on each side, are approximately eighty grand sphinxes. She is followed by a large entourage of construction big-wigs and her chief architect/lover, Senemut. Senemut is tall, pointed, witty, and brilliant. This entire grandeur is largely his vision. Walking out front, practically high-stepping, is her advisor/talking cat, Bastet. Bastet being the name of Egyptian cat goddess of peace. A!3

tribute gift from some Minoan king. Bastet is anything but peaceful. A cigarette dangles from his mouth. The entourage pass by some recently painted reliefs: a drawing of Hat being greeted by the god Osiris, eating with the sun god Amun Re wrestling a hippo, playing chess with a baboon, swiveling a hula-hoop with a giraffe, riding a unicycle, and sitting on the royal toilet reading a papyrus. Oh this is pushing the scarab. Bastet explains stopping in front of a Hat on a Toilet relief. Hatshepsut stops, examines the relief. Oh sorry about that. Plaster and Paint Union 58 is on strike - the usual demands - more beer and softer bread. Senemut adds. This requires an un-usual response: Have the entire union penisslapped fifty times each by our new Nubian prisoners, Bastet declares. Hat nods, pets Bastet, and turns to stare at the Nile, opposite the reliefs. She wears a bracelet and a pendant with lapis lazuli - a scarab set in gold. Similarly, her shoes are made of sheet gold. Hat wears a white crown, symbolizing her control of Upper Egypt, and most oddly, royal ceremonial beard! Hat was an impel transvestite - all foreign dignitaries believe she is a man. She wears the crown of Upper Egypt with the cobra goddess. Her people consider the pharaoh the conduit between those she rules and the gods. What s good for the pharaoh is good for the Egyptians. No rock to big, no pillar to large - no obelisk to grand to be lifted - all in the name of the pharaoh. Hat gazes up, way up, her entourage follows her gaze. A worker carving on the rock face, standing on a narrow piece of wood held up by ropes, hundreds of meters above her. Obelisk? Why is that man frantically waving? inquiries Hat. A whistling sound when.!4

A medium size round rock falls on a man, waving a fan at Hat, in the entourage smattering blood and killing him instantly. That man, is your stepson, you know, Tuthomose III. yawns Bastet. He s seen this before. What is he up to, now? Another rock strikes an Egyptian pulling up a pulling a cart full of amphora vases full of sunflower oil. He appears to be trying to kill you by hurling rocks from above. Says Bastet. My little warrior - he really knows how to kill people. The cart rolls now rolls down out of control and over a twenty foot drop. It lands on a woman baking bread, kill and spraying burning embers. Options: 1. boomerang display God of Wisdom She has to take an astronomy test. Like a bad dream, she sleeps past it. She uses a spell What god is she honoring here? Underneath her gold sandals, a mosaic tile depicting a pharaoh lead hunting party. She s wearing her false beard - to the outside world - she is a man. Panoramic dorian columns tower along the hallway, an obvious designed to intimate the foreign dignitaries. Hat is receiving tribute from one of Egypt s conquered enemies and on today s schedule, ambassadors from Assyria. At Hat s feet, Bastet is asleep in a bed of finely threaded linen.!5

The following is a list of fifteen most popular ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. Osiris. Jacket (?). was a wise king who was married to his sister Isis. When he was murdered by their evil brother Seth, she used magic to bring him back to life to conceive a son, Horus who revenged his father s death and killed his uncle. His son became the king of Egypt, while Osiris became the king of the dead and the judge of the underworld. Egyptians thus saw him as triumphant over death; every pharaoh would be Osiris after death whilst he was the embodiment of Horus when alive. Osiris was also the god of vegetation and was often painted with green skin, symbolizing new growth and renewal. Isis (Cow Head) was the ultimate goddess for she was the mother of Horus and both wife and sister of Osiris. When her beloved husband was murdered by their brother Seth, she collected the dismembered parts of Osiris body and put them together with bandages, laying the foundation for the ancient Egyptian practice of mummifying their deceased. By bringing Osiris back to life, Isis also introduced the concept of resurrection that profoundly influenced other religions as well, including Christianity. Isis,!20

