A new Cylindera (subgenus Leptinomera) from Sabah, Malaysia, with records of other species (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae). Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 149: , figs [issn ]. Published 1 December A new species, Cylindera (Leptinomera) duffelsiana sp. n., is described from the Tawau river in southeastern Sabah, Malaysia, and some new distributional records of other species from Sabah are given. The subgenus Leptinomera now includes 20 species, of which 13 occur in northern Borneo. A checklist is provided. Dr. Fabio Cassola, Via F. Tomassucci 12/20, I Roma, Italy. fabiocassola@alice.it Key words: Cicindelidae; Sabah, Malaysia; Cylindera (Leptinomera); new species; new records. After my own revision of the small Cylindera tiger beetle species of the subgenus Leptinomera Rivalier, 1961 (Cassola 1983) and a few subsequent publications (Wiesner 1989, 1996, 1998, Naviaux 1991, Cassola 1995, Cassola & Probst 1995, Matalin & Cassola 2000), one further new species has now been found, thus expanding the number of species so far known to belong to this basically Sundaic subgenus to 20. The distribution of the subgenus ranges from Java, Borneo, and Sumatra northwards to Malacca, Thailand and Myanmar (Burma). The highest number of species, however, is known from northern Borneo (13 species). A checklist is provided below. The scanty available information indicates that these small, seldom collected, forest-dwelling tiger beetles are to be found along streams and streamlets (like the species of the Oriental genus Therates and those of the Wallacean genera Thopeutica and Wallacedela), where they sit on wet mossy rocks in the channels or on the overhanging vegetation (Bouchard 1901, Bryant 1919, Moulton 1914, Cassola 1983). Occasionally, they have been collected at light or in Malaise traps (Wiesner 1989). The specimens studied are currently held in the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (zman) and in the author s collection (fcc). This is probably the most common species of the genus, known from Sumatra (where it was first described) and Malacca. Records from Borneo (Horn 1931; Cassola 1983) need confirmation, as misidentification of specimens is a possibility. C. (L.) catoptroides is bronze greenish in colour, with four evenly-sized elytral dots, metallic legs, and a short half-testaceous labrum. Cylindera (Leptinomera) plasoni (W. Horn) Cicindela plasoni W. This species, apparently endemic in Sabah, was for a long time only known from two female specimens from the Mt. Kinabalu area (Cassola 1983). Wiesner (1989) recorded some additional specimens and described the male. Like C. (L.) catoptroides, it is dark bronze in colour, with four similarly-sized elytral dots (rarely just two), metallic legs, and a short half-testaceous labrum, but the females have smooth and shiny shoulders and a large round elytral mirror (males, in contrast, have matt shoulders). Moreover, the sides of pronotum are slightly pubescent. 0,5 mm Fig. 2. Kinabalu in Sabah, but also from a locality in Sarawak (Cassola 1995), is slightly larger in size than the preceding species, silky emerald-green in colour, with a halftestaceous labrum, a small submarginal middle dot and a remarkably larger, distinctly comma-shaped, subapical spot. Numerous additional specimens have recently been collected in the same area. 205

I have first described this pretty species from the Gunung Mulu NP area in Sarawak (Cassola 1983), but several additional specimens were subsequently found in Sabah (Wiesner 1989; Cassola 1995) and in Brunei [Temburong, Belalong Field Research Centre, 100 m, 2-8.v.95 (mixed dipterocarp forest), Heiss leg, 1, 3 (fcc)]. C. (L.) kibbyana is remarkable because of its striking sexual colour dimorphism (males being olive-green, females blue green to blue violet) and moreover because it has, unlike most other species, a fully metallic labrum. Cylindera (Leptinomera) duffelsiana sp. n. (figs. 1-2) Type material. Holotype, (zman), 2 paratypes (zman, fcc). sabah: Tawau Hill, 300m, along Sungay Tawau, nr trail to Air Panas, 27.iii.2001, at light (river bed in primary riverine forest), J.P. & M.J. Duffels. Diagnosis. A small Leptinomera species, closely related to C. (L.) kibbyana Cassola, 1983 but easily distinguished by the bronze-green body colour (rather than blue to blue-violet), the shorter elytra, the relatively large, round elytral mirror, and the occurrence of a smaller middle dot in addition to the larger subapical one. Labrum short, transverse, with 6-8 setae, glossy black. Antennae long, projecting well over the middle of the elytral length. Pronotum blackish-green, glabrous, same length as width, distinctly rounded at sides. Legs metallic black with some greenish reflections. Male unknown. Description. Head mostly black, with green reflections on clypeus, antennal plates, orbital declivities, and genae; glabrous, only two setigerous punctures near the edge of each eye. Surface almost smooth, very finely