Laboratory Text: Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology, (5 th Edition) R. M. Busch (ed.) Prentice Hall, 276 p. Lectures: 9:30-10:45am, T, TH, Kell Hall, Laboratory: 300 Kell Hall, Th, Objectives: The primary objectives are to introduce the significant and important physical geologic processes occurring within and at the Earth s surface (volcanism, earthquakes, plate movements, rock cycle, mineral genesis, metamorphism), and to appreciate the role of plate tectonics as an encompassing concept to explain the formation of significant geologic features (e.g. mountains) and events (e.g. volcanoes, earthquakes). The students will also be introduced to the processes forming rocks and minerals in the Earth s crust, and the students will be active participants in the scientific method through the laboratory exercises. Students will develop skills in critical thinking (via test questions), posing questions (in class), elementary map reading and geologic interpretation (lab), a general understanding of the physical and chemical composition of Earth ranging from atomic to lithosphere plate and elementary understanding of the internal earth processes and tectonic processes, and an introductory level understanding of the origin of Earth. Rationale: Geology 1121 is the first course of a two-course sequence. It is intended to provide an overview of the important internal geologic processes on Earth. There are no prerequisites. The second course (Geology 1122) focuses on the evolution of Earth through geologic time as well as significant surface processes (weathering, groundwater). The recent interest in environmental topics (e.g. global warming) and the limited extent of our resources command us to be more knowledgeable about the geologic processes taking place on Earth. The information in this course should be of general interest to all students, and I hope the students will appreciate the importance of these physical geologic processes to our habitation on Earth and their time-deep nature. Above all, I hope this will be an enjoyable exploration of the planet Earth. Mechanism: We will follow the schedule on the following pages. Read the assigned chapters in Marshak, attend the lectures and lab, and, above all, be an active participant in this course. Slides of examples from the field will be shown during lectures to clarify concepts presented in the text. As a way to prepare for tests, the questions at the end of each chapter of Marshak should be read and answered; they will be a good review. Laboratory exercises are intended to have the students make observations and to draw conclusions based on these observations. Your lab instructor will present the laboratory procedure. Students must purchase the Yellow lab fee card unless this fee has been already assessed at registration. If there is a geologic topic of particular interest, and appropriate for this course, please let me know ASAP so that I can consider including it in this course. Academic regulations set forth in the current GSU General Catalog will be followed in this course. 2 Introductory Geosciences I: Geology 1121 (Honors) Earth s Internal Processes Fall Semester 2009 Grading: Your grade in this course will be based on the composite score calculated from the scores earned in two one-hour exams, the final exam, and the laboratory section as described in the following paragraph. If the composite score is less than 50, then the student will earn a failing grade. If the student earns a composite score greater than 50 and passes the lab, then the student will pass this course. The instructor will use his best judgment to determine the ranges of the passing Composite Scores corresponding to GSU letter grades of A, A-, B+ B, B-, C+, C, C-, and D+, D. Please also note that policies relating to academic honesty are in force this paper and for all work done is this course. Composite Score: A composite score is calculated based on the score of each exam (25% each exam), the laboratory (25%), Final Exam (25%). You must have a passing grade in the laboratory to pass this course. The questions asked in the exams will be objective in nature (multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, and short answer). Some number of questions of each test (N~ 5 or 10% of total questions) will require analysis of data and critical thinking to answer the question correctly. The final exam will be cumulative; one-half of the questions for the Final Exam will be drawn from the material presented since the second hour exam. DO NOT miss the scheduled one-hour exams, the final exam, and the laboratory exams. If the student does not provide a valid reason for missing any exam, then a score of zero will be entered for that exam. A make-up exam will be scheduled only if the student provides a valid excuse (a signed explanation from a physician or an emergency certified by the Dean of Students). In these cases, the student will contact the instructor within two days after the exam, and a make-up exam will be given within seven days after the date of the exam. The instructor reserves the right to change the format of the make-up exam from an objective test to an essay/short written answer format; the format will be discussed with the student when the student meets to schedule the make-up exam. If a student misses the Final Exam for a valid reason (e.g. medical condition certified by a written note from a physician or an emergency certified by the Dean of Students), then the student must contact the instructor ASAP to schedule a make-up examination. If the make-up exam is taken before submission of final grades, then I will do my best to grade this test before submission of the final grades. Otherwise, an incomplete grade will be entered, and it is the student s responsibility to rectify the incomplete grade within the permitted time period per University policy. Attendance Policy: It is the responsibility of each student to attend and to be prepared for classroom lectures and laboratory exercises. Studies have shown a good correlation between active participation including attendance with good grades. Attendance may be taken in lecture at the instructor s discretion. Attendance is required for lab and all exams. Repeated absences in lecture, exams, and/or lab will result in a reduction of the final grade, a failing grade, or administrative withdrawal from the course. ******************************************************************************

5 Department of Geosciences General Information to be included in all Departmental Class Syllabi Although specific policies and requirements will vary from class to class and from instructor to instructor, the following information applies in general to all courses in the Dept. of Geosciences.