portrayed as a woman holding an Ankh in her hand and sometimes with a female body and cow s head or cow s horns was also worshiped as goddess of fertility. TEST: Mummify a live hippo! Horus - Falcon Head. One of the most important ancient Egyptian gods was the son of Osiris and Isis. According to the famous myth, he revenged his father s murder and killed his uncle Seth by which he established himself as the new king of Egypt. The early Egyptian pharaohs therefore legitimized their rule by presenting themselves as incarnated Horus. Also worshiped as the god of light and sky, Horus was usually depicted as a falcon-headed male creature wearing a white and red crown. Thoth (Bird Head). Reform a magic trick. The god of wisdom, writing and magic was most often portrayed as an ibis-headed man. Thoth was the scribe of the underworld who recorded the verdict on the deceased in the Hall of Maat, maintained the library of the gods, authored the spells in The Book of the Dead and wrote The Book of Thoth (containing the secrets of the universe). But he also played an important role in many ancient Egyptian myths, acting as an arbiter between the forces of good and evil. Ra or Re. TEST: ASTRONOMY was the sun god and one of the most important ancient Egyptian deities. He was also associated with pyramid building and the resurrection of the pharaohs. Symbolically born every morning with sunrise, Ra symbolically died with every sunset after which he began his journey into the underworld. In the later period, Ra became closely associated with Horus and just like the latter, he was usually portrayed as a falcon-headed man. However, rather than with white and red crown, Ra was depicted wearing a solar disc on his head..!21

MUT GODDESS OF WAR. Wife of Amun and mother of Khons, Mut was one of the chief Theban gods. Venerated as the great divine mother, Mut was usually depicted as a woman wearing a white and red crown but she was sometimes also portrayed with the head or body of a vulture and as a cow because in the later period, she merged with Hathor, another great divine mother who was usually depicted as a woman with cow horns and as a cow. OPET FESTIVAL: Flooding festival. Bastet was a feline goddess who was depicted either as a cat or woman with the head of a cat. She was the daughter of the sun god Ra and was closely associated with domesticated cat. Bastet was worshiped for her maternal, protective nature and was often painted surrounded by kittens. But she was also believed to be ferocious when necessary for cats were able to kill snakes - one the most deadly creatures in ancient Egypt. Amun or Amon which translates into The Hidden One was the head of the Theban pantheon of gods and goddesses. Worshiped as the king of gods (similarly as Zeus by ancient Greeks), Amun was usually painted in a human form but he was sometimes also portrayed with the ram s head. Like many other ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses that were eventually assimilated with their local/regional versions, Amun was later merged with Ra into Amun-Ra which remained the chief god throughout the period of ancient Egypt. Hathor was the cow goddess who was associated with dancing and music but she was also known as the Lady of Heaven, Earth and the Underworld. She was very popular among ancient Egyptians and was seen as wise, gentle and affectionate to both the living and dead. She protected women during pregnancy and childbirth, and was also worshiped as goddess as!22

fertility. Hathor was most often portrayed as a woman with cow horns featuring uraneus (Wadjet and sun disc). Sekhmet. Plays game of CHESS. was the goddess of war who was depicted as the lion-headed goddess. She was the Powerful One and destroyed the enemies of Ra but she also helped kings against their opponents. Sekhmet was also associated with medicine and both disease and health. Her portrayal as a lioness or lion-headed woman often included the uraneus, a symbol of royalty and divine authority of the Egyptian pharaohs. Anubis was a jackal-headed god, the divine embalmer who was closely associated with mummification and the afterlife; he was the custodian of the dead on their journey into the afterlife. Anubis black skin (a color associated with the dark Nile deposits that made farming in ancient Egypt so successful) was a symbol of rebirth. He also attended the Weighting of the Heart ceremony in the afterlife. Maat was the personification and goddess of truth, morality, justice, order, and harmony. She symbolized the natural equilibrium of the universe; she was the opposite of chaos and therefore the highest attainment of Egypt. The Egyptian Book of the Dead was an ancient survival guidebook which contained magical spells and instructions to ensure safe passage through the dangers of the Underworld. Protective spells were cast and amulets containing magic spells played an important role in the Ancient Egyptian burial rituals. A papyrus score ll containing spells from the Book of the Dead was often buried with wealthy Ancient Egyptians to help them leave their tombs and make their perilous journey through the underworld.!26

