Grade Six Macmillan McGraw-Hill: California Earth Science Science/ Treasures Correlations *This document was created for the purpose of helping teachers align the science and social studies programs with California Treasures. These are only suggestions; feel free to use your professional judgment. Treasures Unit and Week Science Standards (ES, PS, LS) Student Book (SB) Teacher s Edition (TE) Science Unit and Chapter (+ covered in both ELA and Science text) Wonders (CCR) UNIT 1- OUR STORIES Unit 1 Week 4 PS 6.3b PS 6.3c Students know that when fuel is consumed, most of the energy released becomes heat energy. Students know heat flows in solids by conduction (which involves no flow of matter) and in fluids by conduction and by convection (which involves flow of matter). Students know heat energy is also transferred between objects by radiation (radiation can travel through space). TE pgs. 84, 87B CCR Full of Energy + TFK pgs Chapter 3- Heat Energy PS 6.3a-c++ + ES 6.4a-d

UNIT 3- A QUESTION OF VALUES Unit 3 Week 1 ES 6.2 PS 6.4e Topography is reshaped by the weathering rock and soil and by the transportation of deposition of sediment. Students know differences in pressure, heat, air movement, and humidity result in changes of weather. SB In The Days of the Vaqueros pgs TE pgs. 265B, 269 CCR The Sun s Energy Affects the Weather +TFK pgs (may want to find time to teach chapters 5 and 7 of Unit 3 as well to preteach for Unit 5 of Treasures) Unit 3 ES 6.2c Students know beaches are dynamic systems in which the sand is supplied by rivers and moved along the coast by the action of waves. TE pg. 357B CCR How Sand Builds Beaches +TFK pgs UNIT 4- ACHIEVING DREAMS Unit 4 Week 1 LS 6.5a Students know energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis and then from organism to organism through food webs. TE pgs. 386, 389B CCR Producers, Consumers, Decomposers + TFK pgs ES 6.1a-g+ Unit 1 Earth s Ecology Chapter 1- Earth s Ecosystems LS 6.5a+ LS 6.5b LS 6.5e

Unit 4 Week 2 LS 6.5b LS 6.5c Students know matter is transferred over time from one organism to others in the food web and between organisms and the physical environment. Students know populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem. TE pg. 415B CCR Food Chains and Food Webs + TFK pgs Unit 1 Earth s Ecology Chapter 1- Earth s Ecosystems LS 6.5a LS 6.5b+ LS 6.5e (Standard LS 6.5c is not directly sited in the Science text, you may need to supplement on your own.) Unit 4 Week 3 Unit 4 PS 6.4c PS 6.4d PS 6.4a PS 6.4b Students know heat from Earth s interior reaches the surface primarily through convection. Students know convection currents distribute heat in the atmosphere and oceans. Students know the sun is the major source of energy for phenomena on Earth s surface; it powers winds, ocean currents, and the water cycle. Students know solar energy reaches Earth through radiation, mostly in the form of visible light. TE pg. 427B CCR Convection Currents Warm the Planet + TFK pgs TE pg. 477B ES 6.4a-d++ ES 6.4a-d++ CCR The Earth Runs on Solar Power + TFK pgs UNIT 5- OUR INCREDIBLE EARTH Unit 5 Week 1 ES 6.1d ES 6.2d Students know that earthquakes are sudden motions along breaks in the crust called faults and that volcanoes and fissures are locations where magma reaches the surface. Students know earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and floods change human and wildlife habitats. SB Volcanoes pgs TE pgs. 508, 511B CCR Volcanoes and Earthquakes + TFK pgs

