1 Grade 7 Science Curriculum Map - Norwell Middle School SUBJECT: Science Grade Level: 7 Unit: Physical Science (Chemistry) ~ 10 Weeks Ending Near Thanksgiving Science Standard 2: Differentiate between volume and mass. Define density. Define matter Define mass as the amount of matter in an object. Define volume as the amount of space an object takes up. Define density as the amount of mass in a given volume. Calculate the density of an object when given the mass and the volume. Use correct labels when calculating density.(g/ml for liquids, g/cm 3 solids) Recognize that 1mL is equal to 1 cm 3 Find the density of a given object. Know the density of water as 1.0 g/ml Predict if objects with a certain density will float or sink in water. Predict the locations of liquids in a cylinder depending on the density of those liquids. Recognize that the density of an substance is independent of the amount of the substance. How can matter be measured? How can measurements of matter be used to determine how it behaves in water? Standard 3: Recognize that the measurement of volume and mass requires understanding of the sensitivity of measurement tools (e.g. rulers, graduated cylinders, balances) and knowledge and appropriate use of significant digits. Define significant digits. Define mass. Define volume. Measure the mass of an object on a triple beam balance. Record the answer in significant digits. Calculate the volume of a cubic object using a cm ruler Find the volume of an irregularly shaped object using water displacement. Use significant digits in all answers regarding mass and volume. Model or describe the movement of a particle in Bose, Einstein solid, liquid and gas and plasma. Predict the change in movement of a particle when heat is added or removed. Recreate a diagram of changes in state including sublimation. Define physical change as a change in a substance that does not change its identity. Define chemical change as a change in which one ore more substances combine or break apart to form a new substance. Identify the clues that a physical or chemical change have occurred. Perform and give examples physical changes. Give examples of chemical changes. Define matter as anything that has mass an takes up space. Compare and contrast physical and chemical properties. Define element, compound, mixture, heterogeneous mixture, homogeneous mixture. Categorize various objects as a(n) element, compound, heterogeneous mixture, homogeneous mixture. Predict the steps to separate a mixture using the physical properties of the objects and perform the separation. Recognize that a homogeneous mixture is also known as a solution. Define element, atom, compound, and molecule. Read and decipher a chemical formula. Recognize the first 30 and other common elements including the symbol. Recognize common compounds such as water, carbon dioxide, sand, chalk, table salt, sugar, ammonia. Compare and contrast elements and compounds. Define melting point as the temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid. Define boiling point as the temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas. Define freezing point as the temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid. Define condensation and evaporation. Recognize that melting points and freezing point for a substance is the same temperature. See Earth Science Standard (3) How can matter change or be changed? 3 Grade 7 Science Curriculum Map - Norwell Middle School Standard 2: Describe the layers of the solid earth, including the lithosphere, the hot convecting mantle, and the dense metallic core. Standard 3: Differentiate among radiation, conduction, and convection, the three mechanisms by which heat is transferred through the earth s system. Standard 5: Describe how the movement of the earth s crustal plates causes both slow changes in the earth s surface (e.g formation of mountains and ocean basins) and rapid ones (e.g. volcanic eruptions and earthquakes) Define crust, lithosphere, asthenosphere, lower mantle, outer core inner core. Locate on a diagram the crust, lithosphere, asthenosphere, lower mantle, outer core, inner core. Describe the materials that make up each layer and if that material is in a solid or a liquid state. Recognize that there are two types of crust, oceanic and continental, and the make up and relative densities of each. Explain what happens to temperature, pressure, and density as one travels deeper into the Earth. Describe what convection currents in the mantle are and what they cause. Compare and contrast the inner and outer core. Realize that the spinning of the inner and outer core create the EM field. Predict what would happen to the Earth if the inner and outer core stopped spinning. Define heat transfer and know there are 3 types of heat transfer. Define radiation, conduction, and convection. Give examples of each type of heat transfer. Explain the role temperature and density play in convection currents. Predict what would happen to a convection current if the fluid was to become the same temperature. Predict what would happen on Earth s surface of convection currents in the asthenosphere stopped. Compare a lava lamp to the asthenosphere. Recognize that a convection current can happen in any fluid (gas or liquid). Define plate tectonics. Plot major Earthquakes and volcanoes, recent and past, and explain the reason for the location of these earthquakes and volcanoes. Predict possible locations of future earthquakes and volcanoes. Define the 3 types of boundaries (convergent, divergent, transform) Describe the landforms that are formed at each type of boundary. Predict which landform would be created if given a certain type of boundary. Give real world examples of each type of boundary and coinciding landform. Realize that the density of the plates colliding affect the landform that will be created. Identify which boundaries tend to have slowly visible effects and which boundaries tend to have quickly visible effects. Compare and contrast P wave and S waves. Describe how these waves help scientists learn about Earth s interior. Explain and draw the process of sea floor spreading. Identify probable locations of young and old rocks around the planet. What causes layers within the Earth? How is heat transferred? What processes, present, past and future have and will change Earth?