Egyptian Magic Spells and the Underworld The Book of the Dead contained nearly 200 Egyptian Magic Spells designed to help with the tests and trials that would be met in the Underworld. The dangers of the underworld included a variety of obstacles including fearful beasts, various traps, demons and a long series of tests. The correct magic spells would need to be recited to pass each test to guarantee safe passage through the terrifying trials which led to the Hall of Two Truths where their actions in their mortal lives would be examined - the Egyptian Magic Spells were essential for the Day of Judgement. The Magic Spells from the Book of the Dead The magic spells from the Book of the Dead were contained in different chapters. Some of the magic spells from the Book of the Dead included the following: Magic Spells relating to the burial ritual Magic Spells relating to the safety of the heart and soul of the deceased - including a spell to open the tomb for the soul and to let a man return to see his house on earth Magic Spells relating to safety in the Underworld - for not dying again, for not rotting, for preventing a man's head be cut off, spells of transformation into the forms of a snake, phoenix, hawk, swallow etc. A magic spell for entering the Hall of Truth and Spell 125, the 'Declaration of Innocence' which consists of denials such as "I have not killed, I have not robbed and I have not lied" made to Osiris and the 42 judges of the court Magic Spell Magical Amulets The magic spell 156 from the Book of the Dead relates to the power of the Goddess Isis and was recited over a knot amulet made of red jasper which was placed over the heart on the body of the deceased for protection!27

against wickedness, sometimes referred to as the Isis Amulet. The words of spell 156 from the Book of the Dead calls upon Isis: "The blood of Isis, the spells of Isis, the magical words of Isis shall keep this great (or shining) one strong, and shall protect him from whosoever would harm him\do to him such things as he abominateth." Egyptian Magic Spell 125 from the Book of the Dead The Magic Spell 125 is the best known spell of the Book of the Dead and was included in every papyrus buried with deceased Egyptians. Spell 125 deals with the dead soul's judgement by Osiris and the 42 judge deities who were faced in the Hall of the Truth in the Underworld. The soul of the had to recite the "declaration of innocence" which was addressed to Osiris and consisted of the denial of sinful actions in order to assure Osiris that he has lived a good life. The deceased then addressed the 42 judges by name and deny a further 42 transgressions. Only by giving the correct responses would the deceased be tested with the feather of truth and if successful guided to the Afterlife by Osiris. The denials of sinful actions such as " I have not lied, I have not robbed, I have not killed" etc. contained in the magic spell 125 has led to speculation that these were the basis of the Ten Commandments contained in the Bible. Moses was raised in Egypt and would have been familiar with the Egyptian magic spells. Egyptian Magic Spells from the Book of the Dead The following Egyptian Magic Spells are taken from the Book of the Dead: Magic Spell 06 - for not working in the underworld Magic Spells 22 & 23 - spells to give a mouth to the deceased Magic Spell 24 - to bring words of power Magic Spell 26 - to give a heart to the deceased!28

