ST BRIGID S PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016 MATHS WEEK 2016: The children all took part in Buddy Activities during Maths Week this year, with the theme being time. They had to race against the clock colouring in, solving puzzles and working together. 4th and 5th class attended an event in Engineers Ireland and were even on News2Day on RTE 2 talking about Maths.well done! Senior Infants have started the Aistear programme. This month s theme was all about transport and the children are really enjoying it. Next month's theme will be 'People in Our Community'. 1
Let s see how our new Junior Infants are settling in! In Maths, all three classes have been doing lots of fun activities in sorting and looking at items that are big and small. Getting great use out Of the dressing up box Junior Infants went on a nature walk to study all the signs of autumn. They collected some conkers, leaves and acorns for their nature table. The Bishops Garden was a great place for finding fallen leaves! 2
Here the children are hard at work cutting and pasting some hedgehogs. Art is one of the children s favourite subjects and they have been busy making hedgehogs, autumn trees and spooky Hallowe en masks. Some scary masks! JUNIOR INFANTS WANT to wish you A HAPPY HALLOWEEN 3
SCHOOL GARDEN Ms Hogan s 1st class harvested potatoes, carrots, onions and parsnips in the school garden. They brought some home for dinner, which they said were delicious. WORD WIZARDS Since September, the children have been working so hard to build their vocabulary weekly. There was tough competition as 4th, 5th and 6th took part in a Word Wizard poster contest, congrats to Jan Pauline (5th) who created this beautiful piece of art. With fabulous new vocabulary the children have created some stunning poetry recently. 4
Some examples Of wonderful poetry HALLOWE EN Bursting bonfires Witches flying Terrifying zombies Bloody ghosts Howling werewolves Shrieking spirits Haunted Houses all around Mysterious mummies in the night Do you see the moon up in the sky? Somethings coming, I ll tell you why You better be watching out It s Hallowe en night! Grace, 3rd Class WITCH EVIL, SCARY DARING, SPLASHING, LAUGHING BEWARE WITHCES ARE COMING WARTS Gabriella, 3rd Class HALLOWE EN A wicked witch was making stew Out of frogs and eyes too Two zombies in the night Scaring people with a fright Bloody vampires drinking bottles of blood. Monika, 3rd Class Howling wind out in the night Angry witches flying their brooms Lighting lanterns out on the street Lots of children handful of treats Out on the streets you can t believe When you look out the window there s Everyone getting treats Each of the treats are hard to eat!? Never eat so many on a creepy Hallowe en night! Aisling, 4th Class 5
Hallowe en You know it is Hallowe en when Pumpkins are lit, Spooky spirits fly, Haunted house is the best A skeleton has all the bones Lanterns are to light at night Lights in Hallowe en can blink Oh no I see a vampire behind you! What is trick or treat? I said Eating sweets with friends Everybody goes trick or treating Nuts are also given Thelma, 4th Class Some people say it is the day spirits come, But us children find it as an excuse to dress up and have fun! Sticky fingers, Exhausted legs, One more house to say, Trick or treat And that s what Hallowe en is all about Emily, 5th Class Banshee Possessing, ghoulish, mysterious, Brushing her hair, squealing, hypnotising, haunting, As she lurks in the shadows for her next victim. Horrifying. Saoirse, 6th Class 6
VAMPIRES IN COFFINS Walking through a graveyard on Hallowe en night, Expecting, expecting, to get a fright, A wailing banshee, making me jump, In my throat is a forming lump, Everything dark except for my light Creaking makes me look around, Even though I was expecting that sound, A coffin opens and a vampire comes for me, Help! This is even worse than Li! A werewolf howls from a nearby mound, I shake and I shiver, They ll have my liver, But they want to be friends, And my smiles amends, These are friends I prefer! Robin, 3rd Class The dark tip of the unknown, Ghosts and Goblins here to scream Everything is doing their thing Babies scream, children squealing All is creepy tonight Ghosts saying boohoo, Dracula creeping out tonight, Devils dancing in their burning home of hell, Witches spells bubbles and booms Phantoms singing their scary song As all is dark kids are dressing up So be careful in the night, Or else you ll get a fright! Olivia, 5th Class 7
THE BUTCHERING BEAST Halloween Eerie sounds haunt the streets, Silhouettes lurk in the shadows, The moon glistens and lights the roads Like bright lanterns floating in the sky. The tinted fog blinds the eye, Blood-curdling screams can be heard, The floorboard s creak echoes through the hallway, The lights flicker drearily. Werewolves howl looking for prey, The woods are filled with terror, The woods become a perilous place. This is Halloween. Sarah, 6th As I walk through the sinister cemetery I get frightened, I want to sprint away. I hear a hair-raising noise, I get goose bumps I run but there is no exit. No-way. Suddenly a butchering beast appears I sprint with all my might. But I get out of breath. I stop. I am full of fear I had always remembered that moment The beast with the slavering jaw. Never again I ll walk in his dreary domain I ll never forget what I was saw. I still remember the lit and carved pumpkins The upside down, pitch black bats. The hostile vicious werewolves And the emerald eyes on the jet black cats. Dearbhla, 6th 8
