3 Introduction The following document demonstrates how the Interactive Science 2016, Grades 6-8 program can be integrated with the Full Option Science System TM (FOSS) for. This correlation is provided as a service to teachers in locating Pearson Interactive Science lessons that complement the FOSS program and enhance students science success. Interactive Science is a middle school science program composed of twelve student modules spanning life, earth, physical, and nature topics that makes learning personal, engaging, and relevant for today s student. Interactive Science features an innovative Write-in Student Edition that enables students to become active participants in their learning and truly connect the Big Ideas of science to their world. 4 PHYSICAL SCIENCE Electronics, First Edition Investigation 1: Circuits Students discover how to create complete circuits and how to identify series, parallel, and short circuits. Investigation 2: Resistors 1 Students discover how resistors influence the performance of lamps in electrical circuits, and develop a model that explains what resistance is and how it might affect the flow of current in a circuit. Investigation 3: Voltage Students explore, measure and manipulate one of the two main attributes of electricity, voltage, and discover how voltage can be influenced by components in a circuit. Investigation 4: Electronic Dissection Students explore electronic consumer products to discover the kinds and numbers of electronic components used in their design, and consider the impact of technology on American life. Investigation 5: Resistors 2 Students discover the rules for predicting the total resistance imposed by multiple resistors placed in series and/or parallel. Investigation 6: Diodes Students discover the characteristics of diodes and compare their behavior in circuits to the behavior of other components with which they are familiar. Investigation 7: Capacitors Students discover the characteristics of capacitors, compare them to components with which they are familiar, and use them in circuits to perform new functions. 5 Investigation 8: Current This investigation leads students to understand the concept of electric current, and to use their understanding to solve circuit problems. Investigation 9: Transistors Students discover the characteristics of transistors, compare them to components with which they are familiar, and use them in circuits to perform new functions. Chapter 6, Lesson 2: Electric Current The Interactive Science program does not address transistors in its coverage of electric circuits. Chemical Interactions, First Edition Investigation 1: Substances Students are introduced to substances as unique forms of matter. Investigation 2: Elements Students learn that elements are the fundamental substances from which all matter is made, and that the periodic table displays all of the known elements. Investigation 3: Particles Students are introduced to the particle theory of matter and use it to explain how gas can be compressed. Investigation 4: Kinetic Energy Students observe expansion and contraction of solids, liquids, and gas, and explain those observations in terms of the kinetic energy of particles. Investigation 5: Energy Transfer Students explain heating up and cooling down in terms of changes of kinetic energy resulting from collisions between particles. Investigation 6: Heat of Fusion Students determine the amount of heat needed to change solid water (ice) into liquid water. 6 Investigation 7: Phase Change Students learn that phase of matter (solid, liquid, gas) is the consequence of how particles relate to one another, and that phase can be changed by changing the kinetic energy of particles. Investigation 8: Solutions Students observe dissolving and explain the change in the appearance of substances in terms of disintegration at the particle level. Investigation 9: Reactions Students observe that starting substances (reactants) change into new substances (products) during reactions, and explain the change in terms of the rearrangement of atoms. Investigation 10: More Reactions Students observe additional reactions and learn about limiting factors in reactions. Force and Motion, First Edition Investigation 1: Here to There This investigation introduces students to motion as a change of position, and distance as the magnitude of a change of position. Investigation 2: Speed Students learn that speed is the rate at which an object changes position. Investigation 3: Comparing Speeds Students learn how to analyze and represent speed to solve problems. Investigation 4: Representing Motion Students learn to represent motion events as graphs. 7 Investigation 5: Acceleration This investigation introduces students to acceleration as changing velocity, and they learn ways to determine acceleration when time and distance data are known. Investigation 6: Force Students are introduced to forces, the ways they interact, and their effects, including friction and motion. Investigation 7: Gravity Students learn that gravity is a universal force pulling objects to Earth with predictable acceleration. Investigation 8: Momentum Students learn to analyze collision interactions in terms of inertia, momentum, and impulse. 8 EARTH SCIENCE Planetary Science, Second Edition Investigation 1: Where Am I? Students develop a sense of planet Earth as a tiny base from which to launch an inquiry into the vast reaches of the solar system and beyond. Investigation 2: A Round, Spinning Earth Students become familiar with the celestial relationship of the Sun and Earth. Investigation 3: Seasons Students apply knowledge of the Earth s tilt and the revolution of Earth around the Sun to explain daylight length and seasons. Investigation 4: Moon Study Study the surface features of the Moon and the size and distance of our closest celestial neighbor. Investigation 5: Phases of the Moon Analyze Moon log data to identify the pattern of Moon phases, then develop a physical model that can explain Moon phases. Investigation 6: Craters Students conduct simple experiments on the magnitudes of lunar impact craters and use moon data to determine the number and frequency of major impacts on Earth. Investigation 7: Beyond the Moon Students learn the major classifications in which cosmic objects are distributed: solar system, galaxy, universe. Investigation 8: The Solar System Students explore the scale of the solar system by making physical and graphical models. 9 Investigation 9: Space Exploration This investigation Introduces a tool used to study distant objects in planetary systems, the spectroscope. Investigation 10: Orbits and New Worlds Students study and apply techniques used to search for planets and planetary systems around other stars in the Milky Way. Chapter 4, Lesson 1: Telescopes Chapter 4, Lesson 1: Telescopes Earth History, Second Edition Investigation 1: Earth Is Rock Students study the landforms and rocks that make up Earth s crust. Investigation 2: Weathering and Erosion Students discover that sediments are broken down pieces of rock and explore how water can erode sediments and deposit the sorted sediments downstream. Investigation 3: Deposition Students investigate the processes by which sediments turn into sedimentary rock. Investigation 4: Fossils and Past Environments Students consider the time scale in which rocks and fossils form using data from the Grand Canyon. Investigation 5: Igneous Rocks Students examine rock samples from a new location and investigate the relationship between crystal size and the formation of igneous rocks. Investigation 6: Volcanoes and Earthquakes This investigation introduces convection and the theory of plate tectonics to explain continental drift, plate boundary interactions, and the patterns of volcanoes and earthquakes. Students apply knowledge of the rock cycle and return to the Grand Canyon to answer the question What is the story of this place? Introduce the concept of weather and the tools that meteorologists use to measure and study weather factors. Investigation 2: Where's the Air? Weather occurs in the atmosphere and the atmosphere is composed of air, which has mass and can be compressed. Investigation 3: Air Pressure and Wind Investigate the relationship between changing air pressure and wind and explore a particle model for air pressure. Investigation 4: Convection Develop the concept of density on the way to understanding convection as a process of mass movement of fluids and a mechanism for energy transfer. Investigation 5: Heat Transfer Explore radiation as a mechanism for energy transfer, including seasonal variation of solar radiation. Investigation 2: Eyes: Inside and Out familiarizes students with the external and internal structures of the mammalian eye and lays the foundation for considering the function of the various components. Investigation 3: Lenses introduces students to the properties of lenses and challenges them to determine how these properties affect the function of their eyes. Investigation 4: Retina Students investigate the structure and function of the retina, the screen at the back of the eye where visual images form. Investigation 5: Into the Brain introduces students to the structure, orientation, and function of the brain, using the connection between the eyes and the brain as the entry point. Investigation 6: Perception moves students beyond the mechanics of vision to the role of the brain in creating meaning out of the sensory signals that it receives. Investigation 7: In Touch Students gain an understanding of the structures and functions of another sensory system, touch, and compare the touch system to the visual system.