Magic Spell 27 - to prevent the heart of a man be taken from him in the underworld Magic Spell 43 - for not letting a man's head be cut off from him in the underworld Magic Spell 44 - for not dying again in the underworld Magic Spell 45 - for not rotting in the underworld Magic Spell 50 - for not entering to the god's execution block Magic Spell 78 - to assume the form of a divine hawk Magic Spell 83 - to assume the form of a phoenix Magic Spell 87 - to assume the form of a horned snake Magic Spell to let a man turn himself back to see his house on earth Hat uses spells to control nature and the gods to escape the perils of the underworld! There are many definitions of Magic. One of the definitions of Magic in The American Heritage Dictionary is: "The practice of using charms, spells, or rituals to attempt to produce supernatural events or to control events in nature." Another definition from another source is: "Magic is the attempt to produce a response in the god and to manipulate him or her for human purposes. Ancients believed that the gods could be manipulated." I have defined magic as the following: "Employing a technique or ritual, to manipulate or control a natural or spiritual phenomena or event, by supernatural means."!29

Using this definition, let us look at what we call the "Indian Rain Dance". How does it fit into the term magic? 1) It is a technique or ritual - There is an actual dance carried out with specific movements, etc. 2) It's purpose is to manipulate or control the weather, i.e. cause it to rain. 3) It is supposed to work by supernatural means. Notice that cloud seeding by airplanes does not fit the term magic since the manipulation of nature is not by supernatural means but by science. Using my definition, something is considered magic only if it meets all 3 criteria. Egyptian Magic - bold goes in book. My definition goes well with the Egyptians use of the term Magic. The Egyptians used magic for both practical and religious purposes. They believed magic was a divine creation for the benefit of humanity. It was considered a field of knowledge just like architecture, literature, medicine, etc. It was just another category of knowledge to be used in coping with their environment and religion. In our modern society, the word magic does not convey the force it did in the ancient Egyptian culture. To the Egyptians, magic was a real and potent force. It was a tangible means of communicating, manipulating, and controlling their gods. For example, their life depended on agriculture and thus the weather. Using magic to control the weather was important for their survival. Also, as we will be exploring, magic was essential after death for safe passage through the afterlife. OPENING - SCENE WHERE SHE DESTROYS A CLAY FIGURE: Examples of some important ancient Egyptian magic rituals concern defense against enemies. Wax or clay figures of the enemy were ritual!30

destroyed. Also magic was used to keep away spiritual enemies (i.e. god's that were not favorable towards them or wanted to harm them). Also personal spells were used against someone's enemy. For example, there are spells that invoke evil gods to appear in a person's dreams. Also personal use of magic included the use of love potions. It usually consisted of some liquid or food that came with an incantation. To the ancient Egyptians, it would not differ much from a medical prescription. Remember, magic was just another field of knowledge like medicine and was very real to them. The purpose of the magic was to compel the help of divine powers. Usually, the person carrying out the magic was identified by name with a deity to obtain from him the power of that god. Also the person might threaten that god with dire consequences if his demands were not met. Many of the Egyptian gods were invoked using magic, but the most frequent god invoked was Isis, since she was the protector of her son (Horus), with whom the person seeking help would be identified with. Amulets Amulets were also used for magical protection. They were used both by the living and the dead. Many amulets have been found in Egyptian tombs. These amulets are in the shape of gods, goddesses, animals, objects, parts of the body, etc. and were believed to contain special powers. Many amulets were wrapped up with the mummy. Thus, wearing of amulets during life was the means of seeking the gods protection and help. After death a special protection was also needed and we will be discussing this. Use of Magic in Medicine Medicine was practiced both on scientific and magical levels. Prescriptions also relied both on pharmacology and sympathetic magic. There were many spells to help cure snake bites. Also spells were used for childbirth, pregnancy, and conception. Many incantations have been found for birth,!31

protection of babies, providing of milk, and defensive against childhood diseases. Later, during the New Kingdom, these spells were copied onto papyrus scrolls and were available to anyone who could pay for them. We know these as the "Egyptian Book of the Dead". The Egyptians called it by its true name which is the "Book of Going Forth by Day". These books were not standardized and many variations occur. Thus, magic was important not only to the ancient Egyptian in this life, but also in the afterlife.