Unit 5 Week 2 Unit 5 Week 3 ES 6.1d ES 6.2d ES 6.1d ES 6.2d ES 6.2a Students know that earthquakes are sudden motions along breaks in the crust called faults and that volcanoes and fissures are locations where magma reaches the surface. Students know earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and floods change human and wildlife habitats. Students know that earthquakes are sudden motions along breaks in the crust called faults and that volcanoes and fissures are locations where magma reaches the surface. Students know earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and floods change human and wildlife habitats. Students know water running downhill is the dominant process in shaping the landscape, including California s landscape. SB The Dog of Pompeii pgs TE pgs.530, 537B, 539 CCR Natural Disasters Affect Habitats + TFK pgs SB The Big One pgs (review of ES standards from unit 5 wk 2) TE pg. 549B CCR Shaping California s Landscape + TFK pgs (repeat of standards from Unit 5 Week 1) ++ (repeat of standards from Unit 5 Week 1 & 2 with the addition of ES 6.2a & b) ES 6.2b Students know rivers and streams are dynamic systems that erode, transport sediment, change course, and flood their banks in natural and recurring patterns. Unit 5 Week 4 PS 6.4d ES 6.1f ES 6.1g Students know convection currents distribute heat in the atmosphere and oceans. Students know how to explain major features of California geology (including mountains, faults, volcanoes) in terms of plate tectonics. Students know how to determine the epicenter of an earthquake and know that the effects of an earthquake on any region vary, depending on the size of the earthquake, the distance of the region from the epicenter, the local geology, and the type of construction in the region. SB Icebergs and Glaciers pgs TE pgs. 569, 573B CCR How Earth s Forces Shape California + TFK pgs ES 6.4a-d+

Unit 5 ES 6.1a ES 6.1b ES 6.1c Students know evidence of plate tectonics is derived from the fit of the continents; the location of earthquakes, volcanoes, and midocean ridges; and the distribution of fossils, rock types, and ancient climatic zones. Students know Earth is composed of several layers: a cold, brittle lithosphere; a hot, convecting mantle; and a dense, metallic core. Students know lithospheric plates the size of continents and oceans move at rates of centimeters per year in response to movements in the mantle. TE pgs. 597B, 600 CCR The Forces That Shape Earth + TFK pgs (Standard LS 6.5c is not directly sited in the Science text, you may need to supplement on your own.) LS 6.5c Students know populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem. UNIT 6- RESCUE Unit 6 Week 2 Unit 6 Week 3 LS 6.5d LS 6.5e LS 6.6a Students know different kinds of organisms may play similar ecological roles in similar biomes. Students know the number and types of organisms an ecosystem can support depends on the resources available and on abiotic factors, such as quantities of light and water, a range of temperatures, and soil composition. Students know the utility of energy sources is determined by factors that are involved in converting these sources to useful forms and the consequences of the conversion process. SB Interrupted Journey pgs TE pgs. 655, 661B CCR Biotic and Abiotic Factors + TFK pgs Unit 1 Earth s Ecology Chapter 2- Earth s Land and Water LS 6.5d+ LS 6.5e+ Chapter 7- Earth s Resources ES 6.6a-c+++ LS 6.6b LS 6.6c Students know different natural energy and material resources, including air, soil, rocks, minerals, petroleum, fresh water, wildlife, and forests, and know how to classify them as renewable or nonrenewable. Students know the natural origin of the materials used to make common objects. TE pg. 673B CCR Energy Conversions and Natural Resources + TFK pgs

Unit 6 PS 6.3a PS 6.3b Students know energy can be carried from one place to another by heat flow or by waves, including water, light and sound waves, or by moving objects. Students know that when fuel is consumed, most of the energy released becomes heat energy. SB The Great Fire pgs TE pgs. 713, 723B CCR Heating Things Up + TFK pgs Chapter 3- Heat Energy PS 6.3a-c++ TFK (Time for Kids) SUGGESTIONS: Most Science Units fit well within Treasures Units, the way it s already laid out. * Unit 2, chapters 3 & 4 fit well in Unit 1 of Treasures. * Unit 3, chapter 6 fits well in Unit 3 of Treasures. The addition of chapters 5 and 7 would give students adequate introduction before the unit is heavily taught in Unit 5 of Treasures. * Unit 1, chapters 1 & 2 fit well in Unit 4 of Treasures. Any Science Units not adequately covered during the year can be reviewed during the final Unit 6 of Treasures.