4 Grade 7 Science Curriculum Map - Norwell Middle School Unit: Life Science (Human Body/System of Living Things) ~ 7 weeks ending near April vacation Standard 5: Describe the hierarchical organization of multicultural organisms from cells to tissues, to organ systems to organism. Define and label the main parts of a cell. Define a cell as the basic unit of a living organism. Give examples of types of cells in the human body such as cheek cells, muscle cells, nerve cells, and bone cells. Explain that the various cells of the body have various structures to perform the various functions i.e. muscle cells can contract, nerve cells can send signals. Define a tissue as a group of cells working together to perform a similar function. Give examples of tissues in the human body: epithelial tissue, muscle tissue, nerve tissue, and bone tissue. Draw 4 different types of human body tissue and identify the parts of the cell if visible. According to proper scientific drawing guidelines. Recognize that if the cells of a tissue perform function it allows the tissue to perform the same function. Define the 3 types of muscle tissue and give an example of where each type can be found. Define an organ as a group of tissues working together to perform a specific function. Explain the function of the different blood cells in an organism. Identify major organs and functions of those organs in the human body: heart kidney, lung, stomach, brain, skin, liver, intestines. Define an organ system as a group of organs working together to perform a similar function. Identify by sight and know the function of the 8 major organ systems (reproductive done in health class) How does a collection of cells create an organism?

5 Standard 6: Identify the general functions of the main systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, protection from disease, and movement, control and coordination) and describe ways that these systems interact with each other. Grade 7 Science Curriculum Map - Norwell Middle School Identify by sight and know the function of the 8 major organ systems (reproductive done in health class) Describe the process by which food is digested through body, including the organs involved, the path the food takes, and what occurs in each part of the digestive system. Explain the process of respiration, including the main parts and path of the cardiovascular system including the blood vessels. Name and place the major bones of the body. Describe the 5 main functions of the skeletal system as protection of organs, production of blood, shape and supports, allows movement, stores minerals. Identify the 4 main types of joints in the body and locate an example on the body. Predict the issues that would arise if any system of the body stopped working. Explain how the body protects itself from disease including barriers like skin, and inflammatory responses like fever. Explain the function of the excretory system in and describe how waste is removed from the blood and body in that system Explain how the following organ systems work together. Respiratory/Circulatory, Muscular/Nervous/Skeletal, Skeletal/Circulatory Define homeostasis. Explain how the organ systems work together to allow for homeostasis of temperature with in the body. How do the systems of the human body work together to maintain homeostasis? Unit: Physical Science (Motion and Forces) ~ 7 weeks- Until end of year

Standard 12: Graph and interpret distance vs. time graphs for constant speed. Standard 13: Differentiate between potential and kinetic energy. Define velocity. Calculate speed and determine velocity in real life situations. Compare and contrast speed and velocity. Create a distance vs time graphs for real life situations. Calculate the speed of an object using only a distance vs time graph. Analyze a distance vs. time graph for an object that has a changing speed. Determine the meaning of a flat line in a distance vs time graph. Determine what the slope of a line in a distance vs.time graph can reveal about the speed of an object. Define energy. Define potential and kinetic energy. Give examples of potential and kinetic energy. Calculate potential energy in real life situations. Calculate kinetic energy in real life situations. Analyze the factors that can cause kinetic energy and potential energy to change. Identify kinetic energy changing into potential energy in an amusement park. Identify potential energy changing into kinetic energy in an amusement park. What is the relationship between motion, speed, velocity and acceleration?
