4 Practical Geomechanics Geomechanics, the science of evaluating the interplay between stresses, pressure and mechanical properties in rocks, plays a critical role in the optimization and efficient exploitation of a hydrocarbon reservoir. However, its role is usually recognized only when some specific challenge is experienced at wellbore or at field scale. The objectives of this course are to explain the principles which describe the interaction among man-made operations (drilling borehole, reservoir injection / depletion of reservoir etc.), rock properties and earth stresses. The course is planned to explain the proactive applications of this knowledge to explore and develop the reservoir in more efficient and informed manner. Who should attend? Anyone interested in understanding the basic principles and direct applications of Geomechanics that govern various drilling and production related issues (Wellbore Stability, Solids Production, Hydraulic Fracturing, Reservoir Geomechanics, Field development optimization etc.) in the process of reservoir development. Audience can be Geologists, Geophysicists, Petrophysicists, Rock Mechanics Specialists, Petroleum Engineers, Drilling / Well Engineers, Production Technologists and Reservoir Engineers. 6 The course is supported with field examples / case studies from Middle East region for better explanation and understanding of geomechanical concepts. Instructor Details: Mr. Satya Perumalla, Geomechanics Discipline Lead (Middle East region): Satya Perumalla is working in Oil & Gas Industry in Geomechanics, Geology & Drilling disciplines for last 18 years at different technical and managerial roles, supporting Sub-surface and Engineering interests of various E&P companies in Middle East, Africa and India. He worked with Schlumberger Geoservices, Shell and British Gas Group for 11 years and then joined Baker Hughes / GMI in Dubai since Satya worked and supervised various consulting projects linking geomechanics to wellbore stability, pore-pressure prediction, reservoir geomechanics and unconventional reservoirs. He has also built and lead the consulting & real-time geomechanics teams for Middle East region since He is an author of SPE technical papers and also a mentor/instructor for Geomechanics training. He received M.Sc (Applied Geology) degree from Indian Institute of Technology- Roorkee, India in 1994 and General Management Diploma from Indian Institute of Mangement- Ahmedabad, India in Mr.Perumalla is a member of AAPG, SPE, EAGE and SEG. 3
