2 Aquarius Status Completed 3-year Prime Mission Nov Operations funding is extended through Sep Mission Extension Proposal, to fund operations through Sep 2017, is in NASA review. Final data release (V4.0) for Prime Mission is planned for mid-late June 2015.

5 Purpose of this Presentation Aquarius is beginning Extended Mission Operations October (Formal approval due this summer) Major science is to begin a baseline to measure long term climatic trends in ocean salinity and marine water cycle. Requires decadal measurement records; longterm calibration stability. Stretches the present data to its limits.

6 Objective: Detect SSS Trends Analyse for trends in current [SMOS & Aquarius] data records. Examine a method to blend the SMOS and Aquarius data to extend the record length. Very preliminary results are presented here. Question: What trends are detectable in the current data sets? A null result is meaningful.

7 Data Sets Used 1. Aquarius V3.4 test run for V4.0; Standard monthly L3 fields 2. Aquarius OISSS from U. Hawaii; large-scale biased adjusted with Argo fields (Melnichenko et al 2015, submitted JTech) SMOS CATDS CEC-LOCEAN v2013 L3 product All fields are interpolated to 1 x1 monthly grid Time Intervals: Sep 2011 Jan 2015; Aquarius/SMOs overlap Jan 2010 Jan 2015; SMOS

9 Anomaly EOFs Aquarius V3.4 test run for V4.0 Seasonal cycle removed EOF 1: Trend EOFs 2, 3, 4: inter-annual modes The trend becomes the dominant mode, after removing the seasonal climatology.

10 Anomaly EOFs Aquarius OISSS; Bias Adjusted with Argo Similar result with the Aquarius OISSS data. The trend remains the dominant anomaly EOF mode. The OISSS bias adjustment does not alter this dominant pattern.

11 Anomaly EOF 1 Aquarius OISSS The dominant trend pattern is freshening along a band in the SW Tropical Pacific. It reveals the ENSOrelated SSS evolution between late 2011 and the present.

12 Evolution of Pacific NINO SST Indices; CPC/NOAA, April All NINO indices, except Nino1+2, were positive; Nino4 strengthened and Nino3 weakened in Mar Nino3.4 persisted and = 0.6 o C in Mar Compared with last Mar, the central and eastern equatorial Pacific was warmer in Mar The indices were calculated based on OISST. They may have some differences compared with those based on ERSST.v3b. Fig. P1a. Nino region indices, calculated as the area-averaged monthly mean sea surface temperature anomalies ( o C) for the specified region. Data are derived from the NCEP OI SST analysis, and anomalies are departures from the base period means. 12

15 SMOS Data Inclusion Very similar to the Aquarius results during the overlap time period. Annual cycle dominates. The trend is in EOF3

16 SMOS Data Inclusion The trend is still evident in EOF3, but there is anomalous spike in Annual cycle still dominates EOFs 1 & 2.

17 SMOS Anomaly EOFs SMOS 5-year Record The anomaly trend is still dominant in EOF1 in later years, while there was more anomalous activity in 2010, indicating the tend was part of a [ENSO] cycle.

18 Summary A secular SSS trend is resolved in the EOF analyses during mid 2011-present The pattern appears to be ENSO variability in the western tropical Pacific Extended observations will be needed to filter seasonal and inter-annual climate variability and resolve long-term climate changes in the ocean.

19 Summary Next steps: Regression analysis will be tested to filter ENSO variability in the western tropical Pacific Using EOFs to merge SMOS and Aquarius data (original abstract) requires more work and was not included in this presentation Focus on more results at the Salinity and Water Cycle meeting in Hamburg, October 2015.
