1 HPISD Science Grade 5 Curriculum Unit Name Unit 4: Earth and Space Science Unit Overview Students will identify and discover the formation of fossil fuels as well as alternative energy resources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biofuels. Students will identify Earth's renewable resources such as air, plants, water, and animals. Students will discover that landforms are the result of weathering, erosion, and deposition. They explore the formation of sedimentary rocks and identify fossils as evidence of past living organisms. Involve student investigations of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas), alternative energy sources such as geothermal, hydropower, wind energy, nuclear energy and nanotechnology. Students will also classify these sources as renewable, nonrenewable, and inexhaustible. Students will explore weather and climate including maps, symbols, map keys, and be able to differentiate between the two. Students will explore the Earth, Moon, Sun system. They will compare, describe the orbits of, and predict observable patterns such as seasons, moon phases, and tides. Generalizations/Enduring Understandings Concepts Cycles, Systems, Similarities and Differences, Cause and Effect, Change Growth, Environment, History Force causes change Guiding/Essential Questions What led to the formation of sedimentary rock layers and fossil fuels? Identify alternative energy resources. What processes are responsible for the formation of landforms and what evidence can we infer from the discovery of fossils? What is solar energy and how is it beneficial? Energy, Cause & Effect, Predicting, Natural Resources, Conservation, Inquiry What is the difference between weather and climate? How do the characteristics of the Earth, moon, and Sun compare? What is the relationship of positions and orbits of the Earth, Moon, and Sun? What causes day and night on the Earth and the movement of the Sun across the sky?

2 Performance Levels Learning Progression (***Decision Points) Learning Targets Identify forces and their effects on the shape of the Earth. Differentiate and identify Earth's natural resources as fossil fuels and/or alternative energy sources Recognize and identify patterns in the natural world and among the sun, earth and moon have an understanding of how sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels form. distinguish between alternative energy resources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biofuels. recognize how landforms are created such as deltas, canyons, and sand dunes. describe changes to earth s surface as a result of wind, water, and ice. investigate changes in earth s surface resulting from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides. differentiate between weather and climate. explain how the sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle. identify and compare physical characteristics of the sun, earth, and moon. predict changes in shadows, tides, seasons, and the appearance of the moon over time. identify the planets in our solar system and their position related to the sun. measure and record changes in earth s weather while making predictions using weather maps, weather symbols, and a map key. demonstrate that earth rotates on its axis.