striated on frons and vertex, with a few stronger longitudinal striae on the orbital declivities and genae. Eyes relatively small, slightly protruding and not greatly raised above the vertex. Labrum very short, transverse, glossy black, with 6-8 submarginal setae near forward edge. Mandibles pitch-black, slightly rufous on apical and inner teeth. Labial and maxillary palpi slender, elongate, testaceous, with the last joint dark metallic; second joint of maxillary palpi with a slight metallic sheen dorsally. Antennae slender, relatively long, projected well over the half of the elytral length; scape and second joint glossy black with some slight greenish reflections, a single seta on tip of scape; articles 3 and 4 slightly tinged with violet on their extremities, with 2-3 short, fine, spiniform setae only near base and tip; antennomeres 5-11 dull black with some metallic lustre, very finely and evenly pubescent. Pronotum glabrous, as long as wide, distinctly rounded at sides, blackish-green; surface almost smooth, just finely and unevenly wrinkled transversally; proepisterna black, glabrous in the middle, with long white semi-erect setae in the front half and near the hind sulcus. Mesepisterna almost glabrous except for a few white setae near the coxae; mesepisternal coupling sulcus a marked pit in lower part, near the mesepimeral rim. Mesepimera, metepisterna and sides of sternum evenly covered with white recumbent pubescence. Elytra relatively short, wide, somewhat enlarged at the rear, bronze-green with a somewhat velvety appearance, the shoulders and a large roundish elytral mirror distinctly glossy on the elytral ground; apical margin narrowly shining black. Elytral markings consisting of two small roundish dots on each elytron, the front one very small, positioned at about the middle, approximately at a third of the elytral width, the posterior one much larger, situated near the subapical angle, close to but not touching the elytral border; humeral dot absent in female. Apical margin rounded, not serrulate, sutural teeth small but distinct, slightly overlapping with each other. Epipleura dark with a metallic sheen. Abdominal sternites dull black, with bluish-green metallic reflections, slightly shagreened on disc, evenly covered with fine white recumbent hairs on the sides. Legs metallic black with some slight bluish-green reflections. Coxae metallic bluish-black, the hind ones with white recumbent hairs on their lateral edges; trochanters rufous-testaceous. Male unknown. It is expected to be a bit smaller, with a bit longer antennae. Length: mm (without labrum). Etymology. The new species is cordially dedicated to its collector, Dr. J.P. Duffels (Institute for Systematics & Population Biology, Zoological Museum, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands), whom I had the pleasure of meeting during the 20th I.C.E. (Florence 1996). Another tiger beetle species, Wallacedela duffelsi Cassola, 1991, which he had collected in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, had been dedicated to him some years ago (Cassola 1991). Remarks. On account of its fully metallic labrum 206
5 Cassola: new Cylindera from Sabah and the shape of its head, the new species is obviously a close relative of the co-occurring C. (L.) kibbyana Cassola, 1983, which, however, is blue to blueviolet in the females (rather than green), and moreover has slightly longer elytra, a smaller unobtrusive elytral mirror, and just one single elytral dot (the subapical one). On the other hand C. (L.) catoptroides (W. Horn, 1892) differs from duffelsiana in its darker body colour, its non-glossy shoulders, the approximately evenly-sized elytral spots, and the halftestaceous labrum. From C. (L.) plasoni (W. Horn, 1903), the new species differs in its greenish glossy (rather than dull dark bronze) elytra, the smaller middle elytral dots, the green rather than goldencupric elytral mirror, the glabrous and more laterally rounded pronotum and, again, because of the fully metallic (instead of half-testaceous) labrum. Couplet 4 in my 1983 key can be modified accordingly as follows: 4. Labrum at least partly testaceous... 6 Labrum metallic, blue-green to violet-black a 4a. Inner teeth of mandibles normally shaped... 4b Inner teeth of mandibles flattened, halberdshaped... C. macrodonta 4b. Larger ( mm), sexually dimorphic (male olive-green, female more or less blue-violet); elytral markings reduced to a subapical roundish dot only; female elytral mirror blue, usually poorly evident... C. kibbyana Smaller ( mm); female bronze green, with glossy shoulders and elytral mirror; a tiny middle dot on elytra, in addition to the larger subapical one... C. duffelsiana Acknowledgements Thanks are to be given to Mr. Ben Brugge (Entomology Section, Zoological Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands), who submitted this interesting consignment of specimens for identification, and to Prof. Claudio Vita-Finzi (London, U.K.), who kindly revised the English text.
