Know how to use longitude and latitude, prime meridian and equator using grid lines. 15 hrs Science7.2 Rocks and Minerals A. Can describe the 3 subatomic particles and their interactions. B. Understand basics of atomic bonding. C. Understand that some molecules form geometric shapes that create mineral crystals. D. List five characteristics of minerals. E. Describe the process that results in mineral formation. F. Explain how rocks and minerals are classified. List major groups of minerals. G. Understand the rock cycle and the processes that occur to form new rock. (SD1.1) H. Use scientific processes and inquiry to directly support concepts on Ch hrs Science7.3 Erosion and Deposition rocks and minerals. (SA1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.1, SG) A. Describe the formation and composition of soils. (SD 2.1) B. Understand that wind, water (in different states) and gravity change the surface of the earth. (SD1.2, SD2.3) C. Understand the relationships between earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. (SD2.2, SD2.3) D. Understand dormancy, magma, and lava. E. Can compare and contrast shield, cinder cone and composite volcanoes. F. Understand what faults are and why most earthquakes occur there. (SD2.2) G. Understand the instruments that measure earthquakes. (SE) H. Explain the P wave, S wave and surface waves. I. Know how emergency planning and retrofitting of buildings assist cities to survive an earthquake. (SF) J. Understand the causes of tsunamis. K. Use scientific processes and inquiry to directly support concepts on volcanoes and earthquakes. (SA1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.1, SG) Ch 9

Understand cycles influenced by energy from the sun and by Earth's position and motion in our solar system: including daylight Ch19-22 cycles, moon phases and eclipses, tidal action, relationship between seasons and Earth's tilt relative to the sun. (SD3.1) B. Understands theories regarding the origin and evolution of the universe/solar system. C. Create model of the solar system illustrating planetary location/position, size, composition, moons/rings and conditions. (SD4.1) D. Compare the brightness of a star to its distance and size using light years. (SD4.2) E. Familiar with significant deep space objects and their origins. F. Compare and contrast the characteristics of planets and stars (light reflecting, light emitting, orbiting, orbited, composition). (SD4.1) G. Uses a telescope to directly support concepts in astronomy. (SE) 10 hrs Science7.7 Atmosphere A. Understands composition and structure of the atmosphere (gases present and layers). B. Understands that atmosphere reduces temperature extremes between day and night (diurnal effect). C. Knows that atmosphere is warmed through heat retention (greenhouse effect). (SD3.2) D. Understand that the atmosphere protects life on earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation. E. Knows that gases are retained by Earth's gravity. Ch 12
4 15 hrs Science7.8 Meteorology A. Describe the weather using accepted meteorological terms: pressure systems, fronts, and precipitation. (SD3.1) Ch B. Recognize types of energy transfer (convection, conduction and radiation) and how they affect weather. (SD3.2) C. Able to use weather instruments in order to predict weather. (SE) D. Understand the difference between weather and climate. E. Use scientific processes and inquiry to directly support concepts on meteorology. (SA1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.1 SG) 15 hrs Science7.9 Water Cycle and Oceans A. Recognizes phase changes (sublimation, condensation, evaporation) and energy transfer. (SD3.2) B. Apply knowledge of the water cycle to explain changes on the earth's surface. (SD1.2) C. Identify the oceans of the world. D. Knows the layers of the ocean. E. Aware of the significance of coral reefs and the dependence of ocean animals on them. F. Explain the salinity and temperature of the oceans and their effect on animals/plants. G. Understands how currents and waves have distinct characteristics and impacts. (SD1.2) H. Use scientific processes and inquiry to directly support concepts on oceans. Ch hrs Science7.10 Natural Resources (SA1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.1, SG) A. Compare and contrast renewable and non-renewable resources. B. List viable forms of useable energy and energy production. C. Compare and contrast risks and benefits involved in a variety of types of energy production.
