The Ketzin Test Site (former CO 2 Sink-project) - Experiences and results gained during 32 months of operation - Axel Liebscher & Ketzin Team
The Ketzin Test Site ~ 25 km west of Berlin located in the North German Basin only active national storage project
The Ketzin Test Site SE flank of Roskow-Ketzin double anticline reservoir: saline aquifer fluviatile arcosic sandstones Upper Triassic Stuttgart Formation porosity ~ 26% permeability ~ 100 md (variable) depth: m Roskow-Ketzin double anticline cap-rock: shales Upper Triassic Weser Formation porosity ~ 8 % permeability ~ µd
The Ketzin Test Site comparably low pressure and density
The Ketzin Test Site top anticline observation well Ktzi 202 injection well Ktzi 201 injection pipeline observation well Ktzi 200 injection facility 1 injection and 2 observation wells at distances of 50 and 112 m
The Ketzin Test Site start of injection: June 30 th, 2008 CO 2 quality: 99,9 % food-grade 2 CO 2 -tanks each with 50 t CO 2 (liquid, - 18 o C/19 bar) injection conditions ~ 35 o C/62 bar 1 electrical heater, 300 kw, ambient air-heater injection rates: 24 to 77 t/day CO 2 arrival at Ktzi 200: July 15 th, 2008 after 530 t CO 2 (as expected) CO 2 arrival at Ktzi 202: March 22 nd, 2009 after 11,200 t CO 2 (notably late based on pre-injection models)
Injection operation actual mass of injected CO 2 : ~ 45,000 t (permitted maximum: 100,000 t) injection runs safe and stable
Monitoring - overview active seismic methods surface-surface: 3-D, 2-D star surface-downhole: VSP/MSP cross-hole geoelectric methods surface-downhole cross-hole different methods with different spatial resolution also: passive seismic, surface monitoring, fluid sampling, logging, DTS
Geophysical monitoring geoelectric 1. Repeat 07/2008, 600 t 2. Repeat 11/2008, 4,500 t 3. Repeat 04/2009, 13,700 t 4. Repeat 03/2011, ~ 45,000 t seismic 1. Repeat 3D, 2D, VSP 10/2009, ~ 22,000 t 2. Repeat 2D, VSP 02/2011, ~ 43,000 t
3D time-lapse seismic monitoring Top Stuttgart Form. CO 2 Signatur prominent anhydrite layer time-lapse amplitude analysis shows clear CO 2 signature around injector
resistivity ratio Geoelectric monitoring surface-downhole measurements change of resistivity (repeat/baseline) with time at 635 m depth 2 nd repeat November 2008; 4,500 t CO 2 3 rd repeat April 2009; 13,700 t CO 2 Ktzi 202 Ktzi Ktzi 201 Ktzi 200 Ktzi 201 Ktzi m 100 m (after Kießling & Rücker, 2010)
Geoelectric monitoring surface-downhole measurements change of resistivity (repeat/baseline > 3) with time and depth November 2008; 4,500 t CO 2 April 2009; 13,700 t CO 2 (after Kießling & Rücker, 2010) first inversion results improved analysis may change picture a little
Comparing geoelectric and seismic results Geoelectric April 2009; 13,700 t CO 2 injected Seismic Autumn 2009; ~ 24,000 CO 2 injected Ktzi 202 Ktzi 202 WNW WNW Ktzi 201 Ktzi 200 Ktzi 201 Ktzi m 100 m results for both methods are consistent data suggest preferred WNW extension of CO 2 plume
Comparing seismic and modelling 3D repeat 3D repeat and modeling undetected volume? Eclipse model seismic and model do not match improved geological model neede: work in progress
Future tasks and projects - continue injection (presumably until 2012/2013) - move to impure CO 2 - continue monitoring (e.g., 2 nd 3D repeat) - install and perform additional monitoring techniques (InSAR, CSMT) - drill shallow (~ 450 m) observation well in first aquifer above cap-rock (planned for summer 2011) - drill fourth deep (~ 700 m) well for monitoring and core recovery (planned for summer/autumn 2012) - after end of injection study smart abandonment techniques and materials
P-T-r conditions in observation well Ktzi 200 notably lower wellhead pressure in Ktzi 200 compared to Ktzi 201 stable conditions in Ktzi 200 since breakthrough of CO 2
P-T-r conditions in observation well Ktzi 200 pressure gradient gives effective density at each depth temperature allows calculate CO 2 phase diagram with depth
